I'll chime in with a nod for that Blue Things CD on Rewind ... Excellent
sound and packaging, and lotsa great tunes, from their early folk rock stuff
which is like the Beau Brummels and Byrds, Dylan, early Beatles and
Searchers, up to their later psych stuff like " Orange Rooftop of Your Mind "
which is still a fave.
That Long Ryders " Anthology " on Chronicles is a solid collection too ...
neat notes n' pix, great sound, and features a lot of great material ... "
10-5-60 "," Masters of War " (tho' I'm still kiunda partial to the Talismen's
version ). The Long Ryders, like the Blue - Things, definately require
checking out ...
and that Byrds " Preflyte " set on Sundazed is incredible ... unbelievable
beautiful packaging, that includes 2 neat postcards of Byrds songbooks, and
really detailed notes, along with great sound and some amazing music ... one
of my top ten re-issues of the past year !!! back to fighting with the
printer ... maureen

I love "It's About Time", don't care much for the Rhino LP or any of the
stuff after that.

Well, at two CDs worth of material that must have taken you all of an hour
and a half! Much as Jesse is a strong guitarist and frontman his original
material does not always kncok me out. He would have gone further if he'd
have been prepared to collaborate with another writer. Btw has Jesse seen

I quoted the address for Netsounds on the list last week. Get digging
through last weeks archive or visit The Garage and then head for the Online
Stores section. You will find details for plenty of other UK based retail
sites too. You might also want to check out Up-Front Records as I know the

British Pop Stars of the '80s Fall on Hard Times
By Jason Hopps

LONDON (Reuters) - Times are terrible for British pop
stars who hit it big in the 1980s.

Only months before the kick-off of a ''New Romantic''
tour that threatens to revive shoulder pads and
flicked fringes, one singer billed for the reunion
concerts was committed to a mental asylum and others
were embroiled in a legal dispute.

If that's not bad enough, yet another big-name British
chart-topper during the decade when the moonwalk and
acid-wash jeans were popular appeared in court
Wednesday charged with drunken driving.

British newspapers splashed banner headlines Wednesday
that Adam Ant -- a flamboyant star famed for hits
''Stand and Deliver'' and ''Goody Two Shoes'' -- was
committed to a psychiatric ward following an arrest
for the possession of a firearm.

The Sun newspaper said the singer, a headline act for
April's ''Here & Now Tour 2002,'' called its staff
from the secure ward where he is held and insisted:
''I'm not mad. They've put me in the Alice in
Wonderland ward because they think I'm crazy.''

Meanwhile, former members of Spandau Ballet, spinners
of mega-selling lush romantic ballads and rivals to
Duran Duran in their day, could be heading back to
court in a tussle over use of the band's name.

Newspapers reported that Gary Kemp and the band's
original manager are suing Tony Hadley to block him
from using the band's name for the April tour,
scheduled to swing across Britain.

A spokeswoman for the Here & Now tour, which also
features Belinda Carlisle from the Go Go's, Howard
Jones and ABC, said the show would go on:

''We're not making any changes to the current line-up
and the concert is going ahead as planned at this
moment,'' the spokeswoman told Reuters.

Dark headlines for some of the 1980s brightest stars
- -- Adam Ant wracked up 15 top 10 hits in the UK --
follow a spate of high-profile arrests and convictions
of other top-selling 80s pop heroes.

Former ''glam rock'' star Gary Glitter served half of
a four-month sentence in 2000 for collecting hard-core
child pornography and received death threats while in
prison.

Pop impresario Jonathan King, who topped the charts
and discovered several acts including Genesis and
10cc, was jailed for seven years last November for
having sexually abused teenage boys.

And Welsh rock 'n' roller Shakin' Stevens, one of
Britain's biggest male solo acts in the 1980s,
appeared in an English court Wednesday charged with
drinking and driving following his early morning
arrest on New Year's Day.

But it's not all doom and gloom for British stars who
once battled Madonna (news - web sites) and Michael
Jackson for pop supremacy. Boy George has triumphantly
returned to the limelight with his West End musical
''Taboo,'' a show featuring 16 new songs written by
the former Culture Club lead singer.

Greetings,

I remember the commercial of both the Del Fuegos and the
Long Ryders. It was great watching MTV in the afternoons
back in 1985 & 86 seeing these commercials.

My favorite two songs by them are are "Too Close to the
Light" and "Two Kinds of Love." I could almost swear that
it could be the Byrds.

NOTE: Thank you all for this listserve. It is most gratifying
to find out that there are people with an exact similar musical
mindset, as opposed to the generic interest of alternative
rock. This listserve allowed me to be able to buy a CD and
hear a live performance from the Mockers. It also allowed
me to be able to finally purchase a Farfisa Organ, due to
Jason Gentry's post on the Bomp List last week.

Cheers,

Boy am I slow in responding...

The Ted Lyons & His Cubs clip is what they show in Ghost World. It's
fantastic. The singer (Ted?) is amazing. He's got this great pencil
moustache a la John Waters and his dental work leaves something to be
desired but it only adds to the, uh, "atmosphere" of the number. And
the choreography looks like it was based on the Jet Screamer episode of
the Jetsons. You could pull a neck muscle with all that head shaking.

Prepare to be bludgeoned by a blowout of babes, booze and balls out rock

'cause it's almost time for...

SLEAZEFEST WEST
Sponsored By the San Francisco Bay Guardian
An institution for those who should likely be institutionalized!

Friday, Saturday and Sunday February 15- 17 The Bottom of The Hill
1233 17th St. (17th @ Missouri) San Francisco, CA

Born in 1993, this unholy concoction of bands, beer, fried chicken,
sweat and BBQ Baptismals immediately took on a life of it's own, quickly
becoming the event of the summer for thousands across the Southeast (and
beyond.)

Sleazefest is the brainchild of the former owners of the legendary Local
506 nightclub in Chapel Hill, NC and Rick Miller (Southern Culture on
the Skids.) While the club was sold in August of 2001, their spawn is
set to live on, so for it's 9th birthday, we've decided to give the kid
a trip across the nation and bring the madness west. Frankly, not even
that big ass bay will be enough to wash away the sins it will inspire.
In addition to the diverse mix of garage, punk and psychobilly bands,
we're bringing other highlights from this continually sold out event.
Jump in, lock down and show off your goods in the Go-Go Cage and be sure
to enter our annual contest for King and Queen of Sleaze...

Ronnie Dawson, Southern Culture on The Skids, The Fleshtones, Man... Or
Astroman, Nashville Pussy, The Quadrajets, Whiskeytown, Nine Pound
Hammer and Drive-By Truckers are just a few of the bands who have laid
crowds to waste during this three day extravaganza of debauchery. This
year's line up features bands from all over the nation and we expect to
continue this grand tradition of no holds barred rock and roll.

So strap on your chaps, bust out the garter belts, button on the
bustier, and have no fear, you'll be in baaaaad company!

Advance tickets available NOW via Ticketweb (credit card only,
866-468-3399 or http://www.ticketweb.com ) and at the club day of show
only. Tickets are $25 per night or $65 for a weekend pass, what a
bargain!

To this day, my mother believes that NYC after dark is
the reality that is portrayed in "The Warriors".

That, and that C.H.U.D.s live in the subways.

Subject: Garage & Psychobilly Festival Concerns...

Greetings,

I know and regret that Sleazefest will not be in Chapel Hill, NC (which is
only an hour drive from my house) anymore. If I understand correctly,
there will not be anymore Cavestomp.

Well then, are there any other festival with an emphasis on either
garage, rockabilly, surf rock, or combination of the mentioned
genres? If any of y'all can help me out on any festivals near North
Carolina from Maine down to Florida, I'll appreciate it.

Many Thanks,
Melvin Little

not sure if anyone saw this or not, but since the coen brothers are a hot
topic around here now, thought i'd put it up:

12/10/01 - Japanese woman dies hunting for 'Fargo' treasure in U.S.

WASHINGTON, Dec 10, 2001 (Kyodo via COMTEX) -- A Japanese woman whose body
was found Nov. 15 by a hunter in a forest in western Minnesota was
apparently obsessed with fictional buried treasure depicted in the movie
"Fargo," the local media reported.
The media quoted the local police as saying that they had earlier questioned
the woman, a 28-year-old from Tokyo, after she was found Nov. 10 at a
landfill site in Bismarck in neighboring North Dakota.

She told the police that she had come to search for the buried money from
the 1996 film and showed them a crude treasure map she had drawn based on
the film, in which a character takes ransom money and buries it.

The woman is believed to have then traveled to the film's location, the town
of Fargo, also in North Dakota, and searched for the buried ransom.

She may had died from exposure to the cold as she was dressed lightly, the
police said.

The police said there is no suspicion of a crime as the woman's body showed
no sign of injuries.

The woman entered the United States in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Nov. 7,
according to combined reports from the local police, the Japanese consulate
in Chicago and the media.

The Japanese consulate declined to identify the woman.

I'd say yeah, pick it up, although I gotta admit I don't listen to it much,
it was one of those things I picked up when buying a bunch of stuff so I
haven't given it that good of a listen. It definately has some good stuff on
it though.

My attempt at 2 cents,
Tommy

It's almost as good as FREE DIRT and better than most of the later stuff.
"Mirror Blues" is terrific and so is "Desperate Hours".

Melissa and I listened to Died Pretty quite a bit when we first started
dating. "Blue Sky Day" is still one of her favorite songs. I always
prefered "Stoneage Cinderella".

No wonder not even Robert Plant likes the song.

Subject: Died Pretty

I'd say the best Died Pretty records came out in the 1980s on Citadel
(Closer/What Goes On? abroad).
The "Pre Deity" comp collects the early singles.

This is 1980s Australian rock n'roll at its best and most crucial. Their
sound is dark and moody, yet positively melodic, revolving around hypnotic
organ grooves, screeching shards of guitar, and tremendously passionate
vocals. As for their influences, first-album Velvet Underground, "Blonde On
Blonde"-era Bob Dylan, Neil Young w/ Crazy Horse, early Pere Ubu and
Television are often cited, as well as 1960s psychedelia.

Two early LP masterpieces are "Free Dirt" (1986) and "Lost" (1989), both
produced by Rob Younger/engineered by Alan Thorne.

For a complete picture of the Australian rock n'roll scene, I cannot
recommend these albums and singles enough.

Dig,

Crawdaddy Simon
