Well, not from the 60s, but one 60s/garage-type act from the late 80s or so
on Long Island - The Sporting Bachelors ("best" known for their LP _Love
Letters To Joanna_) - supposedly did a few. I remember them being quite
enthusiastic about rerecording "Bright Lights, Big City" as "Bright Lights,
Big Titty". Whether this ever appeared in a film or not, I couldn't say.

I don't see what the problem is - at the very worst, they're (mp3's) little
different than making a tape copy of something (which we ALL have done) but
it actually sounds better.

I don't suggest mp3 downloads will ever satisfy the record collector bunch -
they will suit the mass public in 5-10 years though. I don't think the
average Joe Hip Hop cares too much whether or not he's got nice packaging to
go with his music.

I for one like the fact I can get 'hard to find' stuff off of Napster and
that people can listen to my band over the web. I still make the effort
though, to buy the TS comps and the like, because I want to support the
scene and the people that work so hard to put 'em out.

There are two totally different versions of Shake Some Action, it is not a
remix. If I recall correctly, the lp version was recorded in 1972, with Dave
Edmunds producing. The 45 version was recorded in 1976, I think, and lacks
the massive sound of the lp version. Both versions are worth owning, if only
to hear the differences. The Reducers do a killer live version of Shake Some
Action, the vocals are killer.

Subject: Knights of Fuzz audio compilation & MP3 sound quality

I'm finalizing the audio compilation for the "Knights of Fuzz" CD-ROM,
and I read in a recent post here someone writing that "Anybody who
thinks an MP3 of a garage song sounds 'great' is full of shit."

I respectfully offer my opinion: Low-resolution MP3s can sound poor, but
as a recording producer with more than 15 years experience creating
garage records, I'll say that higher-quality MP3s can sound remarkably
good.

The MP3s we're creating for the "Knights of Fuzz" audio portion are
high-resolution
128 Kbps versions, made professionally in our studio. The transfers
we've made from vinyl have been carefully created. I'm listening to the
"Knights of Fuzz" MP3s right now, and yes, I think they sound great.

The MP3 format has also helped make a disc like ours possible. Because
of its small file size, we're able to fit the 26 audio songs along with
7 music videos, a complete book, plus hundred of other features -- all
on one CD!

I'll post the complete audio band line-up in the next day or so. All of
the tracks, by the way, have been licensed legally from the bands or
record companies. That's no small feat, as anyone who's attempted to
produce a compilation can tell you.

Many thanks to all who have helped!

indie/garage/psych labels that are putting out comps, or are accepting
submissions from new bands.

I know there's got to be a few people who work @ some record companies on
this list... so I figured this would be a great place to ask. Also -
there's alot of musicians here - so maybe someone can point us in the

We have our new single "Sitting on a Cloud" available on the 'net in MP3

I dig the Lyres covers of The Pretty Things and The Kinks, such as "You'll
Never Do it Baby" and "Love Me Till the Sun Shines" among others. But let's
say you're talking about "S.F. Sorrow" - I don't see the point of anyone
taking on material like that since it's already so brilliant and unique.

My idea of a perfect song is "Marquee Moon". I would also nominate "Break It
Up" by Patti Smith because of that aching melody and the way it builds to
those vocals and guitar crescendos on the refrain. I think it's the
uniqueness of the artist (who sings like Patti or Tom? Who plays guitar like
Tom? No one) in addition to the quality of the material that makes a cover
version sound disappointing.

Also, belated thanks for all the Lulu info. "To Sir, With Love" was on TV
last night. Not as gritty as the earlier British new wave films but
enjoyable. I loved the museum scene! I think the lps I'll look for are the
ones Nancy and JJ mentioned. Although a CD comp of her early EPs looked
good.

I would find that really hard to believe, considering two things: one, the
band hated their name the Golliwogs (itself sort of a racial slur), forced
on them by their label early on and two, they covered a fair amount of black
soul and blues material which would be seem weird if they were racists. Of
course, Skrewdriver covered Chuck Berry and they were racists, but they were
also idiots.

I just recently got the Spiders CD on Big Beat and
really like it for the most part. Some of it is hit or
miss. I do like their version of "Johnny B. Goode"
(especially the part where the singer gets his
consonants mixed up and sings "you will lee the beader
of a big old band"), but for me their version of
"Inside Looking Out" blows it away in terms of
demented vocals. It's interesting to hear the English
lyrics and odd intro for the '66 version of "Furi
Furi" ("Be quiet! Are you crazy? We are not crazy
cats...we are Spiders!") I even like some of the
ballads, although they have to be much too syrupy for
most GS fans.

I also got the Big Beat CD of Los Shakers in the same
order and am much more solidly impressed by these
Uruguayan Beatles. "Break It All," "Do Not Disturb"
and "Thinking" are particular standouts to me. And my
gosh, they almost look more like the Beatles than the
Beatles!

Oh yeah, I love the Shames and the Buckinghams. Didn't
they reissue the Cryan Shames albums a while back? All
I have is the Columbia "Sugar & Spice" compilation.
Maybe the folks at Sundazed can do for the Cryan
Shames what they did for the Bucks and put out
reissues of the albums. The old Columbia CD is good,
but Sundazed could make those albums essential.

I've heard "Sugar & Spice" on Dick Bartley's Saturday
night oldies show. I'm sure it got some airplay after
the Nuggets box came out, as "Sit Down I Think I Love
You" by the Mojo Men got on our local oldies
station...

Probably my favorite Shames tracks are "It Could Be
We're In Love" and "I Wanna Meet You." The latter
comes directly after "Ben Franklin's Almanac" on the
Columbia CD and it's a neat little transition after
the end of "Almanac."

And as I've said before, I also like the New Colony
Six. I think I can do without some of the tracks on
the "Quill Records Story," but that could have
something to do with the sound quality. A lot of the
songs are rather ho-hum IMHO. And I'm not even talking
about "The Graduation Song."

Of course, Dunwich Records are killer, but you can't
really compare groups like the Shadows Of Knight or
the Del-Vetts with the Cryan Shames, the Buckinghams,
or the NC6.

I have to agree with Mike here, as someone who appreciates a wide range of
'60s sounds, from balls-out teen-snot to moody folk-rock and wiggy
psychedelia. My only real thing to add here is that perhaps Tim is a bit at
fault here for the attitude amongst younger garage fans that everything be
"Back From The Grave" style psycho-punk. This is not meant as a slag against
Tim, because (and even though we differ on opinions of things) I hold him in
the highest regard for the amazing stuff Crypt has released since it's
inception (there are very few Crypt releases or bands I do not love). That
said, BFTGs certainly put forth the concept that the stuff on them was the
real, true garage or punk of the '60s. Just look at some of the covers,
where other forms of music dubbed "suckadelic," or "soul" are being heaved
into the pile of burning records along with "disco" and "alternative." To
the young, impressionable whose ears are not quite open yet, they may take
stuff like that as the gospel truth, thus ignoring what I think are other
valued forms of music. I think also that even Tim might admit that he
himself has become more open over the years, getting into soul, funk and
other stuff. There are things he has put out in the last few years and
carried in his catalogue that I never thought I'd see him releasing or
carrying considering what I figured his tastes to be from his liner notes on
a lot of the early BFTFGs.

That said, I was really glad to see "Leave My House" by the Modds finally
get reissued again!

The version I have is Sire 6198 086 - not 6078 602, the single mentioned
above - that is "Don't You Lie To Me" b/w "She Said Yeah" and "Shake Some
Action", which came out a bit earlier than the single... Which version is
this? The album version, the single version, or another version
altogether?!?!?

I would have thought that before putting out an
"international" version of the "Nuggets" box, that
Rhino would have considered putting out a box
comprised of the poppier stuff that has appeared on
their original "Nuggets" LPs and the CD reissues that
came out in the late '80s.

Of course they did include a lot of poppy stuff on the
boxed set, plus the ones that were originally on the
Elektra LPs, stuff like "Sit Down I Think I Love You,"
"Run Run Run," and "Sugar And Spice." But they
obviously left off a lot of stuff from the CDs, like
Boyce And Hart, the Monkees, the Easybeats, and the
Left Banke. (Of course they already have the Monkees
well covered, and the Easybeats will be on the
international set). And especially from the LPs, like
Teddy & The Pandas, the Chartbusters, the Sunshine
Company, the Long Island Sounds, etc.

I'm pretty sure they could put out a "whole nother"
4-CD set of pop music obscurities, including the LP
leftovers and other semi-undiscovered tracks. Maybe
they're trying not to compete with Varese Vintage's
"Sunshine Days" comps, but I think having them all in
one place, probably with even more tracks included,
plus another awesome info-filled booklet, would make
it a big draw, especially for us fans of the poppier
stuff from the "garage/psych" era...

Hi, it's me!

Nobody can aim at my temple and compel me to buy the music I dislike. I've
the luck to know two pushers who allow me to listen to most of the records
before buying them. I esteem yours & Tim's efforts anyhow.

This is not my problem. Someone ascribed that to me.

The matter is that I've on other comps very many tracks compiled on TS, and
"never compiled" does not mean "worth while".

They could issue a correspondent double LP.

Yea, I like the raw, wild, dirt, rebel, bad, fast, violent garage punk and
everybody is free to love the rest.

Not that this has much to do with the above but it reminded that I read that
the Monkees (well, Jones, Tork and Dolenze) are going to cut new versions of
Monkees faves with the guy behind INSYNC and the Backstreet Boys, with
musical and vocal contributions from both of those bands. They will also
tour to support the new album. Doesn't that sound hideous?

Mike wrote, in part:

<<I responded that to expect another comp of "unknown" (45's that have not
appeared on any comp) garage singles that are the caliber of "I Said Move"
by the Aztex, and the Keggs is nearly impossible. If that is said person's
understanding of "garage", then he is missing the boat. I do not speak for
Tim, but I'm sure he'd tell you that trying to keep up the high standards
that everyone expects of a new "Grave" edition would be impossibly tough.
Tim does have high standards, and I can tell you that there are not enough
"paint-peeling" uncompiled garage 45's out there to make a solid volume. At
least not yet.<<

This ties in with the "perfect song" thread in that I think "I Said Move" is
one of those perfect garage songs. It's one that always stood out in my
listening to the BFTGs. Maybe we CAN agree on which are the best songs. And
I once asked someone years ago (when it began to dawn on me how MUCH of this
music was out there) "isn't this whole thing FINITE? There has got to be a
point where you just CAN"T come out with a really good comp anymore because
the best songs have already been comped!"

and B. Lepschi quoted the following:

>>"It all depends whether you're talking about straight, unironic,
revivalist retro or one of the numerous strains of pre-X and Gen-X irony,"
said Seth Burks, 29, author of the award-winning Athens, GA-based 'zine
Burning Asshole. "I've identified 22 distinct varieties of irony-informed
retro and non-retro aesthetics, including camp, kitsch, trash, schmaltz,
post-schmaltz, and post-post-schmaltz. It's time we addressed the woeful
inadequacies of the government's current retro-classification system.">>

Talk about absurd! Is he serious? And some of us thought MUSIC was
over-classified... (I like the name of the zine, though)! How can these
people appreciate ANYTHING when they insist on splitting hairs this way..

Hey,
I was wondering if anybody out in bompland could give me some leads for a northwest tour I'm booking for mid april. We're called Every Idle Word, and we're a fairly damagaed trio playing stuff in a no wave/post punk vein- or at least that's what I tell befuddled promoter types. Anyway, mail me off list if you've got any info. We're looking for places in Northern California, Oregon, and Washington.

I dunno what kind of a half-a-fag you think I am, but
if I am watching a skin flick, the last thing on my

Ha ha haaaaah! I don't think you can blame "selling
your soul to Beelzebub " for that one. The song
itself is not bad. The real villian in this case is
overkill (like it is with so many other songs).

okay, i already shelled out the big bucks for a metal carrying case for my

the "dj" store was the only spot with cases). anyway, point is, i need a good

and am having a helluva time finding something in nyc (you shoulda seen the
look i got when i asked mr. 'groove-is-in-the-heart' about 'em). any tips?

oh yeah, looks like i'm gonna have to go back and hear more throb-throb-throb
sounds as the case i got is just not bif enuf for a full night of spinnin' --
oh well.
