I'm against home taping: I HAVE to home-tape for my friends, but I don't
want home-tapes in exchange (or money like tape-traders). Try to tell a
friend "I don't want to make a copy for you!" Where I live cassettes are
liable to a copyright-tax, that covers only the personal use, so I commit an
illicit. Unknown 60s bands don't get a cent from this tax. Now they will tax
MP3s. Really do most of compilers pay copyrights to the artists? BMI/ASCAP
don't know most of unknown 60s bands ever existed. In many countries, who
print a record pays a nominal figure for each copy. When a copy is exported,
in the new country is liable to another tax, that should cover always the
copyrights. Unknown 60s bands don't get a cent from that. The compiler has
to contact the bands and pay them personally. Do most of the compilers that?
I'm unprincipled univocally; most of compilers and who collects copyrights
are immoral guiltily. Compilers get my money, don't get my friends' one.
Feel free to lay this blame on me! Majors don't fear anything! Usually I
don't buy your records; thus I cannot home-tape them. Support small labels
and don't ask friends home-tapes, because they couldn't answer you NO! Share
a MP3 with other people through Napster? Who knows you?

 Tom,

The Swingin' Neckbreakers are not playing the Iota show.
In fact, to my knowledge, they generally don't do DC.
A band called the Redeemers (never heard of 'em) is opening.
Who knows, maybe the Redeemers come from the Woggles'
school of revival rock 'n roll.

Well, you make reference to european bands and, no offense meant, but I
think it is slightly improper, contexts being so different over here. There
is nothing to be compared in Europe to the black and whites relations (or
general absence of relations) in the US. To put it in a nutshell, people
flirting with extreme right in Europe are generally more xenophobic than
racist, while it tends to be the other way round in the US. Also, people
termed extreme right in Europe have a political agenda which is pretty
close to the ones that, say, Georges Wallace or Newt Grinch had or have.
Real extremist things like white supremacism or aryan shit (not to mention
militiaes, which are not possible here where arms are actually banned) are
very specific to America, as they are dealing with subjects which are still
touchy in Europe, where actual memories from the nazi times are still vivid
(except in the UK, something which can explain for the childish
provocations like Siouxsie's swastikas or New Order's name, bands which are
not having an ideology anyway). This said, people in Europe can at the same
time be xenophobes and have leftist or communist options, all the more so
in the UK which owns the toughest working class in Europe, or the thoughest
classes relationship, should I say. Hence the surprising lyrics in some of
the Smiths songs: in a Jean Genet (read: homosexual) way, Morrissey is
fascinated by the brit working class and allows himself, from time to time,
to revel into some of its most dubious beliefs. Pretty immature, if you ask
me. P.

Yes, they were involved in the Red Wedge thing back in the 1980s, an
anti-racism campaign using rock music to take the message to "the kids".
However, being supporters of the Labour Party *these days* merely makes you
a another shade of blue...not red at all. It's always been the case that
whoever you vote for you're still voting for capitalism, but nowadays the
so-called Labour Party are doing things that Thatcher only dreamed of
doing. Anyway, this isn't a politics list so I'll shut up now. -- PJ

Fleshtones/Neckbreakers are a powerful 1-2 punch.
These two bands are good pals and play off each other
during their respective sets. For a sample of what
this is like, go to:

Dave is correct; they're doing a (free!) show at Manitoba's in NYC that
night. And the next night, Sunday the 18th, they're playing in Philly with
the New Pornographers. That's the night before President's Day... did
somebody say "road trip?"

And while we're on the subject, the Neckbreakers and Woggles will be at
Maxwells on Friday, March 9! There's also talk of a midwest Neckbreakers
tour in the spring; dates will be posted on http://www.neckbreakers.com/
when I get 'em.

Actually, I am an American democratic socialist. By democratic socialism,
I mean that I reject both communism and capitalism. There are people in
the <A HREF="http://www.labour.org.uk/">British Labour Party</A> that are
democratic socialists like Tony Benn,
Dennis Skinner, and Dianne Abbott. Of course, a former Labourite like
Ken Livingstone is also an indication of Labour's socialism. There
are those that want RED KEN to come back. You are right about the
Tony Blair control that bastadised the socialist message of a once
noble political party. In America, I am a member of the <A
HREF="http://www.sp-usa.org/">Socialist Party USA</A>
which is America's version of what Labour once used to be. By the
same token, Billy Bragg is still a committed member of the <A

Unfortunatley, the <A HREF="http://www.labour.org.uk/">British Labour Party

be doing. But like you said, this is not a political list, so I am going
to say that's my two cents and that's it.

The Count (A.K.A. Joe Viglione). I have an old ep he did from the
mid-seventies (50p in the Record & Tape Exchange) complete with b/w photos
where he is wearing a Dracula cape and sliding down a bannister. In
another he is strumming a guitar under a tree but is without the cape
posing à la Jonathan Richman. My fave track on the disc is a tune called
"Whisky Mama" which has a nice'n'cheap keyboard sound. IMHO a song waiting
to be rediscovered and covered by a savvy beat combo.

To bring this one up-to-date, I believe that Nancy Neon is now producing
his show and this weeks edition could possibly feature a re-run of the
interview he did with the Flesthones in '98.

For those of you who don't remember or weren't around at the time, there was an effort to tax blank cassettes in the USA in the early to mid 1980's. Gosh! Who was leading this benevolent effort on behalf of artists? The Recording industry! Fortunately the concept tanked due to consumer opposition and the fact that they couldn't figure out a way to equitibly distribute the proceeds of this so called copyright tax. This was also the pre CD days where it was quite normal for people to buy the record and make a second copy to listen to in the car, on the walkman, et al.
I'm always more than skeptical of an industry which says they want to help artists by lobbying for a tax that will clearly benefit the industry and then takes so many bands for a ride when it comes to contrcat signing time.
Now subsitute MP3 for cassettes and we're back to the present!

friend "I don't want to make a copy for you!" Where I live cassettes are
liable to a copyright-tax, that covers only the personal use, so I commit an

The Count released a score of LPs in the first part of the 80s, with some
songs actually standing out pretty well, for instance and if memory serves,
'midnight' on the Miller-produced 'intuition element'. P.

Well, I do know about that one. I was playing guitar along side him. The
show was called Visual Radio and was hosted by The Count, also known as
Count Viglione. He runs Varulven Records and may have a copy of the
show. I don't have a copy myself, but he's the person to see on that
one. Highland has popped up on a few shows for Somerville and Cambridge
cable. I know he and I have backed up a few people at Stone Soup Poetry
and the shows have been broadcast. His Alice Highland show once got
broadcast as well.

Kenne has been quiet here, but he has been staying busy with music. He
may not be on the Bomp List as much, but the 15 or so emails I got from
him yesterday lead me to believe he has been online. Maybe cuz it's
Valentines Day he's feeling a bit blue, I don't know. Email him at
HighlandNews@webtv.net if you dare.

Sorry. I was being extremely sarcastic. I couldn't believe that an odd,
innocent question that no one could add a grain of "truth" to resulted in
so much speculation, with each reply containing the unfortunate association
of initials. It seemed like we were creating a horrible rumor out of
nothing. My intent was to "stop the madness."
