oooooooh lord yes, i know bibleman well, i actually work for the company
that prints all of the (best-selling, no doubt) bibleman tie-in CDs and
cassettes. when i first started workin there, there was a big stack of
samples and i was sort of going through them, and i was like "oh my god."
bibleman is sort of like batman, except bibleman is like the "knight of
light" or something like that, instead of the dark knight. he is ripped as
shit, but doesn't hit anyone because that would be wrong. his weapon is the
weapon of truth. as bad as this sounds, you haven't experienced the full
bibleman saga until you've seen his enemies - guys like (no kidding) the liar
and (jee-zus) the covetor. it's totally unbelievable how these people come up
with shit like this; somewhere, deep in the bowels of the family channel
complex, there's a programming office, behind the closed door of which, we'd
be able to hear shit like "boss, you've done it AGAIN! that's BRILLIANT!"

    hey ted -
yeah, i gotta agree that as a whole, the "CQ" album is, IMO, a touch
overrated - not that they're aren't a couple of really, really good songs on
there - "it seems like nothing's gonna come my way today" is one of my very
favorite outsiders tracks. but there's some stuff on there - "prisonsong"
especially - that veers a little too close too goofy, unintentionally
humorous moody-bluesish prog. just overdramatic and Very Serious. actually,
two of my favorite tracks on there are (i believe) non-wally tax songs -
"misfit" and "doctor" - both those tracks seem to retain some of the manic
energy of the first LP, though much more psychy.
actually, i think many of the "CQ" tracks sound better on the pseudonym
"CQ sessions" double disc set - especially the title track, which is
presented as only the basic rhythm track, without overdubs & it comes across
as something like "astronomy domine" on quaaludes or "interstellar overdrive"
with a cough syrup problem. neat stuff.
still, though, "CQ" sounds to me like a bit less of a group effort than
the first LP, and i think that has something to do with why i enjoy it less
than the first LP.

<<Any opinions on "Love In"--the 1967 Wally Tax solo album?>>

i am curious about this, too - has this ever even been reissued on CD?

Damn, Rob... that does sound bad! But that snippet sounds more like the
intro to some schlocky Christian sci-fi movie than a song about a boxing
match between Hey-Zeus and Beelzebub!

The other link to the MP3 file is also cut off right before the battle
begins. Damn! I was just gettin' into it, too. Edge of my seat...

But I think I'm sold. I was going to weigh in with Lee Greenwood's "Proud to
Be an American" again, but I think this one takes the cake.

There is also a connection between Xit and the great Lance Records band, the
Lincoln Street Exit. Some claim Xit was a later version, but I can't
confirm this. Searching through past issues of the LANCE from '66 tends to
support the conclusion that there were different line-ups for the Lincoln
Street Exit, so it is possible that Xit evolved out of a later incarnation.
Tommy Bee was, however, the man that brought them to Dick Stewart and Lance
Records' attention (along with the Fe Fi Four Plus Two and most of the
label's other garage bands).

So, have there ever been any "Christian garage bands?" Maybe the Music

By Norman Greenbaum? I don't think that qualifies.

He said that while he's never been a Christian, he wanted to write a
religious rock song, and he thought Jesus would be more commercial than one
of the Hebrew names of God.

That's pretty close to a quote from this interview

It was the Loser's Lounge Brian Wilson show in New York last week that piqued my interest in that stuff. I guess one of the songs he gave them was an early version of what later became "Darlin'" (part of this song was sung at the show as a preamble to "Darlin'") and that had me thinking "Hmmm, I'd like to hear that record."

I've heard the Spring stuff, but never the Honeys.

It doesn't contain all of their stuff, though.

I do know that after their stint on Tower, The
Moonrakers started recorded some Christian-influenced
material that's a bit more psych and garage. But I do
recommend "Love Train," that's a pretty cool fuzz
buster from that period.

Also, there was a group called The Monterrays that
recorded a religious song called "Very Last Day," a
Pete Seeger composition regarding Christ's return to
earth. Another group recorded it that's on the Get
Hip comp "Free Flight: Unreleased Pennsylvania
Acetates" (I think that's the title or at least an
approximation of it), but the name escapes me right
now.

Collector's Choice has a Honey's cd available:
http://www.ccmusic.com/item.cfm?itemid=CCM01632
Capitol released a cd some years back, but it's out of print and the
Collector's Choice has more tracks (I assume the CC disc covers all of the
tracks on the Capitol, but I don't know that for a fact). There is also a cd
of Spring/aka American Spring (2/3s of the Honey's) that was issued on Rhino
in the US and several other labels overseas, but it sells for a lot when
I've seen it come up for sale.

Indeed there was a movie made called "Carman: The
Champion" that came out last year. I've never seen
it, but here's a review quoted verbatim from Leonard
Maltin's 2002 Movie and Video Guide:

"Retired professional fighter-turned-preacher returns
to the ring to raise money for his and his father's
dream project: an inner-city youth ministry. Along
the way, he battles gangs, becomes a surrogate father,
saves some souls and falls in love. Feature film

I remember driving to NYC from Boston on one of my well known one-day record
runs to get those two Outsiders albums when they first came out. Used to
leave Boston at 10 AM, make it to NYC by 2 PM, get my shopping done, look
around for an hour or so and beat the rush home to check out the babes in
cowboy boots and tight denim at the country bar (4 hours of new garage rock
finds and one hour of delayed broadcast Howard Stern helped to offset the bad
country music on the ride home)

I'm partial to CQ as I think it is a quality piece of work that sounds
timeless. Great guitar work by Ronnie Splinter. I think my favorite song has
to be Story 16 though, followed by That's Your Problem. It's a tough call as
they both have their merits.

I saw Willie Aames on To Tell The Truth in his Bibleman regalia. I think
somebody is punishing him for when he outed Kristy McNichol on a Kansas City
radio show I heard back in 92 when I was on spring break in the Midwest. They
asked him if anything happened off the set and he said "Well, aaah, she aah
liked girls".

One of my co-workers is a born again virgin who only let's her kids watch
religious shows on TV, especially Bibleman. Any woman who listens to two
hours of The Rosary on her Walkman is beyond my sympathy. I tried to tell her
that Willie took the route of many has been Hollywood stars and down on their
luck athletes and in some cases, porn stars, they turned to Jesus to save
their career. She wasn't buying it. Now if he had a few other superheroes
form a rock band, maybe I'd watch. Nah.

Hey, I was at the local self serve DJ night last night (listening to
mostly total shit house music, my sweaty palms almost tearing apart the
R&B records I wanted to play) and this guy played a record...I really
want to know who it is so maybe you guys know. It was apparently the
source of the "I'm The Magnificent" sample used in the rap song of the
same name by Special Ed...I immediately recognized the groove and the
refrain, but it was the original song. Super crazy soul/ska/latin song.
Anybody know what I'm talking about? This could be something really
obvious that i just never heard...

I haven't heard the rap song, but "Double Barrel" by Dave and Ansel Collins
says 'the magnificent' a lot. Keyboard driven ska/reggae. Great weird song.

I have Kip to thank for this knowledge.

Is Bibleman a broadcast TV show that I can see on my TV or is it a
series of videos that you have to buy? If it's a TV series, what channel
is it on? I'd like to check it out but don't want to have to buy any
videos!

While I agree that Archie Bell's pronunciation is a little ambiguous, he's
gotta be saying "We dance just as good as we walk"...as in, dancing comes as
naturally to them as walking. And as for him crediting himself as the whole
band, I've always heard the first line as, "Hi everybody, I'm Archie Bell o'
[of] the Drells." If indeed it is "I'm Archie Bell AND the Drells," maybe
when they did the song live he would point first to himself, then to the
band.

But none of these lines are as cosmic as the one shouted out by another
member of the band during the second solo workout section: "come on, tighten
it up bass, come ON!"

mmmmm, a youthquake indeed...at thrift shops I find Christian rock
records hand over fist...er, and sometimes the sleeve art implies the
contents to be sike...of the HIGHEST order (pun intended). However,
if I bought 'em, once home, I'd find folk-ish MOR ala James Taylor or
US college folk sounds of the pre-beat era or, occasionally, an
angelic choral "rock opera", so...I gave up. Stateside, these LPs
are only so much trash. Now, tho' it seems an impossible task, does
anyone know whether there has ever been any serious effort to catalog
or at least to somehow qualify the stuff...or is it the better titles
are seen on collector lists? Given the cost and ABUNDANCE of these
LPs I'd like to explore more, however without guidance I'm afraid I
just won't bother...

There was a bit of discussion regarding this topic on the bomplist
today...more along the lines of sike/garage bands w/christian under
and over-tones...

I was at Jacques Saturday night and as far as I know the only band that
played was Kermit's Finger (who did a thrash punk version of DMZ's "Lift Up
Your Hood" as well as a cover of J. Geils' "House Party"). I was curious
about the Contrarians from New York but they never showed up, probably due
to the snow.

The MOB show that afternoon (I saw the matinee) was pretty great, I thought.
"Mica" was one of my favorites off VS. and they played that one.

Reminds me of an incident in an episode of "The Chris Isaak Show." The band
is on tour and wonders why a lame Christian rock band called Sparrow is
opening for them at one gig. Back at the hotel, the band finds the members
of Sparrow partying hearty as they reveal what their name really means:
"sex, pussy, and really really out-there women."

Thanks for replying about the Parkinsons trip to the USA. Indeed, they can
be a bit raucaus but they definitely do not do the GG thing at all. Well,
the first time I ever saw them Victor was urinating in the corner of the
stage but nothing more than that. The first time I saw mention of anything
GG style going on was in the Independent newspaper a few weeks back when it
talked about "urine, blood, vomit, faeces" and I'm thinking "What?!" Mind
you, that review also said that "no one knows how many songs they've got
because they've never finished a set" - again, what a load of crap. The
first time I'd seen them not finish their set was that show that was being
reviewed. Anybody else seen reviews that made them go "Huh!"? -- PJ

Kari,

I'm an atheist myself, but you shouldn't slur all Christians. There
are good & bad in Christianity. The same goes for any other
religious group. There are good an lousy atheists. Consideration
for all people is what we should have.

It's a shame. I know many cool christians. If asked about their faith,
they'd preface their statement with "I'd consider myself a christian..." to
distance themselves as much as possible from bonehead statements made by the
likes of Jerry Falwell or Pat Robertson. Christian ventriloquism is even
weirder and creepier than just about anything. I imagine that such displays
in ancient times surely would've resulted being burned at the stake as a
witch or sorcerer!!
