Ken Shaw sez:

<<I seem to remember reading that on Jumpin' Jack Flash Keith Richards used an acoustic guitar played into a cheap 1960s portable cassette recorder which overloaded giving lots of distortion. Good to see that low-tech sounds better than high-tech even for millionaire rock stars.>>

I'm with you in spirit, but the song you're thinking of is "Street Fighting Man." And it's an electric with no amp. On the intro, you can hear the tape wobbling. Fantastic sound.

From HOODOO:

<<The Shames and the Buckinghams are overlooked by most garage fans (except for me and Mike F.), but if you like this kind of Garage Lite, it doesn't get any better. I always did like both bands' take on psychedelia---they were hip enough to pick up on the innovations of the time (I hear a lot of PET SOUNDS in some of the Shames' later work), but there was a certain AM radio innocence that most U.S. bands were losing track of.>>

Oh yes. "Could Be We're In Love" practically DEFINES summertime for me, along with "I Wanna Meet You"....I could go on and on. And if you ever wanna give a real garage/psych fan a heart attack, play him or her "Greenburg Glickstein etc." and don't tell 'em who it is.

It's also correct that those three LPs are pretty easy to find....but for anyone who doesn't have the time or inclination to chase 'em down, I'll point you to the Sony Legacy CD best-o' from a few years back. Bob Irwin assembled it, and what ELSE do I need to tell you? But, for details....they manage to include pretty much everything you really need, including that 45 version of "Mr. Unreliable." One beef: the CD does focus solely on the sunshiney stuff (except for "Greenburg", which is on there) and avoids most of the swirly psychedelia from "Scratch in the Sky" but it's a darn good place to start. Also: if you already HAVE the LPs, there are some b-sides on there and also a really heart-stopping unreleased folk/psych song by Jim Fairs called "The Warm" which would have been very much at home on "Notorious Byrd Bros."

If you ever wanna win a music trivia shootout, by the way....the Cryan' Shames were the only band I can think of who ever released two singles in a row in which the final verse modulates DOWN a key....I know that's arcane, but it's a really weird musical trick, and to use it TWICE is even weirder. ("Sugar and Spice"/"I Wanna Meet You.")

And while we're still in Chicago, let me tout a guilty pleasure: Aorta. Their second LP (with Michael Been) is kinda forgettable, but the first one (which has been booted on CD in Europe and is fairly easy to find) is a killer if you like heavy pop/psych.

Just got a tape of the Greenhornes new album that's coming out on Telstar
sometime in the very near future. You'll have to get a copy of Shindig!
to read a proper review - but lemee tell ya, this is goooood, much better
than their debut (which itself was pretty cool), capturing much more of
the energy of a live show, this is top notch stuff... Not too keen on
hearing covers of Spencer Davis and Eric Burden to be honest cos very few
people can match their vocal talents and one can't help but compare the
Greenhornes' version with the 60s recordings of the songs. But that said,
you all are gonna totally love this record. Take Nancy's advice and go
see the Greenhornes on 31 March in New York. Wish I could be there too. --

I believe that Keith used an electric guitar and electric powered

Casablanca may have realized disco was dead but that didn't stop them form dressing up it's corpse in funny sunglasses, skinny ties and min skirts and pushing it off as "new wave." Hence Suzanne Fellini, who's big "hit" on some NYC radio stations cira 1980-ish was "Makin' Love on the Phone" . That just about ripped off every Blonde lick (no slag to Ms. Harry and crew) and just barly left the oppressive thump thump and high hat beat behind. A real pearl right down to Suzanne breathlessly yelling through a phone, "Yes, Yes, Let's get on dressed!"

Add my name to the list of devoted Cryan's Shames garage fans. Of course, I
live in Chicago, too, so it come with the territory. I inquired on adding
the Shames to the Cellar Reunion that I helped organize in '99, but the
primary organizers decided to stick to their "gang" (it was organized by
friends that went to the same High School and were friendly with the bands:
Shadows Of Knight, Raevens, Same, Saturday's Children, and Boston Tea
Party). The Buckinghams are also great...but are much more "oldies"
friendly than the Cryan' Shames are...even here in Chicago.

hey, both of you guys - i pulled the shames' legacy "best of" off the shelf
today for the first time in a while - i'm listening to this now. i totally
agree w/ hoodoo that there is an innocence to this stuff that is very
reminiscent of pet sounds, with that yearning sound, that kinda sweet,
breathy AM innocence that was really getting lost by '67. i love this kind of
garage music. (& let me get in a plug for the critters again, if you dig the
shames' stuff, you're sure to dig the critters!!)

anyway, i really love stuff like "i wanna meet you," "we could be happy," &
"it could be we're in love." this was a great band. i've often read the crayn
shames' kinda shrugged off in a lotta zines, in favor of the tougher chicago
sounds of the shadows of knight etc etc (which i also dig), but there is
always a place in my collection for this kind of sunshiney pop garage, more
on the beatles side of the track than on the stones' i suspect there weren't
more "pop-garage" bands like the cryan shames around, because there was some
real (warning - UNCOOL OPINION in 3 seconds, 2,1...) musical ability required
to sing and play stuff like "i wanna meet you," & musical ability is a good
thing.

anyway, thanks to both of you for reminding me how GOOD this stuff is!!

Subject: CD-R labels & plastic shrink wrap side effects

I have been wondering about the potential side effects of CD-R labels
on CD players and plastic shrink wrap on vinyl albums.

When I bought an internal CD-R burner, it came with some free NEATO
"Matt Photo Quality" labels that you press on to CD-Rs using a CD label
applicator. I printed one out and it pressed on top of the CD-R very
flat and flush. Is there potential for these labels to "gum up" and make
a CD player stick/skip? Would it just be "safer" to write out the info
with one of those CD-R pens?

My second concern might sound novice to the "expertian" (and helpful)
collectors, but I have heard rumors that leaving the original shrink
wrap on record covers has the potential to warp the vinyl. Please let
me know if this is just a myth or a real reason to strip off the vintage
shrink wrap (with the defunct department/record store price stickers).

Advance Thanks,
Ted
