Bonjour,

I just purhcased the "Before Birdmen Flew" comps, volumes 2 thru 4! Goodness
gracious, what brilliant stuff!

Speaking of comps, I'd like to bring to your attention a new one called
"Vive le Québec...dans le vent" on Echo 67 records from France. Great tracks
by Québec bands from the 60's, not all of them in French. Most of them have
never seen the light of a compilation before and it is worth the buy even if
you thought you've had about all the French music you can handle! Included
is Les Sinners' fantastic "Groovy Time", as heard in the movie "Kid
Sentiment"! Not as snotty as "Nice Try", but quite a killer!

Ultra Chicks volume 6 is also out, haven't heard it yet tho...

Mimi

I have it. New (slightly different) CD packaging. Great version of "Iko Iko"
in French, which is interesting, because parts of the Dixie Cups' original
were in French, too, I think....

I also have a neat comp of French-language 60's cover versions
called -Histoires de Filles-. Basically big 60's pop hits like "Rescue Me,"
"You Can't Hurry Love" and "Satisfaction" sung by female pop singers in
French. I can't tell if the singers are from France or Canada, though (there
are no liner notes; it's basically a bootleg).

The Sore Losers! Now there's a great film. Got all I could ask for in a
recent film: garage rock, blood, David Friedman as himself, AND best of
all, NAKED BABES! Btw, D'lana and her husband James are currently living in
Dallas, nice folks, met 'em recently in Austin @ a Feast of Snakes show.
Feast of Snakes are definitely a Dallas supergroup, as Alex Cuervo
(Blacktop/Gospel Swingers/Now Time Delegation) and Hank
Tosh (The Deadites) are also in it. Damned rockin' too!

Rob: Rushmore and Tenenbaums are movies for people that fancy themselves
intellectual, because of the locales and backdrops of the scenes and because
they take on a subject rarely tackled in films, class distinction.

But they aren't funny or witty or deep, just semi-observant.

Yeah, why bother doing another film on class distinction when
it'll always come up short when compared to "Caddy Shack"?

Caddy Shack was funny. Caddy Shack didn't condescend. Caddy Shack has
memorable scenes and lines.

So what if it's low-brow and crude? What the fuck do you think your beloved
garage rock or CBGB punk-rock is?

Caught -Bring Out The Dead- on TV a few nights back. One of the latest
Scorcese movies, It had two Clash songs, a few Van Morrison songs, and
central-to-the-plot use of Johnny Thunders' "You Can't Put Your Arms Around
A Memory." He always has a lot of good music in his movies. Apparently he
would blast the Clash on-set during the making of -Raging Bull-. The movie
was just OK. It seemed to me that Scorcese, like a lot of directors lately,
was being lazy and using our pop music heritage as a cultural shorthand to
tell us how we should feel or what's going on in the scene. It's easier to
buy the rights to "Born To Be Wild" and play that to illustrate your
characters exhiliration at taking a road trip, than it is to show us why we
should care some other way.

Or am I just totally wrong?

Yeah, I'm a real fancy pants...yeesh.

For the record:

A) I never said I didn't like "Caddy Shack". "Caddy Shack II"
   is another story, though.

B) If I recall correctly, quite a few of the original punks
   were former art school students.

C) The fact that a movie isn't low-brow and crude doesn't
necessarily mean it's only suitable for pseudo-intellectuals
   and snobs.

Would I be correct in guessing that you're not a fan of
the Coen Brothers' films either?

I've heard the same criticisms made about the
Coen Brothers films that you're making about
"Rushmore": overly-intellectual and condescending,
especially in reference to "Barton Fink" and
"The Hudsucker Proxy".

I'd have to say that I've found Wes Anderson's films
to have more in common the Coen Brothers' work than
either have in common with the average Hollywood piece-
o-shit (I haven't seen "The Royal Tennenbaums" yet but
I thought "Bottle Rocket" and "Rushmore" were both
pretty good.)

I dunno about the Cohen Brothers, but the Coen

It was another Wes Anderson & Owen Wilson project.

Hmm. I like Rushmore and Caddyshack. Sometimes I can be a real film snob,
but at least I TRY not to pigeonhole my tastes too badly, otherwise I might
miss out on something really good. It's like comparing a film like "Seven
Samurai" to "Attack of the Mushroom People". Remember that Akira Kurosawa
and Inoshira Honda were best friends AND great admirers of each other's
films. If only they had worked together, we might have been treated to
something like "Attack of the Seven Mushroom Samurai People".

Can anyone tell me what content was edited from this showing (which I
accidentally taped using the EP speed instead of SP, meaning I've gotta set

Cage is every bit as overexposed as he is guilty of over-ACTING. I just
can't take him anymore; he's done so many laughably bad performances lately.

As for "Bringing Out The Dead," it's the weakest Scorcese flick I've seen in
ages, maybe ever. BUT... for an EXCELLENT treatment of the same scenario,
check out the far superior "Broken Vessels," released a full year prior.
Excellent flick.

Other Bo Chess titles hard to come by but highly recommended:

"Originator" LP (White cover w/ trademark guiar & stool)* excellent lesser
 known cuts! >>

Including extremely odd songs like "Africa Speaks" and "A Background To A

<<"500% More Man" LP (White border w/ plants & guitar I think..)Another odd
one w/ great lesser known tracks... >>

It was a white border with a photo of a statue in the park...

I should also mention that Chess confusingly issued two different albums
called BO DIDDLEY (the first one has a color shot of Bo and drummer Frank
Kirkland, the second has Bo's name in raised letters). Both are recommended
highly.
