I just had "Hawaii 5-O" out looking up his dad's name when I read this-
Leon and Mel were in the Air Force and stationed here in Dayton at Wright
Patterson AFB. There was a Larry Taylor in the Ventures in the early 70s
also and I'm not sure if he's related.
Also- Dick Dale's teenage son is his drummer.

Howdy folks...

We (Mondo Topless, that is) got a show up in Worcester, MA on Saturday March
10th w/ The Nines and the Downbeat 5 (thanks, JJ!!!). Wondering if anybody
can suggest and/or help us out with a possible show the night before,
somewhere between Philly (our current state of placement) and Worcester. I'm
thinking NYC, Hartford, something like that. Kinda short notice, but I
figger what the heck. Feel free to email me off-list.

Thanks!

Sam :)

I thought the original was actually "Mo Gorilla" by The Ideals.

Whoops! Just saw this post from Brian. That's what I get for reading digests
backwards. The Ideals' "Mo Gorilla" is on the Shakin' Fit compilation on
Candy. I've never heard "The Gorilla." Interesting...

Yeah, I've listened to "Cosmo's Factory" about three times this month. It's
hard to tell the originals from the covers aside from my own and probably
everybody's superfamiliarity with the material. Pretty much all their lps
with the full line up are consistently R&B flavored, and Klansmen are
definitely NOT comfortable with "that colored music".
Bluegrass bands are where you'll typically find real nutzoid Klansmen types.
And I've developed a sort of classist/racist formula of my own where
bluegrass is concerned- you can always tell the truly great bands by how
severely ugly the members are. Any bunch of pickers that looks like a family
of trolls are guaranteed to blow away any band Dolly Parton can ever muster.

I never noticed anything right leaning in that LP but maybe it's because
english is not my birth language. I read somewhere that the drummer of the
original skrewdriver was actually a socialist and was very pissed off when
he heard that Stuart had turn the band into that white power bullshit combo.

With all the posts about racism, Skrewdriver, etc., I'm reminded of a
question that may be old news on this list, but I don't recall it ever
being addressed.

In short, what's the deal with the name of this band:

*JEWWS (Houston)

Since I think some of them are ON this list, I'm optimistic about getting a
primary-source answer and not just hearsay.

The "Run From Home" Unclaimed re-recorded for Voxx is one of the greatest
garage tracks from the 80s.

It's hard to choose among the ones included on the mini-lps The "Now" Sound
Of The Tell-Tale Hearts, Yard Trauma, and We're Outta Place or Sick Rose's
Get Along Girl! ep. BTW my faves come from Sweden: Backdoor Men's Out Of My
Mind & Crimson Shadows' Even I Tell Lies.

</lurk>

Just a quick response to the below, from the UK angle.

DAT tape machines as a consumer format never caught on here: too expensive,
too elitist, perceived as difficult to use, not
given much marketing push although a few titles did get released on DAT in
the early 90s (Smiths
and Nirvana are two I remember seeing). But audio DAT machines are standard
mastering equipment in most studios and
are often used in the field by radio reporters. Tapes are about a pound
fifty upwards (about $2.50) so I don't know if that includes any local tax
in the UK.

Minidiscs are far more popular here than in the US and are becoming
commonplace as a home-recording medium
to replace cassettes. Great format, I like them a lot.

cheers,
 Phil Dil

Hu ho, I didn't want to start a debate, especially this far from this
list's interests. But since you ask...

>>There is nothing to be compared in Europe to the black and whites relations
>(or general absence of relations) > in the US.
>
>What about the case of Maghreb people in France, or Turkish and Kurd people

Don't read me wrong: immigrants are getting as much bad treatments (from
silent despising to the occasional wanton murder) as in America, for people
are not better here. Difference is, the next generation is getting
integrated by the way of marriages. For instance and in the case of France
which I am of course more familiar with, immigrants from Italia or Poland
in the 20s or from Spain and Portugal in the 50s were in the same position
than people from Algeria or Sri-Lanka today: but nobody mentions them today
(ever heard of a so-called 'Italian issue' in France ?) because their
community (a word which doesn't belong to the local vocabulary) has simply
simply melted away into the rest of the population. Given the present rate
of inter-racial/inter-national marriage, a safe bet is that the same will
happen with their successors today. Now, this rate is 5 to 6 times what the
black/white marriages rate is in the USA; where black people didn't arrive
recently.

Sorry to confirm my previous comments (which on second thought may have
been considered as xenophobic towards America by this other subscriber who
commented on my post), but Front National, Vlaams Blok, OeVP, Lega and the
like have agendas no more extreme than Buchanan's one, I could even mention
Bush Jr here. Skinheads and other clowns in their following are no more
than a few hundreds in each of the countries considered, less than ten
thousand in all of the EEC. And they are not allowed to be exceedingly
dangerous because arms and racist propaganda (be it a book, a speech, etc.)
is illegal. So that even a notorious antisemite like Le Pen can't allude to
his weird 'beliefs' in public.

>Otherwise, I'm very excited 'cause I just got the Zombies box set! : )

Much more to the point, is true.
