OK, here's a prediction for 2002 - these guys are gonna save Poptones and
create a LOT of media interest. They may not scale the heights of Oasis
but I can feel things stirring for this Swedish band. What I like about
the Hives is that there recent material sticks in the head and contains
memorable hooks. THINK: riff heavy garage punk rock monster tunes. In
Bompland terms, the Hives are good news indeed and I cannot wait for their
show at The Astoria on February 1st. For those yet to come across them,
then think of the Sonics and the MC5 fronted by P Zaremba! 8-)

and they're even better live - i saw them last year here in bergen, and it

Subject: Re:Tune Inn (New Haven)Mark M-Miracle Legion, Craig, Seth, Saucers

Hey Lenny !!! You're probably thinkin' of Mark's old band Miracle Legion.
Great band along the lines of Rem or Winter Hours ( neat indie college pop ,
we if wanna label it with something as an identifier ). Myself, I really
thought their best record was the first one, titled " The Backyard ", tho '
they made a few others after that, including a Christmas single that was
pretty neat. I'm not sure what led to the eventual end of Miracle Legion, but
I'm sure signing that deal with Morgan Creek, may have contributed some. I
thought they shoulda signed with Twin Tone or a similar indie that would at
least know who they were, and do something to promote them in some way, as I
was sure that Morgan Creek were really just lookin' to sign some bands to use
as tax write - offs if any of their movies went over budget and flopped ...
Mark was also in an earlier band with Craig Bell, Seth Tiven and Catherine
Cormack called the Saucers who made an exceptionally great single " A Certain
Kind of Shy " back in 1980. One of my fave gigs was a Christmas show at the
Grotto where I did a couple songs with Mark and Wolfie and the drummer from
Valley of Kings. We did " Certain Kind of Shy " and another song, ( no
rehearsals - just learn it at home and show up ) but all I remember was Mark
getting all ecstatic during " Certain Kind of Shy ", he even put the mic up
to my guitar during the guitar breaks n' solo cuz I used the Rick 12 and
played " country style ", which he really dug, definately a neat gig !!!
Craig Bell and his wife Claudia ( great people ) had a band after the
Saucers called The Bell System, they were really good too, somewhat like the
Velvets, with one of my store's employees Michael on drums ( now there's a
guy that looks like Peter Buck ) and another guy on guitar (can't remember
his name tho', sorry ) that did a lotta gigs with The Not Quite.
Seth Tiven, of course put together Dumptruck, who were just amazing, made
some wonderful albums, and unfortunately didn't get the kind of recognition
(beyond critical ) that they really deserved either, which was a shame.
Sorry to hear that CT is losing the Tune Inn, cause I don't think there is
much else other than Toads left up there, where they would rather book / have
" Dance Parties " , because unfortunate as it sounds, they actually make more
$$$ with those idiot dance parties, than they do with most live band shows.
Well time to get some snooze ... maureen

Really nice to see that Mark "Saucer" Mulcahy is still active there!!! Wow,
he goes back to the early 80's, when I lived there. Played in The Saucers
(with drummer Craig Bell, who was a former member of Rocket From the Tombs
with Stiv and the Ubu guys--Craig is the "Bell" listed in the writing
credits for "Sonic Reducer"), then went on to form Red Spot Productions,
promoting shows in a bunch of different venues. (Moe, I know you remember
all these guys--the early 80's scene there wasn't bad at all!). Anyway,
what was the band Mark was in in the late 80's called--I'm thinking Certain
Generals or something like that???

Oh yeah, another New Haven venue question you might be able to answer, ed--I
know MopTop would know; damn, wish he were here to help with this one...
There was a gay bar in New Haven on Crown Street (was it called Partners,
maybe?), one block up from York that turned into a pretty wild new wave/punk
club for a while. What name did it go by when they were doing the punk
thing?

So what will the demise of the Tune Inn leave for rockin' venues, ed? You
got much besides Toad's Place these days?

Bingo!!! Thanks, Moreen, I knew you'd know! Yep, I remember the Saucers
well--Catherine Saucer went on to book Toad's Place (wonder if she had
anything to do with the club hiring the great Jamie Methwreck from the
Poodle Boys--don't remember quite what his job was, unless it was just
overall upkeep, lights and such)... Catherine's father taught at Yale, I
remember... Craig Bell released the first vinyl comp of the area's punk era
bands--I forget the name of the album, but it featured The Saucers, The
Poodle Boys, The Furors--loved them as a two piece, they were disappointing
as a three piece; the bass player just wasn't quite up to it at the
time--and a bunch of the others (The Disturbance must've been on it... For
awhile, Tom, the bass player from The Disturbance went on to book
Nightengale's in NYC; don't know as he ever ended up in any other bands,
though--I know he published a fanzine for awhile; do you remember what it
was, Moreen?).

Aside from Mark Mulcahey, the only person from those early 80's days that I
know of that's still playing is Roger C. Reale, oddly enough--someone
mentioned a recent gig of his here on this list not too long ago. Are any
of the Double Naught Spies playing? I keep expecting Danny to do
something...

What ever happened to the AdX, a very punk band fronted by that guy Zippy,
the guy with the HUGELY tall spiked Mohawk? I remember, he looked punk as
hell, but he was pretty meek when ya talked to him... wanted to become a
hairdresser!

Also, what was the name of the guy who was the leader of the TV Neats? (I'm
thinking Tom something, but could be wrong). He was a good songwriter; very
pop sensibility. Hope he's still playing somewhere...

What with all of them, The Not Quite and even, I'll presumptiously add, my
own bands, there was actually a pretty decent scene there, very early on,
plus a lot of "run-off" of big name shows by people warming up for/just
coming from NYC.

I know Danny Ly was on this list, tho' I'm not sure if he's still here.
(Danny?)

He played w/the Botswanas for a long time and has been in The Senders for
awhile now, tho' they rarely play these days. Unfortunately, I found out
about their August gig after the fact. Too bad, too, 'cuz they were doing
an evening show at Tobacco Road up on 41st and I could've easily made it up
there after that great Greenhornes/Mooney Suzuki/White Stripes show on the
Pier.

I've been listening to a couple of Senders' tracks lately and realizing how
much I miss seeing those guys. What a band!

I always thought that the wearing of the Iron Cross (in the USA in the
post-WW2 period) was started by guys that came back from fighting in
Europe, many of whom were disaffected and unemployed (unemployable?) and
became bikers/hell's angels. Wearing the Cross that they'd taken from a
dead German soldier was a way of displaying how tough they are, that they'd
been to war and killed the enemy. The surfer kids a decade or more later
just figured it looked cool and copied them, not really understanding fully
where the Cross had come from. Fact or fiction? - PJ

After posting this, I realised that the song is actually the first track on

1) Not to be technical, but the BLACK GLADIATOR is from the 70's (actually
1970), but its still worth it! It sounds like he's being backed up by Black
Merda (essentially Chess Records' answer to Funkadelic) and the whole shebang
does have this "black psychedelia" aura to it. It is a great album, but I've
only seen it on vinyl.

2) It's strange that none of the original albums are in print...I remember
that Chess actually did reissue HAVE GUITAR WILL TRAVEL, BO DIDDLEY IS A
GUNSLINGER, and IN THE SPOTLIGHT back in the eighties (on vinyl), but
apparently those have been abandoned now.

Two questions which I doubt anybody here would know the answer to, but if you
do, I'd be pleasantly surprised:

1) That customized scooter that Bo Diddley is riding on the cover - I wonder
who has it now? And more to the point...

2) Where was the cover shot taken? Chicago, or elsewhere? Always did wonder
about the location, and none of the businesses spotted in the background are

Up through at least 1970, Chess always had killer LP covers, but the most

from the OC list:

A quick look at John Litweiler's Harmolodic Life shows (p.31) that
Ornette
bought the white plastic alto in 1954 when he couldn't afford a standard
metal horn. The price of the plastic alto was about that of a used
Selmer.
Charlie Parker had played on one at Massey Hall the year before, but it
was
still considered strange. I don't remember when he stopped playing the
plastic alto; certainly he was still playing it in photos from the '60
Monterrey Jazz Festival. I believe he switched when it was no longer
possible to buy one--probably late sixties...

And on not being able to buy one any more, there's a great history of
the Grafton plastic sax here:

I would to, even though I've got several of his
singles on both labels. The man had some really wild
records.

Am I correct in thinking that the 1973 Atlantic release "Doug Sahm &
Band" hasn't been re-issued either? Some of the cuts are on a "Best of"
CD, but some of the better moments don't seem to have been made readily
available again. Great record!

Yeah, the Noah album! I've still got a cassette that I taped off a friend's
8-track of this in 1981, and the worst part is how the 8-track fade-out
track switch (ka-chunk) comes in the middle of the psychedelic "Cat" song.
I've been able to find a guy who made me CD-Rs of "New Morning" and "Back in
'72," the other ones that have NEVER been on CD, but I'm still existing on
that 20-year-old "Noah" cassette!

Help!

I'll have to give my vote to Electric Mud and Howlin' Wolf's New Album.

MoB decided to get together to play a couple shows in Boston and NYC. The
NYC gigs are this Saturday and Sunday (1/12 & 13/2002) at Irving Plaza.

Haha, LOL! Though I'm not sure why they've chosen now, there are at
least 5 shows with a re-formed MoB in the next several months...Saturday
and Sunday in NYC, two shows the weekend thereafter in Boston, and then
mid-spring in Europe at at the All Tomorrow's Parties fest "curated" by
Shellac...

I haven't looked in a while, but there should be recent info at

I'm not sure about this, but I remember hearing that the Noah album was removed
from the market at Seger's request as Capitol slapped it together from the Noah
single and out-takes, so I doubt it will ever come out on CD.

Lenny sez:

<< I was pretty amused to hear [The Turtles] doing the title track/theme song
for another (VERY dated) 60's flick, "A Guide for the Married Man," with
Walter Matthau and Bobby Morse--said guide, of course, being the do's and
don'ts of infidelity, as demonstrated by a very impressive cast of celebs
(Lucille Ball, Carl Reiner, Sid Ceasar, Terry-Thomas and a whole bunch
more)... >>

That was one of those mid-60s films that was pure Borscht-Belt trying to seem
hip and hap'nin. I was 13 years old when it first came out, and it seemed
campy to me THEN.

As for the song, it's a great song though. It's the second track on the
"Happy Together" LP, which was and is a cracking album. The Turtles were NOT
just a singles band. There's some great stuff on there.....some truly wacky
stuff like "The Walking Song" which could never have been achieved by a
forgettable pop band, and is way too intricate to be thought of as LP Filler.
"Happy Together" is definitely their best LP.

I seem to recall the album being released at least a few weeks before the
film came out. Maybe even longer. There was no mention on the jacket or the
label of the song being "from the film", which is something they ALWAYS did
back then.

Dang. Well, that might explain why it's so danged hard to find copies of the
record in the lovely used record shops of our fair land--and why said copies
usually go for $60 or more on eBay. Dang. Double dang. It's maybe my
favorite of Seger's good (that is--early) albums!
