I didn't realize that there was much in the way of negative responses to The
Hudsucker Proxy; I thought it was a hell of a lot of fun too. Haven't
caught TMWWT yet, but I'm looking forward to it.

"O Brother" was good fun, too, but the BEST adaptation of Homer's Odyssey is
still Walter Hill's "The Warriors."

That's a pretty funny experience in itself, isn't it? My friends and I were

in a fool's paradise and refusing to believe he wasn't a genius despite all

some friends of mine saw rushmore in the theater -- i think a lot of people
thought it was gonna be some high school teenage flick like american pie

actually started to like rushmore more and more w/ each viewing. i don't

It's £5 on the door or £3 if you download a flyer from the band's website www.thehotwires.com. The Hotwires wire together raw garage riffs, strangulated lonely planet poetry and a heavy soul rhythm section to devastating effect and it's your only real reason to leave yer house this month. Here are the first dates at the club for 2002:

FRIDAY 25th JANUARY -
Yet another great band from the land of the rising sun! Link Wray licks and
garage-punk whomp from Tokyo boys THE MAD 3. They're supporting one of my
fave bands on the scene right now, a group with several singles and an
album on the Poptones label, BEACHBUGGY.

FRIDAY 8th FEBRUARY -
It's the fifth anniversary of the Dirty Water Club and this year's first
appearance of someone who's been with us all of the way, Mr Billy Childish,
previously with his Headcoats and now with THE BUFF MEDWAYS. Support will
probably be from THE DISCORDS who, of course, are also "second to no-one".
(And don't forget to ask your local record store for Thee Headcoats' "Live
At The Dirty Water Club" albumout now on Damaged Goods.)

FRIDAY 22nd FEBRUARY -
Another Medway group that's been with us for some years now, THE SOLAR
FLARES. Graham Day and Allan Crockford played a date down in the Medway
Towns with the original line-up of The Prisoners over the holiday period.
And judging by the brilliance of that performance they're gonna be on top
form tonight. And with the addition of Parsley on organ we can expect them
to be a more than adequate replacement for those legendary Prisoners.
Support to be confirmed.

The Dirty Water Club is at The Boston, Junction Road, London N19

Yeah, Wilko Johnson gave us a copy of it (along with one of his own band on

out in Bklyn - with the Fleshtones. I don't recall the date, but I'm sure
Jon Weiss will chime in with the info if requested, yes? That night will
definitely super rock - although we're not on the bill. <grin>

We *should* try to set something up at the Court, though - that's a fun

Our upcoming shows are as follows:

1.18.02 Continental NYC w/reno's men, bullies, turbo ac's & waldos - we're

1.26.02 Abbey Lounge Somerville MA w/downbeat 5 & the konks - we're up first

Hey David, I usually read all your posts and I think you could really get
into the Long Ryders!
The "Anthology" double-CD came out on Chronicles/PolyGram in 1998 , with 40
songs and liner notes by David Fricke.
No overkill there, as you're actually hit by the remarkable quality and
constancy of their body of work.
Highlights include "Born To Believe In You", "I'll Get Out Somehow",
"Capturing The Flag", "Basic Black", "17 Ways", "Gunslinger Man", the
NRBQ/Groovies number "I Want You Bad", "The Light Gets In The Way", etc.
Probably my fave 1980s band along with Green On Red and Died Pretty!

Is there more than one David posting? I have Native Sons and have actually
been playing it a lot lately. My brother had Two-fisted Tales which he
preferred and I didn't like as much. Haven't heard it in at least ten years
though.

didn't Sid Griffin move to Scandinavia where he is revered as a demi-god, or
something like that?

Now Died Pretty, there's a band! That four song Ambergris record was
excellent, and the Free Dirt album topped it. Then they just sort of seemed
to repeat themselves. Or am I wrong?

Subject: Re: Blue Things/Preflyte Byrds

I kinda dig the Blue Things CD, especially considering
it sounds a lot better than the Collectables things
that had been out for years. The stuff reminds me of
the kind of album the Byrds would have made if they
had decided to go back to their roots after "Notorious
Byrd Brothers," without going the "Sweethearts Of The
Rodeo" route. Or something the Beau Brummels would
have done had they finished their third Autumn album,
and Autumn hadn't sold out to Warner Brothers.

After 1966, they began to get a bit more psychedelic
to varying degrees of success, although their last
single, a version of "Somebody Help Me" backed with a
New Vaudeville Band-style number "Yes My Friend"
(complete with megaphoned vocals) paled in comparison
to the original stuff. I'd recommend getting the
Collectables comps only if you truly dig what you hear
on the Rewind CD and want to delve deeper into the
vaults and the folkier roots of their sound.

I like the new Byrds "Preflyte Sessions" disc. It's a
very attractive, well-packaged and annotated set,
although it's a bit of a completist's specialty. You
could settle for the recent single-disc import of the
original "Preflyte" album, or you could track down
Rhino's "In The Beginning" CD if you're merely curious
about the earliest Byrds sessions. But if you're a big
Byrds fan, and you don't mind up to three or four
fairly similar versions of the some of the same 18 or
so tunes, you can't go wrong. Plus, the accompanying
booklet gives a fascinating glimpse into the story
behind those early recordings and the burgeoning
California folk-rock sound.

I have to throw my hat into the ring behind the
previously unreleased David Crosby version of "Get
Together," which is probably now my favorite take on
that song. It's quite a bit more upbeat than the
best-known Youngbloods version, with a Latin feel that
reminds one of a Trini Lopez record. And Roger
McGuinn's 12-string solo on one of the unreleased
versions of "You Movin'" is wild, even compared to the
amazing solo he would pull off a few years later in
"Eight Miles High."

All in all, it's a great way for Sundazed to start out
a year that holds the promise of a lot of great
reissues on the label.

Didn't get that one (is that also on Trippin' Elephant?), but I did get a stack of TMGE releases, too, a couple dating back to '96. Amazing stuff. That and a GREAT CD by a band called Jighead (Jig "Mojo" Head), also on Trippin' Elephant.

He didn't quite nail it. "The Warriors" is definitely a
cult classic, but it ain't based on Homer's Odyssey. The film
is an adaptation of Sol Yurick's novel which was based on

Second tablet?, I swallowed the entire bottle and then spend an
hour quietly gazin' at my Portuguese Bishops 45s tryin' to gather
my wits. But yeah, I think I'll be OK. I *am* wondering tho' why Mr
Coleman never mentioned this before?. Oh well, if he doesn't feel
like sharing that kinda info with us, I guess there's no reason why I
should tell him that there's somebody on this list why *might* have
a video of an early 80s Fleshtones appearance from Belgium TV....
Besides, you wouldn't be really interested now would you Steve?.

Cheers,

I haven't read the Yurick novel nor any Xenophon, but I can tell you that
the movie parallels the plot of The Odyssey pretty much to the letter. From
the Oracle--the babe on the radio whose mouth is all you see--to the
Lizzies, who threaten to bewitch 'em, to a Scylla and Charibdis situation
where they gotta choose one of two perils, to say nothing of the overall
struggle to return to their home turf, if you look, there's a parallel to
pretty much each and every episode in the Odyssey, and IIRC, they come up in
the same order, too. It's been too long since I've seen it to lay it all
out, but I suspect Hill combined Yurick's novel with Homer's structure,
because the more you look for parallels to The Odyssey, the more you find.
It follows Homer FAR more closely than the Coens did, for example.

Yeah, see, "Anabasis" is also an ancient greek
myth/story, following a similar plot.

"Xenophon the Athenian was born 431 B.C. He was a
pupil of Socrates. He marched with the Spartans, and
was exiled from Athens. Sparta gave him land and
property in Scillus, where he lived for many years
before having to move once more, to settle in Corinth.
He died in 354 B.C.

The Anabasis is his story of the march to Persia to
aid Cyrus, who enlisted Greek help to try and take the
throne from Artaxerxes, and the ensuing return of the
Greeks, in which Xenophon played a leading role. This
occurred between 401 B.C. and March 399 B.C."

i wouldn't say that you're wrong, just that i don't agree....in fact, one of
my stumbling blocks has been that they seemed too eager to go in other
directions, rather then just repeat the last album (which, being a lazy
fucker, i'd have preferred). course, they've always managed to win me over
but the newest one (everydaydream) sounds like way too much work...synthetic
dance music?? yeesh, but i fear it'll start to sound good if i give it some
time....but this time i'm not gonna do it, haha. my fave is DOUGHBOY'S

(satisfied). later

The Coens didn't follow Homer much at all. I think they
just threw that "Based on Homer's Odyssey" in at the
beginning, along with a couple references like the sirens
and the cyclops, as a goof, kinda like the whole "This
film is based on true events" joke at the beginning of
"Fargo"...

I read an interview with them where they said pretty much exactly that,
without QUITE coming out and admitting it... ; )

Their are more than a couple of references . . .

References to Homer's Odyssey: The names of George
Clooney and Holly Hunter's characters (Ulysses &
Penelope); the one-eyed Big Dan as the Cyclops (blinded
with a burning pole); the three girls by the river as the
Sirens; Ulysses' wife marrying someone else when he
comes home; the old-man disguise; the changing of one of
Ulysses' companions into an animal; the Baptists as the
Lotus-eaters. (imdb)

Seems like more that just a goof.

The old blind man piloting the train car at the beginning of the film who
just about predicts the ending of the movie struck me as the equivalent of a
Greek oracle, too (especially as oracles tended to be blind in Greek myth,
IIRC). I don't quite remember if there was a similar figure in the Odyssey
(read it in college), but I wouldn't be surprised.

In a warehouse in the Mission district on February 9th a band called "Charles
Atlas" will be playing. Check out catacombs.org for more info (address time
etc). This place normally does gospel music but they have a secular show
once a month with some cool bands from the San Francisco area playing. The
place is very low key and only holds 100 people so it's basically like seeing
a band in a large rehearsal space with trippy lighting and a good sound
system. Here's a review of the band:

CHARLES ATLAS, "TWO MORE HOURS"
> There is no person in this band with the last name of Atlas. This is a
project sort of thing from Charles Wyatt, Chicago resident who strummed the
guitar strings for San Francisco's slow-core charmers "Dart" as well as
performed with Piano Magic on "A Trick of the Sea" as well as the
collaborative single with Low, "Sleep at the Bottom". This CD is a collection
of tracks improvised from various sessions of Charles tinkering around and
then sending the tapes off to friends to add other bits and pieces. Friends
who have added tinkerings to this CD include Alan Sparhawk of Low, members of
Buddha on the Moon, ISAN and a couple more friends. The result is an
unsurprisingly blissful and melodic, spacious and trancey, beautifully
crafted and varied CD. The first track starts the disc off in a more
traditional sustained guitar sound, with loops and mesmerising delay effets.
The rest of the disc jumps around between more electronic sounds and
backwards drum samples and loops, ending on a
> pretty and serene piece for acoustic guitar, piano and droney effects.
Never for a minute does this sound amateur or half-assed, Charles Atlas could
sure as hell teach some of the noodly ambient dronesters out there a thing or
two about VARIETY (something all too rare these days). This one will be a
hard one to come across in average stores and I suggest just sending an email
to Mike at StarStar records out of Milwaukee at mstar@execpc.com. This disc
is highly recommended. - Jon Whitney
