they were playing in the movies), but it just didn't work for me the other
way around, especially compared to the book. >>

actually, that's what i always dug about that movie - belushi wearing
those dorky old-man glasses and having the grey hair and all that, i actually
thought that worked pretty well; something about john belushi playing the
emasculated suburbanite - it's just so bizarre, it works. for me, anyway.
plus the fact that that movie has a great, hilarious score - that little
piece with the farting trombone, that goes into the theremin bit whenever he
looks over at aykroyd's house.
i don't think this movie is "citizen kane" or anything, it's just
amazingly weird - this nonstop barrage of bizarre little scenes, tim
kazurinsky as the white-trash garage owner, earl's bottle collection, random
weird shit like aykroyd getting caught looking through earl's checkbook and
going "HEY! 247 dollars? is THAT all you had left at the end of last month?"
or that bird gettin fried on the powerline when the dog pisses on it...all
this, and buried way deep on the soundtrack someplace in that movie is
aykroyd doing a voice-over for whatever movie is on earl's TV, saying
something like "...and now we return to 'creature with the neutron brain'
starring jane wyman and sky saxon..."
just a weird little movie....i've always liked it.

out on singles simultaneously). >>

The mono LP is mixed "properly", and there's a huge difference in the way it
sounds. That said, I still prefer the stereo version, heard IN STEREO, in
this particular case.

All those singles do in fact have the mono LP mixes.

Just wanted to get in on this one before it goes away. Wes Anderson and Owen Wilson are rare talents. It's obvious when someone has a real love and respect for their craft and their peers. I also enjoyed the tip of the hat to The French Connection that Don mentioned. These guys now have three successful features and a style all their own at age 30. That's pretty remarkable. For what it's worth I loved all three films and I respectfully disagree that they were too clever or pretentious (I don't recall the exact criticisms). I think I've read that Rushmore star (and FF Coppola nephew) Jason Schwartzman is in a band...anyone heard them?
I can't let an opportunity to talk about the Coens on my fave e-list slide either. I just saw The Man Who Wasn't There. Another in a long list of terrific films by those guys. I think Joel Coen already ranks among the greatest directors. That movie along with Raising Arizona, Blood Simple and Fargo are IMO instant classics and they have about a half dozen other solid efforts. I don't think they've hit a speed bump yet though personally I wasn't crazy about O Brother (loved the tunes tho').
A little plug for horror fans... I came across a site with a ton of great clips. Creepyclips.com If you're a gorehound and you have a fast connection I know you'll love it.
Cheers,
Andrew

After I interviewed Bo (circa 1986) and spent time with his nephew (when he played bar gigs in DC), that was the first thing that Miriam Linna asked about- the scooter.

Bo said something like, "It wasn't mine. The label owned it. I never saw it again."

80s.

My second question is, was this song recorded originally in the
60s, if so by who and where can you get that?!"

I'll just add that there was also a version by J.J. Jackson (of "But It's

Since we all have "subjective" and often different tastes about what albums
are great, or what movies suck, I usually try not to make any comments to
"stick up" for something that I personally like-- I'd rather focus on something
more positive than someone's negative comments --but having said that, I
would like to say that I loved Rushmore the first time I saw it, and laughed
out loud in the theatre. I thought it was the quirkiest comedy I'd seen since,
I don't know, Harold And Maude or something. In fact, the "love story"-
love triangle part of the movie, btw, between Max (Schwartzman) and an
older teacher and Bill Murray made for the movie's funniest moments.

But, subsequent viewings of Rushmore haven't held up as well, and I can
now see why other people think it's boring, dull, etc.. Still, you have to give
Wes Anderson the credit for at least *trying* to make an original movie, which
is very very hard in my opinion (I'm trying to write a screenplay right now,
and I'm finding it's difficult writing scenes that haven't been done before).

I actually wanted to see The Royal Tenenbaums last night, but the two people
I was with roped me into seeing Black Hawk Down. Wow. Talk about a
downer!!

> I think I've read that Rushmore star (and FF Coppola nephew) Jason

He's in Phantom Planet, who have released at least one album (on Geffen).

I also love the Coen Bros., particularly their earlier movies where the quirkiness
of the characters, the tracking camera shots and other oddities seemed fresh
and not contrived. I'm not a huge fan of The Man Who Wasn't There, but I
appreciate that they have the power to be able to make a modern attempt at
classic Film Noir, even though it wasn't a successful attempt IMO. Maybe I'll
like it more when it hits the satellite or cable TV in a few months.

In the Belushi bio "Wired", I seem to remember (I read
it around twenty years ago) that a chapter or two of the
book went into the whole "Neighbors" debacle. Belushi was
on a bit of the star trip at the time and I think he had
a lot more to do with the way the film turned out than the
director.

But, yeah, how great of a comedy can you expect from the
director of "Rocky" and "The Karate Kid.

Also, Belushi was originally cast as the obnoxious neighbor
but he and Aykroyd decided to switch roles before filming
started.>>

This is why I love this movie, and one of the primary reasons I think it
works. Reverse casting. Belushi, usually the obnoxious, in your face guy is
the square and Akroyd is great as the obnoxious neighbor. The "coffeee
scene" alone always has me in stitches.

John Avildsen? Also directed "Save The Tiger" with Jack Lemmon, which I

I managed to pick up a copy of Ian Hunter's book with the diary of Mott The
Hoople's 1972 US Tour. It's a pretty good read so far, kind of a glam rock
version of Keroauc's On The Road. I was surprised this was still in print. I
found it on amazon.com. Any body else ever read it?

The guys at Bad Afro Records sent me their 45s when they came
out and immediately after playing them at the DWC I had people
coming up and asking who it was. The split with the
Hellacopters is awesome too. (I even like the Hellacopters on
that one!) And then, when I got to see them live last summer...
WOW! Fantastic. And a nice bunch of guys too. I'd actually met
one of them at the first Wild Weekend but he'd never told me he
was in a band. They're on tour through Europe in March so look
out for them. The London date is Thursday 28th March. It won't
be at the Dirty Water Club for various reasons, even though it is -
they tell me - their preferred venue. I might find an alternative
location and do the gig anyway. But if not then they'll play at the
Metro Bar on Oxford Street. -- PJ

I've got it on These Cat's Ain't Nothin' But Trash, an album from
around 1983 which also has tracks by Thee Milkshakes and The
String Rays. I don't know if it is on CD or not but as Mike runs a
company these days which produces CDs, including the design
and printing of the inserts, I wouldn't be surprised to find that it is
available on CD.

The Cannibals are still going by the way. They play at the Dirty
Water Club around once a year and are generally terrible (see
pictures of them at http://www.dirtywaterclub.com). However, they
played last week at the Club for Losers in Soho and were really
good. Mike is still very passionate about the music and apart
from still playing the occasional gig with the Cannibals, is
working on getting a radio show started and also is volunteering
his time to print the new issue of Shindig! magazine at minimal
cost. He's a good bloke, even if a bit OTT and hyperactive at
times!

If you have cable/satellite tv then look out for a show called
Roadies on a channel called UK Horizon. One episode follows
Mike from his home, picking up the gear and band members
and turning up to play a show at the Dirty Water Club, only to be
upstaged by the support band, The Parkinsons. Mike's totally
embarrassed by the tv show but it is great fun. He was also the
subject of a documentary a year or two back on, I think, Channel
4. (Steve Coleman, you have it on video so tell us about it. And,
by the way, I want to see it again cos I have to interview Mike for a
magazine in the next couple of weeks.)

If you get in touch with me off list, Mark, to remind me then I'll find
his email address and website for you (which, for some reason,
are on my computer at work and not on my computer here at
home).

Can you give a little fuller account as he's supposed to come here to KC in a couple of weeks. Who's playing with him? Does he have anything out? Did he do any Dolls songs? Questions, questions. Thanks

You're the second person who has suggested that the band was actually called
the Pilgrimage! You know, I *was* rushing around doing x-mas shopping - it's
entirely possible that I remembered the name wrong!

Well, first - I am certain that he told me they were on Mercury - so it
probably was the Pilgrimage... second - he told me he still has all the
original acetates of the stuff they put out and wouldn't mind hearing from
someone who wants to re-release it. I have his e-mail address at home. If
you mail me off list, I'll send it to you!

Absolutely! For instance, I really like their version of "Going Down To
Liverpool".

As was Baroque Hoedown. But 16 Tambourines remains my favorite 3
O'Clock record. "Jetfighter" still gets me revved up. In my first year of
teaching ('95-'96), I was still green enough to be willing to monitor
Saturday detention. (Trust me, the extra $64 pre-tax is NOT worth getting
up early on a Saturday morning to watch teenagers for 3 hours.) Anyway, the
kids get a break about halfway through. So we turned on the tube to MTV.
For some reason, they were doing something on fighter pilots or something...
And what was being used as the soundtrack? Yep. And the kids thought it
was a pretty cool song, too.

 "Arrive Without Traveling" was pretty

I'm with you on AWT, but while Ever After might've been "adequate" for
its time, I can't see myself ever listening to it now.

  In 1988, I detested

Me, too. It wasn't worth the two bucks I paid.

I really liked these guys. My favorite song was probably "Tell It To
The Judge On Sunday", but there were a bunch more I really loved, too. From
their slightly later material, I was a big fan of "Looking For Lewis &
Clark".

Plotless, but a montage of individual portraits/scenarios connected
in some way. I found this film very interesting as it really focused
on specific characters and their own little trip, much like real
life.

Rodney Dangerfield! Now THAT'S whats missing in latter

AMC must be goin' downhill FAST, 'cause when they
showed "Rock'n'Roll High School" just a month or so

Adam Ant Charged with Assault, Firearms Offense

2002-01-14 00:29:33 GMT+00:00 (Reuters)
LONDON (Reuters) - Eighties pop star Adam Ant, famed for his chart-topping
hits "Prince Charming" and "Stand and Deliver," has been charged with
assault and possessing a firearm after an alleged incident in a London pub.

A police spokesman said on Monday the 47-year-old musician from Primrose
Hill, north London, was charged with possession of a firearm or imitation
firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.

"He is also being charged with criminal damage and one charge of actual
bodily harm on a man in his forties," the spokesman added.

The charges relate to an alleged incident at a north London pub on Saturday
night.

The star, whose real name is Stuart Goddard, was bailed to appear in court
on January 18.

Adam Ant, currently on the comeback trail, has been planning a national tour
in April.

What year did Gary Zekley die? I ask because of this rather peculiar sentence
that can be found in that new book "Bubblegum Music Is The Naked Truth" on
page 107, about midway through the last paragraph on the page:

"Unfortunately, in 1995, Gary Zekley died of a heart attack in 1996 at the
age of 53."

You would also like "Waking Life," also by
Linklatter, which is along the lines of "Slacker"
except that a) it's an animated film (rotoscoped) and
b) the main character listens to people spout off
their philosophies in a dream he can't wake up from.
Check it out.
