general concensus (as opposed to my own) seems to be that tax free has too
much of a laid-back 70s acoustic singer-songwriter thing going on. i haven't
picked up the LP yet, but i do really dig the 2 tax free cuts included as
bonus tracks on my old CD of "CQ," - i think the main objection was the
acoustic , mellow vibe of the stuff - definitely a definite ballpark than the

"Dom kallar oss mods" (note the misspelling - did you read it on Pebbles?) just means "They call us mods"

I've been lurking in the background on this list for a while so maybe I should introduce myself briefly. I'm eva from Stockholm, I'm about as old as the dinosaurs and have been listening to garage rock since the first time I saw the Nomads. heard (granted, not a lot) is pretty good. hey maureen - didn't you just
score all of the remeasters of the early LPs? what's the scoop on those?
ian anderson gets extra points from me for some insightful & cool

rob >>

Ahhh the Jethro Tull re - issues ... and the Rock n' Roll Circus ... I'll
do the re - issues first and shatter illusions next ...
the first 3 Tull re - masters are really well done. I picked 'em up from
a fellow I get a lot of regular release UK stuff from a few months ago, cuz I
couldnt wait. They are out here now, same as the UK versions and at a budget
price no less !!! Anyway I did a quick review of these on Lee's Dead Flowers
site but to sum that up, all 3 sound so much better than the earlier CD's
it's amazing, as do the well chosen bonus tracks. A little more info from
Anderson in the notes woulda been nice but that's not a big complaint.
Anderson actually sat in on the re -mastering and did more than than just
prop his feet up on the mixing desk, and nibble Scottish salmon, as they just
sound marvelous. I know by stating this I'm killing off my chance of snaggin'
un - holy amounts of dosh fer it on ebay, but the re - mastered " Stand Up "
just sweeps the floor with my Mobile Fidelity " Stand Up " CD of several
years ago ... of course the Mobile Fidelity does have the " pop - up "
cover, which the new re - master doesn't ... Myself, my fave of the lot is "
Stand Up ", not a duffo track on it, and the best representation of their
early era before playing larger halls drove them to turn up the amps with "
Aqualung " ( not that bad an LP either really ) with " Benefit " about a
heavy horsed hoof print behind it, and " This Was " about a half a length
back. Unfortunately Jethro Tull after " Aqualung ", started their flirtation
with concept LP's like " Thick as a Brick " which thankfully came with a
newspaper wrapped around it, making it much easier to chuck that rotten
flounder out with the orange rinds, and as fer " Passion Play " ... I was
out the door before the first act ... since then they've done some wonderful
stuff on a number of their LP's, I just don't think they've made anything as
consistent as " Stand Up ", yet they still put on a live show that's
fantastic, and Martin Barre is an amazing guitarist, who if he'd been kooler
lookin' or in a real heavy guitar dominated band, might get the recognition
he deserves ... ask Richie Blackmore, he'll be glad to tell ya ...
Speakin' of guitarists ... on to the MIGHTY TONY IOMMI !!! and Jethro Tull
...
Yes that is Tony Iommi " playing " with Jethro Tull in the Rolling Stones
Rock & Roll - Circus ... but what he is actually doing is miming to a backing
tape, which is the recording of " A Song For Jeffery " from the first Tull LP
" This Was ". The guitar work on that LP was all done by Mick Abrahams, so
sonically speaking, it's Abrahams guitar playing, with Iommi Cornick and
Bunker miming to the tape, the only member of Tull actually playing it live,
was Anderson. Iommi was only in Tull about 2 weeks ... he was unsure of
wether he wanted to continue with Sabbath, and Tull were making more money at
the time, so he tried it out with Tull, couldn't stand it, so he quit Tull
right after the Rock and Roll Circus, and went back to the Sabs. If you watch
Rock and Roll Circus, you'll notice Iommi is wearing a huge brimmed hat
rather low on his head ... rock n' roll legend has it that he did this
deliberately to conceal his identity because he wasn't sure he wanted to do
the Jethro Tull gig. The alternate version of this " legend " has it that
Tull didn't want anyone to know Abrahams ( who had a lot of fans and
following back then ) was leaving, so they had him wear his hat real low to
hide his identity. Iommi never recorded anything officially with Jethro Tull,
and there are no live shows of Iommi with Tull either, as Abrahams continued
with the band for gigs, while the rehearsed with Iommi. I think Iommi is one
of the greatest riff meisters and heavy guitarists of all time, but he
definately wasn't the right guy for Jethro Tull, that honor belongs to Martin
Barre ...

Yeah, but only because Tony Iommi was playing guitar for Tull at that time.

I know there's a number of Clear Light fans here on the list so this should
have ya all diggin out the charge card or runnin' down to the post office fer
a money order ... Collector's Choice has just re - issued the Clear Light LP
on Cd on their own label. In addition to all the LP tracks, it includes their
single side " She's Ready to Be Free " which was used in the " President's
Analyst " movie, and the liner notes include an interview with the great Bob
Seal, who wrote a number of their tunes and is one of the most under-rated
psychedelic era guitar players. Triva buffs can have fun diggin ' on actor
Cliff DeYoung who was the lead vocalist, drummer Dallas Taylor who pounded
'em for CSN&Y and Steve Stills, and Doors fans can now find out who that
Douglas Lubahn fellow that played bass on the Doors LP's was ( check out his
playin' on "Wintertime Love " on the " Waiting for the Sun " LP ).
Collectors Choice is also pumpin' out a number of other Elektra goodies,
like the first Renaissance LP with Keith Relf and Jim McCarty, that Eclection
LP I mentioned just last nite in reference to Gary Boyle ( he is said to have
played on it ), and a bunch of other folk arists as well, and since we're
talkin' Elektra Records, the two Earth Opera albums are now available on CD
in Europe ( looks like the same deal as the first Love re-ish ). It's really
a shame tho' that none of these is coming from Rhino handmade as these are
the kinda stuff they either should be or should have done.

I always thought that was the POINT...

I have similar reggae albums by Jamaican emcees like U-Roy and I-Roy where
its just some guy toasting mindlessly over a reggae groove - as with "Double
Barrel," they're just saying the first thing that comes to mind, regardless
of whether it "tells a story" or not. Kinda goes with the musical territory,
and explains why several reggae 45's have an instrumental flip side. In
Jamaica, they call it the "dub" side. Here in the US, we'd call it "Part 2."

Pshaw. Those first three LPs (This Was, Stand Up, Benefit) are absolutely
ace. I'll admit there are moments on "Benefit" when they're starting to
trend Aqualung-wards, and I have no use for that stuff. But between those
three records, the singles, and the contemporary stuff that ended up on
"Living In The Past", there's about two-hours-plus of GREAT music there.

David--

I've sat this one out, because it's too damned sensitive an issue. But--and
I realize I risk talking out fo school here--the problem is one of
perception. The problem is that the word "Christian" has been fucking
HIJACKED by intolerant dogmatists like Robertson. To a lot of us,
unfortunately, the word "Christian" is now actually tainted, through its
being co-opted by people who resemble Christ less than Gene Simmons does. In
casual use nowadays, the word very nearly connotes the very opposite of what
it's supposed to mean.

So when somebody says they can't stand "Christians," odds are pretty good
they're not talking about you. It's all ridiculous, of course--but let's
face it, nobody fights harder about anything than they fight about religion.

Lenny, do you have The Cavemanish Boys "Get a Load of..." LP/CD that came
out in late 2000 on Munster (in Europe) and Blood Red Vinyl & Discs here in
the States? That's also got Gerry Mohr on it. Not *quite* as good as the old
Miracle Workers stuff, but still one of my favorites from the year. Really
great fuzzed-out garage punk. Check http://www.surftrio.com/releases.html

By the way... speaking of Blood Red, was it just me or was that "Solid Gold
Sound" LP from The Fleshtones their absolute worst ever? Maybe it was just
the production on this one, but I thought it was just awful and could barely
make it through one complete listening without getting a sick feeling in my
stomach. What HAPPENED?!

Too many times the stereotype is of some prissy "Flanders" type character, but
keep in mind that in many parts of the world, it's dangerous to be a Christian.
In Sudan and parts of Indonesia, they're routinely slaughtered and in China
they're jailed and/or executed. Not to be outdone, our friends the Taliban used
to torture people *suspected* of being Christian. So believe (or don't) what you
want, but you have to hand it to people who are willing to put everything on the
line for their faith. -- Rick

Hmmmm... it's a tough choice, but I think I'd have to weigh in with "Dirty

Speaking of the Sonics... My friend Bill and I interviewed garage rock
artist/designer Art Chantry at a local coffee shop Tuesday night for our

stories of growing up in the Tacoma scene, hanging out with Girl Trouble,
etc. His favorite band, of course, is The Sonics. Smart guy!

If any of you are in the St. Louis area (or will be) between now and
mid-April, you should really stop by the City Museum downtown and check out
his show in their gallery, featuring most, if not all, of his classic garage
posters, flyers, LP/CD and 7" covers, and all sorts of stuff dating all the
way back to the late '70s. It's a pretty amazing show. For more info:

which lets you know how long ago it was-and he said this "Sex through

but he was representing Ultra Orthodox Jews(I think he was like he Jewish

did DO IT through the sheets! It might be erotic with satin sheets !!!

Tony is in the video, but the band was miming to an existing track - that's not
Tony's guitar that you're hearing.

Nope, it was on an album by their labelmates the Six & Violence from the late
80s called Lettuce Prey. Ian Anderson played on a couple of songs, my
favorite was one called "Bursting Bladder."

It had lyrics like:
Tonight I drank any beer that I could find
Now I'm in a real bind
Before I was thirsting
Now my bladder's bursting
and I really gotta go, really gotta go

I had new respect for Tull after I heard that (I already had respect for Ian
for the bravery to wear the codpiece). I doubt that the guys from Yes or ELP
would do something like that.

Someone mentioned Tony Iommi and Jethro Tull. He never recorded with them,
and in the Rock and Roll Circus, he appears but is not heard. It is a
studio recording with a live vocal only.

There was paperback published in the mid-80's called "Rock & Roll: Proceed
with Caution" that was a current-to-then compendium of Christian
"sound-alike" bands, purporting to list bands that were the sonic
equivalents of KISS, Devo, Joan Jett and more... Good for a laff if ya ever
run across it, though as others have suggested, I'll bet these
"sound-alikes" fall pretty far from their intended marks. Cover photo was a
walkman in one of those circle-with-a-line-thru-it thingamies.
