Yeah, that makes perfect sense. Hell, they may have been wearing the crosses their fathers had retrieved! But if Jan would let me restate my earlier point, the Iron Cross was a German military medal of honor (bravery) that in and of itself was not directly related to the Third Reich (it dates back over a hundred years prior to that), nor was it the emblem of the Third Reich. Yes, it was still awarded by Hitler's army during WWII, but those crosses included the swastika in the center. I've not seen anyone that I know of wearing the Iron Cross with the swastika center (which would, IMHO, be in bad taste). Not saying those bikers or '60s surfers didn't... just saying that none of the patches or necklace pendants (etc.) I own or have come across contain it. And hey, if people can only equate the sight of the Iron Cross with Hitler's Germany then that's not my fault. Remember, the Bundeswehr (Germany's modern armed forces) still incorporates the Iron Cross into one of its modern medals. 'Nuff said.

Several idle thoughts:
1. I'm still playing with the Botswanas and Senders, albeit infrequently and
irregularly because of distance and the onset of middle age. The Botswanas'
album "Fade and You're Gone" will FINALLY be out (after 2 1/2 years) in early
February; we're getting some favorable press coverage (articles in GQ and
Guitar Player magazines, as well as Alternative Press, Details and Jersey
Beat) and the disc is going out to a few hundred radio stations in a few
weeks. The Senders have done nothing since the summer shows Blair was talking
about, but the last one we did was a real corker, with Wayne Kramer from the
MC-5 jumping up with us at Manitoba's in NYC to rip off some blazing guitar
on our version of the Stones' "Empty Heart."
2. Waxing nostalgic here reading all the posts about the New Haven scene from
the 80s, specifically from the days at the Grotto nightclub. It's too bad
that the scene petered out. We were young, full of ourselves and naive enough
to think we could sustain something for more than a few years. I was friendly
with many of those bands Lenny Smith mentioned (I bought my first practice
bass amp from Craig Bell of Saucers and I still own the Poodle Boys' Kustom
bass amp, which I bought from Craig's wife Claudia.)
3. A few hellos on the list to: Moreen, whose Rhymes Records store I used to
frequent; Lenny, who always welcomed us (the Double-Naught Spys) warmly
whenever we played Portland, Me., which we often called our second home
because of our inability to get any good home-town shows in New Haven; and
Eric Planck (how's your brother Rodi doing?); Blair; and Eric Fusco.
4. I'm sorry to read through those flaming posts of a few weeks ago when
MopTop Mike unsubscribed. I don't want to comment on the specifics, but all I
will say is that he was my bandmate in the Spys for eight years and my friend
for the past 14 years and I will go to the wall to defend him (which I did
physically at few of our more unruly shows).
5. Blair asked about the unreleased Spys album on Crypt from 1988. We
recorded it during the drunken weekend of the Bad Musick Seminar in NYC, with
production provided by an equally drunken Billy Childish. I don't remember
too much why it was aborted, other than to speculate that Tim Warren was
bummed out about the Rat Bastards breaking up or he just flat-out didn't like
it very much. I haven't heard the tapes in years. MopTop has the masters, one
track of which, "One More Beer," made it onto the Nardwuar compilation "Oh
God, My Mom's on Channel 10" in 1990.

Sorry about the extended length of this post, but it's nice to know someone
is curious about me.

yeah...Black Gladiator rips, but it wasn't really what I was getting at.
You can find sealed 80's versions of that and "Big Bad Bo" all over the
place (which is what I suspect Jason bought) but good luck finding "Bo
Diddley is A Lover" or "Bo Diddley's Beach Party" anywhere for under
$30.

MCA owns the rights to all the Chess/Checker stuff, but all they do is
re-release greatest hits comps with different covers every year. I
suspect the weird ones ("Surfin' With Bo Diddley" anyone?) are lost
forever, tho. There doesn't seem to be as big a market for reissues
like that when the company holding the masters is also responsible for
pushing Blink 182 and shit. Ech...

I found a Charly LP from the 80's of "Have Guitar Will Travel"...did
they do LP versions of all the other albums? I've never seen one for
sale, but if I ever get my hands on one of those Charly CD box sets with
everything I'll snatch it up. Anybody got one for sale? I have most
everything from the 60's but that box is a handy little deal I'd like to
own.

All records by one of the greatest instro groups of all time, and one of the very first rock groups in Spain, Los Relampagos. These guys were at least as good as the Shadows, Ventures, and other top instro groups of the '60s.

Another in favor of an Alvin Cash comp.

This would be a great time to put out an Alvin Cash compilation - you could probably get some airplay on his "Ali Shuffle" singles while the ALI movie is in the theaters, or when it comes out on DVD/video.

How did Norton manage to put together their R&B comps on people like the Mighty Hannibal and Rudy Ray Moore, who recorded on many labels, some of them owned by the majors these days? They'd be perfect to put out an A.C. comp. Too bad he's not around to promote it.

Alvin Cash, of "Twine Time" fame, could use a good compilation himself - his sixties singles on Mar-V-Lus and Toddlin' Town are insane house-party soul music at its best.

    ok, here's a new one (i think) -
it's a regular day at work, which means i am sitting there, trying to
look busy as i read the bomp list and listen to CDs.... today i listened to
the gold disc of "surrealistic pillow," one of those cool reissues with both
the mono and stereo LP mixes; listened to both versions and actually came to
the rare (for me) conclusion that the stereo mix kicks the mono's ass...the
mono mix just sounds kinda sludgy and goopy, while the stereo has air in it,
and the air works with this particular record - IMO, anyway...
i could only think of one other record i think sounds better in stereo -
the beatles' "a hard day's night."
can anybody else think of a record where they like the stereo mix better
than the mono?

Rob, I can probably think of hundreds, but one that came to mind when you
wrote this was the Who's "Sell Out". To me, hearing "Armenia City In The
Sky" in mono, without the stereo-panning, well, it's just not the same. I have
both, and have A&B'd them to see the differences (actually, the track listing
is completely different too), and I think I prefer the "original" release...

Either we ridicule Bernard Purdie for thinking anyone would fall for such an
absurd story, or we give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's
somewhat confused.

I guess I should explain what I'm ridiculing Purdie for. His story is that
after The Beatles recorded their songs with Ringo, Brian Epstein decided
that the drumming wasn't good enough, so he sent the tapes to NYC so Purdie
could replace the drumming on them. According to him, he played on 18 songs,
and Ringo never played drums on a Beatles record. I could point out all the
holes in that story, but why should I have all the fun.

What actually happened is that after The Beatles broke in America, the
company that reissued the recording of "Ain't She Sweet" (with Pete Best on
drums) had Purdie overdub some fills.

What really happened is that

I've got a Japanese copy of Bradley's Barn, but haven't been able to find
anyone selling the German CDs. Any ideas about an online site I should
check??

Cyril Jordan Interview - Flamin' Groovies Monthly Book no.1 (7/76)
- ------------------------------------------------------------------

Q: How long have you been playing guitar?

A: Since 1963. I actually started in '62, but gave it up 'cause there
wasn't any real guitar rock & roll happening. Then the Beach Boys hit the
charts and I flipped. Got back into teaching myself. I'd play a 45 for
hours and hours until my chops were right. LPs are easier to learn from.
When 33 1/3 is slowed down to 16, the song stays in the same key. Makes
learning Lonnie Mack riffs seem easy. When the Beatles and Stones came
out, I switched to bass guitar. Studied bass for a year then went back to
6-string guitar.

Q: What kind of guitars do you own?

A: All kinds -- 2 Rickenbackers (one 12, one 6), Dan Armstrong, 3 Gretsch
guitars, Country Gentleman, Anniversary, 12-string, and a Hofner bass.
Also have an electric autoharp and a dulcimer.

Q: What kind of amps do you use, and why?

A: Used Marshalls for awhile. In the old days, when the Groovies first
started, we all had Vox Superbeatles. Now we use Fender dual Showmans
(pre-CBS, 1966). The Fender sound is part of the best years of rock &
roll. 1962-68--Byrds, Beach Boys, Stones, Raiders, they all used Fender.
They're perfect for Rickenbacker or Gretsch guitars.

Q: What other guitarists have influenced you?

A: That's a long list. When I started, it was Berry, then Lonnie Mack,
Harrison, Jones and Richard, Dave Davies (or is that Jimmy Page?), Jim
McGuinn, Al Casey, James Burton, Dave Edmunds, Robin James and Mike
Wilhelm. Oh yeah, can't forget Frankie Lee Sims.

Q: What are some of your favorite records?

A: That's a hard one; it changes all the time. Lately I've been playing a
lot of Byrds records. All time favorites include 'She Loves You', 'Please
Please Me', 'Not Fade Away', 'You Really Got Me', '5D', Johnny Was A Good
Boy', 'I Want To Hold Your Hand', 'I Wonder' by the Ronettes...boy, this
list could go on and on. Fave LPs: Meet the Beatles, Meet the Stones, Meet
the Kinks, Meet the Yardbirds, Meet the Byrds, Meet the Lovin' Spoonful...

Q: We understand you have a pretty choice record collection...tell us a
little about it.

A: My collection isn't really as large as some collectors. About 900
singles right now. But I'm totally crazed about every one of them. I've
just almost completed my Kinks collection. Now if I could only find 'You
Still Want Me' on Cameo. I come across classics all the time that never
made it on the charts. Ever hear 'The Joint's Really Jumpin'?

Q: What other hobbies do you have?

A: I collect comic art. I'm into magic--was a professional when I was 10.
Had my own show. My name was Mahatma Keeps Bey. I'm crazed over E.C.
comics. Just started painting again. I also like reading horror stories
late at night.

Q: What ambitions do you have outside of music?

A: To make science fiction and horror films. Cartoons--I'd like to get
into art direction, special effects. Wouldn't mind being an archaeologist
and go digging for lost cities.

Q: What writers/filmmakers/artists are you into?

A: Colin Wilson, all his stuff is incredible. H.P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton
Smith, Derleth, William Hope Hodgson. My film idols are George Pal, Ray
Harryhausen, Edward Small, Orson Welles. My biggest influences as an
artist would be Frank Kelly Freas, Dali, Carl Barks, Richard Taylor, Bill
Elder.

Someone else posted this same info earlier today, but I guess some folks
missed it. I got it from a friend of Irwin Chusid's so I guess that is as
official as I need it to be.

Subject: Juan Garcia Esquivel (1918-2002)

JUAN GARCIA ESQUIVEL (1918-2002)

Juan Garcia Esquivel, celebrated pianist, composer, bandleader, stereo
recording pioneer, and glamorous Space Age Bachelor Pad Music icon, died at
his home in Jiutepec, Morelos, Mexico, on January 3, 2002. He was 83.

The death was reported by his widow, Carina Osorio vda. de Garcia, and by
his son, Mario Eddi Garcia Servin, of Taxco. According to a longtime friend,
Steve Reed, of Los Angeles, three months ago Esquivel suffered a stroke,
which had left him paralyzed on one side and unable to speak. He recovered
in a short time, but suffered a second, more severe stroke on Dec. 30. He
died four days later.

Esquivel was born on January 20, 1918, in Tampico, Tamaulipas, Mexico. He
was a renowned pianist/bandleader in his native country, garnering much
acclaim on stage, television and radio. He starred in and scored two films,
"Cabaret Tragico" and "La Locura de Rock'n'Roll," before being brought to
the U.S. by RCA Victor Records in 1957. Working primarily in Hollywood, New
York, and Las Vegas, the suave maestro recorded prolifically, led an
explosive big band, and scored for several TV programs. His elegant,
idiosyncratic, and very meticulous arrangements were colored by radical
dynamic shifts, playful percussion, wordless vocals, and Esquivel's own
virtuoso keyboard runs. When it came to recording sessions, he was notorious
for budget-busting extravagance. His offstage life was filled with celebrity
hobnobbing (e.g., Sinatra, Liberace, Ernie Kovacs), romantic intrigue (he
embodied the charming Latin Lothario mystique), and unfortunate bouts of
drinking and prescription drug abuse that eventually curtailed his success.

Many of Esquivel's saucy compositions, such as "Mucha Muchacha,"
"Whatchamacallit," "Latin-Esque," and "Mini Skirt," have come to symbolize
the wild hyper-stereo orchestration of the 1950s and '60s. Ironically, his
most familiar composition -- and one for which he is little known -- is the
"Universal Emblem," a three-second blast of Wagnerian thunder which has for
decades accompanied the Universal Studios logo at the conclusion of hundreds
of television programs.

"Space Age Bachelor Pad Music," a 1994 Bar/None Records compilation of
Esquivel's 1950s-'60s RCA Victor recordings, sparked a resurgence of
interest in his work. Simpsons creator Matt Groening declared Esquivel "the
great unsung genius of space age pop." Subsequent releases, such as "Music
>From a Sparkling Planet" (1995, Bar/None), "Cabaret Maņana" (1996, BMG),
and
the 40-years-locked-in-the-can "See It In Sound" (1999, 7N), launched his
vintage recordings into wide circulation on TV, in films and commercials,
and as background music in restaurants, lounges, and stores. Several of his
compositions have been used in the soundtracks of major Hollywood films,
including "The Big Lebowski," "Four Rooms," and "Beavis and Butt-Head Do
America." His riffs have been widely sampled and emulated by audio
mixologists and turntable wizards worldwide.

The Kronos Quartet recently commissioned and performed a string arrangement
of Esquivel's 1967 composition "Mini Skirt." The original handwritten scores
for his 24-piece orchestra no longer exist, having reportedly been hauled
away as trash years ago when rent was in arrears on a Las Vegas storage
facility.

Though he was an American citizen, Esquivel moved back to Mexico in the
1980s. For the Televisa network, he composed soundtracks for a children's TV
program, entitled "Burbujas" ("Bubbles"). He was inactive in the music
business during the 1990s, due to a broken hip and an aggravated spinal
injury which left him bedridden and unable to walk. He lived at the home of
his older brother, Sergio, in Jiutepec, until Sergio's death in 1999.
Esquivel then bought and moved to a home in Villas del Descanso, also in
Jiutepec.

In May 2001, Esquivel married 25-year-old Carina Osorio, who had assisted
the ailing legend as a home health care aide for several years. They were
wed in a simple ceremony administered by a justice of the peace at
Esquivel's home. Esquivel claimed that Carina was his sixth wife. He had
married and divorced twice while residing in the United States. He described
Carina as "a simple girl, who is attentive and honest," adding, "I am very
happy, and she is too. We both stay up until 2:00 in the morning, and she
helps me. Our house is not too big, not too small. Just for the two of us,
it is nice. It has a nice garden."

A film biography about the Space Age Pop avatar is in script development at
Fox studios, with John Leguizamo slated to star and Alexander Payne signed
to direct.

Per his wishes, Esquivel's remains were cremated, and his ashes were
returned home with Carina.
