Hey all...

I've got a couple of tunes, with the titles of the tracks listed, but no
artists. Don't have the name of the collection they're from, either, but
it's, as I understand it, a collection of French psychedelic party tunes...
I dunno, psych/lounge or something? Do these song titles ring a bell with
anyone? Know the artists and the name of the comp?

The tunes are "LSD Party" and "Super Erotica." (These are a few of my
fav-o-rite things)...

Oh yeah... could someone post the tracklist to the Sons of Yma comp?
(or... are there more than one? The one I'm looking for has covers of ?'s
"I Need Somebody" (however that translates) and Zep's "Moby Dick"(!)).

Thanks,

Lenny

Heard the record on BBC London Live yesterday. Where are they playing, Phil?

And if you're in London on 6th March, make sure to put a note in your diary
regarding Finland's The FLAMING SIDEBURNS who are supporting some heavy
metal group called The Hellacopters at the Underworld in Camden.

And of course, don't forget The BUFF MEDWAYS on 9th March!

And, of course, before that The MASONICS - Mickey Hampshire, Bruce Brand

Fortune Teller has always puzzled me somewhat. It's not very typical New
Orleans R&B at all (oops, I said it again) as
a far as the tune goes. It sounds almost it was made so that the beat
groups can get a great number in their repertoire.
This doesn't make any sense I know. You're no Good is another one. The
chords and the mood and everything just
begs for a beatgroup treatment

Actually Greg, you are correct. :-) Eleven of the 1967 Andrew Oldham
tracks were released on Del's 1978 album "And The Music Plays On". The
same tracks were included on the 1991 CD "The Liberty Years" (EMI) and the
1995 two-fer "Live In England/And The Music Plays On" (BGO). I have no
idea if any other tracks from those sessions have ever surfaced.

I just wanted to let you know our sad news. We have lost Vince Montgomery,
bass guitarist and singer, of The Gants. He died in his sleep of natural
causes at home, the night before last.

We are all totally devastated. There will be a burial service in Vince's
hometown this Saturday and a memorial service in Greenwood, MS sometime this
week. He had been in poor health recently. Vince was 54.

Oh, man.......................just rolled out of bed after getting back (again)
from an extensive travelling absence and the subject line caught my eye, so
forgoing hundreds of older posts, I clicked.................and I can only say
that
I am truly saddened beyond belief.

All of The Gants are such wonderful people- we and their whole crew of happy
"groupies" shared a hotel in NYC, and I have so many great memories of their
antics and dry, droll, southern rolling commentaries there and backstage at
CAVESTOMP!2000. I know Neil the SF shutterbug was clicking away all fest, and I
have some semi-decent digital cam pics of some of the show as well, so I hope
those can get *out* there quickly. What genuine, nice, GOOD folk, as wordy as
I am, I'm truly at a loss.

Jon Weiss (who woke me up w/a call earlier this morning) may or may not know
this as of yet, so I'm gonna call him back asap as he has the guys' numbers and
addresses (Gants).

Thanks for bringing the news, Jeff, but wow, it's really, really saddening,
since I just met him so very recently and really, with all
sincerity, have raved about The Gants not just musically but personally; they
were truly some my favorite new musical friends.

Thanks for the corrections re the Escorts "C'mon Home
Baby." I wasn't sure that it was an original Escorts
composition, but I knew it wasn't a more familiar
cover, like "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" or "Mad Mad World,"
both of which the Escorts also covered.

Don't forget that the Addrisi brothers also wrote
"That's When Happiness Began," a hit for the Montanas
in the UK, and a garage-pop classic by the Grains Of
Sand.

For British beat that sounds like American garage, you
can't beat the Escorts version of "Dizzy Miss Lizzy"
which was a number one hit in Texas because the
drummer's cousin was a deejay there.

AND for those who don't know, "Head To Toe" featured
Paul McCartney on tambourine.

I love a lot of the horn rock bands of the '60s,
especially those from Chicago before there was a band
by that name. The Buckinghams, especially. And then
the Outsiders from Ohio. There was a "live" Outsiders
LP where they simply took the masters of several of
their album tracks, mixed out the horns, and had the
band record some covers sans horns, which was all
overdubbed with audience sounds. The results were
mixed, and on the familiar Outsiders songs, the sound
was decidedly not as full as it was with the horns.

As far as Bob Kuban and The In-Men go, I love "The
Cheater," which is one of those incredible oldies that
aren't played on "oldies radio" nearly enough. I have
a reissue 45 of that song, backed by the
similar-themed "The Teaser." The murder of "Sir"
Walter Scott is one of those great rock tragedies that
still has an air of mystery to it. Does anyone know if
they still show that episode of "Mysteries And
Scandals" on E!?

Hey, if Del Shannon can get a cut on the "Teenage
Shutdown" series, there's something to be said for
that!

I have an excellent comp of Del Shannon on the UK
Music Club label, which I think is called "Presenting
Del Shannon," and contains 32 cuts from 1962-66.
Unfortunately it leaves off the later stuff such as
the haunting "Sister Isabelle." The difference between
that stuff and "Runaway," etc. is amazing. Sort of
like Brian Hyland going from "Itsy Bitsy Teeny Weenie
Yellow Polka Dot Bikini" to "Gypsy Woman" in the same
space of years. In both cases, the in-between years
are well worth checking out (Hyland's 1965 hit "The
Joker Went Wild" is a fave of mine).

BUT, attention US readers, there is a nearly identical
version of the Music Club CD available in the US. Same
cover, same notes, but it only includes 16 cuts. The
UK version is a much better value.

this on the group, but just found out on the Garage66
list that Vince Montgomery of the Gants died in his
sleep a couple days ago, at the age of 54. Just a
number of weeks after the big Gants reunion at
Cavestomp.

The death was of natural causes, Montgomery's health
was pretty bad for a while. I don't think it would be
disrespectful at all to crank up "Road Runner" in his
memory, and let Montgomery's awesome bassline speak
his eulogy...

I'm not aware of this. I know of Punky Meadows, formerly of the English
Setters and Cherry People from Washington D.C.

It wasn't Kuban, but the lead singer of the band, Walter Scott. I have a
live tape of Scott somewhere from circa '77, when he was doing a Neil
Diamond act, down to a lounge version of "I Am... I Said"! Anyone know if
there's any truth to the rumor that Walter Scott recorded with "Miss St.
Louis of 1927", Lucia Pamela?

Too bad for you...cause they out on a great show last night here in
Calgary. I woke my girlfriend up when I tried to slip quietly into bed
after the show, and when she asked me how the band was...I couldn't even
tell her, cause I'd lost my voice from hootin' and Hollerin' all night!!!
They played a long set, and didn't even stop between songs to catch their
breath. I don't know how they do it...I was exhausted half way through
there set. If you like their records, they'll blow you away live. If you
don't like theor records (???)...they'll still blow you away live!

I was making a tape of BFTG material for someone yesterday and for the
first time in about 2 years started reading the liner notes for Volume 8. I
noticed that, although Tim says that he hasn't compiled a volume in 8 years,
there is no mention that Volume 8 is, in fact, the final Volume. What I mean
to say is, does anyoone think there is any chance in hell that there could be
another BFTG ever?

Remember them?! I've still got their White Hot LP upstairs! I really
liked that when it first came out... in fact, theirs was the first version
of "Ain't Gonna Eat Out My Heart Anymore" that I ever heard. In addition
to the aforementioned Punky Meadows the band also included Greg Giuffria,
who had a decent solo career in the '80s.

One of the articles on this page
<http://www.webaccess.net/~arwood/thesightofblood/Angel/Articles/circus.htm>
identifies bass player Felix Robinson -- a later addition to the band -- as
the former member of Bob Kuban and the In-Men.

Three versions come to mind immediately (it's funny that they are probably
not the most obvious ones...):

The Dentals -- from Germany; just listened to their live version of root
this morning; it's on the new volume (12) of Prae Kraut Pandaemonium.

The Chancellors (?) -- The same band that did "On Tour" on Back from the
Grave 8 (or was it 7?).

Messerschmitt -- band from the late 80's early 90's from ex-Yugoslavia;
their killer version of Route 66 is on their first LP "Foxxin'".

Yeah, I have it, along with BigBeat's two comps of Japanese "Group Sounds",
great stuff all-around, but the songs sung in their native language can
become tiring, mainly the ballads.

- -burial service will be in his hometown on Saturday

Anyone wishing to email condolences may send them to this email address:

Never saw it, but I do have the book that explored the murder in minute
detail (THE CHEATERS---THE WALTER SCOTT MURDER by Scottie Pressmeyer, ca.
1997). BTW, that wasn't Kuban who was murdered, it was his lead singer,
Walter Scott. That's Walter's voice you hear on "The Cheater." Kuban (the
drummer) is still alive and playing the oldies circuit around St. Louis, MO.
