anybody else been digging the new nederbeat box? damn, this thing is a
score - four discs of r&b, beat, mod, psych, pop & some just plain old
weirdness & an extra disc of rarities. the thing is set up in one of those
"zombie heaven" style book-style boxes, with a thick book on the spine.
there were some major ommissions to this set, at least from my personal
favorite list: Q65's "so high i've been , so down i must fall," the jay-jay's
"i'll keep trying," the zipps' "marie juana," and there's nothing from the
awesome studio side of the first outsiders LP ("won't you listen" would have
been great.) also, i don't know for sure, but it sounds to me like shocking
blue's "venus" is on here in some kinda mono-reprocessed-for-stereo or
something like that...if not, it's a really crummy mix anyway, very out of
balance, sounds like 80% of the song is coming outta the right channel...
but the good on this far outweighs anything bad - the sound is overall
pretty good (though some tracks were mastered from occasionally noisy vinyl),
the book is gorgeous, there are TONs of reproduced picture sleeves...the
liners are in dutch only, though (anybody know if there's an online
translation somewhere? if not, is there any way of talking any dutch bompers
<jan, jeroen, bink...anyone, anyone?> into doing some translating?) there are
a shit load of notes, but any translations at all would be much appreciated.
both of the tracks by HET are freakin awesome - "ik heb geen zin om op te
staan" and "kejje nagaan" (by the way - what do those titles mean?)...i am
also digging the bintangs "ridin on the L&N," the hunters "russian spy & i"
(a big favorite from an old pebbles volume) and brainbox's "down man." very
cool stuff....highly recommended....

Personally, I don't care whether they use it or not, although I agreed
that it's been used. However, there've been many bands that have used
various names (some even at the same time; some who even had it first and
lost it to a band that became famous.)

    Yep. Park Ridge, NJ.

I saw them a couple times when they were in high school, playing the
PRHS version of a variety show (called the "Popcert".) They were the best
part every time out.

Yep,

I got this one. I think it's excellent and for some reason it was really
cheap too.
Even considering the cool tracks missing it's pretty awesome introduction
to nederbeat.
Since I don't have too much of Dutch stuff (only the big names,
Q65,Outsiders, Motions etc
+dutch pebbles)this was a great buy for me.

You could pick worse places to learn about music than from Thee Crumpets and
The Embrooks. (though I've always thought sounding too sixties held the
first back)

Now that I think about it, I don't remember Paul Sheridan as having an
authentic garage look. Granted, when Tee's around I tend not to notice much
else, but still...

I've seriously thought about organizing a garage fest here in St. Louis. Good central location, decent local scene, I've made lots of band/label contacts from doing the radio show and 'zine, and I know of a fantastic ballroom where it could be held (www.casalomaballroom.com), but the logistics of organizing it (not to mention the costs involved) scare the hell out of me. I don't know... has anyone else on this list ever tried doing one of these things? I can imagine it must take at least SOME amount of advance money or financial backing in order to book the bands, secure the venue, print tickets and brochures/flyers, etc.

There's a monthly club called Skadrophenia that caters to 60's rocksteady, ska, garage and soul sounds that has been going on for awhile. It's difficult however, to convince US hipsters to make the trek down there especially since the WTC incident. The lines coming back if you're walking are insanely long. Driving over and back is okay though, but few people want to attempt this. Despite that, the club has done well and attracts a large number of local Mexican 60's fans. The club has led to larger events further south but nothing of a weekend.
I go down there a lot (about an hour south of TJ) and it is very cheap, with beautiful beaches and excellent seafood (lobster mainly).
I think getting the venue and hotels together would be very easy as the Mexican people are easy to negotiate with, however whether people would take the risk and attend is another story. Bands taking their own equipment down there is also a touchy situation; some groups simply don't want to avoid the hassle.
It's a great idea though and would be an insane weekend. It would be a great summer event.
I think even doing it in Tijuana would be crazy. Although I have yet to find a decent motel/hotel there.

Yeah, I know. It was a joke. Ever hear of a band from Kansas City that was called Cher? They had to change their name, for obvious reasons, and chose Cher UK. Then, more recently, there was a band here in St. Louis called The Noble Gases, but found out someone else was already using that name, so they changed their name to Thee Noble Gases UK. But now that you mention it, how 'bout Cloveur?

I'm thinking a heavy Gang of Floor influence, mixed
with Malcolm McLaren-era New York Dolls.

The similar figure in the Odyssey is Homer, the author.

Stand back as loose-cannon Contrarian Aaron assails your ears and anything in his

Cambridge cabaret. Ex-Morning Shake Jose will rip through 60s riffs with an array

What was it Colin, tryin' the drag me into some Wilko versus Mick

I generally agree with you guys on Jesse as a songwriter, obviously
not his strongest point. Never really cared for the Raw LP myself,
bought it back in the day and quickly traded it back in, tried again
with the CD reissue (apparently Damaged Goods' worst seller ever!)
but still didn't like it. For what it's worth; here's the data from the
O.N. files on Jesse;

Jesse Hector And The Rock 'n Roll Trio - EP. (No Hit 7" EP, 199?).
- -Recorded in 1961, released in the late 90s).
Clique - privately pressed EP. (?)
Clique - She Ain't No Good/Time Time Time (Pye 7N 15786, 1965).
Clique - We Didn't Kiss Didn't Love But Now We Do/You've Been
- -Unfair (Pye 7N 15853, 1965).
Crushed Butler - Uncrushed (Dig The Fuzz 10", 1998).
- -Recorded between 1969 and 1971, released in 1998).
Hammersmith Gorillas - You Really Got Me/Leavin 'Ome (Penny
- -Farting BF 18271, 1974). Reissued as Raw 2 in 1977 and as
- -Belter 06-136 in Portugal (also from '77).
Gorillas - She's My Gal/'Till Tomorrow (Chiswick S4, 1976).
Gorillas - Gatecrasher/Gorilla Got Me (Chiswick S8, 1977).
- -Reissued on Skydog (France) in '77 and in 2001 on Munster 7160
- -(Spain).
Gorillas - It's My Life/My Sons Alive (Raw 14, 1978).
Gorillas - Message To The Underworld (Raw LP 103, 1978).
- -Reissued on CD as Damaged Goods 48, 1994).
Gorillas - Move It/Song For Rita (Chiswick Chis 151, 1981).
Jesse Hector & The Sound - Leavin' Town/I Need Lovin' (Clawfist
- -15, 1992).
Jesse Hector & The Sound - Running Wild (on compilation EP free
- -w/ issue 17 of Hartbeat magazine from Germany, 1994).
Jesse Hector & The Gatecrashers - In My Soul (French split 7" w/ -
the Space Beatniks. Zombie Dance 04, 1996).
Hammersmith Gorillas - Gorilla Got Me (Chiswick CDWIKD 185,
- -199?).
Jesse Hector & The Gatecrashers - EP. (Rockin' House RCK 2,
- -1999 USA).

That's it. I'm slowly OD-ing on this pub rock stuff, spend last night
putting together a tape of the stuff for Kip (it's in the mail!), and right
now I'm gonna get me a nice glass o' wine and put on something
smooth and relaxin' like the Impressions, 'cause I've had just about
enough of gravel throated singers...

Cheers,

Jeroen

Hi Lee. There were at least 4 volumes of the Psychedelia series.
Hen's Teeth vol. 3 compiles volumes 3 and 4 of psychedelia except
for one track, apparently-"Prelude and the Marble Steps" by Steerpike.
Maybe Rob skipped that one by accident or maybe it was left off the
cd for some reason. Rob's description sounds about right from what
I remember. Some lame stuff but a must for the good ones. The missing
track is very psychy but mellow w/hvy vocal effects. It's like The Moles
of "We Are The Moles" on qualudes. Thanks for mentioning the Hen's
Teeth series. Now I know I have a lot of it already. Dr. Mindburger

nope - i just double checked & it's definitely not on my CD - maybe this
was left off for space reasons?? is it a long track? just kind of wondering...

Funny you mention it....

We're gonna start our own trend "lumberjack psychedelic power pop".
I think we're gonna sell Canadian Bacon at the merch stand at our upcoming
gigs too.

The next CD will probably be called "Our music is PLAID with BLUE Touques".

I cut down trees, I eat my lunch, and listen to Syd Barrett.

Joking aside - we're taking some time off at the moment, as Jim (our lead
guitarist) had his appendix out last weekend. We're working on new
material for a new CD that we're hoping to record some time in the
summer/fall.

Also - we've sold out of the first pressing of COLOURSOUND , and are about
to have a second pressing done.

We'll be playing out again in March.
