Lou Pearlman: Making The Archies
Justin, JC and Lance, meet your newest competition: Archie, Jughead and
Veronica.

That's right, the man behind such pop creations as the Backstreet Boys (news
- - web sites), 'N Sync (news - web sites) and O-Town is moving onto a
different type of two-dimensional character: Boy-band mogul Lou Pearlman
says he's teaming up with Archie Entertainment to launch real-life music
groups based on The Archies and Josie and the Pussycats comic books.

With the help of former BMG President Strauss Zelnick, Pearlman's Trans
Continental Entertainment is staging a nationwide search for young musicians
to become the next Archie, Jughead, Veronica and Betty, in preparation for a
new album, tour and TV show based on Riverdale High's finest rockers.

"We're going to bring Archie into the next century," Pearlman tells E!
Online. "Musically, it's going to capture today's pop-culture market...The
Archies will be able to tour, and I think it will be tremendous."

Specifically, Pearlman's hunting for young people who can sing, dance and
play their own instruments for the new project, which he describes as "more
contemporary pop and pop-rock." (And yes, "if they do look like Archie and
Jughead that would help," he adds.)

The talent search is one of several projects being launched this year by
Archie Entertainment to help celebrate the comic book's 60-year anniversary.

Of course, if this all sounds oddly familiar, it should: The Archies, first
introduced in the 1940s, were already turned into a hit cartoon and
chart-topping band in the late 1960s, appearing on CBS and scoring a number
one hit with the song "Sugar, Sugar." Thanks to a group of studio musicians
enlisted by '60s bubblegum pop mogul Don Kirshner, the Archies' catchy,
saccharine-friendly tune sold six million copies and even knocked the
Rolling Stones off the top of the charts.

While some might fear that Lou Pearlman is now poised to turn the Archies
into, say, R-Town, at least one of the original band members says he
supports the idea.

"I know Lou Pearlman...and I think they'll do a real good job," says Ron
Dante, the L.A.-based singer-producer who originally sang Archies hits like
"Sugar, Sugar" and "Jingle Jangle" during the band's cartoon heyday.

"It was a good job for me at the time, and I couldn't be happier that people
connected with it," Dante says. "Archie, Reggie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead
are good role models, and the country could use a little good, positive pop
music right now with all the terrible things we've been through."

For his part, Pearlman says he plans to ask Dante to be involved with the
creation of this latest Archies incarnation. It's only appropriate
considering one of the new group's first priorities will be recording a
remake of 1969's chart-topper "Sugar, Sugar."

As for Josie and the Pussycats, Pearlman says he also will be searching for
girls to lead that band. The timing isn't exactly perfect: Last year's movie
version of the comic book scored decent reviews for its pop-punk soundtrack,
but the film starring Rachael Leigh Cook and Tara Reid bombed at the box
office.

Pearlman, however, says this latest version of the Pussycats will be more
"Spice Girls (news - web sites)-meets-Britney Spears."

"I think [the makers of the film] were more interested in making a movie,
and we're more interested in making a show and music that will last," he
says.

So Saturday night, Jahna and I were on our way to that Purple Wizard/Lyres'

Bowery, waiting to make a left on Delancey to head to the Williamsburg
Bridge. Three guys around 20 cross in front of my car, one with long blond
hair. He looks familiar... Uh-huh... Yup. So I roll down my window as he
gets to the other side and yell out a last name. It was one of my
ex-students, who had graduated 2 years back. Now, I know De is pretty into

It looks like hard rocker and horror film soundtrack

ADVENTURES OF OZZIE AND HARRIET has gone before. That
is, getting his own sitcom.

It seems MTV will be bringing to viewers THE
OSBOURNES, a weekly reality 'sitcom' which will follow
the daily grind of Ozzie, his wife Sharon, and their
16 and 17 year old kids.

Billed by the network, no doubt at the Oz's prompting,
as "THE COSBY SHOW from Hell" the show debuts March 5

with all the different opinions on Died Pretty flying around, I actually
listened to some. I had a tape of Every Brilliant Eye I didn't even remember

prefer the sparser production on that record. Haven't heard Doughboy Hollow,
I guess it would be fun to find.

that's one of the things I miss about the 80s: guitar bands. Not garage
bands but guitar bands like Dream Syndicate and Died Pretty. The Gun Club,
maybe. the last band I can think of that made a big noise in that genre (if
you can call it a genre) is Afghan Whigs.

Actually I would probably be impatient with that kind of music if it were
coming out now but that's what I wanted to do back then.

Thanks for all the information on Come See Me (isn't the Internet

The Cannibals version is one of my all time favourite tracks. I
bought the Breast of the Cannibals but there was nothing quite as
exciting. I guess Mike Spenser original albums will have some
great stuff. He covered "Good Times" by Nobodies Children I think
(has anyone ever found out exactly who this Texan Band were?). I
would certainly be up for getting some more Cannibals although
everything sounds like a lot.

Greetings,

Do you know how one can dress garage cheaply? It is frustrating
shopping for suits. It is easy to find the three button jackets with
the skinny lapels. I have the skinny neck ties from the 1980s.
I have my problems mostly with jeans, slcks, and trousers. I
hate to wear flares and bell bottoms. What I ty doing is to buy
pants that are non pleated in the front. Take the pants to a
professional tailor and have the tailor taper the legs in the
bottom. It gives my Beatle Boots character, when I do this.

Are there any clothing shops that specialize in sixties mod
clothes? The reason I'm asking is that I'm in a band, that is
currently lacking a drummer. We want to dress like in the
1965--66 style, which includes three button suits, neatly
combed Beatle haircuts, and of course Beatle Boots.
We want to be as authenic as the Chesterfield Kings
and the Vipers were in the 1980s and currently with
bands like Tee and the Crumpets and the Embrooks
from today.

If I'm not mistaken, the whole movie "O Brother Where
Art Thou?" was meant to be a Depression-era rewrite of
"The Odyssey." It was just by accident that it turned
out to be a little more than a two-hour video for what
is still the number one country album in America... I
wonder how the followup album, "Down From The
Mountain" (live recordings from some of the "O
Brother" musicians) is doing? From what I can tell, it
has few songs from the movie, and is the movie really
turning as many people on to old-time music as they
say it is?

Incidentally, the title of the movie comes from a
fictional movie title in perhaps one of the most
underrated films to come out of the '30s, "Sullivan's
Travels." It is the movie that the lead character
wants to make because he doesn't think the Depression
is a good time to make his usual musical comedies. He
never makes it, of course, after a series of
unfortunate events convinces him that laughter is the
best medicine... Quite a stirring film.

As for the Long Ryders, evidence is sufficient enough
to warrant my tracking the Anthology down. I have the
Western Electic album, Sid Griffin's newest
post-Ryders project. It's in line with most of the
best alt-country albums, with some studio trickery and
sampling. A couple of Byrds-like moments, none more
obvious than a Gene Clark song sung by guest vocalist
Robyn Hitchcock. Of course, I'm sure there are more
than a few Long Ryders-like moments on the album too,
but I'm sure I wouldn't know...

That's truly sad, though, a case of fan fascination gone terribly awry.
This reminds me of the stories I heard about Japanese fans of the show Twin

highlight was having their picture taken wrapped in a plastic tarp next to

IMHO the best thing that Jesse has EVER done is the Clawfist 45 (Leavin'
Town b/w I Need Lovin') from the early nineties. Not only did he have a
good Power Pop rhythm section but the songs are seriously good too. Too
bad that he could not maintain the momentum and had to go and fall out with
those talented youngsters. Such potential.

O, and mine's an 'alf cider, Col'!

Don't know where it's from but it isn't all psych.

    hey lee -
here's the track list for volume 3

1. the anteeeks - i don't want you
2. kippington lodge - i can see her face
3. fire - man in the teapot
4. mandrake - len
5. glass menagerie - somebody to love
6. now - marcia
7. smoke - utterly simple
8. orange machine - dr. crippen's waiting room
9. barrier - dawn breaks through
10. ron grainer orchestra - boy meets girl
11. factory - castle on a hill
12. jigsaw - seven fishes
13. team dokas - 60 million megaton sunset
14. tales of justine - sitting on a blunestone
15. difference - sweet sounds everywhere
16. nimrod - don't let it get the best of you
17. blue effect - sun is so bright
18. the scene - scenes (from another world)
19. white trash - illusions
20. unknown - out of my mind (over you)
21. flames - mod trad
22. nashville teens - i'm a lonely one
23. mirage - i see the rain
24. matadors - don't bother me
25. unknown - mr. paradise
26. george bean - floatin
27. majority - time machine man

i think this is a pretty schizo volume -what's good is fantastically superb,
what's bad is uh, well....BAD. in the former category, we have pete dello's
pre-honeybus outfit the anteeeks with some cool freakbeat, fire's great
popsike "man in the teapot," the smoke's neat cover of traffic's "utterly
simple," the ron grainer orchestra's "boy meets girl" (not really psych, but
very cool to have if you dig the paper blitz tissue's version available on
"chocolate soup') and tales of justine's great "sitting on a blunestone." the
unknown acetate of "out of my mind (over you)" is pretty kick-ass too, kinda
reminds me of "stroll on" era yardbirds.

in the latter category, there's the god-fuckin-awful "marcia" by now, and a
host of forgettably generic sludgy 1970-sounding stuff that doesn't sound
much like psych to me...i'll spare you the details!

all in all though, this is one of those comps you need for the good stuff -
the good stuff on here is that good.
