Hi y'all,

Lunchtime! Bomptime! Yestertime!

On February 1, in

1928, Frank Stokes recorded "Bedtime blues", "Downtown blues" and "What's
the matter blues", in Memphis;
1958, Elvis Presley recorded "Doncha think it's time", "Wear my ring around
your neck" and "Your cheatin' heart" at Los Angeles' Radio Recorders;
1959, the Nighthawks recorded "Good time girl" and "Queen of love" at
Norman Petty's Studio in Clovis. These guys were from Texas and, as far as
I know, are not connected to those Washington DC Blues Rockers;
1963, Dion DiMucci recorded "Fever" and "Gonna make it alone" at Los
Angeles' Columbia Studios;
1967, the Beatles recorded the title song for their next lp, considered by
some to be 'the most important lp of all time'. Some others think it's
slightly overrated... The song, recorded in 9 takes, got one more take,
Paul's lead and the group's backing vocals, on Fab. 2;
1967, the Beaux Jens recorded "She was mine" at Sparta's Great Lakes
Studios;
1967, Wilson Pickett recorded "Funky Broadway" at Sheffield's Muscle Shoals
Studios;
1967, Joe Tex recorded "Show me", in Nashville;
1970, the Free recorded "Remember" at London's Trident Studios;
1973, Rory Gallagher recorded a BBC session at London's Paris Theatre.

That is't!

L8er,
Jan (suffering in silence: roommate on the phone, afterwards: "Back from
Rio", Roger McGuinn)

I have a CD of theirs which has their first two albums on one disc. It is indeed quite an entertaining listen, if not always for the reasons they intended. I love the raw 1960's Beat era intensity of tracks like 'Furry Furry '66' and 'Johnny B. Goode' and the innocence of 'Little Robby.' And while their Beatles/Animals covers sometimes work and sometimes don't, the Spiders never throw aside their spirit and their vibe of just simply a bunch of young guys with lots of energy and enthusiasm. But for me, almost as cool as the music is that cover photo of the first album. I love the way that some of them go for the John Lennon 'A Hard Day's Night' look, cap and all.

But I also have to admit that I have played this CD for one or two friends for comedy sake. One track I played was 'Michelle,' which starts out fine. The band plays well, and the singer, for the 'Michelle, ma belle' verses sings gently and does a good job. But MAN! When he got to 'I love you I love you I love you!,' which the singer shouts maniacally like an amateur on karaoke night, we were dying!

Now someone PLEASE answer this question. In the 1990's, there was a weekly TV series of 'The Best Of Ed Sullivan.' I'm pretty sure that one episode of this show had a Japanese rock group. I don't remember their name or what they sang, or even if it was a cover of some song we'd know of. Does anyone remember who this was?

Yeah, during Angel's concert sequence, that would have been the first time I

Hello Bompers and Bompettes,

I'm here to preach the word of W.A.X. to ya.

What's that you might ask?

It's very simple really: We got 12 kick ass bands to give us two songs each.
We're pressing 'em onto good old fashioned 7"s (some color, some black
vinyl) and all we're asking is that you subscribe to the series. Then every
other month for the rest of the year (or for 6 months if you'd rather),
we'll send you two freshly minted 45 rpms.

Two highly esteemed bomp-list members are putting stuff out through WAX, so
you definitely won't want to miss it!

Some of the bands in the line-up are: The Dirtbombs, Stevie and the Secrets
(featuring ex-Devil Dog Steve Baise), Causey Way, Dimestore Haloes, Electric
Frankenstein, and lots more.

OK, that's enough outta me. At the very least check it out at
www.withanx.com .

JS Freakbeat asked:
ive got this song in my head and i cant work out what it is- its some kind
of american folk-psych thing that goes
"the night has fallen again, and the reason flows from my fountain pen, i
began at the very end, one more step forward and ill desend".
Can anyone enlighten me as to what it is? its probably something really
obvious but i just cant think of what the hell it is.

Tony beat me to this - here's the compilation details -
Suicidal Flowers by Crystal Chandelier, their 2nd 45 from '69, first
appeared on
the classic Pebbles Vol.3 "The Acid Gallery" , later on the CD version and
The
Pebbles Box Set. Also on Acid Dreams Epitaph CD and The Complete Acid
Dreams.

One of my all-time fave 45s, the uncompiled topside Your Land Of Love is
quite
wonderful too - a moody orchestrated ballad with hispanic guitar
flourishes.
They were from Providence, RI - not Texas as was suggested for many
years.

I saw The Jam open for Angel in Allentown, PA in

correctly, the Angel set opened with the band members

although this was well before Spinal Tap.

BTW, the joker that went on to Guiffria was

some pretty cool bands currently on release. I think The Warlocks are
especially Bomp-worthy, with a sound ranging from the Velvet Underground to
the Fuzztones, and more. Those interested may check out Fred Mills'
just-published review:

Subject: Bad Manners frontman hospitalized

BBC News 02/01/01 -- Buster Bloodvessel, the frontman of 80s band Bad
Manners, is seriously ill in hospital after collapsing on stage during a gig
in Italy, it has emerged. The singer, real name Douglas Trendle, 40, was
taken ill during his trademark energetic show during a European tour on
Wednesday night. He was taken to hospital in Perugia, northern Italy, with a
strangulated hernia. Doctors have said he needs an operation urgently, but
because of his size - he weighs some 30 stone (400 pounds) - they are
worried he might not survive surgery. A spokesman for the singer said: "He
is very worried and wants to come home but the doctors have said they must
operate. Unfortunately he is so big that any operation could be extremely
dangerous." Bloodvessel, whose band has had hits with Lip Up Fatty, Special
Brew and Can Can, is married with two children, Charleigh, nine, and Trudi,
six. Bad Manners formed in 1979 and had a string of hits during the 1980s.
Bloodvessel, who once owned a hotel in Margate, Kent, called Fatty Towers
recently appeared in a TV commercial mocking his poor financial state.

Hello all,

Sorry that I've been so behind lately, I think Bomp has more Digests than
just about any other list I'm on, and work has been nutz! I work for a
certain online music store, and if you've been reading the news lately, you
can well imagine.

Anyway, if any of you are in the Philadelphia area on Thursday, February 8,
I'm doing another one of my Sugar Towns again (girl bands + DJ's). It's at
The Balcony (above the Trocadero, 10th and Arch, 215-922-LIVE), $6, 21+,
doors at 9.

Featured entertainment for our anti-Valentine's day edition is Gal Lombardo
(2 of the founders of mid '90s Philly garage band Mae Pang), who are mixing
things up with sort of a Wanda Jackson feel, and plus they do a killer cover
of "You Don't Own Me." On the artier side is another Philly band, Bilenky
Cycle Works, who remind me of a bit of Siouxsie and the singer's a dead
ringer for The Busha Tetra's Cynthia Sley.

My fellow DJ's and I will spin rockin break up songs by fabulous ladies all
night long. And we're also starting up the Sugar Town merch table with zines
and other items by/for women.

If anyone wants to get in on the action in any way, or just to make a
request, e-mail me offlist...Or maybe we can start a discussion of good
break up songs!

In other news, has anyone seen The Gossip, White Stripes, or Slumber Party
play? I'm eagerly awaiting their Philadelphia appearances.

Rock on...

Margaret tells me I should remind you all of the Scram party, this
Sunday night from 6-9 at Holly Matter Modern Art, 710 N. Heliotrope Dr.
(at Melrose). So you are reminded. Bangers and Mash will appear.
Janet Klein and her Parlor Boys may appear, but an injury that Miss
Klein has suffered could make that impossible. Fingers crossed she can
make it, but we hope you'll come by anyway. It will be fun.

The Montanas had one record make the Billboard charts, "You've Got To Be

I got a great CD of the Golden Cups a few years back from Metro Music.
Dunno if it's still available or not. Contains a totally freaked out "Hey

Here, here, Greg!! I wholeheartedly agree...the Warlocks are amazing!...
Too bad this very fine review of Fred's hasn't yet been re-printed in the
L.A. New Times, the local alt weekly affiliated with all of the other New
Times papers, including the Phoenix New Times...what's wrong with the
local L.A. free weeklies? They rarely review L.A. bands' releases unless
they're Tsar or someone less interesting...where was the smallstone
review?

I saw Angel (headliners) along with The Godz and Head East
at the Long Beach Arena...circa 1977 or so. One of my first
concerts I think...I remember that the four boxes were brought
out by the roadies, one by one, and stacked on each other...
then the fog/dry ice kicked in and the giant hologram Angel
face logo thing began speaking to the audience...something like
"On earth as it is in heaven," etc. Then the band burst out of
these boxes, like a magic trick! Very funny...Punky Meadows
played slide on his guitar with a Heineken bottle...uh, they had
a few other tricks too...then got back in the boxes and Poof!!
Hah hahahahahaaa

Bryan

P.S. Also saw the Jam (at Royce Hall, UCLA) and the Santa
Monica Civic, but not with Angel...

Heh... it would have been IDEAL if at least one of the boxes wouldn't open,
hehehe. I have a video called "Inside the Casbah... A History of
Casablanca Records and Filmworks" with a pretty amusing Angel segment...
All that hair and all that spandex... wow...

Yeah, that must've been the same tour 'cause the
Godz were on the bill in Allentown as well.

Note: These Godz were a biker/boogie band from Ohio,
not the 60s psych band.
