Subject: The Saturday People: LP out now + NYC & DC shows

The 12" vinyl version of The Saturday People album on Slumberland is out now.

It's available via the Slumberland site (www.dropbeat.com) for 8 bucks.
There's also a CD version... See the site for MP3s and more info.

The SPs also have two shows coming up:

- -- Friday, Feb. 15 at Brownies, NYC -- w/Trembling Blue Stars, Ooberman, Aden
(see www.futurepopshop.com/tickets)
- -- Monday, Feb. 18 at The Metro, Washington DC -- w/Barcelona, Kleenex Girl
Wonder, Allen Clapp

from www.indiepages.com:
The Saturday People - s/t cd (Slumberland)
Really, how could this not be perfect? This band released 2½ amazing singles,
all of which are included on this cd, though some are re-recorded (the
additional piano in "California Girls" totally changes the feel of the song).
And I've been waiting for this cd's release ever since I heard their first
single. This is perfect pop in the vein of early Creation bands like Biff
Bang Pow!, the Weather Prophets, Primal Scream, the Loft... this band is
totally up there with all of them. This is probably the best thing to happen
in American jangle pop since the Springfields/Choo Choo Train. Sometimes
elegant, like on "Grace" or "Ghost Of A Chance"; sometimes totally shambolic,
like on "Slipping Through Your Fingertips" or the opener "No Matter Where You
Are"; always wonderful. I thought "Upside-Down Girl" was kinda funny, though
- - the way it starts out with the guitar strum, and the words "It's been a
hard...", makes it sounds a bit familiar... And "Twilight Story" is still a
brilliant song that forces me to dance around foolishly! This is an instant
classic!

from dropbeat.com:
>The Saturday People s/t (Slumberland) CD
'DC's The Saturday People know, understand and revere classic pop, jangling
12-string guitars, angelic harmonies and timeless arrangements. And, of
course, they also make it. Featuring an impeccable pedigree boasting members
of Velocity Girl, The Ropers, Tree Fort Angst and The Castaway Stones, The
Saturday People effortlessly combine 60s folk-pop and soft-rock with
power-pop and 80s jangle-pop. Fans of Biff Bang Pow!, Orange Juice, The Grass
Roots and The Weather Prophets and the Creation, Pink and Sarah labels should
feel right at home with these sweet sounds. The guitars clang and strum, the
drums pop along and the stellar tunes put you in orbit. The arrangements are
full and effective, supplementing the standard band line-up with added
percussion and piano. Its an all around triumph, really, and further proof
that quality tunes are always in style and bands need not kow-tow to the
latest trends to make relevant music. Eventually it all comes down to classic
tunes, great playing and infectious enthusiasm, and The Saturday People have
all of that in spades.'

Other SP releases:
Twilight Story b/w The Castle 7" (Brittle Stars)
Slipping Through Your Fingertips b/w Californiagirls 7" (Slumberland) -- out
of print
Grace b/w Porcelain, split 7" with The Clientele (Slumberland)

Hey there again!
Somehow I sent my message incomplete. I always thought the concept of
"Christian Rock" was absurd. After all, isn't Rock and Roll the devil's
music? Some years ago, while working part time at a local record store
during Christmas, I had several customers buying gifts, and many would ask
for the new "Stryper" LP. The store had a big display for Stryper, but some
pranksters had placed a bunch of "Slayer" LPs in the racks of the Stryper
display. The names are somewhat similar. The lady I waited on was confused
when she brought a Slayer LP to the checkout, and I straightened her out,
but I wonder how many god fearing teens got a Slayer LP for Christmas? The
same night, I sold 3 different Jimmy Swaggart LPs to some guy who said he
was buying them for his Momma, and had to chase the guy out of the store
with some Cramps on the store stereo when it was time to close. I also had a
customer that was sent in by her daughter to buy a Bad Brains LP. Her
daughter told her they were a Christian band so her mom would buy it for
her.
Working for the devil,
bob

I don't know if it was a Jack Chick book or not, but I do remember one with a
picture of the Grim Reaper and it just says "Hi There" on the front.

You could always count on a bunch of bible belting Jesus freaks on hang out
in front of the Worcester Centrum back in the 80's distributing pamphlets. I
still have one that had "The World's Greatest Rock and Roll Band" on the
cover and it went on to list all these dead musicians according to their
respective instruments. "Man, imagine what sounds they could lay down!".

It went on to say that Jesus did not hate rock and roll music. Hell, he
shouldn't, we made a rock opera for him and put Ian Gillan in the lead vocal
role. I'd be flattered. I remembered being really drunk and actually having a
discussion with one of them. The guy would point out how all the spandex
clad, large breasted , and large haried metal chicks looked like whores.
(like that was a bad thing). I asked him about the difference between a Jesus
groupie and an Aerosmith groupie was. Other than Aerosmith groupie being
better looking in spandex and fuck me pumps, I couldn't see a big difference.
The phony worship idea seemed the same to this guy. He got flustered and gave
up. It was fun watching him stammer. I told him to let his hair grow long,
buy a guitar, and maybe, just maybe, he could get some for himself.

Didn't the Children of God cult recruit people through sex? I thought I read
about it somewhere. I still think Koresh was my favorite. He fucked half of
Texas and had them all convinced they were doing it for God. A sick man,
yeas, but also a smart man.

You're absolutely right about Rhino Handmade droppin' the ball on these
groups Maureen. I pitched ALL of these titles -- and let's not forget bands
like Rhinoceros and Crabby Appleton, to name a few more -- but they were
all shot down for various reasons. Guess Rhino thought they could do better

Went home last night and perused titles on the
"Nuggets" box for inspiration (pardon the pun) and saw
some titles that could be co-opted (like the
"Holy/Dirty Water" thing) and some songs where the
lyrics would be changed. An example: "Lies"
("...they're telling me that God's not real...")

I also realized that no one has mentioned another song
that has some religious references, that was recorded
in 1966 by a Bomp-revered group, the Remains. "Don't
Look Back," written by Billy Vera, has a decidedly
gospel-leaning sound to it, and includes that little
aside from Barry Tashian: "The truth is the light, the
light is the way....I'll light a candle and I'll pray
that the Lord will bless you..." Hope none of the
atheists and non-Christians on this list will hold
this against Tashian, even if you've never forgiven
the song's writer for the dreadful '80s schlock of "At
This Moment"...

You want me to promise that I will never work for the
"other side"?? Which side are we talking about? Are
you afraid I might start writing Christian garage rock
songbooks for Jack Chick? Are you afraid I might start
a Chesterfield Kings-type Christian rock band complete
with bowl haircuts, Vox amps and Rickenbackers? Not
that I've never considered the latter idea... :)

Someone mentioned the near-impossibility of singing
Syd Barrett-era Pink Floyd songs like "See Emily Play"
or "Ahhhnold Layyne" without affecting a fake British
accent. This is the essence of what makes those early
songs so danged British in the first place. Try
singing "Dedicated Follower Of Fashion" by the Kinks
without an accent. You can do it, but it won't be
"English" anymore.

One "faux-Brit" song no one has mentioned is "Hey
Little Bird" by the Barbarians. Even though the
Beatles, whom they were lampooning, didn't use their
Scouse accents in their early songs to the extent of,
say, Gerry and the Pacemakers, the Barbarians try to
pull it off. "Since I saw you standing _thur_..." It's
a subtle attempt, but it's there.

Compare the Beatles version of "Do You Want To Know A
Secret?" to Billy J. Kramer's, and you'll also hear
what I mean about the difference in Liverpudlian
accents used by Liverpool groups.

Its nothing like their proper records as the last recording (if I
remember right) dates six months or so BEFORE their Etiquette
recordings...Larry's dad recorded everything, its snips and bits of
them live & practices from their first three or so years, and VERY

is the version of 17 that's on Stand Up, the complete long version as released on the single? This might be the only reason I'd buy a Tull album these days. Great song that sound very little like J Tull. My single is was bought used in 1975, so it's pretty worn out. When they put this on a rarities cd a few years ago, they faded it out
half way through its 6+ minutes!!

You know there was a time that the Tull was the hot ticket. After Thick As A Brick, the record company thought they could sell zillions of Passion Play. I was working in a record store at the time, what, '73? They were taking advanced orders in expectation of it flying out the door. It finally came out, and no one bought it. Just sat
there. Ooooh. Sort of the end of Tull as the top dog.

HAHAHAHAHA!!!! Fleshtones...coming out with another
new record...that's a hot one! No, sorry, no new
record. They are still out supporting "Solid Gold
Sounds". Remember, this is the band who had to
re-record "Soundcheck 2000" as "Soundcheck 2001" cause
it took so long for "SGS" to come out.

Anyway, the Fleshtones are not to be missed. 99% of
the time they put on an amazing show. NYC area
Bompers should be aware that the four most exciting
men in rock and roll will be at the Warsaw on Saturday
Feb. 16th, with the Ton-Ups and the What IV (aka The
Vacant Lot doing British Invasion covers).

I'd suggest checking out www.fleshtones.org to find
out who the opener is for the Columbus gig, but as it
doesn't even have the date listed...COLEMAN!!!

This disc is great and should be considered as "baby snaps" of the
Sonics. It has great charm but, apart from a few tracks by the paint
stripping Rosalie line-up, less of the all-out-attack of the two Etiquette
albums we all love. You need to put these early tracks in the right
context (i.e. kids figuring out how to play Link Wray) rather than making a
direct comparison with say The Witch or Psycho. Do that and you will have
a lot of fun listening to this disc as I did a mere thirty minutes ago.

NO, but fair point about the "re-channelled stereo" mix Mr K. However,
Compactor Studio is no more and the next album is gonna be recorded,
obviously, elsewhere. Any suggestions how we can lock the 'Tones out of
the control booth and get Billy Miller/Andy Shernoff or Ben Vaughn to
produce the next opus? Now with regards to the actual songs on SGS, well
IMHO "Test The Flesh" and "Daddy-O" are two of the very best tunes from the
boys but "Good, Good Crack" just does not float my boats. Iam Fuzzco may
care to disagree with this though as he has been known to stagger (!) home

Welcome aboard the Bomp List, Eva. You may want to look out for the

date set for the end of the month with a big party planned. WARNING: Cider
may be served at this event!

Steve

PS The disc contains a fine cover of "I'm So Blue" by the Namelosers.

I liked 'em up 'til Living In the Past, especially the first LP with
Abrahams on it. Saw them at Cobo in Sept 73 and again in Oct 75.

I've been lurking in the background on this list for a while so maybe I
should introduce myself briefly. I'm eva from Stockholm, I'm about as old as
the dinosaurs and have been listening to garage rock since the first time I
saw the Nomads. I spend most of my spare time playing in a band and I should
definitely be working right now... >>

hi eva, welcome to the list. thanks for the translation. don't get too
hung up about the work - i spent a good part of my "work"day reading the bomp
list. how many of you other guys are sitting there trying to look busy and
reading the bomp list? shit, i have it down to a fine art.
who else takes music in to work? jan, i know you do! here's what i took
in today - what's everybody else listening to while they're pretending to
work?

julie driscoll, brian auger & the trinity - "open"
oxford circle - "live at the avalon 1966"
wailers - "livewire!"
outsiders - first album
beatles - "white mono"
yardbirds - "over under sideways down" (raven comp) & "cumular limit"
nederbeat box discs 1-4
strawberry alarm clock - "anthology"
unknown mystery 60s group
luscious jackson - "natural ingredients"
flamin groovies - "supersnazz"

i found out that i most likely going to shit-canned from job yesterday, so i
am settling in for some really serious irresponsibility before they kick my
ass out the door. slackin is my business, and business is fuckin GOOD. i love
my work.

can anybody opine on the quality of the Q65 "negram years" disc? i
believe this contains the "afghanistan" album & some other tracks? possibly
another whole album? i am only familiar with their decca stuff, so any help
with this would be appreciated. i know the later stuff is quite different
than the fuzzed-out insanity of 66-67, that it's much "hippier," but anything
more specific would be good. i am trying to stretch the old music dollar as
far as i can.

Yeah, but not by choice, boyo. When it's the last
song they do, and they do it for 10 minutes, it kinda
sticks in yer head.

Most of the songs on SGS are good songs, however, the
production - BITES. If I had it my way, I would trash
a third of the songs, replace them with other ones
that were recorded, but not included, dump the
keyboard tracks on all of them, and force Zaremba to
do another stab at the vocals.

As far as I can tell, Fleshtones records are like Star
Trek movies, every other one is really good, and the
one in between, not quite.

Still, they are really good guys and consistantly put
on the best live shows I have ever seen.

Rebbe (Bomp translation: Big Kahuna) of the Lubavitch sect. They're a
movement within Chassidism. If anyone remembers my Christmas mitzvah mobile
story, these are the same guys.

Only among the Lubavitchers, not even among all Chassids, though they're the
highest profile sect, at least in NYC.

But if Donahue explained all this, half the show would have been gone right
there. (and I didn't even get into the messiah stuff)

 But what if they

Just as an example of how ambiguous these things can be, I came across two
pages that talked about the same passage in the Talmud, one interpreted it
as meaning that sex should be gotten over with quickly (at least for
Rabbis), the other thought it was instructions for foreplay.

Man, I agree completely, but I've shied away from saying so,
because I totally love those guys. Besides, those songs performed
live really do rock. I don't know, maybe it's just the live element,
but the SGS tunes I've seen them play onstage are just so much
more dynamic.

The record, by comparison, sounds like a funeral dirge......

Still, it may not be a Solid Gold album, but they will always have
the Solid Gold Sound.....

Subject: Bo Diddley- Black Gladiator re-visited

A week or so ago we were talking about the Bo Diddley "Black Gladiator"
album. I really wish I weren't so broke right now because there's a
Ramparts Magazine on eBay right now from 1971 with an 11 (!!!!) page
article on him from that time period. It says "There is a major
article, The Second Coming of Bo Diddley (11 pages and six black and
white pictures) about his life in 1971 in the San Fernando Valley."
Probably answers all kinds of questions about that weird album. I would
love to buy this right now, but not for $14.00, which is what the guy
wants. Why don't one of you buy it and scan it in for the rest of us!

And while you're at it, why don't you buy yourself a '68 Plymouth GTX
and let me borrow it indefinitely...
