Bingo!!! Thanks, Moreen, I knew you'd know! Yep, I remember the Saucers
well--Catherine Saucer went on to book Toad's Place (wonder if she had
anything to do with the club hiring the great Jamie Methwreck from the
Poodle Boys--don't remember quite what his job was, unless it was just
overall upkeep, lights and such)... Catherine's father taught at Yale, I
remember... Craig Bell released the first vinyl comp of the area's punk era
bands--I forget the name of the album, but it featured The Saucers, The
Poodle Boys, The Furors--loved them as a two piece, they were disappointing
as a three piece; the bass player just wasn't quite up to it at the
time--and a bunch of the others (The Disturbance must've been on it... For
awhile, Tom, the bass player from The Disturbance went on to book
Nightengale's in NYC; don't know as he ever ended up in any other bands,
though--I know he published a fanzine for awhile; do you remember what it
was, Moreen?).

Hey Lenny !!! That was " It Happened But Nobody Noticed " on Gustav Records
in '82. Lotsa ( TV Neats ) stuff on it such as the aforementioned TV Neats (
Mike Priggen was considered the leader if I remember right ), Furors ( great
as a 2 piece, I agree the 3 man lineup just didnt have the feel of the 2 guys
), Bats, Poodle Boys, October Days, International Q ( when I was in the
Modern Look we did a ton of gigs with those guys, I even have one live tape
of IQ and me doin' " The Munsters - Theme " from some club, most likely
Cellblock 11 ) Scout House, and some others, and yet no Disturbance, and I've
forgotten the name of Tom's fanzine somehow. Definately a pretty neat comp,
tho' I would have chosen " A Certain Kinda Shy " to represent the Saucers
over " Muckraker ".
Along with Roger C Reale, I think The Reducers are still playin' as well.
Now the Reducers were an amazing band, never saw 'em play a bad gig !!! Golly
what happened to the folks from The Shapes or DaWillows, Baby Strange,
Aluminum Cookies ( Eddie had a great band there ), Dead Fabulous, Toes ???
And it was a good area to be in back then, as local bands did get a lotta
great opening shots with major label acts and well known indie bands as well,
as then (and now ) and back in the 60's, CT was usually the gig bands did
between their NY and Boston shows. Great era for sure, not likely to happen
again, for lotsa reasons, including (in the case of New Haven ) as Ed mentions
in his post, greedy landlords ... like Yale University in particular, who are
the largest property holder in the town, and yet pay no property taxes ...
when they bought the building Rhymes was in ( last building they didnt
already own in that area ) they tripled the rent, hoping to get me to leave (
one more reason I did ) so they could convert the upstairs to condos fer the
well heeled young uprising executive types, they wanted to encourage to move
into the area, as Ed said.
Oh well ... time to put away the rose colored shades n' hit the hay ...

It's from a Swedish lp from the early 80s. Doug did three (I think) albums
on the Sonet label from Sweden. Not sure what the album title was, but I
can check at home. I've got two of the three albums. There was also a
Swedish CD comp on SOnet of stuff from the three albums--including "Breath."
I'll get the info when I'm home tonight. Not sure if the CD comp is still in
print. I got it from a web buddy in Sweden who picked up a copy for me about
5 years ago.

The turntable I have is a pioneer and I got it at best
buy about 5 years ago. In addition to haveing 45 and
33 speeds to play records, it has another dial where
you can adjust the speed within the ranges of 33 and
45. My was tunred up for years and then one day I
adjusted it while listeing to the dickies. Their
voices are high, but not as high as I was playing
them.

so, interestingly, this past week i've (re)seen not one, but two, movies
featuring tunes by love: *sleepers* and *bottlerocket* (both use cuts from

measure)... so it got me thinking, where else in the last few years have you
seen/heard good tunes show up in the movies? obviously *high fidelity* comes
to mind (another one using love!); what else?

Hey New York BOMP-listers, this is where you wanna be this Monday night:

MICHAEL LYNCH AND THE LYNCHMEN will be playing CBGB's MONDAY JANUARY 14th AT 10PM.

MICHAEL LYNCH, whose singles have gone high up the MP3.com charts thanks very much in part to people in BOMP, is rising fast on the New York scene. His songs have been compared to the Beatles, Kinks, Hollies, and others. Here's what THE NAIL had to say about his first album:

<<< What I'm reminded of...are all those great one hit wonder garage bands of that era - the Count Five, the Cyrkle, the Balloon Farm, the Kingsmen and the E-Types. Each of Michael's songs on this album is like one of those terrific little 60's gems. >>>

There ya go, what more do ya need, right? Well, except that he's got members of other BOMP-worthy bands backing him up, namely Ken Anderson of The Rooks on drums, and Doug Mayer of The Contrarains (who wowed the crowd recently at the Wowsville Records anniversary party...or some kind of Wowsville Records party) on bass.

So please come see MICHAEL LYNCH AND THE LYNCHMEN at CBGB's this MONDAY JANUARY 14, at 10 PM. Thanks!

(Don't worry, we'll remind you once more before then).

"Ghost World," while it doesn't feature any rock 'n'
roll, does feature a lot of great vintage jazz and
blues, including Skip James' "Devil Got My Woman."
Plus, I'd love to know where they found that Indian
film clip at the beginning. That number is
incredible.

Also, "Shrek" uses Joan Jett's "Bad Reputation" at one
point. Unfortunately, it also uses a bad redo of "I'm
A Believer," IMHO.

One more: "Mulholland Drive" has a scene where a chick
mimes to Linda Scott's "I've Told Every Litte
Star"....and a version of "Crying" sung in Spanish in
a key moment.

According to the Vinyl Anachronist's column in the latest installment of
Perfect Sound Forever (http://www.furious.com/perfect/):

"I bought the soundtrack CD just because I had to be able to play Mohammed
Rafi's "Jaan Pehechaan Ho," which plays during the opening and closing
credits. It's 'Dick Dale Goes To Calcutta,' and you've never heard anything
like it."

Somebody said this was the Bo Diddley Beach Party record but I think this is
correct, I read something where Bo was complaining about this record not
being him. After reading what Cub Koda said about Beach Party in
allmusic.com, I really want to hear it. if anybody has even a tape, I'll
make a trade for it.

> MCA DID reissue some of Bo's original LP's...in the eighties.

Sounds in NYC had some of these hanging on the wall, about twelve feet from
teh ground....*covered* with shaggy black dust. I sorta wanted to buy them
anyway, but I just couldn't see asking any of their slack team to get 'em
down and sanitize 'em. Then one day they were gone.

I have the "His Greatest Sides" lp, autographed by Bo in 1985 (after a
great, great show FOR KIDS at a tiny amusement park in Chattanooga). When he
picked it up to sign it, he looked at it like "Sh*t, Leonard and Phil are
screwing me from the grave", and said, regarding Frank Kirkland and Jerome:
"Them two guys is dead!" To make my joy complete, my friend swapped him a
Fender medium pick for one of his. It was the size and shape of a Dorito and
had a picture of a horse and the address and phone number of his ranch on
it.

Don't ask me why I did this, but last night I decided to watch a little bit

figured what the hell, how bad can it be? Well, it was much worse than I
could have imagined. I guess I don't even have to tell you how pathetic the
songs or performers were, but I couldn't even understand what most of the
presenters were saying!! Though I'm not a Cher fan, when she came on I was
actually grateful because she was on a level so far above all of the others.
I felt like a man starving to death thankful that at least someone had given

These will usually be listed as plain "Amon Duul". Both albums are somewhat
VU-sounding; it's just that Psychedelic Underground sounds like Sister Ray VU
while Para Dieswarts Duul sounds like Jesus VU. (-8 If you like Psychedelic
Underground, the albums Collapsing and Disaster were culled from the same

For some strange reason, Dave Anderson (who played with Amon Duul II, but not
with Amon Duul to my knowledge) revived the band name sometime in the eighties
and put out several albums under the Amon Duul name. Those are best left for
the hard core collectors, although one does stand as the last recording by Bob
Calvert.

That Turtles' song was a killer, and it does exist on CD - on one of the
first GRANULES CDs, which were tough to find as LP's, but more are coming out
of Oz as CD's... a really great series, by the way.

Plus, one of the greatest kitsch covers of all time -- a guy and his girl, in
their overdecorated early sixties living room, listening to Ray Charles
albums (Ray owned the fucking label! Nice cross-promotion, Ray!). The hell of
it is, the cover of Ray's own I'M ALL YOURS, BABY elpee was taken in that
same living room! And again, the cover had Ray trying to seduce some young
thing...with the goofy, kitschy design of the living room intact!!

You wanna hear his totally re-worked (atmospheric, even) version of "Don't
Jump Me Mother" on the flip of the Try, Try, Try single. Kudos to Copey
for knowing his garage/psych and being a champion for such people as DMZ
here in the UK.

Of late I have been listening to "Autogeddon" and find it much more
palatable than the sterile production on his Island material from the
80s. You know, Cope, together with bands such as the Long Ryders, Rain
Parade and Dream Syndicate were totally fucked-over by the production
values of the time (that heavy off-beat snare sounds). They had good songs
but all of the piss and vinegar was taken away by a too clean production.

Don't know if you've heard it but it's nice but not great. The Raydios were
better as far as I'm concern.

Dirtsnap seems to be quite a neat label (Vultures, Briefs, Spits)... What's
next?

I looked on Amazon and Amazon UK for 'Triangle' today, and they didn't
have it. Then, for shits and giggles, I decided to look at www.amazon.de which
I assumed would be the German Amazon. And there it was! listed under titles
for the Beau Brummels. Only I don't read/speak German. Here's what it said:

 10. Triangle von the Beau Brummels

Does this mean it's "out of print"??? Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be any
way I can order from them because there's no "english" language instructions and
none of the "buy" buttons seem to work. Any ideas who might carry this German
import??

OOOPS! Forgot about that one! My mistake. Maybe I
should have said that the emphasis wasn't on rock 'n'
roll per se. Either way, Laurent, you are absolutely
right, about both The Buzzcocks and "Ghost World"
being an awesome film!

ya know, i bet the german language reminds some old folks of them
nazi's....maybe we should ban that, too. ;)

anyway, according to my rudi german, looks like it's currently unavailable
but that you should check back later. in other words, SOL. later

a buddy of mine hipped me to a old rec called power plant by a band called
the golden dawn. anyone else know about these cats? from houston, on
International Artists - same label as the 13th floor elevators. singer
sounds almost exactly like Roky -- music starts out kind of elevators-lite,
but really picks up. it's on cd, but may be outta print.

another killer find:
the fabulous beats go country style. this was a cheezy knockoff rec from
the 60s. merseybeat versions of country classics by some studio band, w/ a
great cover pic of an obviously fake group w/ moptop haircuts on a farm. an
obvious attempt to cash in, but the rec is actually really great! very cool
arrangements of the likes of walkin' after midnight, send me the pillow that
you dream on, etc. if you didn't know the tunes (i actually knew only a
handful) you'd swear it was a searchers record. anyone else heard this?

All right, I really gotta take issue with you comparing Cher to a Snickers
bar. I mean, I could understand maybe Zagnut or something, but Snickers is
tops!

Really? I have that Raydios LP, and wasn't too impressed with it. I just
wanted to check out Firestarter because those who have managed to get their
hands on it have been hailing it as some kinda power pop masterpiece. Do
you have it, or have you just heard it?
