I like Tom Jones, especially She's A Lady. But I have some video footage of
him in his early days, pre schlock camp era, and he was GREAT!! R&B that
bordered on garage with lots of energy and no slick production with an
orchestra. Anybody have records from this era that they recommend? The tape
was from Sounds of the 60's.

before -Green-, and the hardcore record-collecting music freaks like me who
knew that the band's first version of "Radio Free Europe" on Hib-Tone kicked
ass all over the -Murmur- rerecording on IRS, that "Wendell Gee" was only
released as a single in the UK, the band opened for the Gang of Four in 1981,

I'm with you. Except I was off REM long before "Green." "Document" did it
for me, I was outta there. But I still count "Murmur" among my favorite

Anyway, that's not why I'm writing this--I just wanted to point out that the
situation you describe was precisely the same with the B-52s a couple of
years earlier.

Geez when the LP came out, all of the other DJs at the college station gave
me a hard time over liking it (they all thought it sucked) Of course when
the band played at a local watering hole all of these nitwits suddenly
became the world's biggest Violent Femmes fans, trying to get back stage to
see the band and all! What a bunch of weenies!
I always felt the first Femmes album was a little reminiscent of "Rock N
Roll with the Modern Lovers", at least as far the minimal acoustic approach
goes. Of course only someone like Jonathan Richman would tackle subjects
like ice cream trucks and rock n roll leprechauns!

I got a four CD box set new for some ungodly price like $13.99 or something
and it's got him doing Vegas style versions of tons of top 40 hits good, bad,
and indifferent.
The man can definitely sing no matter what you put in front of him. He was
great on the House of Blues broadcast a couple of years back. Can't believe
he's 61 years old.

Andrea mentioned Englebert. I read somewhere that Please Release Me kept
Cream from having a #1 record. Can anybody back this up?

They're a great band, of course (my favorite for a time; I like Reckoning
the best), though Green was a huge letdown. "Driver 8" was the song that I
think sort of broke out for them. The cover bands picked up on it.

I think Document holds up surprisingly well.

Has anyone seen Eugene Chadbourne's book about the rock life? He interviews
some used record store clerks, one of whom says Monster is the most
"popular" used CD ever.

Which reminds me of another band (with Don Dixon connections): Fetchin'
Bones....if you haven't listenend to ther records in a while, DON'T.

Pretty sure you're right. I think his name was Jim. At least, that's what
my foggy memory tells me from a show they did in, I think, maybe early '88
at The Strip (a benefit to buy a PA for the place) w/The Optic Nerve and The
Secret Service, among others. I remember 'cuz he was the guy with the PA
being used for the night and he wanted to take it home to Harrisburg, PA
once they'd finished (which, 'cuz Strip shows always started VERY late, was
probably no earlier than 2 AM). This, of course, pissed off The Secret
Service who had yet to play, especially singer Wayne Manor, who had to be
physically restrained from punching the guy out. As a result, Wayne stormed
away, then threw some guy out of the way by the jukebox and put his fist
through it.

As to the rest of the band, the guys I knew at the time were Danny Sariano
and Mike Musmanno, both of whom had previously been in a band called The
Cool Italians. Danny & Mike used to drive in from Harrisburg to NYC and
Hoboken for Fleshtones shows back in the late 80s. One time before I really
knew the two of 'em, Mike Sinocchi asked if I'd put 'em up for the night.
Well, at the end of the night, I found one of the guys (Musmanno, I think,
though I'm not sure), but not the other. The two of us searched both
Maxwells *and* all around Hoboken for an hour and a half before giving up
and heading home. The next AM, he split back to find his pal. Well, he
couldn't. He went home to Harrisburg to find his buddy already there. How
had he gotten there? A $250 cab ride.

After The Misanthropes split, I saw Mike Musmanno a couple more times when
he played with a band called The Syn D'Cats who were trying to get a label
deal. They did a showcase at Shelter Studios in the West 30s. (The same
place, oddly enough, that the Bad Music Seminar was held in '88.) Their
sound was kinda Mick Taylor-era Stones, from what I remember. And one of
the guys was a founding member of, I believe, Poison, though he'd left
before they made it.

Holy Moly! I've been looking for Ressurrection Shuffle too! For ages!
I remember my grandma having a record with that song and for the past few
years whenever I see a Tom Jones record I check the track listing looking
for that song. Whew, what a relief! I was starting to think I imagined
that song. I'm sure I haven't heard it since I was about 8 years old. If
I remember correctly it had a pretty smokin' keyboard part....

Also, I love the way Tom Jones belts out "Chills and Fever".

Agree that he can really belt them out. Even some of the more honky tonk

I just remembered I made a whole mix of favorite guitar playing...but I
don't have it anymore. I recall it had Mick Collins, Marc Ribot (with Tom
Waits), James Burton (with Gram Parsons), and a bunch more. Oh well.

I do remember that the absolute bomb is the dual solo in "Engine, Engine
Number Nine" by Wilson Pickett. It's Philly sound guys, but I don't know
their names. I think one of them is Bobby Eli. If you crank the record up
at the very end you can hear the people in the control room cheering.

yeah Justine!!, "Chills and Fever" is my favorite as well; a genius Joe Meek production. The flip is also another rocker on the Tower label and only released in the states. There's a A#1 killer live version of C&F, backed by the Sounds Inc., that came out in Europe (I think France, I'd have to check to make sure).
I also dig "whatcha gonna do", all of his pre-hit stuff and even his early 70's stuff "She's a lady".

Anyone dig Herb Alpert? I doubt it.
I've been listening to a lot of Ray Baretto, Perez Prado, early Sergio Mendez etc... and somehow branched off into Herb Alpert and I have to admit to liking some of it. ha!!

Hey, Justina:

Nope, you're not imagining things. Remember listening to it real good.

Checked out the All-Music site. Resurrection Shuffle's on the album
"Somethin' 'Bout You Baby I Like." Not one of his hit album's I guess. The
song's also on the CD Tom Jones hits collections "Classic Tom Jones," "More
Great Hits from Tom Jones" and "Original Gold." All three of these are on
non-major labels. but listed as in print on Amazon.com. Guess I'll have to
get a TJ greatest hits album. Not likely to find the original album after
looking off and on for years.

Subject: RE: Why are music store "Guitar guys" such A-holes?

I'm always going into guitar shops to check out amps and guitars...I was
looking at an amp a couple months ago, and asked to try it out. The guy
working at the store asked what kinda guitar I had, and when I told him I
usually play an old Vox or Silvertone...and sometimes a crappy solid body
Gretch, he said he'd go get something with a similar sound to try with that
amp. He came back with a beat up old homemade guitar with a warped neck and
only one working pickup...and said that would be the only guitar they would
have that would sound anything like the ones I had at home. I expressed my
dissaproval, and ended up playing a new Fender through the amp.
Another time, I was trying out a decent used guitar at one of the
snobbier shops in town...one of the "Dudes" at the counter came over and
proceeded to show me how to do it right...noodleing away on some Van Halen
licks...I took the guitar back and started bashing out "All Kindsa
Girls"...and ended up breaking two strings(at the same time) about half way
through. The guy actually asked me to pay for the strings.
I'm not a great musician. Hell, I'm not even very good at all...but I
enjoy playing. I just can't believe the nerve of some of these try-hard
musicians who work in some of these shops.
Don't even get me started on the prices of equipment in some of these
stores...I looked at a Vox semi-Accoustic in a store the other day, with a
price tag of $3200!!! I asked to see it because I couldn't believe the
price, and as the chick hands it to me, she informs that it plays OK and
that the original bridge is missing. Great...you've got a guitar on your
wall that's overpriced by $2000, even if all the built in effects work.

Subject: Re: Bee Gees Question

I recently found a Bee Gees budget CD in a truckstop
called "Three Kisses Of Love" which contains I think
25 tracks of very-pre-disco tracks which sound like
they range from 1962-66. The aforementioned song,
which is very doo-woppish and "Spicks And Specks."
Overall the style ranges from doo-wop to Beatle-style
mid-'60s pop to the kind of pleasant harmony pop they
were known for around the time of "New York Mining
Disaster 1941," "To Love Somebody" and
"Massachusetts."

There are some rather surprising beat-style numbers
like "To Be Or Not To Be," "Claustrophobia," "You
Wouldn't Know," and "Can It Be I'm In Love With You."
The latter two songs sound a bit like Gerry & The
Pacemakers, while the first one is rather Stones-ish.
There's a very good version of "Everyday I Have To
Cry" which I think may have been a minor Aussie hit
for the group, and the disc ends with a version of
"Turn Around Look At Me" that still pales next to the
Vogues definitive take.

Obviously, the cover photo shows the disco-era Bee
Gees and there's little in the way of liner notes.
What do you expect for $7.99? Personally, I think
there could be a market for a CD of pre-fame Bee Gees
recordings. I really do. They are probably more
popular than they've been since the disco era ended.

The debut UK album "The Bee Gees 1st" isn't a bad
album either. Nothing from that album appears on the
budget CD.

Three that come to mind instantly:

"The American Ruse" by the MC 5 ("Watch my back,
Sonic!")

"Hold Me" by PJ Proby (by who?)

"Act Naturally" by Buck Ownens (Don Rich)

Dave

P.S. I will also admit to liking Tom Jones. I have a
video comp with Jones performing "What'd I Say" and
"Chills And Fever" on a show called "The Beat Room" in
1964, and both songs blow "It's Not Unusual" away. I
also like "Delilah" (great murder song), "I'll Never
Fall In Love Again" (written by skiffler Lonnie
Donegan, if you can believe it!) and his version of "I
Who Have Nothing." Of course "What's New Pussycat?" is
a singalong classic! You and your pussycat nose...

Most of my friends who work in music stores are actually pretty humble. They
don't play to show off, unless they're assisting some 'metal guitar-god
wanna-be with an attitude' who needs the wind knocked out of their sails.
Just wanted to add that.

No, not in the US or UK anyway. In the US "Release Me" peaked at #4. In
the UK it did hit #1 but Cream never even hit the Top Ten there.

Like I said earlier, mine are all white vinyl. I bought 'em right when
they
came out. So you're all probably right about subsequent pressings changing

to reg'lar old boring black PVC.

But mine definitely aren't promos. Got 'em new and sealed. In a record
store that wouldn't have even known how to go about re-selling used stuff.
Mike F.<

I got these when they first came out too, but I just rechecked and the
only volumes I have on white vinyl are 6,7, 11, 12 and 13. I agree with
Dr.Mindburger that maybe a certain number of each pressing were
on white wax.
For the last 3 volumes (11 thru 13) they changed the generic sleeve
design to look like a Wand company sleeve - orange stars (instead
of gold) and black stripes on a white background.
The last coupla Mindrocker volumes were particularly hard to acquire
- - at least in the UK; I ended up getting a German collector friend to find
them for me.

Does anybody know how hard this album is to find?
Possibly reissued?

Danny,
I used to see this around a lot in the UK. I don't think it's
been reissued.
You should be able to find it via a dealer-marketplace site like

Good one! Also dig Beck's solo on "Shapes of Things" and Beck/Page
"Stroll On", many other Beck solos. And whoever plays the gtr on
Commander Cody + Lost Planet Airmen's version of "Hot Rod Lincoln".
Jorma Kaukonen's solo on "Somebody to Love". And the guitar player's
solo on Freddie and the Forgone Conclusion's "(You're Just A" Waste Of
My Time". Not that the solo is fantastic-it's fine, but the fuzz sound on that
record is pure gold! A must for neo 45 collectors! All-round great record.
And Fang's solo (or the session guy who did it in the studio?) on "Just Like
Me". There's a few....

Radio Free Europe-R.E.M.
Sitting Still-R.E.M.

Right !, tho' havin' heard some of his "work" with Manowar, I think
it's save to say that he's heavily dependent on the right
surroundings.... Having seen the man play live for the first time
recently I was surprised at with how much pleasure and sheer joy
he still squeezes out all of his fretwork...

OK, here's some more personal stringbuster faves: Captain
Sensible, Chuck Berry, Steve Cropper, Roger McGuinn, Scotty
Moore, Hans Ostlund, Johnny Ramone, Tony Slug, Deniz Tek,
Johnny Thunders, Agnus Young, etc....
