Like I said earlier, mine are all white vinyl. I bought 'em right when they
came out. So you're all probably right about subsequent pressings changing
to reg'lar old boring black PVC.

But mine definitely aren't promos. Got 'em new and sealed. In a record
store that wouldn't have even known how to go about re-selling used stuff.

I'm pretty partial to the guitar intro to "Why Do You Treat Me So Bad?" by
The Misanthropes, one of the early Get Hip singles. I'm pretty sure this
was the only thing these guys ever put out. Too bad, 'cuz this is a GREAT
track and the guitar sound is completely wigged-out.

ok... 1st, happy new year, y'all! It was fun, but I'm glad the holiday
frenzy is come & gone.

I second the mentions of Violent Femmes, They Might be Giants, and Pixies
(was just playing Dolittle this am). Also, did someone mention Sparks??
Actually, it seems like they get their due more on this list than in the
'real' world. I've met a sum total of *one* person who was into them at all
(besides the two or so people I know who liked "Cool Places", tho they'd
never heard of Sparks previoously).

Glad to see I'm not the only Monkees fan, either. Now if I could only find
someone else who'll admit to liking Tom Jones....

How bout Clutch??! Anyone.....? I'm going to see tham at Irving this Sat -
can't wait! Just got turned on to them recently, and can't get enough.

I'm DELIGHTED to hear you mention this one. I'm ALWAYS blown away by it
when I hear the tune on the local oldies station--who played this solo,
anyway? Some others:

There's a KILLER solo on Tommy Roe's version of "Wild Thing"--up the neck
past the frets wildness; again, don't know who's responsible, but it's
great!

James Williamson, for every single note he plays on Iggy's "Raw Power" lp...

Ron Asheton, for "Loose" and, well, pretty much all of "Funhouse"--he has an
awesome sound on that record...

The Rivieras' "California Sun"--one note soloing at it's best!

Johnny Ramone--"I Don't Wanna Walk Around With You" Crazy fuzz chord
wildness!

Still trying to choose my fave moments by Link Wray and Cyril Jordan...

almost anything by ernie isley (isley brothers), hound dog taylor, or steve
cropper (booker t. & the mg's)
______

RUNNER-UPS - the solos on...
"Bold Soul Sister" - Ike & Tina Turner
"Louie Louie" - Kingsmen
"Mojo Hand" - Lightnin' Hopkins (original version on the Fury label, reissued
on Collectables)
"Six Days On The Road" - Dave Dudley
"Haunted House" - Sam the Sham & the Pharaohs (as much as I love Sam, his
version of this song is kinda sluggish, but that guitar solo is an
out-the-box monster)
"Hey Jude" - Wilson Pickett (Duane Allman always sounded better on other
people's records than with the Allman Brothers Band, just my opinion)
"Get Off Your Ass & Jam" - Funkadelic
"I'll Feel A Whole Lot Better" - Byrds
"Do Your Thing" - Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band
"Just Dropped In" - First Edition
"Billy's Blues, Part 2" - Billy Stewart (Bo Diddley, guitar)

There's probably some more I'm forgetting, but just the same, I'd better stop
it right here -- James

And 'blind leading the naked' is also good...the thing about the VFs to me
though is they were the beloved band of the popular kids in college in the
mid 80s...along with Talking Heads and R.E.M. -- two other bands to be
reckoned with. I can't quite get past that.

But Prince? Nahh.

Hi y'all,

Catching up on old digests.... I came across this...

On 19 Dec 2001, Jeroen on the subject: beat, bluf & branie boxset...,
answering Lee's question:
> so, anywhere to score a translation to the liners?<
wrote:
>>Obviously Jan should be your man here, but as far as I understand he's

Thanx for the confidence, Jeroen! Spotting Lee's original question brought
back an old plan, partly put into action already: translating all those
Op-Art 10" liners and make 'em available thru' Hitomi's web-site...
It IS DEFINITELY gonna happen! Patience tho', it IS a job... BB&B will be
there s well...

- -------------------------------------------------

On 21 Dec 2001 Lenny on the subject: Really Long Songs I Like, wrote
>>Why not? Me: "Sister Ray," and many of the stretched out live versions
of Velvets tunes as found on the 1969 Live lp, for instance, about a
zillion cuts by George Clinton/Bootsy
Collins/Parliament/Funkadelic/Parliament Funkadelic/P-Funk All-Stars etc
(there's another thread--bands with multiple names/configurations, LOL)
- --"Atomic Dog," "Double Uh-Oh," "Flashlight," "Knee Deep" and lots more,
"Funhouse" by the Stooges... Since Steppenwolf was my first favorite
group, I don't mind confessing to liking that suite thingy that comprises
most or all of side 2 of "The Second" lp... on the other hand, I love The
Yardbirds and, tho' they're dinosaurs, Led Zep, but I don't care if I EVER
hear "Dazed and Confused" again...<<

Confession time (?): when I started collecting albums, in the
mid-seventies, long songs were one of my fave items to look for (live
albums by the Allman Brothers, Ten Years After, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep and
Grand Funk Railroad being among my first and all-time faves... The
inclusion of a six-minute drum solo was an added bonus...). Imagine my
disappointment in Zep's "The song remains the same", which should have
consisted of sides 1 & 3 only... Anyone remember laughter...? LOL!!!
Over the years me and my music changed and these days my motto is
basically: at least 30 songs a disc, please! Although, occasionally, I
still have a lot of fun with those old long-song-discs.
One of my all-time fave-long-songs/jams (and now playing) has to be Sonny
Boy Williamson's "Little village", 12 minutes of false starts, dumb
producer's remarks and questions and Sonny Boy's attempts to pull off a
good song, swearing and cursing his way through that jam... Ab Fab!

- -------------------------------------------------

Also on 21 Dec 2001 Lenny once more, this time on whether or not to
"punish" your drunken kids, wrote:
>>You kidding? If the kid KNOWS ya saw them in that pathetic state, your
work is probably done--the kid's speculations on what the parent
thinks/will/might say will be far worse than anything you possibly COULD
say... Given that the kid's gonna squirm like hell ANYWAY, a knowing
silence is merely a small mercy. I still say that once, I might keep my
mouth shut--long as it's understood that I KNOW. The second time, I'd
pounce.<<

You're so right Len!

And... alright, late but forever relevant, IMO, my puke/sleep/silently
disgusted parents story:

One cold winter night I went out with a dozen of friends... I can't
remember why, but I had decided to get drunk like hell and to achieve that
I had bought myself a bottle of white rum... We went to a youth centre,
after drinking some beer at my place. At the youth centre I started boozing
on the rum, sometimes pure, sometimes mixed with coke. Coming out of there,
we decided to go to a friend's house, who's parents had gone out for the
night... Coming outside in the feezing cold didn't really do me good, but
we managed to get to the other side of town (on bike-back) anyway... Please
don't ask how... can't remember... Having arrived at my friend's place we
boozed on, but soon enough I had to go lose something... I found the
toilet, spilled my guts (no stains outside the pot, mind you!)... and
managed to fall asleep, on my knees, door nicely locked.... And then the
posh parents came home... Later I learned that it took about an hour to
wake me up and make me unlock the door... I also learned later, that a
friend, broken leg in a cask, helped carry me home, all across town...
Somehow I ended up in my own bed... Next day I found myself on the couch,
listening to my mother, saying not a lot (for a change...), asking me how
last night had been (as if she didn't know....). At some point I started to
wonder how I'd gotten home and where my bike was... Mom told me she had no
idea... That was quite an expensive bike and she just let me sizzle and
sweat over it for about an hour... It turned out another friend had
accompanied me and the cask, bringin' the bike... Yeah... friends... My
mom, a light sleeper anyway, must have helped me to bed, thanked the guys
for caring and hardly mentioned it to me afterwards... My dad never even
said anything about it until years later...
But the silence that day was shattering enough to make me decide to never
get that drunk again... unless I was with reliable friends, of course! But
I never passed out again... as far as I can remember, obviously... ;--)

So, Andre and other kid-owners: let them make that mistake once, usually
the hangover, combined with your "acting-like-nothing-ever-happened" should
be punishment enough! I remember very well what cheerful mom did to my
hung-over headache... all thru' Sunday!

More catching up L8er,
Jan.

PS. Reading on this morning I saw MopTop leave the building... FUCK!!!
That's like setting fire to the Library of Congress...
Still have some 30 digests to go, hope I see his return... If not: lucky
me! Only the Garage section of the LoC burned down, I still have the
Soul/R&B wing to visit thru' AJ... Your loss!
