Greetings,

I am familiar with the Texas sound. I'm familiar with the Florida sound.
How about any scene in North Carolina? I know that the Swinging
Madelions from South Carolina that did "Double Shot of My Baby's
Love."

Where were the garage bands of North Carolina. Was there a
scene in Raleigh, Chapel Hill, Greensboro, Charlotte, Winston
Salem, or any other place in North Carolina?

Maybe a "Pebbles" compilation of the South would be a good
idea.

Cheers,
Melvin Little

There were 2 volumes of 'Tobacco a Go-go' released in the 80s, and they're
both worth picking up if you can find them. All I've ever found as far as
originals go are albums on Justice Records (from Winston Salem) by The
Varcels, The Stowaways and the Englishmen. Collectables (www.oldies.com) has
issued all 3 on cd as well as a number of others on the same label. Someone
else will have to fill you in on Raleigh or Charlotte, but I know there were
small labels in either city.

The Jesus and Satan boxing match song is called "The Champion" and is by a
creepy Christian named Carman. If you go to http://www.carman.org you can
find an mp3 with about two minutes of this masterpiece.

If no one beats me to it, I'll pull it out later and see which it sounds
like to me (and no, don't know what a Drell is), but I wanted to add to add
that the first line is actually a kinda classic gaffe. IIRC, it's actually,
"_I'm_ Archie Bell and the Drells..." which is a pretty neat trick if ya
think about it!

Yo I'm pretty sure it says "We can dance just as good as we walk."

Tighten Up easily one of my top 10 favorite songs. Tho I think the first
line's not a gaffe, Archie clearly comes in too early on the "We're gonna
make it mellow for ya" I think on the second time. He has to back up and
say "Okay, now, we're about to, we're gonna make it mellow for ya."

Finally, Drells trivia! Charlie Robinson, a Drell, went on to play Mac
Robinson, the bailiff on "Night Court." Yeow.

BTW, I've been lurking on this list for awhile but Hi, my name's Jay, I'm
a garage band in NYC called The Swains. We're gigging around NYC a lot
these days - info and mp3s at www.the-swains.net. Really glad to have
found my way onto the list among so many other like-minded folk...

go-go boots and a large collection of self-made 60's dresses that I dug

Congratulations, Melvin. You've truly outdone yourself.
Just amazing work. Now if you can just find the right trousers, you'll
be well on your way to fulfilling what we've always expected you'd one
day achieve: total domination of the socialist fashion garage rock
scene in Raleigh, North Carolina.

Just amazing.

Personally, I'd like to announce that I just ate a club sandwich and a
banana.
It was delicious.
Please forward all correspondence (congratulatory letters, keys to your

- -The line up includes Jim Schafer on Bass Guitar and Vocals.
- -Jason Quidley plays Guitar. Melvin Little (that's me) now plays

- -I am still interested in getting a Vox Continental Organ. If anyone

Subject: A question for all the organ fanatics on-list..

(...and when I say organ, I mean the kind you play, not the kind you play
WITH...)

Those old-fashioned organs with the knobs that gave you specific rhythms -
are those compatible with hip retro music like soul or garage? (Forget jazz,
you'd probably need an all out Hammond for that...) You know, those humongous
things from back in the day that looked like a piece of furniture? You see
these things used so often, you wonder: are those things funky enough for
rock 'n' soul, or do they have that hopelessly square "skating rink" sound?

When you go to thrift shops and the like, you always see these old-school
combo organs (is that what they're called?) from the 60's and 70's. You know,
the type they used to demonstrate at shopping malls all the time - you press
a button and you get a specific drum machine tempo, usually made by the likes
of Lowrey or Wurlitzer.

(I have a suspicion that this is what Timmy Thomas used on his 1972 hit, "Why
Can't We Live Together.")

Can you rock with those, too? Or are they minature versions of what you hear
in ballparks?

JP
P.S. Gotta put in a plug for those Cordovox accordians that got a fairly
accurate organ sound for the sixties. Guess they never caught on 'cause they
looked too corny for anyone not from Louisiana???

That recording of the the fight between Jesus and Satan sounds great. I
catagorize such Christian music as "agenda" rock. Not that they aren't
sincere, they are. That's what makes agenda rock interesting. I'd be
interested in getting a copy of that too. Some other examples of good agenda
rock are:

1) "The Pro Choice Choir" doing a concert at a NOW rally in Washington DC.
It was a few years back and I remember Toad The Wet Sprocket was playing
there too. Until I saw this I never thought there was worse music than bad
Christian Rock. The choir was complete with guys playing congo drums
(probably male women's studies majors). I'm trying to get a copy of that.

2) Read and was told about a CD of Amway rock. Has songs that motivate your
downline to sell!

3) The band Xit a native american rock band. Lots of songs with the phrase
"white man". The song "Christopher Columbus, that name makes me furious" is
something not to be missed. It kind sounds like a Talking Heads song.

Agenda Rock, a new catagory of music.

"Clearasil solemnity!" I like that term! Kinda like that scene in STAND BY ME

walks on his all-fours and barks like a real dog" (or something equally

Reminiscing with Maureen:

<< anyone remember
Mount Rushmore or Mint Tattoo ??? >>

What's the skinny on these two bands? Good or bad? These were obviously Dot
Records attempt at going "psychedelic," and Mint Tattoo either contributed
some members to, or stole some members from, Blue Cheer. Besides, I kinda
like the ham-fisted obviousness of the former's album title: HIGH ON MOUNT
RUSHMORE. The band, or the label, or whoever, were probably backslapping up a
storm over that one: "HIGH ON MOUNT RUSHMORE!! Get it!?! 'High on,' you hear
what I say? We're SO hip..."

<< superior command of one's instrument, doesn't always necessarily make
fer excitin' rock and / or rock n' roll ... I'll take a bunch of supposedly
"
musically inept clowns " like The Stooges, Blue Cheer and Big Brother any
day
of the week, over scores of their contemporaries. I tend to overlook
mistakes in favor of ( dare I say it ??? ) groove. >>

Go ahead and say it!! Some of the newer, stiffer punk drummers couldn't find
a groove if it was in their ass pocket!

The band Xit was fronted by a guy named Tommy Bee, who with his band the

Last year they introduced a new Grammy category, Native American Music, and

I always figured it was "want," myself. It would go a long way towards
answering the question:

<< what's a "Drell," anyway?? >>

According to an interview I saw with Bell in Discoveries magazine, years ago,
a "drell" is a well-rounded entertainer...someone who can sing or dance just
as good as they want (although, if you'll notice, they didn't get to do too
much singing on "Tighten Up," their biggest hit - they croon credibly on
their other records).

BTW, has anybody here seen that new book about the history of Atlantic
Records by Ahmet Ertegun. Considering the high cost and hefty physical size,
the text is pretty light, but the pix are worth it! The pix of Lou Reed
(Velvet Underground) and the MC 5 have been printed fairly often - they're
not uncommon - but there is an INSANE series of color shots featuring Archie
Bell & the Drells doin' the Tighten Up at a pool party! They must have been
lipsynching for a television show, since I don't see any microphones or a
backing band; the photo credits don't tell us much, either (some shit like
"courtesy of Atlantic Records!").

Let me put this hamburger down - I don't want no MALT - I just wanna "Do The

That's wacky!

I have two Geraldine and Ricky albums, and let me tell you, the covers with
her and that dummy are the most horrifying pictures you could ever show to
someone, much less a child.

Reminds me of the dummy in the commercial for the movie "Magic," which used
to scare the f*ck out of me.

I should scan Geraldine and Ricky and put 'em up on the web somewhere.

I have the 'Game of Life' record and it's pretty wacko to be sure. Likewise
another crazy find called 'Flight F-I-N-A-L' where the narrator is the
captain of an airline flight to the afterlife.
Nutzy christian records are sometimes amazing. I have a number of records by
'ventriloquists for the lord' like Marcy, which are just too psychotic. I
have yet to find an album by 'Geraldine and Ricky', which is about the most
warped of the lot. I know she has at least 2, and I have a cd-r of one. I'd
love to find a copy of either, because she came to my Junior High in the
70s.

mj, hell yeah. i definitely feel like the zipps are under-represented on
the box. come to think of it, it seems like the psychier nederstuff is
bypassed quite a lot on this. not that that's necessarily a bad thing,
considering the uniform excellence of the set, but for my own tastes, i could
have used a bit more psych.
anyway, the zipps. granted, there's not a lot of material to draw from
(what? like 4 or 5 singles and some live stuff, i think?), but still i think
they could have thrown old mary wanna on there to good effect. i have almost
bought the recent zipps' "be stoned" set a couple of times, but have always
wound up buying something else. i gotta say i didn't dig everything on there
- - but what's good on there is great, and that is a beautifully packaged disc,
even by pseudonym's high standards. unfortunately i can't remember the names
of the tracks, but there are at least 2 or 3 other zipps tracks i like as
much as "marie huana" and "kicks & chicks." anybody got any opinions on "be
stoned" -? i will definitely be picking this up at some point. just kind of
curious what the rest of you might think.
& by the way, i hate to keep soliciting translations from our dutch
contigent (the dutch connection?), but guys - have you heard the
poetry-reading tracks on the zipps' disc? what in the world is that guy
talking about? just kind of curious.

    <<Haven't heard
it all, but did notice some Outsiders studd sounds much different. I've Been
Loving You Too Long has a fade, Lying All The Time sounds different as well.
>>

gotta admit i didn't notice that on the outsiders' tracks, but i did
notice that several tracks sound quite different to my ears. i think a lot of
the time that probably has to do with the (somewhat surprising) use of stereo
mixes (especially on the 'rarities' disc), but one thing that REALLY jumped
out at me was the sound magics' "when i meet her" (SUPERB beatle-ish moody
uptempo number) - it sounds FASTER than the same track does on distortions'
"dutch beat explosion" comp. maybe that has more to do with the - uh -
less-than-audiophile sound quality of the distortions release than any actual
difference in the tracks. a definite difference to my ears, though.
one other dutch beat thing (for now) - i gotta say that ever time i hear
early (65-66) outsiders stuff, i totally blown away by freakin GOOD it is!!
no major revelation there, i know, but jeez - great band. wally's an awesome
singer, and i love buzz's insane drumming. the outsiders are one band where
my usual "i-prefer-psych" tastes get turned all the hell around: i vastly
prefer the first outsiders LP to "CQ." now, i dig "CQ" (most of it, anyway)
too, but there is such an incredible explosion of energy on that first LP, on
tracks like "if you don't treat me right" and "won't you listen" - i am just
blown away whenever i hear that stuff. what does everyone else prefer? the
first LP or "CQ" -? i am totally for the first album!

i've found it very interesting the past few years, lurking on a lot of
psych-collector lists, how much hard-core collector interest there is now is
rare private-press christian rock LPs from the late 60s & early 70s. i know
nothing about this stuff at all, but i seem to recall a lot of these records
(most of the collectors are calling them "xian") pulling mucho dollars on
ebay. i think a lot of the guys that were putting these kinds of records out
then were like ex-acidheads or something that got turned on to the lord or
something, praised be his name. they were trying to get the kids to drop the
grass for grace or something. kinda weird how stuff like this happens.

totally agreed. they can be mesmerizing. there is a GREAT article on
stuff like this in issue #1 (the only ish so far, i think) of "brown paper
sack," available from sundazed. & for those who are getting a little nauseous
at the thought, there's also super articles on the five canadians & bad

little garage rock. don't OD on JC.

The two volumes of the "Tobacco A-Go-Go" (LP) comps
focused on the Carolinas.

Actually there were *two* compilations focusing
on the South in the Pebbles companion series
"Highs In The Mid Sixties" (vols 8 & 22).

The coolest 60's organ ever! Looks great, sounds better than

guitars, either - there's even a segment in there about the mellotron.
