it's because
english is not my birth language. I read somewhere that the
drummer of the
original skrewdriver was actually a socialist and was very
pissed off when
he heard that Stuart had turn the band into that white power
bullshit combo.>

I thought it wasn't only the drummer who wasn't too happy
with Stuarts extreme rightwing edition of the band. 'Cause
Stuart just took the name Skrewdriver. If i'm not mistaken,
none of the '77 era members were in any later line-up. So
it's almost a different band. Of course Stuart was too dumb
to think of a new name. Plus he probably thought and hoped
his old punk fans would go along on his nazi ride.

Subject: Re: home recording

The Recording Industry always thwarted the "supposed" best home recording
systems. Simply they didn't/don't supply originals on those formats.
Somebody mentioned Betamax for video. You don't find originals on reel-tapes
or DAT. These mediums are relegated to studios/hi-enders. Personally I
should never store BFTG tracks on a halved-DAT (96khz), and a stylus able to
grab up to 50khz, is wasted for the music I listen to. This is stuff for
audio-maniacs that listen to their amplifiers rather than music. Garage Punk
Unknowns sound as good on $90 Discman as on $1.000 CD-player/$1.000
speakers. Let's concentrate our attention on us, poor mortals: US JVC used
(do they still use them?) videotapes for mastering CDs. Yes, your stereo-VCR
sounds better than your deck-Dolby C! Do you figure yourselves storing music
on VHS-tapes? DCC, mini-disc, and mp3: the hi-fi industry says compression
erases those sounds that cannot be heard (mosquito's buzzing while train's
running). Bat-ears say it removes ambient-info. Actually it makes flat the
sound, but our sounds are already flat! So, what's the problem? DCC sounds
as mini-disc but it suffers tape degrading, and behind mini-disc there is
Sony (a conflict of interests?). Behind mp3 there isn't the recording
industry, and the hi-fi industry had to take the rear of the caravan.
Putting on one side piracy, mp3 is prejudicial to various interests. CD is
an obsolete technology: they always worked to give us the worst sound and
mp3 is a menace, because their next step was the solid-state.

It was fun. Very low-key. The only person I knew there (besides Twig, of
course) was Jeff "The Platterpuss" Shore. Most of the crowd seemed to be
either regulars or friends of the band. But it was fun. While overall I
prefer 'em loud and electric, this was a nice change-of-pace, with one or
two songs sounding better in this form.

Just the 80s in this list... (I'll hit the 90s later.)

A couple off the top of my head (and in no particular order)...
1) The Fuzztones - Bad News Travels Fast
2) The Vipers - Cheated & Lied (tho' there's a few more on that first LP
that are just as good)
3) The Mosquitos - Darn Well (atypical for them, but it's a monster)
4) The Stems - She's A Monster (like The Vipers, tho', there's a bunch more
that are just as good)
5) The Milkshakes - She's Just 15 Years Old (again, tons more are just as
good)
6) The Cheepskates - Run Better Run (but if anyone's looking for an instro,
"Xtra Collestrial" will be the pick)
7) The Lyres - "Don't Give It Up Now" (or "Help You Ann")
8) The Chesterfield Kings - "She Told Me Lies"
9) The Talismen - "Fleetwood"
10) The Miracle Workers - "Flashing Red Light"
11) The Misanthropes - "Why Do You Treat Me So Bad?" (monstrous guitar intro
and an overall blast)
12) The Original Sins - "Just 14" (or maybe "Not Gonna Be Alright")

Not sure about my picks for the Telltale Hearts, Gravedigger V, Pandoras,
Gruesomes, Creeps, Nomads, and tons more.

At the Dirty Water Club I use a DAT machine to record the bands, two
channels - one mic above and in front of the stage, the other through the
mixing desk. We play around a bit with the DAT on our mixing desk at home
and we're getting great results, no problems, everything works fine...

Hi y'all,

Time for a short break, Coffee 'n' Smokes, y'know...

On February 15, in

1954, Big Joe Turner recorded "Shake, rattle and roll", in New York. The
original;
1957, the Coasters recorded "Searchin'" and "Young blood" at Los Angeles'
Master Recorders;
1965, the Beatles recorded "Ticket to ride" (completed), "Another girl" and
"I need you" (both started, yet finished the next day) at Abbey Road;
1966, the Beach Boys recorded "That's not me" at Los Angeles' Western
Studios;
1968, James Brown recorded "I got a feelin'" and "If I ruled the world" at
Los Angeles' Vox Studios;
1997, the Oblivians played a radio gig at WMFU Radio in New Jersey. Which
city is that located in?

And in 1963 today, my little brother was born, giving him a birthday today
and a party tonight. In the early 70's he was a huge Sweet-fan, Wig-wam
bamming all the time... As I happened to get a load of Sweet cd's recently
(huge Thank-You- Very-Mucho to Jeroen, don't stop that rain!), I burned him
a nice cd, containing the Sweet's 17 Dutch singles and, as added
bonus-tracks, their versions of "My generation", "Paperback writer" and
"The man with the golden arm". That'll bring a sentimental tear to his
eye.... as will the accompanying bottle of Jameson.....

That's it, break over!

Jan (listening to "Blaxploitation, volume 1")

Plextor is the best brand in CD hardware. But it's computer-only. If you get
a stereo component one, then you can't make copies of copies and you have to
buy special non-copyable discs which cost more. If you don't have a great
sound card in your computer, your discs aren't going to sound as good when made
on you computer compared to those made on the stereo component ones. Stuff to
think about, I guess...

As long as Fuzzco is handin' over The Woggles dates, let's just remind
everyone that NYC is pretty happenin' this weekend.

Friday night is Deke Dickerson / The Greenhornes / The Come-Ons / The
Realistics at the Mercury Lounge

Saturday night features The Swingin' Neckbreakers at The Lakeside Lounge

Sunday evening is The Bomb Pops (at the Lakeside?)

Monday night, take your pick of The Greenhornes / White Stripes @Maxwells
or The New Pornographers @Brownies.

Me, I'll probably split for DC on Saturday to hang out w/my friend LJ and
see The Fleshtones, then hit Philly on Sunday evening for The New
Pornographers @the Upstage.

And you?

Absolutely put The Barracudas on the list!!! I'll take most anything from
that first LP. (And that includes the Canadian EMI re-ish of it from about
8-10 years back.)

Also, The Devil Dogs first LP came out in '89, so that'd have to be on my
list, despite the fact that I think of them as a 90s group. Same kinda
thing goes for another of my fave bands of the period, The Voodoo Dolls,
who recorded a single or two in the late 80s, but really made their mark in
the early 90s (esp. live!). The Vacant Lot's first LP was also a killer,
not to mention their first couple of singles ("She Gotta Leave"/"All Kindsa
Girls" and "Almost Summer"/"Cyclone"), but those were probably early 90s.

Back in the 80s...

I think I may wanna throw in "The Teen Scene" by The Splat Cats.

Oh yeah, and how could I possibly forget The Boys From Nowhere??? "Beg"
and at least a couple more.

Or The Lime Spiders "Slave Girl".

The Prime Movers (Boston) doing "Come To Where It's At". YEOW!

The Slaves (three of The Prime Movers) w/"Radio Daze".

The Phantom Five from NJ, with "She's Not" or "Great Jones Street".

Maybe the 90s are too hard for me. I did a fanzine throughout the decade,
bought a TON of records, went to a gazillion shows, and had a TON of fun.
Picking favorites is TOUGH!

Blair asked, so here's what Delectable Deena and I are doing on this
birthday blast weekend. We're flyin' to Atlanta to dig some Woggley
southern hospitality with esteemed former Bompers, Richard & Glynis at Ward
81 (or Birthday HQ).

It's what's happenin'...No squares allowed!

I totally agree with Blair's picks of the Mosquito's "Darn Well",
Fuzztones' "Bad News" and Lyres' "Help You Ann" (or perhaps "Soapy") as
well as Roberto's mention of the Backdoor Men's "Goin' Outta My Mind". Way
too many other faves for me to go through, but here's a handful:

Fleshtones - "Stop Foolin' Around" or "New Scene"
Kravin' A's - "Beatnik Girl"
Vipers - "Not To Be In Love"
Creeps - "At the Nightclub"
Birdmen of Alkatrazz - "April Dancer"
Things - "Trip To My House"

...and loads more by the likes of the Mystreated, Lust-O-Rama, Wayward
Souls, Satelliters, Green Hornets, Brood, Insomniacs, Hate Bombs, etc.

Good luck with the project, Tim.

Rocky.

I still think that "All Skrewed Up" is a great album...though, I must admit, that I'm not big on looking for meaning (or even listening to a lot of the lyrics) in punk rock songs. "A Matter of Pride" is not on the first LP, and if I remember correctly, is one of their first songs with rascist undertones...stick to the first LP and two singles, and I don't think you'll have any complaints. My faves are "Where's It Gonna End", "Government Action" and "I Don't Like You"...Great punk songs!!! I'll be the first to admit how much later Skrewdriver material sucks (both musically and thematically), but I can't fault anything they put out in '77.
