Wasn't this concocted at Talent Masters in NYC? Further, weren' the
Undertakers (from Liverpool) in residence at the time? Fake British accent
or not, 'Roses Are Red' can rightly claim "the worst harmonica player on
record" award. But what the hey, I still love it.

Goes deeper than just religion--the wealthy and privileged of every nation
have more in common with each other than with their own countrymen, which
explains our present twisted relationship with the House of Saud and the like.

Somebody knows
What you have done
About you carryin' on
An' havin' fun
You knew it was wrong
But you had to play
Now you're gonna learn
That lyin' don't pay!

It's too late (it's too late)
You lied (you lied)
Now you (now you)
Will cry (will cry)
It scared ya (it scared ya)
To hear it (to hear it)
He's waitin', he's waitin',
He's waitin' for you!

You stayed out late
Just to play your games
But all you got
Was a real bad name
You think you're happy
I got news for you
Well, Satan found out
Little girl you're through!

Chorus

Solo

I don't know why
You were untrue
I guess your kinda girl
Has to make me blue
Satan knows whatcha did
You're playin' around
An' the way he sees it
You're puttin' me down!

Chorus

Whoa, baby, he's waitin' (he's waitin')
Yeah, whoa-ho, he's waitin' (he's waitin')
He's gonna get you yeah
He's waitin' (he's waitin')
He's waitin' (he's waitin')

Enjoy! (Someone else'll have to break out the Modern Lovers cut).

I'm not sure you can touch the Potato Bug for ridiculousness... but "Will
You Or Won't You" by the Four Chaps (aka The Fenways) is pretty damn
unconvincing. The other side, "True Lovers", is nice harmony pop though,
and sure beats the Vogues' version.

As for the You Know Who Group, <<I
think the group was called The You Know Who Group, and the song is called
'Roses Are Red.' You can imagine the deal...British Invasion hits, the label
is too lazy or too cheap to sign a genuine British group so they get a group
to sound English. >>

"Roses Are Red" was sung by some American guys that Bob Gallo had assembled,
but later on, Jackie Lomax & the Undertakers moonlighted as the You Know Who
Group, while they were working with Gallo... so some tracks by the "group"
really are authentic British.

<<There was a band from Chicago called the Exceptions,
who did a fine 7" EP for Flair entitled ROCK & ROLL
MASS, with song lyrics freely adapted from the Holy
Bible. Psych-rock with garage overtones. The Fuzz,
Acid & Flowers website sez this was originally
released in 1966, but it sounds later (1968) to me.
This was something of an anomaly, as I understand
everything else they did (including a lame Mercury 45
I own) was in the Mauds-style horn-band groove.

JP>>

How's about 'Turn Turn Turn' by the Byrds? Funny thing
about that one was I never knew the lyrics were lifted
(minus the 'turn turn turn' refrain) wholesale from a
bible passage/verse/psalm/whatever until I attended a
funeral last year & that was one of the readings (the
bible version, not the Byrds song). Not too sure who
they credit it to on the record though....

Hate to open up an old wound, but isn't Creed a
christian band? Not that I've ever bothered trying to
decipher any of their over-earnest whinings.

Yeah, I used to catch that show once in awhile. What a goofball!
Seriously though, that show was always good entertainment, as he
verbally sparred with callers, who were every bit as goofy as him! I
guess he has a national radio show now, though I have no idea if there's

Best religious tract I have is by a self-proclaimed prophet calling himself
'Squeezebox Eddie'. He's a really incredible accordion player (hence the
nickname), but he's schizoprenic. Anyway in this tract he's convinced that
the anti-christ will come out of Germany and be a guy named "Heinz Munster".
He even has a chart illustrating how he figured all of this out. It's a
series of spirals, mathematic formulaic scribblings, and a series of names,
which supposedly map out the secret lineage of the antichrist. If gazing at
this thing isn't enough to make your head spontaneously combust, at the
bottom of this page in BIG letters and quotations he writes: "IT'S THAT
SIMPLE!"
And for all of this he STILL has it well enough together to hold a steady
job driving a bread delivery truck!

This Was, Benefit, and Stand Up are 3 great LPs. I used to host a Jazz show
several years back and I played "Bouree" for shits & giggles. Man, you
wouldn't believe the angry calls. No matter what anybody sez, it's a Jazz

that they'd gone for an audition at Laurie Records and been rejected. The
label didn't want a band that sounded like The Beatles; they wanted one
sounding like the Hermits. Most of the band was pretty upset, but
songwriter/drummer John Spirt woke up the next day with this song in his
head. He instructed their singer to imitate Peter Noone. The whole idea
was that if Laurie wanted something that dumb, they'd give it to 'em. While
singer Zack Bocelle can't be sure, he thinks that John was basically saying,
"Fine, you want dumb? This is a Dumb Dumb Song." [Note: I've paraphrased
this info from the interview I did with Zack for the upcoming issue of the
Teen Scene.]

Wow, as a Miracle Workers fan of longstanding, it's great to see some of
them back in action again! I only got to see the MW's once (they played with
the Brood at Maxwell's on their "Roll Out the Red Carpet" tour), but they
were every bit as great live as on their records. I think they got the
short shrift from the garage contigent later in their career (a lot of
people seemed to think they got too heavy (how heavy IS too heavy, LOL?),
but they sounded awesome to my ears--I remember they did a KICK-ASS version
of The Saints' "Know Your Product" when I saw 'em).

One thing, Chris--"One Way Street" downloads fine, but the other three don't
stream or download at all for me. You may want to check out the
links/files. "One Way Street" is great, though! Lookin' forward to the
full Get Lost cd!

Subject: Re: Christian Rock and Christian Bompers

I feel like I have to weigh in on a certain episode of
flame-baiting on this list recently. I hope you all
will indulge me.

I am a Christian and a garage/psych fanatic. I have 5
CDs by Christian rock groups (all indie) plus the
stray Hank Williams gospel song or Sam Cooke's gospel
offshoots, but 99.99% of my collection is all '60s
pop, rock, garage, psych, etc. So if you wish to look
past my religious beliefs, you have more than enough
reason to do so.

I try not to proselytize, and I too like to distance
myself from most fundamentalists, like Pat Robertson,
etc. I will not begrudge non-Christians their
alternate beliefs or lack of beliefs, but I really
think that a blanket condemnation of all Christians is
a bit much. In a way, crossing the line. The Bomp list
isn't as a rule an atheist mailing list, even if a lot
of people on here aren't Christians, and all we talk
about is rock and roll music.

The whole Bibleman thing is a bit freaky in my mind
too, but if the kids have to have a superhero who
their super-religious parents will let them watch on
TV, I guess they have to settle for Bibleman. I
remember when the Family Channel was still CBN and
they aired "The Flying House" and "Superbook," both
bad Japanimation shows portraying Bible stories.

Here's another factoid to add to the freaky Christian
media discussion -- Bobby Goldsboro, the singer of the
most corny, maudlin ballad to ever hit the charts,
"Honey," created a Christian muppet show called "Swamp
Critters" that airs on TBN.

On the subject of possible Christian garage, I don't
think you could consider anything by the Music Machine
to fall into that category, as Sean Bonniwell's
conversion didn't happen until long after the MM days.
Perhaps the most notable version of the song "Very
Last Day," which was actually written by either Peter
or Paul of Peter, Paul and Mary, was by the Hollies.
It appeared on their 1965 "Hollies" album, and I think
that's the one most other versions are based on.

I know of one other compilation, called "Songs Of
Faith and Inspiration," but only one song on there
appears to be "Christian garage," and that's "God Is
Real" by the Crusaders, who put out an LP on Tower in
1966 and later turned full psych as the Love Exchange
(recently reissued on Sundazed). The Crusaders album
is...pretty bad. On the other hand, I have a pretty
cool single by a group called The Apocalypse, on
Apocalypse Records, published by Apocalyptic
Publishing, Inc. It's "We Have Lost The Way" c/w "Do
You Remember," ca. 1968, typical melodic folk-rock as
opposed to the Crusaders album, which is merely old
hymns awkwardly given an electric rock beat.

Over in the UK, there was a Salvation Army pop band
called the Joystrings, active around 1964-65, as well
as a band called the Crossbeats (who actually have a
nice website somewhere on the net). There hasn't been
a whole lot of discussion and little written about
this kind of stuff. For many people it all started
with "Godspell."

Fuck yeah, that's the Power Team! Me and some friends went to see them at
the local First Assembly of God and it was some crazy shit. I mean, these
dudes broke through burning 2 by 4's, squeezed open soda cans with their
bare hands, broke baseball bats over their legs, and then talked about The
Lord. They made us all say a prayer, then called everybody up onto the
stage for a Blessing! We were already getting dirty looks from everyone
around us, so we hightailed it outta there. It's a Miracle we made it out
alive!

That Christian rewrite of "He's Waitin'" by the Sonics
(has to be the first rock song about Satan) was pretty
cool! I ought to give the Sonics version and these new
lyrics to one of our many local Christian rock
bands...

That reminds me of a website I found (may have been a
link from this list) where some company did Christian
rewrites of countless popular songs from the '50s to
the present. Some really bad, bad, bad reworkings of
songs like "I'm A Believer" "Wild Thing" ("God Thing")
and "Catch A Wave" ("Catch The Way"). How about
something like "You're Gonna Miss Me" ("You're gonna
wake up one morning, and find Christ has come...")? Or
how about "Are You Gonna Be There (At The Rapture)?"
Or "Holy Water" (instead of "Dirty Water")? As far as
I know, the aforementioned website doesn't have a
"garage rock" section...

Just a thought,
Dave

I'd say the beat/pop bag. I only had the first volume, but I just got the
box set with the three LPs, even though they're supposed to be in fake
stereo (it sounds fine to me).

Anyway, fab melodic knack despite the odd bum track, and the weird/dramatic
Gibb
factor was already noticeable in some of the song titles (I Was A Lover A
Leader Of Men,
I Am The World, Claustrophobia, I Don't Know Why I Bother Myself, Second
Hand People, etc.).

Some of their best mid-sixties material isn't included, though, like the
stuff they cut with Ronnie Burns (Exit Stage Right, Coalman, the incredible
Top Hat, etc.), or their very nice cover of You Won't See Me.

Personally, I think the Bee Gees are totally up there with all the other
classic "B" bands (Beatles, Beach Boys, Byrds, Buffalo Springfield,
Badfinger, Big Star...).

Thanks guys, I appreciate!

I did treat myself to a bunch of cool CDs and LPs, stuff like "The Electric
Banana Blows Your Mind", "The Story Of Simon Simopath", "Move Over For Terry
Reid", a recent Rod Stewart comp called "A Little Misunderstood - The
Sixties Sessions", and the "Here Comes Shuggie Otis" LP reissue among
others, with the MGs' "Time Is Tight" box set to top it off!

I also found a neat book from 1975 by Tony Cummings called "The Sound Of
Philadelphia". It looks very detailed, with lots of pictures.

Thanks again!

Hey, it's no bummer to me, and I'm as psyched as you probably are to know
the source of the sample (found "Double Barrell" on Audiogalaxy; great
song--but then, so's the Special Ed (love that name!) jam)... Special Ed
was definitely cool, witty, and musically just plain FUN.

This I did not know, but it would great if it happens. In general, I think
there was a much greater spirit of FUN in the earlier years of Rap; I miss a
lot of the Old School artists.

By the way, Chick published both those mini-tracts AND full size, full cover
comics (the Crusader series of religious comics--there are 12 in all, and
they are some of the most SUPREMELY SICK comic books ever conceived. They
abound with witchcraft, the evils of rock music, conspiracy
theory--including the Illuminati and a variety of lodges (Masons, Eastern
Star (did I get the name right?), etc),--cannibalism (yep, you read right),
perversion and the like. The one specifically dealing with the R&R record
industry, "Spellbound," is a MUST HAVE, as is the cannibal one, "The Ark."
