"Diggin' for Gold" band Bain Didonc used to be called the Pitles. I also
remember reading about a band called Elvis Presley & the Beatles a couple of
decades ago but may be it was just a joke, my memory's not clear.

Subject: Re: Janis Joplin & Big Brother 900 Nights Video / Combination Of The Two

I've got that DVD, picked it up brand new and sealed fer 15 bucks just a
week or so ago ... Definately a pretty neat DVD ... it does have "
Combination of the Two ", but again after the first verse they start cutting
into it with recent interviews with the band. These are actually pretty good
bits about how the band and the other San Francisco bands were leery of the
whole Monterey Pop Fest , thinking ( and quite rightly ), that it was a bit
of a scam by John Phillips and Lou Adler to package and market the whole "
San Francisco Scene " , into a dayglo commercial and marketable package for
the masses, and make the Mamas and Papas appear to be more hip ( or at least
the kings and queens of hip ) than they were, and to make a film for profit
later, some of this is mentioned in greater detail the " Monterey Pop " book
by Joel Selvin, and how bands like Big Brother, the Who and Jimi Hendrix,
just stole the show from John Phillips, the Mamas and Papas, and John's
cronies.
Anyway, so again, it's not the complete performance of " Combination of
the Two " ... and yes it's the sunday performance ... I wonder if maybe
there's some flaky camera work in that section of the film, and maybe that's
why they always seem to start tossin' the interviews in there ...
Otherwise a pretty neat DVD ... a lotta material from the " Come Up the
Years " tv performance in '67 ( James Gurley looks so kool with that Les Paul
Jr ), neat stuff at their rehearsal hall, some Generation Club footage,
studio shenanigans while they were recording " Cheap Thrills ". Most of the
interview bits are actually really good and not of the typical " fluff " type
stuff one might expect ( the outtakes from the interviews, which are part of
the bonus " goodies " are especially good ). Other than the band, there's
great stuff from Lenny Kaye, and there's stuff from Nick Gravenites and Ellen
Willis as well. All the band come off real genuine and well in these
interview bits, with some real thought and insight in their comments, tho'
Albin looks kinda ridiculous in this sequin sparkly psychedelic shirt he's
wearing, and is it me or does he start to look like a psychedelicized bizzaro
world version of Kirkwood Smith as the interview progresses ???
Other bonus stuff includes 4 full performance clips ( no interviews or
picture montages etc ) 2 from the " Come Up the Years " tv performance, "
Ball and Chain " from Monterey , and " Piece of My Heart " from the
Generation Club. There's also a pic gallery of band photos and stuff and one
of posters, a rather silly " Timeline ", and an audio only track of " Hall of
the Mountain King " which has no visual, which is absolutely ludicrous
considering that this is a DVD, which is basically " a visual thing " ( hey
even a dumb montage of band pics through this woulda been kool ) and is also
nigh on impossible to get out of once you've started it. I should point out
that the darn disc doesn't seem to navigate in and out of the various bonus
sections real well, and it would be a whole hell of a lot more enjoyable if th
ey just let the extra interview stuff from each person run straight thru, so
you wouldn't have to hit next etc, after the end of each of their individual
various comments made, to start the next one, as that starts to become
somewhat tedious, oh hell it's just a GREAT BIG #*%*$% PAIN IN THEASS !!!
Definately worth getting tho' ... especially if you're into Janis and Big
Brother, and the interview outtakes are fulla lotsa neat stuff, especially
the guys in the band, I coulda listened to more from all 4 of 'em, and Lenny
Kaye as well, including some comments on " Combination of the Two " which you
might dig ... tho again, in answer to your actual question, once again, "
Combination of the Two " is chopped up.
how do you program this #$%&*%$# thing !!! maureen

A question...I understand there's a pretty recent Janis Joplin documentary
for sale on tape and DVD called 'Nine Hundred Nights.' The thing about it
that has me interested is that I have read that this set includes
'Combination Of The Two' from Monterey Pop. Does anyone have this new
documentary who can tell me whether the entire performance of this song is
included, or is it just a fragment of it?

You might recall back in 1997 on the 30th anniversary of Monterey, there was
a VH-1 special of outtakes, and they had this song, but they didn't show the
whole song...they cut out the second verse, and anyway they had modern
interviews with Monterey performers cut into the tune. I've always loved that
tune, as out of tune as the guitars may be, and a piece of that version is,
of course, the opening of the 'Monterey Pop' movie, but that too is chopped
down, in different places, and I'd love to hear the entire track. (The
Monterey Pop box set that Rhino put out in the early 1990's had 'Combination
Of The Two,' but the version included there was from her Saturday Monterey
set. The version heard over the opening credits was from her Sunday set,
which must also be the one on this DVD, since only her Sunday set was filmed.)

What was I talking about originally? Oh yeah, so if anyone has seen this new
video and can tell me if 'Combination Of The Two' is complete in it, I'd
appreciate it.

Thanks. >>

Hey Topus,

you might have to serve up a double dose, but I'm not throwing in the towel
just yet. I've heard alot of speculation so far about this band, but no one
has yet to provide any prrof as to who they are. Including the Big Takeover
review. I just read in Shindig that there might be an Optic Nerve
connection. By the way, thanks for the tip on the Hollies EP compilation,
it's all the stuff I like by them.

Saw the Strokes on Saturday Night Live last night,
with Jack Black ("High Fidelity," "Orange County,"
Tenacious D) as host. Having missed the Strokes in
Columbus their last time around, I figured this was
just as good a chance to see what they look like "in
action." Must say, that although I still think all the
songs on their album sound the same, I do like their
image. And "live" there's just a bit more kick to the
music.

Also enjoyed little bits of Jack Black's appearances.
Liked him in "High Fidelity," reminds me of someone I
went to college with. Planning to see "Orange County"
(as a girl told me when I said I wanted to see this:
"that doesn't surprise me, a goof movie for a
goof..."), anyone have any opinions on it? And what
about Tenacious D? What do people think of them?

Y'know, I don't know if anything came out - it was a demo tape that my friend
was reviewing, and at the time (1989) the word was that Enigma Records was
interested. Again, that was the first and last time I ever heard their name.
Unless they changed their name to something else...

Enigma Records - ha! Remember them? Long before the whole post-Nirvana
indie-rock revolution of the nineties, Enigma was supposed to represent
underground music's strongest shot at (or against) the mainstream. Seemed
like in the mid- to late-eighties, if a quirky artist looked like they were
breaking through, nine times out of ten they were with the Enigma family of
labels at one time or another. In that light, Enigma was like the Elektra or
Blue Thumb of the eighties - a semi-major label releasing weird music for a
commercial marketplace. I remember Billboard magazine even doing a whole
special issue on that label, around '86 or '87. If they lasted into the
so-called "grunge" era - BAM! - they woulda been on top of that scene like
ugly on an ape.

Who did they have on their roster? The Smithereens, Ben Vaughn, and the duo
of Mojo Nixon & Skid Roper are the ones that come to mind, mainly because
those were the ones I bought!! I know there were other significant artists
besides that, but the names escape me now. (Didn't the Pandoras record their
much-despised heavy metal album for the Enigma folks?) They were just heavy
enough that they struck up a deal with Capitol (to distribute their
Smithereens albums).

Here's a few off the top of my head that have either
been associated with Enigma at some point or have been
on a label distributed by Enigma (i.e. subsidiaries
such as Restless, Gasatanka, Pink Dust, Death,
Bemisbrain and I'm sure there were many others):

45 Grave, Fear (Restless), The Nip Drivers
(Bemisbrain), The Leaving Trains, John Trubee and the
Ugly Janitors of America, The Fiends (Bemisbrain),
28th Day (Restless, I think), The FUs (Gasatanka),
Redd Kross (they did an EP for Gasatanka before
departing to Big Time for their "Neurotica" LP,
Wednesday Week, Rain Parade, TSOL, The Leaving Trains
(the "Well Down Blue Highway" album...after that, it
was SST), The Wipers, The Lazy Cowgirls (first album
only), DRI (Death), The Ugly Americans (Death),
Corrosion of Conformity (Death), The Dead Milkmen
(first two on Restless, the rest on Enigma...before
Hollywood Records took them in the Nirvana-inspired
indie band signing frenzy of the early 90s), The
Fiends, Screamin' Sirens, The Pandoras, Electric
Peace, Yo, BPeople (posthumous compilation), Motley
Crue (first LP "Too Fast For Love" before it was
picked up by Elektra), The Flaming Lips (Pink Dust),
Berlin (first LP "Pleasure Victim" was picked up by
Geffen), Slayer (They were on Enigma's metal
subsidiary (can't remember the name offhand) and then
Def Jam took them in for "Reign In Blood"), Lizzie
Borden, Celtic Frost.........and let's not forget
Poison....or better yet, let's.

This is by no means a complete list, but each of the
bands listed had some connection to the Enigma empire.
I may be wrong on a few of them, but I distinctly
remember most of the bands having an Enigma inprint or
an imprint of an Enigma distributed label.

Oh yeah, The Dicks' "Kill from the Heart" was jointly
released by both Enigma and SST.

is this the same thing that came out on the rhino video years ago? the 30
minute black and white TV show filmed at KSAN? damn, that is a really cool
video. that band just - pardon the expression - SMOKED. total kick-ass outta
control hypercharged psychedelic garage rock. too bad the band don't get the
credit they deserve; in their own backyard, i think they could play - uh,
their own special way - circles around the grateful dead. gurley (wasn't he
called "weird jim gurley" by a lot of people? i seem to recall reading that
somewhere....if not, they should've called him that) is one my fave SF
geetar-slingers, sloppy as fuck and brilliant as hell. that version of "koo
koo" they do on the rhino video is fantastic...wacko outta tune vocals and a
shitload of garage energy. and "hall of the mountain king" is really great,
too...sort of a sloppier, cruder homegrown "interstellar overdrive."
i know a lot of people on this list don't dig janis too much, but i like
her. i don't care too much for the post-big bro stuff - but she was with big
brother, they were really, really good. big brutha kicked ass.
what's the deal on the post-janis 1970 big brother LP? anybody got any

No. The Steerpike track is average length for that comp. Dr. M.

I got the first volume way back when and thought about half
of it was ok and the other half kinda' sucked. Just not my style.
I like pop but not that pop. Taped half, sold the cd, dropped from
my catalog too. Too much esy listening crap for me. But that's me.
If you like it, enjoy it. Dr. M.

I just got in the mail, for no particular reason that I can discern (late
Christmas gift?) a copy my friend burned of a cd by Betty Serveert called
"Venus In Furs" which is indeed a cd full of Velvets covers... and geez, I'm
only a little ways into this, but so far, I gotta admit, it's GOOD.

I looked "Betty" up on the internet, but all I learned is that a previous
album droned more or less unmercifully--in fact, I found lukewarm to bad
press on three previous releases--and that Betty isn't a she but a they
(Betty Serveert means Betty Serves in--I think--Dutch, as in the title of a
Tennis Handbook, according to one write up).

I dunno, I'm only 4 songs into it, but hey, as Velvets covers go, these
ain't bad at ALL. So far.

check http://www.bettieserveert.com/ for more info but i'd say that first
matador album (palomine) is one of the things that really sold me on
matador...teenage fanclub is a close number two. bettie stove, the dutch
tennis player, is supposedly the one who wrote the manual that inspired the
name....but who cares?? tennis kinda blows...i'd rather listen to bettie
serve up some cool pop anyday. later

Indeed, indeed and indeed and thanx Jeroen! Still, I wish my teeth were the
only interference with translation jobs...

I'd go for "Go figure" as closest translation of "Kejje nagaan"... Bink?

>>Spat niet met pap,<<

Thanx again Jeroen, that'll be a problem after the reconstruction...

L8er,
