Yeah I found it on LP for just $7.98, and I'm assuming
that Checker rereleased it cuz it still has the
Checker label on it.

Hi,
The "Electric Sax" that Eddie Harris played was in deed a "Vari-tone"
equipped Tenor Sax.The pickup was fed through the Vari-tone which added
harmonics to the original tone.He seemed to enjoy the "Octave" feature
quite a bit. ;)
Eddie also played "reed trumpet".Which was basically a Trumpet that had
a saxophone mouthpiece attached to it.In case you couldn't figure that
out.
The plastic sax that one poster mentioned was made by "Grafton".
Charlie Parker was also known to play these on occasion.
  Take care,
    Tony

Can we agree to disagree on this?. What was always missing in
these off-shoot bands were good singers, if such a band doesn't
have a Lee Brilleaux or Dave Tice it's not gonna be very good
IMHO, no matter the other members' previous credentials.

*** Sure we can! But again I gotta say that when Tice joined the Bishops I was majorly disappointed.
The Spencer stuff is far superior IMHO.
And I also really like Potter, Wilko and Stevie Lewin's voices! I wouldn't call the Senders and off-shoot band. Wilko was very committed to that project.
Oh well...
We do agree on Brilleaux.

As for the Tunders book; I thought there was a better story in there,
Antonia is too much of a fan to dig a bit further than the, for her
apparently, romantic image of the rock'n'roll loser.

*** Well, I thought she did the right thing. She furthered Johnny's tale w/o being judgemental in both Cold Blood and the Doll's book. I dunno how romantic she finds the whole thing really. I might suggest that like Perrett it's a complete waste of a promising life.

Don't start me talking,

** It's Too Late! ;o)

Ps: I DO however agree with you on the reggae stuff 100%.

*** Thankyouverymush....

Mid-late '80's there were a LOT of Chess re-issues on vinyl for $6.
I bought 'Bo Diddley', 'Go', 'Have Guitar, Will Travel' and 'Bo
Diddley In The Spotlight'. Still have them. Always will. I know the
first two were issued on CD as a two-on-one disc. I just stuck with
the vinyl on those, as they're short length and the reissued 12"
covers look nice.

Here's my list of common used records - not so much in the thrifts, but in
the used bins, usually cheap. Some of these selections are regional and
probably indigenous only to Chicago:
1) Shadows Of Knight "Shake" 7" (I see this one more than "Gloria")
2) Cryan Shames A SCRATCH IN THE SKY album
3) All three Buckinghams albums on Columbia
4) Most sixties Ramsey Lewis albums, but especially THE IN CROWD
5) Herb Alpert (he's everywhere, can't escape him)
6) Alvin Cash & the Crawlers "Twine Time" 7"
7) Robert Cray STRONG PERSUADER album
8) Vaughn Meader THE FIRST FAMILY album
9) Carole King TAPESTRY
10) Carly Simon NO SECRETS (no shit! best album cover of the seventies - sure
wish I liked her music so I'd have an excuse to buy this)
11) Paul Revere & the Raiders GREATEST HITS

Not quite as ubiquitous but getting there: 1970's lesbian folk music on the
Olivia label

 1) the Christmas LPs put out by Firestone in the '50s/'60s
 2) Tina Turner "Private Dancer"
 3) Herb Alpert "Whipped Cream and other delights"
 4) Men at Work "Cargo"
 5) Barbra Streisand- too many to pick a single one...they all have her
name in the title and her ugly mug on the cover
 6) Boz Skaggs - (the one with him on the park bench)
 7) Linda Ronstadt "Living in the USA"
 8) Hewey Lewis & the News "Sports"

There's no decent Wayne Cochran best-of in any format. This guy I know who
has compiled and annotated several reissues himself says that he tried, and
it was a logistical nightmare, since Cochran kept switching from label to
label (his last recording contract was thirty years ago with Epic).

Chess released a really good Cochran album back around '67 or '68, but
according to my annotator friend, MCA has no interest in reissuing it.

Alvin Cash, of "Twine Time" fame, could use a good compilation himself - his
sixties singles on Mar-V-Lus and Toddlin' Town are insane house-party soul
music at its best.

stuff has never come out on CD. i wonder if there some complicated legalities

It's been years since I lived in New Haven, but I've always found it sad
that the scene there was always just a tad too small to sustain the good
places for too long... Great things always seemed to happen for a while,
but never with any real staying power.

Really nice to see that Mark "Saucer" Mulcahy is still active there!!! Wow,
he goes back to the early 80's, when I lived there. Played in The Saucers
(with drummer Craig Bell, who was a former member of Rocket From the Tombs
with Stiv and the Ubu guys--Craig is the "Bell" listed in the writing
credits for "Sonic Reducer"), then went on to form Red Spot Productions,
promoting shows in a bunch of different venues. (Moe, I know you remember
all these guys--the early 80's scene there wasn't bad at all!). Anyway,
what was the band Mark was in in the late 80's called--I'm thinking Certain
Generals or something like that???

Oh yeah, another New Haven venue question you might be able to answer, ed--I
know MopTop would know; damn, wish he were here to help with this one...
There was a gay bar in New Haven on Crown Street (was it called Partners,
maybe?), one block up from York that turned into a pretty wild new wave/punk
club for a while. What name did it go by when they were doing the punk
thing?

So what will the demise of the Tune Inn leave for rockin' venues, ed? You
got much besides Toad's Place these days?

This I can't answer, but I was pretty amused to hear them doing the title
track/theme song for another (VERY dated) 60's flick, "A Guide for the
Married Man," with Walter Matthau and Bobby Morse--said guide, of course,
being the do's and don'ts of infidelity, as demonstrated by a very
impressive cast of celebs (Lucille Ball, Carl Reiner, Sid Ceasar, Terry
Thomas and a whole bunch more)...
