Not exactly garage, but Jimmy Scott's fabulous 'Falling in Love is
Wonderful' is not liable to ever be reissued. Even at the time of its
release, it was withdrawn since Jimmy was apparently still under contract to
someone else. Sad, too because it is a great lp. Truly one of my luckiest
finds of the past year. Our local 'overprice it if it's vinyl' store got a
copy and put it out for a mere $8!! This is the same clueless guy who put
the import reissue of Stack O Tracks at $125, saying it was even RARER than
the original since it was an import. He'd also put out a pirate copy of the
Beatles' Xmas LP at $200. I tried to tell him it was a bootleg, but he
wouldn't believe me. Some poor soul bought it, too, as a birthday present
for her boyfriend believing it to be original. Talk about criminals!!

Well, here's 3 threads tied together in one mighty post!!! Unquestionably
one of the masterworks of the Hi-Fi / Stereo era is Esquivel's
"Latin-esque". One of THE essential stereo effects records and part of
RCA's wacky "Stereo Action" series ("the sound the eyes can follow") Though
I've seen mono copies of this one, it's hard to understand how anybody could
settle for anything LESS than stereo!! This is the famous recording made by
2 orchestras in 2 separate studios with Esquivel conduction both
simultaneously via TV camera!!! It was slated to be reissued by Bar None as
part of their exhaustive effort to reissue the big E's complete recordings,
but when the record company went bankrupt, the reissue was scrapped. I'm
currently listening to "Estrellita" in his memory. What a record!!! HEY,
BMG!! WAKE UP AND RUSH THIS ONE OUT PRONTO!!!

OK, I know you didn't like the Hard-Ons too much, but that New Christs
single was pretty goddamn cool, especially "On Top Of Me".
I still think Younger's singing in recent years was miles above his work
with Birdman. Of course I wish the NC had put out a more substantial
farewell release, but I guess this will have to do until they get back
together or his new band Nanker Phelge gets in the studio...

Maybe not as good as their first, but it's a good vein to mine (a modern
mod/rock sound?), and there's at least one absolute killer: "Seconds".

Along the same lines (punky new wave) I gotta give props to The Epoxies and
their fantastic 7" EP on Dirtnap Records. Three great tunes, including a
cover of Adam & the Ants' "Beat My Guest."

My latest bargain-bin CD find: 'Underground 4 Play' on Buddah
featuring Flaming Groovies, Ducks Deluxe, Captain Beefheart, and
Elephant's Memory; three tracks each. Studio cuts from the original
releases. It was put out in '96. The notes say this grouping
represents an actual lineup at a Fillmore East show. Anyone know
about this 4Play series?

The Ozone. It was under different ownership. Didn't last long, maybe
a year. Then Fernando Pinto, who runs the soon to be closed Tune Inn,
had The Moon on Whalley Avenue for a couple years. Late 80's--92.
Then opened Tune Inn in late 92.

Toad's is it. Moreen was right on about the stupid dance party nights
(sponsored by your fave classic rock and teeny-bopper hit radio
stations), BUT--I did see Iggy there, as well as Rollins Band and
Living Colour this year. But, as far as homegrown sounds, there's
Cafe 9, primarily known for blues, r & b, and rock does sometimes
book local bands that are a bit different, but its not the same vibe
as The Tune Inn, Grotto, Ron's, etc. Those days are over I'm afraid.
In a nutshell, The Tune Inn is a victim of an attempt at
gentrification New Haven style. There's been tons of dance clubs that
have come and gone, yet that is what New Haven nightlife has become.
I couldn't remember some of those names, unlike the aforementioned
venues that exist only in the spirit world known as memory.

Here are a few subjective recommendations you might wanna check out if
you're also into the VU, Stooges, Pink Fairies, Funkadelic, Simply Saucer,
etc.:

Amon Düül 1 - Psychedelic Underground (beautiful and trancey with heavy
spots)
Amon Düül 1 - Para Dieswärts Düül (sweet and somewhat VU-sounding)
Ash Ra Tempel - Ash Ra Tempel
(http://perso.wanadoo.fr/crawdaddy.simon/crawdaddy.simon/Ashratemple.htm)
Cosmic Jokers - Cosmic Jokers (spacey with a funky spot)
Guru Guru - UFO (killer! somewhat Stooges-sounding)
Tangerine Dream - Electronic Meditation (great! before the snooze hit)

Also, a mandatory read would be Julian Cope's "Kraurocksampler".

Cool, the best reggae I've ever heard was the album "Heart Of The Congos",
by the Congos.

More good ones: toasters like Dr. Alimantado and Clint Eastwood, or U-Roy
and Big Youth on Virgin, the Abyssinians and Ijahman (for that real sweet
mystic sound), the Ethiopians (hop on the train to Skaville!), early Third
World and Steel Pulse (it's a punky reggae party), Jacob Miller and Ken
Boothe (real soulmen), Keith Hudson (a genius producer on two tracks), etc.

yeah, but as you may recall, that was originally advertised as the b-side

SURFIN'...well, half or most of that album (a) isn't Bo Diddley (it's Billy
Lee Riley) and (b) isn't that good, anyway. And as you will note in my
original post, MCA DID reissue some of Bo's original LP's...in the eighties.
Long gone now. BIG BAD BO and BLACK GLADIATOR are more recent vinyl reissues.

But you're right...even more than his labelmate, Chuck Berry, Bo really was
able to come up with some new, odd shit every now and then. The fact that
Chess won't release anything past his greatest hits is lamentable.

(Wait a minute, for a minute there in the eighties there was a RARE & WELL
DONE CD, but that disappeared too.)

Too bad he's not around to promote it.

I asked Miriam that same question - she said she'd do it in a heartbeat, if
she knew who owned the masters to One-Derful records these days. Maybe this
compilation could include some of his later stuff, like the nineties-vintage
"Your Feet Stink."

Saw P. Markmann's list, thought I'd come up w/my own:

"Outside Chance" (can't beat this one with a stick)
"Happy Together"
"Who Would Ever Think That I Would Marry Margaret" (their final single, from
'70 - not as corny as the verbose title indicates)
"Let Me Be"
"The Last Thing I Remember"

I could come up with five more, but I'll hold it right there...

<< Essential Turtles:

 1. Almost There (Kinks-style punker covered by several US 60s garage bands)
 2. Outside Chance (Byrds-meets-Stones killer; redone by Chesterfield Kings)
 3. Grim Reaper of Love (cryptic punk in waltz time!)
 4. Surfer Dan (a late-entry surf classic)
 5. She'll Come Back (moody brilliance with a monster riff; listen to the
lyrics - the girl is dead and the guy is nuts...) >>

No, I meant to say "Almost There!" That's the song that burns down the
cornfield!! Although "Outside" isn't bad in and of itself...
