In the Belushi bio "Wired", I seem to remember (I read
it around twenty years ago) that a chapter or two of the
book went into the whole "Neighbors" debacle. Belushi was
on a bit of the star trip at the time and I think he had
a lot more to do with the way the film turned out than the
director.

But, yeah, how great of a comedy can you expect from the
director of "Rocky" and "The Karate Kid.

Also, Belushi was originally cast as the obnoxious neighbor
but he and Aykroyd decided to switch roles before filming
started.

RE: AMC

AMC has been editing and inserting commercials for quite a few months - I
don't have the link, but anybody that is a film buff should complain... I
did, and did the same with TVLand, which used to show those great sixties
shows unedited, but alas, not any more.

Don't know what could have been cut from "Rock 'n Roll High School" - but
maybe edited for time, shave a few minutes here and there.

I have no reason to believe that Gene Simmons' LIS
group was the same as the ones who did "1, 2, 3 And I
Fell." Gene's group also included Steve Coronel who
went on with Gene, Paul Stanley (Eisen), and some
others to form Wicked Lester, which evolved to KISS.

Gene refers to the Long Island Sounds as his
"high-school garage band," and doesn't even mention
them ever recording anything or going on to bigger
things without him.

Moby Grape's first LP was recorded with a lot of
stereo-panning effects. Unfortunately, it left a lot
to be desired when played on mono phonographs. Was
there a mono LP that was properly mixed? What of the
singles (almost all the songs on the album were put
out on singles simultaneously).

I caught the last half-hour of "Rock And Roll High
School" about 8 or so this morning and the first song
I hear on the soundtrack is "High School" by the MC-5,
which while not being the Ramones sounds pretty fresh
for a 1970 song being used in a 1979 movie. Should
have caught the rest.

I noticed that either this month or next, all the
"American Pop" films are going to be Abbott & Costello
movies from the '40s. That doesn't sound like
"American Pop," it just sounds like AMC. I miss all
the rock films and the scopitones/TV clips...

I love "She'll Come Back," which appeared on a later
LP called "Wooden Head," which has also been reissued
by Sundazed. Someone mentioned the Turtles being a
first-rate album band... I have to agree. Getting Ray
Davies to half-write and produce "Turtle Soup" was a
stroke of genius and a bit of a lucky break.

But for an album of leftovers, b-sides, movie tunes
and alternates, "Wooden Head" is a pretty cohesive
work. Perhaps not as conceptual as "Battle Of The
Bands," but a consistently good listen.

I used to have that Laserlight boxed set, which was
pretty good, if cheap, and had the full support of Flo
& Eddie, plus unreleased masters. Now I have all the
albums on Repertoire reissues, except for the Sundazed
versions of "Wooden Head" and "Turtle Soup."

I'm especially looking forward to Rhino's upcoming
"Solid Zinc" Turtles anthology.

Here's a top five from me, excluding the classic hits
and somewhat emphasizing their "corny pop side":

Just A Room (from "You Baby")
We'll Meet Again (another dig-that-kazoo gem)
You Don't Have To Walk In The Rain (pretty mature)
She'll Come Back
On A Summer's Day

I thought we'd settled this already...

The "live-on-the-beach" album (BO DIDDLEY'S BEACH PARTY) and the "surf" album
(SURFIN' WITH BO DIDDLEY) are two different records. SURFIN" is the studio
album that was fleshed out with these substandard Billy Lee Riley
instrumental tracks. ...BEACH PARTY is the album that's supposed to be 100%
untamed Bo, live & outtasite for real.

With this in mind, it's a shame that Bo never made a REAL, honest-to-goodness
surf record. Listening to his instrumentals like "Spanish Guitar" or
"Mumblin' Guitar" (or even the guitar breaks in "Road Runner"), he could have
stared down Dick Dale, Dave Myers, and the rest on their own surf turf.

Hmmm, Bo and Dick are still alive - it's not too late for a supersession
album. Just think the producers should do like Quincy Jones did at the USA
For Africa ("We Are The World") sessions - put a sign up over the studio
doorway saying "PLEASE CHECK YOUR EGOS HERE!!"

<<And I would love more info on the
possibility of Diddley lps pressed for sale on the frat circuit.... >>

A friend of mine says that when his dad was in college in the early sixties,
he and his frat brothers recorded a Bo show that was then privately
distributed amongst the frat brothers (and soror sisters). I don't think MCA
would be interested - they're too busy repackaging the obvious material for
the umpteenth time ("The Millenium Collection???").

There was indeed a mono version of the first Lp which came out. I haven't
heard it yet, but I imagine it was properly mixed. This version
was reissued on Lp by Edsel in the eighties. All the singles (five issued
simultaneously), the mixes were all mono. The mono single versions of
"Omaha" and "Hey Grandma" are featured on the double cd that Sony
put out in '93 (produced by Sundazed's Bob Irwin; it's sadly out of print,
but well the effort to locate).

The Grape's stuff is among the few sixties rock records that I actually
prefer in stereo. Nearly all my faves (the Byrds, Beatles, Dylan, etc...)
sound better in mono. A nicer, crisper sound, and more time was usually
allocated for mono and single versions than stereo mixes. Besides, you don't
lose any of the music on either channel and it sounds better in the car that
way. Some records that ARE BETTER in
stereo would be those of Esquivel (R.I.P.) and Mancini.

I watched it on AMC last night and that scene was there. The only things I

When I saw Royal Tenenbaums, the audience gave it a standing ovation and I
was included. A deeply layered absurd comic film with Gene Hackman playing
an asshole who slowly turns out to be a real asshole, not some
super-loveable old Hollywood coot, this guy pushes the envelope of good
taste. (For instance in a heated argument he calls Danny Glover "Soul
Train" only they dubbed it to Coltrane in the movie, "Soul Train" would have
pushed the scene over the edge.) Very funny in that super-successful
wealthy new York family kind of way... Like those punx you'd know in NYC
bands and when you'd visit them you'd quickly realize they lived off a trust
fund and had this bizarre culture of bagels from "this one place over there"
and not "that damn place" on the 1st floor of their building. So yeah, like I
know that not everyone knew anyone like that, so I gotta mention on
such a list w/ such a broad geography that if none of that New Yorky stuff
means anything to you, then the film may not either.

Kumar Pallana from Bottle Rocket and Rushmore did a pretty stunning job in
scenes alone with Hackman. A more skilled actor would have overplayed the role of "houseboy." There's another scene in the film with a funny
visual nod to the French Connection. There are cool rock and roll songs on
the soundtrack, one standout Ramones number, but nothing to make a rock fan
see it for rock reasons. I actually thought Gwynneth Paltrow was pretty good. Bill Murray is only in the film briefly.

A friend in the bidness said the film reminded him of an indie-pop record, crafted for quirkiness first. that could set people off, it doesn't have any of the sixties feel that Rushmore did. (I thought Rushmore reminded me a lot of If and other brit class flix)

Yep, and I'm convinced the movie would have been much better if they kept it
that way. Belushi would have made the perfect bizarre, imposing neighbor,
and Ackroyd would have been fine as the straight arrow suburban guy. I can
understand why they switched (the actors wanted to break out of the types

the BAND sounds fantastic .Last night had the good fortune to see loads of great music in Big D. Firstly, Feast of Snakes featuring the amazingly prolific and good pal Hank Tosh of many-bands-too-numerous-to-name-fame and Alex from
The Gospel Swingers/Now Time Delegation and oh, shit, I don't need to name all the peeps in the band, but MAAAN, that show rocked. Was the right thing at the right time.

Then I swept over to another venue to catch Sylvain Sylvain booked by my new friend, Joey, and that was ultra smashing as well.............and the after hours party featuring, well, loads of great people, would like to give a shout out
to
my new Riverboat Gambler pal and of course to all and sundry that I met last night, some of whom apparently lurk on this list!

Off to see mr. tosh in another of his bands, The Deadites, who came oh-so-close to winning in the CAVESTOMP! Online Battle of the Bands contest from 2000....any Dallas/FW folk still at home, come out to Bar of Soap, I'm out the door-
