Gotta disagree with you, Roberto. It really pisses me off when a
compilation or anthology leaves off a track or two due to
standards...especially when there is obviously plenty of room to include it.
Let ME decide what is or isn't up to "standards". I like MANY garage
songs that get slammed by the majority of collectors, so let me hear the
damn song, and I'LL decide if it's up to my standards...not the compilers.
I do agree with you, though, on the Outcasts comp. For a Collectables
release, it's pretty strong...

Hello BOMP!ers. Well, it was the 1st annual C 'n' S Dirty Music Show in
honor of Valentine's Day. MJ Quirk wound up coming on and made the
(correct, after hearing the sound check) observation that I/we had done far
raunchier shows without any advance hype off of the top of our heads. Part
of it was my failure to recognize the time and how I used it and a few tunes
were played out of the sequence I had planned, so they didn't have the
effect I had hoped.
WMFO's internet link to the broadcast studio is back up. We got some
e-mail action and obeserved some folks pass notes on the various lists I'm
on as the show slithered along. Among the hard-hitting topics discussed:
Sex without love vs. love without sex, good/bad places to eat Mexican food
north of Boston, not getting any action even when you spin records on the
radio or own a guitar (after realizing MJ & I are the only people on earth
with no association with Bebe Buell), the Fluppi-the next best thing to
sweeping your crumbs under the tablecloth, and the six degrees of Denny Mc
Lain, Dean Chance, and Bo Belinsky (who along with former Red Sox outfielder
Tony Conigliaro went out with Mamie Van Doren).

here goes for 10 February:

*Wynonie Harris: Destination Love (V/A Atlantic Blues: Vocalists/Atlantic)

While I'm not a big fan, I agree---"Bend Me, Shape Me" is a killer song. And
going back to our discussion of stereo separations, the stereo mix of this
tune is ASTOUNDING. I just don't consider them garage, that's all. I love
Steppenwolf and Blue Cheer all day long, but I never thought those bands
belonged on a garage compilation either. All three of these bands appeared in
Rhino's 80's NUGGETS series, if you'll recall.

Now, if you want to defend the American Breed, I got another one for ya---"I
Don't Need Your Help" by Gary & the Night Lites (an early version of the
Breed). Ooh, this tune shoulda been a hit in a better world! Country-soul in
action!!! The soul comes from the lead vocals of Chuck Colbert, Jr. (himself
an ex-doo-wopper with Chicago's own Daylighters)...the country comes from the
witty, sardnic lyrics and downhome guitar! On the USA label, and pretty
earthy. Call it garage, soul, country, techno, callitwhatchawanna, I don't
give a damn, this is a mindfuck of a great 45!

Iam, agree that putting more money in Tim, Miriam,
Todd, Tony the Tyger's pockets, etc., is a GOOD thing,
because it hopefully ensures we'll get more great
current garage bands. But I think the answer there is
to make sure enough of us buy the NEW bands to make
their continuing efforts to release such stuff a worthwhile
endeavor.

Why do you feel that this is such a self-evident truth? Even aside from the
underlying opinion that "great" current garage music is worth listening to
at all (I think 99% of new, so-called garage music is completely boring;
you apparently like a lot of it -- and neither of us can prove that the
other's taste is wrong).

But even if you like these bands, why do you think it is more important to
support new music than old music? That's like saying you have to support
local bands, even if they stink.

I personally feel no obligation to help keep young bands in vintage gear
and hot rod stickers, or to encourage their dreams of quitting their day
jobs. If that happens for them, more power to 'em, but it's not my
responsibility.

Hey Jahna!

Don't stress out, there are lotsa fests happening this year. While there
is Garageshock happening in Austin the last week in May, there's also
another mini-fest happening (Garagecrock!) The lineup looks even
better for this one: the Down and Outs, Frigg A Go Go, The Jewws,
The Dead-ites, etc. And the Shakedown's lineup (what I know of it)
is looking pretty good, too.

And I'd bet that if you asked any of these bands if they'd expect to be paid
when someone reissues their singles 30 years from now, they'd say a very
emphatic YES.

<<This group was from Jacksonville, Florida.
The Soft 45 was released in late 1965. Their second 45 on Charay came out
in '66, but to avoid confusion with the Liberty group called the Deep Six,
the Charay 45 is credited as the Florida Deep Six. It is weak pop.
Evidently the "Major" Bill Smith, who owned the Soft and Charay labels,
had a penchant for snapping up masters and releasing
them on his labels, causing collectors to believe that everything issued on
those two labels had a Texas origin. >>

THE DEEP SIX came out of a Jacksonville band called THE VIKINGS, which released Rosemary/You're The One in 1964 (with a picture cover). Larry Dreggors and Billy Harden of the Vikings went on to the Deep Six and then later Mouse & The Boys (Mouse being Maurice Samples, also of the Deep Six). This is the M.O.U.S.E. on Bell Records. He's now a preacher in Jacksonville. Claude "Butch" Trucks was the drummer of the Vikings and is on their 45, but was not a member of the Deep Six. He instead went into a trio called the Bitter Ind, which is better known by the name given to them by Vanguard Records, the 31st of February. This info should be included in the liners of the forthcoming "Psychedelic States Florida Vol. 2" comp.

The other track cut at capitol was I Heard Your Name, which for some
reason has never got a real release. In the late 70's Cyril was talking
about some single he wanted to put out, and I mentioned that
they should use I Heard Your Name as the flip. He liked that idea, but
of course the planned single never came out. Sean Donahue and myself
interviewed Chris and Cyril on our Piledriver show on KSAN in
July 1979. This was when Jumpin In The Night was just being released in
the UK. They didn't have a copy yet so they brought in some cassettes
they had from the 1978 Rockfield sessions. Most of what they
had was just backing tracks with no vocals! Curiously enough one of
those was It Won't Be Wrong, the Byrds tune. This was never released,
and I'm not sure that they even finished it. The Groovies sat in
on Piledriver a few times, bringing in stacks of their favorite singles
to play on our "Swinging Singles Parties".

wait, you aren't saying that guitarists did NOT want to sound scuzzy? because by the well-documented use of the fuzztone over a byrdsian 12-string, they absolutely did. I've read interviews with Link Wray, Keith Richards, etc that they were looking for a violent, dirty sound. maybe scuzz ain't quite the exact language they'd use, but there were plenty of bands who brag in interviews that they disliked the Beatles "pop" sounds in favor of "raw r+b." come to think of it, in 60s slang, it would probably be "tough" or I read once, "cruel."

>Opening an attachment requires an extra click.

unfortunately some people set their attachments to open automatically, it's a big big no-no for obvious reasons. Outlook express is better about this than the full-version of Outlook (really).

mp3s:
I downloaded about 30 or so tracks by Canada's Collectors on Friday while I was at the office, while I was working on something else for free. If, for instance, I get really into the Collectors I will pick up a cd, but likely I won't keep the tracks.

similarly I have done this with dozens of prog or heavy psyche records, lots of stuff I don't want to buy or even keep on mp3 after I heard it once. Lots of 1971-72 funk stuff (which in this era of hip hop is very available on napster) which I'd never have bought otherwise, etc. Napster is almost exactly like what running a fanzine was like in the 80s, you'd get 10 cassettes a week and only actually buy one of those you liked best on vinyl.

But if no one's paying the royalties to the bands then one bootleg is no different than another on any moral ground. BFTG paid royalties to the majority of the bands, lots of comps do/did. You can tell by how much detailed info they put in the liner notes. I buy all the *major* garage comps, all the crypts, all the arfs, all the bomps, flaykes, dionyses and gear fabs, but there's no way I can buy everything that people talk up on this list and in other zines. none of us can and curiosity will always get the best of us. I actually would rather the bands get their percentage of their record's profits rather than even my best comping friends get 100% of the money- after all people I know in the HC scene are getting their 1981 singles bootlegged right when they have kids tuition to think about.

My "sell pile" is pretty small once I eliminated buying cds to "check them out" and used napster. I am aware that the local record stores are suffering, but the handwriting was on the wall in 1995. All the local bowling alleys are closed, the independent book stores, the independent drug stores and yes, the independent record stores. It's a tough thing, but nothing is going to turn back the clock and make them profitable the same way that no one is going to be able to raise a family of four on one factory salary again. We gotta make things work for us in a changing world and buying cds and using napster to check new stuff out works the best for me with the least "waste" on my part.

plus napster is great for live bootlegs you'd never pay for.

>He could be full of shit, as many audiophiles seem to be,

the best electronic archival medium is one that will have equipment to play it in 20 years. Betamax was better than VHS and I still have beta tapes I need to transfer off beta. I can't buy a new, inexpesnive, betamax in 2001 as much as I want to. I'm so poised for DVD-R it's not funny.

The cover is bit worn but in good shape. I'm a huge Lou Reed / Velvets fan and have no intention of parting w/ it but am curious as to how rare this lp really is and how much it goes for.

some greasy R&B, mod, & hot rod to round out the festivities. We had a ton
of new music this week: THE HELLACOPTERS, THE CASANOVAS, ANDRE WILLIAMS, 9TH
WAVE, plus new newly uncovered '60s garage punk like SONNY FLAHARTY & THE
MARK V ("Hey Conductor" CD - Bacchus Archives), MARK & THE ESCORTS (from the
"East Side Sound Vol. 2" comp. on Bacchus Archives) and THE HEARSEMEN (from
the "Legend City" comp., also on Bacchus Archives). Some good calls, good
requests, and good fun. This was one for the record books!

Pickwick International (SDLP-187) featuring "Cycle Annie" and "I've Got A
Tiger In My Tank" by the Beachnuts and "You're Driving Me Insane" by the
Roughnecks. The cover is bit worn but in good shape. I'm a huge Lou Reed /
Velvets fan and have no intention of parting w/ it but am curious as to how
rare this lp really is and how much it goes for.>>

I don't know what they're going for lately (I got one for 99 cents sealed in
a Canadian bargain bin once--I never intended to part with it either, but
that's a long story in itself, LOL)... but this reminds me (and I think
it's actually been covered onlist before, but hey, maybe someone will save
me a trip thru the Archives just this once)...

Even though "I've Got a Tiger in my Tank" is credited to The Beachnuts along
with "Cycle Annie" (which is DEFINITELY Lou's work, as is The Roughneck's
tune--great song!,--IGATIMT sure don't feature the vocalisings of Mr. Reed,
which makes me wonder if he had a hand in that tune at all. It doesn't show
up on The VU Etc. collection, which has both the other Soundsville cuts, and
The Primitives tracks as well... Just a case of The Beachnuts' name being
applied willy nilly to another track they had lying around?

Hey, Frankie, while you're at it, give a listen to the only other track on
there that caught my attention, "Johnny Won't Surf No More," hehehe. Who's
that track credited to?
Kinda reminds me of the surf tune Lucy sang on the Lucy Show episode where
she guested on the "Wing Ding" TV show ("My trousseau just lies on the
shelf... since his surfboard came back by itself...").

Considering that I have never heard a peep about this subject until its
unsupported - and still unsupported - post from a week ago, I have to say
that I can see the connection between CCR and the KKK. I mean, you can
tell just by looking at Fogarty...COME ON, PEOPLE!

Guess which song was used during tonight's episode of Futurama??
That's right, "Bend Me Shape Me," very much on the minds of Bompers
and TV animation fans alike...

I wasn't trying to "rouse" any "rabble". I wanted to know if there was any
TRUTH to a rumor I had heard, as I pointed out in my original
question. CCR wrote some of the most soulful music ever, and I would have
been disappointed if it was true. That's why I was ASKING. Thanks to all
the "gullible" people for setting me straight!

Yeah, I caught that tonight as well! Pretty cool. Also saw a Power Puff
girls episoded entitled "Meet the Beat-Alls." In this one, the villians
all unite to form the above, a group that succesfully (for a while) defeats
the Power Puff Girls. Most of the dialogue, imagery, and situations are
straight out of the Beatles songs and movies; there's even
a couple of cameos by the fabs as well! I especially liked the part where
Mojo JoJo meets the performance artist criminal monkey, in a neat parody of
how John and Yoko met. Highly recommended!
