>From: Alan Wright Subject: RE: CDRs
>When the Castros recorded w/ Jack Endino, we did 16 track analogue tape,
mixed down to DAT and so we left the studio with analogue master reels of 1"
tape (the multitrack) and two DATs and a CDR, copied from the DAT which
sounded exactly the same. The other things is, while you can cut a record
AND a CD from DAT, you can only cut a record from certain analogue sources,
like reel tape. You can't make a master from a cassette, it'll sound awful.
That is to say, if all that exists of the band is cassettes or reels, you
have to transfer them digitally before you can put them on CD.

DAT-decks came out in the second half of the 80s, CDs at the beginning of
that decade: they made CDs from reel tapes before DAT and still they do it.
To make a digital copy on CD from DAT (I guess) you had to record on DAT
using the same sample-frequency (44.1khz) of CD (correct me if I'm wrong).
Therefore it should be like you record direct on CD, but CD-Recorders made
their debut after DAT in the last decade, and if they don't make masters on
CD, a reason there should be. The problem of reel tapes is the noise. The
problem of DAT is the sampling. I don't know what's CD-R's one. If I make a
DAT from a reel tape, I sample the noise too. What's the purpose? On CD,
when the source is analogic, you can hear the noise on background. When the
source is digital, not. When the source is analogic, during the transferring
on CD, the sampling cuts off the ultra-sounds (DAT does as much, during the
recording). We've not dog-ears therefore this shouldn't affect us, but we
obtain a sample of the original sound, bereaved of a large/little (??) part
of it already at the start. This is the difference undeniable between
analogic (reel tapes mastered on vinyl) and digital (DAT mastered on CD).
Does vinyl sounds better than CD? This is a never-ending story, and as
somebody said, many people don't know what's vinyl. To get CD to take-off,
they gave up printing vinyl.

The Animals were about the first 60s R&B band I ever became aware of, due
to hearing the killer 'It's My Life' on radio around 1977. That track
along with 'I'm Crying' are my faves by them. I was later to discover
just how influential the Animals were on the garage bands of the mid-60s,
right around the world. Check out 'Beware' by the Big Beats on Garage

Re the below...

The Revillos were at least half of the Rezillos, at least, that's how it was
initially. When the Rezillos split up in late 78 (that live album was put
out by Sire without their consent, BTW) singers Fay Fife and Eugene Reynolds
had the Revillos up and running and signed to Virgin within a few months.
ISTR there were various other ex-Rezillos on those early Revillos reckids as
well. Meanwhile a couple of the other original band members played as Shake
(two singles on Sire) and then guitarist John Callis joined the Human
League, yes THAT Human League who went on to have huge success in the UK in
1981-82 with a whole series of identikit electronic pop hits.

BTW does anyone have a copy of any of the Rezillos Peel sessions for trade?
I lost my tapes yonks ago. Email me off-list !

cheers,

Can you be more specific please? Which lyrics are you thinking about (though
I understand pretty well english when someone's talking, it's a bit harder
for me when they sing... specially punk rock). Same thing about "Case of
Pride": I don't understand all the lyrics in that song so I never noticed
anything wrong: so what's the deal?

 That
> aside, I feel uncomfortable having any Skrewdriver in my collection but
> that's me.

I understand that feeling... but then you gotta throw away your records by
Graham Bond (child molester), GG Allin (didn't he tortured a girl), every
Huey Meaux production (another child molester)... I still believe that it's
not a problem to listen to Skrewdriver non-racists songs though I also think
that it's wrong to play it when you're djing (radio or club) or doing cover
of their songs (that's why with the No Talents we did a rip off & not a
cover of "I don't like you"). You don't want anyone to think you're paying
any kind of tribute to Stuart.

That aside, I think Skrewdriver are pretty silly, especially
> considering I remember them covering Chuck Berry on one of their later,

For some reasons, even racists rockabilly rebels & teddy boys from Paris
always worshipped Chuck Berry... may be it's because, like them, he's such
an asshole.

Eric Burdon was at our local House of McBlues here in Boston less than a year
ago (I didn't go). I saw him with Brian Auger in Munich (I happend to be
there on business) about maybe 8 years ago. Very small bar, great show. He
muttered "I hate this fuckin' song" under his breath just as they started
House of the Rising Sun. Isn't there a "New" Animals playiing around? Don't
know who's in it.

JJ and I also caught the Animals reunion tour in the late 70s/early 80s. (my
memory isn't what it useta be...) Was THAT ever awesome!

I've got the original ANIMALISM album, and it doesn't have the cover versions

too! Even saw a revived version in '97 (only original members: John Steel &
Hilton Valentine) and they were just as lively as ever!

One of my fave Animals elpees is THE BEST OF ERIC BURDON & THE ANIMALS on
Scepter, which collects early, pre-hit, live tracks like "Bo Diddley," (not
to be confused with "Story Of Bo Diddley"), "Gotta Find My Baby," "Let It
Rock," "C Jam Blues" (featuring a drunk Sonny Boy Williamson, hijacking the
drums), etc. These songs have been reissued time and time again on different
labels---some of you might have seen this as IN THE BEGINNING, with an LP
cover that's ALMOST as ugly as Abkco's later BEST OF THE ANIMALS (with the
goofy "psychedelic" collage).

Wow. I didn't know it was all gonna be quite THIS important....so please note that I have contacted the US Patent Office and I will now receive a .0002 cent royalty every time one of you uses the word "Fuscareno."

ANYWAY...today (Saturday) being that sixth work-day of the week, I was gonna just go and catch the Greenhornes' set and rocket home to bed...but Jon W said I'd be doing myself a disservice if I left before Deke Dickerson played....so also said Blair, AND Blair also said I'd be doing myself a disservice of equal proportion if I got there late and skipped the Come-Ons.....well, y'know, I trust Blair; and anyway, after what Fuzzco wrote I figured I'd better see 'em, and clean my glasses first.

Well, slap me with a fish, they're a great band. And yeah, there IS that OTHER reason to see 'em. I was standing next to Alex Zorn, who nudged me and said helpfully, "You should try and focus on finding something about her that you DON'T like." That was timely.

Seriously, they are a great band. And, for all the fun we made of Blair, he must know something--he got to take BOTH of them home. OF course, he had to take the two guys as well.

Mike F.
I got home at 4AM.....

is this a british/american version discrepancy type of thing?i used to have
the mgm LP of "animalization" which had the band sort of sitting around in
plastic chairs in what looked like a studio canteen - and that one had
"maudie" and "gin house blues" and "dont bring me down" and "cc rider" and

the british "animalisms" - but wasn't there a US animalisms, too???? this
record had a cover shot of the band playing live.... boy am i confused!

in any case, i am pretty sure that the repertoire CD is the UK version of the
animalisms album, plus some ep and singles tracks.

wow!!! that sounds like a great collection - would you mind posting what you
have sometime?? this is something i have been interested in for a long time!!
somebody could write a kick-ass zine article about 60s rock
commercials...great shakes deserves a chapter all its own - the yardbirds,
the who & the blues magoos?? then there were those jefferson airplane levis
ads, and the who's air force ads, etc etc...what are some other ones? these
things are a lot of fun to listen to. the left banke did a great one for toni
home perm -"toni has EXTRA HOLDING POWER" & another cool one for hertz
rent-a-car..... - & that coke CD, which i heard is now totally unavailable
due to some kind of lawsuit - is also great.

the HP lovecraft one on the dunwich CD is a lot of fun, too....that kind of
doomy deodorant sound, bad trip BO, the dark side of body odor....ban wont
wear off as the heat wears on, or whatever.

60s commercials were great!

The thing that one has to keep in mind with all these early garage comps that
now sell for ridiculous prices is that most of the songs on them are now on
newer comps with much better sound.

can anybody recommend a good online source for record-collector type plastic

little adhesive strip on the side. i tried that bags unlimited place, the
place that advertises in goldmine, but i couldn't find an online catalog on
their site, looks like their catalog is print only (or maybe i'm just dumb, a

anyway, if anybody can recommend a good source for this kind of thing, i'd

<not sure how you got this thing hooked up but, you got to have the
turntable hooked into your receiver's phono inputs (as per usual... you
can't go directly into the burner. the signal from the turntable needs to be
brought up to "line level") and then from you're receiver into the burner.
the connection to the burner needs to be through the rca jacks as well, i
tried the optical connection and got the "check source" message.
well, at least that's how i got my burner hooked up and runnin'. and yes
it's the phillips duel deck and it has been super!
- -	-- Michael>

I hooked it up this way: turntable to receiver, then I took the receiver
tape out and put it to the CD recorder in, then the CDr out to tape in.
That's what Moreen said to do.

<What I should have said is that you cannot copy a CD that was made from an
ANALOG source at the faster rate, unless it is the "master" copy that you
made on your unit, or another unit. If I record a CD from my 45's via my
set-up, I can make copies from this 'master' CD at the fast speed. But if I
use a copy instead of the original master CD I made, I cannot make a copy at
fast speed. Ditto if someone records a CD of their 45's or whatever, and
lets me borrow it, I can make a copy at the fast speed IF the source CD is
the original master. If not, I can copy it but it will dub at the slower
speed.>

That makes sense. When I make a copy on CD from a tape, I always use that
master to make additional copies. I haven't tried to do a copy from a copy,
but taking your word for it, it will not work.
