i really dug "lost" and "every brilliant eve" -- i also thought "doughboy
hollow" was pretty good. their earlier stuff didn't do much for me.

i've found that "lost" and "every brilliant eve" are great to listen to all
the way through on long drives (which you get a lot of if you live in TX).

Ah, Del Fuegos. Another memory-jogging!

I have fond remembrances of "Del-Friday" in April of '84.....the day the
first Del Fuegos AND the first Del Lords LPs came out. That was a good day.

Warriors.... come out and plaaayyyyy....

I think the Warriors and CHUDs were pushed out by Guilianni and replaced by
Disney characters in midtown.

Either way - it's still scary.

Adam Ant Committed After Meltdown

Adam Ant, he of goofy pirate outfits and endless
choruses of "Goody Two Shoes," has been
institutionalized after a bizarre bar meltdown over
the weekend.

Ant, whose real name is Stuart Goddard, was committed
to the psychiatric ward of London's Royal Free
Hospital on Monday, police say. Two days earlier, the
Antman was arrested after allegedly snapping at a bar
and waving a pistol at another patron.

"They've put me in the Alice in Wonderland ward
because they think I'm crazy," Ant is quoted as
telling Britain's Sun tabloid in a phone interview.

"They've sectioned me--I've been here all night. The
whole thing's a conspiracy and they're just out to get
me. I'm not mad."

The 47-year-old Ant was taken into police custody and
charged Sunday after a scuffle with another
fortysomething man at the Prince of Wales pub in North
London. The exact nature of the confrontation is still
sketchy. Initial reports said Ant threatened to open
fire after being turned away from a private party.
However, London's Mirror now says Ant was going after
the man because he made threats against the rocker's
four-year-old daughter.

Ant was rung up on charges of possession of a firearm
or imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of
violence and with criminal damage and assault. Police
had him institutionalized Monday night after receiving
a call expressing concern over Ant's safety--relatives
were reportedly worried he might be suicidal.

The singer was scheduled to appear in Highbury
Magistrates Court on Friday, but that date will likely
get pushed back.

Under Britain's Mental Health Act, doctors will be
able to hold Ant for 28 days while they assess his
condition.

Ant has battled depression over the years--purportedly
made worse following the downturn of his career. He
reportedly had his first breakdown at the age of 21
and In the early '90s, he spent three months in a
clinic after another bout of depression. And last year
he suffered yet another nervous breakdown.

After failing to find success as a punk band in the
late '70s, Adam and the Ants (with an assist from Sex
Pistols impresario Malcolm McLaren) reinvented
themselves as glam rockers, slapping on makeup and
funny suits and scoring a string of hits, including
"Stand and Deliver" and "Prince Charming." Adam
ditched the Ants for a solo career, topping the charts
with "Goody Two Shoes" in 1982 before losing his
hitmaking touch. An attempt at an acting career never
took off and he went back to recording, releasing the
would-be comeback album Wonderful in 1995.

He was slated to re-don his vintage highwayman suit
and stage an oldies tour of Britain with other '80s
pop relics this spring.

Subject: work life and fun life collide again

So Saturday night, Jahna and I were on our way to that Purple Wizard/Lyres'
gig at Club Luxx in Brooklyn... I found myself stopped at a red light on the
Bowery, waiting to make a left on Delancey to head to the Williamsburg
Bridge. Three guys around 20 cross in front of my car, one with long blond
hair. He looks familiar... Uh-huh... Yup. So I roll down my window as he
gets to the other side and yell out a last name. It was one of my
ex-students, who had graduated 2 years back. Now, I know De is pretty into
music, so I had a pretty good feeling he was probably heading to the Bowery
Ballroom.

Late in the school day today, who knocks on my door, but De himself. I ask
him where he was heading at the time (The Realistics at the Bowery) and he
asked me. I told him. He said, "Oh, we've been compared to them." Now, I
figured he was talking about a local band called The Liars. "No, I know who
you're talkin' about. Some writer said we sounded like a cross between The
Lyres and The Makers." (What's kinda cool is he remembered me playing
_Howl_ for him years ago.)

Then he hands me a CD. What CD? "The Best of Little Steven's Cavestomp
Garage Rock Band Search: Volume I". Why? 'Cuz his band, Clover, is on it.
I'm still flipped out over that one. Psyched, actually. OK, I don't like
every one of their songs he's played me, but there are a few I really like,
including one that's on their MP3.com page
(http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/24/clover.html) called "She's Got The Fix".
Funny thing is, I remember a version of this that was more Lookout-punk than
this one. And I like this one better, 'cuz it's got a real rock'n'roll
keyboard part and it's revved better, but still keeps the lead vocal I like,
as well as the melody that captured me in the first place. The song on the
Cavestomp... disc is pretty good, if a little long. But it's got a keyboard
sound that reminds me of certain Beatle bits. (This doesn't surprise me
'cuz I remember either him or their then-bassist coming into class the
Monday after Beatlefest at the Meadowlands one year to tell me they'd won
the band contest, though they weren't using their regular name.)

Anyway, now I'm gonna go out and buy the Cavestomp disc... I already have
the tracks by The Mockers and Muck & the Mires, but I'll be glad to have
stuff by The Deadites and Purple Wizard. PLUS a ton of other bands that
I'll get to hear. (And a couple of them are from pretty damn close by.)
Besides, it's only 9 bucks.

The Furies may have been pussies, but pound for pound, the Orphans were the
biggest pussies. That girl gang had some evil potential.

If my memory serves me right, somebody in the suburbs of Boston got held
captive in a van and got a couple of fingers cut off by some kids saying that
they were the Warriors and "you're on your death ride".

What was the Joe Walsh song in that movie, was it In The City or At The
Station? I can't remember.

Think anybody's gonna show up to a Clover gig expecting to see Huey Lewis and
his old cronies.

Bomp worthy mention: Huey Lewis' Clover was the backup group on Elvis
Costello's My Aim Is True.

Maybe they should change their moniker to Clover Jr.

<grin> I actually mentioned that Clover had been used (not to mention
'The Clovers') not long after they formed the band. They didn't seem to
care. Hard to blame them, considering how many times many other band names
have been used.

It was In the City. (the movie's now available on DVD, though it's on the
higher end of the price spectrum and the only extra is the trailer).

p.s. Here's what our old friends at AMG had to say about the soundtrack:
"Shot on location in and around New York City's grimy night-time subways,
flaunting a virile cast of unknowns, Warriors remains a '70s cult favorite,
featuring violent gang warfare and a perfectly matched movie score. Barry De
Vorzon's bone chilling compositions envelop hard rock and sub-disco funk with
gritty apocalyptic urge. Conjuring strange film images, "Theme From
Warriors," "The Fight," and "Baseball Furies Chase" are testosterone-laden
instrumentals, combining sinister guitars and plodding drum work peppered
with creepy sounding keyboards. Adding laid-back soul texture is a smooth
Mandrill rarity, "Echoes in My Mind", highlighting solid bass lines popping
over funky horns and catchy vocals. "In Havana," performed by Kenny Vance
with Ismael Miranda, boasts deep-cut ethnic spicing and seamy horn-work
dressed in easy rhythms. Memorable audio clips from the mysterious female DJ
informing rival factions of the Warriors' brutal clashes are placed between
tracks, as well as the infamous battle cry complete with clacking beer
bottles, "Warriors...ome out to play-aay!" The film's exhausting conclusion
is forever cemented to Joe Walsh's desperate survival anthem "In the City",
as our heroes walk triumphantly into a dreary Coney Island sunrise. This dark
slice of pop culture was available only on vinyl sources until 1995, when
Polygram International released an import version on compact disc. â€" Craig

aren't unfounded either, with their reverb-drenched
