Strange as it may seem I guess not ... but then we are taking " rock

a big floppy hat down low, and someone years ago read more into it than it
really is. Also Iommi may have worn it low by his own choice so no one would
recognize him, because he'd pretty much just about made up his mind to go
back to Sabbath, and Bunker and Cornick have hats on in that performance too,
so Tony may have just been wearin' a hat to go along with the rest of the

many Newcastle Browns between some amatuer rhythm sleuths.

all this talk about tull on the rock&roll circus has got me thinking -
excatly how much stuff has been booted from the filming of this? IIRC, this
took place over two days in mid-december 1968; i have at least 2 different
rehearsal takes on "who remembers the high numbers" of the who doing "a quick
one," in addition to the final version that was included in the show. there
was a rehearsal take of the dirty mac's version of "yer blues" that surfaced
on the "lost lennon tapes" radio show back in the late eighties, and there
was several minutes of loose jamming with yoko on caterwaul & ivry (sp?)
gitlis on electric violin, some of this was eventually released in '95 on the
ABKCO "rock & roll circus" CD under the title "whole lotta yoko," but there's
more out there on various beatles boots. what about the stones? i'll bet
there's a lot of stones stuff that didn't make the final cut of the film - or
any tull stuff, taj mahal (taj kicked ass on the show w/ the late great jesse
ed davis on guitar), or marianne faithfull? one of my favorite parts on the
video was lennon & mick jagger introducing "yer blues" - it'd be cool if
there were more bits like this left on the cutting room floor.
just as an aside, the who's performance of "a quick one" on here is one
of the most incredible live performances i have ever seen. wow!! townshend
was just hammering the shit out of that SG.

Hey Ron, I agree completely. I list The Sonics as one of my all-time
favorite bands, naturally, but I couldn't really find anything worthwhile on
this to spin on The Wayback Machine, either. It's definitely primitive, but
I agree, not savage at all. And thanks for using a word that I had to pull

I take music to work everyday! Luckily, I've got an actual "office" where I
can listen to it pretty much uninterrupted. I also dig listening to webcast
radio, too, like Live365.com. Gearhead Radio has got some really great
stuff, 17+ hours, both old and new (and don't think it's all new Gearhead
releases, either... there's a ton of '60s and '70s stuff on it as well). The
last time I tuned in I noticed that you need to have a broadband Internet
connection (something faster than a 56k modem) to be able to hear it. But
for some reason now I can't find it on the Live365.com site. A check at the
Gearhead site makes it look like they're hosting it themselves now(?). Not
sure... I'll have to investigate this further today at work!

Gearhead Radio: http://www.gearheadmagazine.com/HTML/radio.html

Guess this is a good opportunity for me to plug Head in a Milk Bottle Radio,
too. Has anyone checked it out yet? I'm about to change the playlist. It's a
good mix of bands and/or releases that were covered in the first two issues
of the 'zine, either in interviews, features, or reviews. It's over seven
hours long so you can easily have it playing at your desk all day. I need to
play around with mixing in more announcement breaks and other oddball
between-songs samples of movie trailers and stuff, but it's not bad for the
first try. AND you can listen to it with a 56k dialup, too.

Any idea how many demo tapes arrive in the mail each day? I get bands to
send them to my work address so I can listen to them and file them while
"working" (read: reading the bomplist). Filing, by the way, means in the
trash, in the pile marked 'phone them right now cos god damn their hot'
(not very common), or the pile marked 'hmmm... not bad, must catch 'em live
sometime'. -- PJ

<< After Richard and the Young Lions, I was in a group called Splendor's
Castle...we played every nite with Clear Light at The Scene in Nyc...and then
a memorable concert in Tomkins SQ PArk...I can tell you this...if there was a
better live band, I havent seen them.....with their double drummers, THEY
KILLED !! and the new stuff they DIDNT record was even better...One song was
called NEW YORK CITY or something...damn what a song...TWIG R&YL >>

The Scene? Really? I had thought that their long NYC residency was at the
Electric Circus. I remember reading that somewhere......still, if you were
there I guess you oughtta know!

As for that "new stuff they didn't record......." ....here's a heartbreaker:
actually, they DID record it. I spoke to Ralph Schuckett in 1976 (when his
memory was still fresh, so I don't doubt what he said) and he said that the
entire original line-up recorded "six or seven" new songs that sounded "like
the first album, only better"......and then Bob Seal quit. His replacement
was Danny Kortchmar......and suddenly the band took a huge left-hand turn in
direction and ended up sounding like, uh, well, like a band with Ralph
Schuckett and Danny Kortchmar would sound. See "Jo Mama" for the painful
details......

Anyway, Ralph liked the NEW sound better......he wasn't much for that
psychedelia stuff. And this is the guy who wrote the music for "Ballad Of
Freddie and Larry"! So we had a friendly argument about that, as you'll
imagine.

The heartbreaker is this: nobody knows where those tapes are, or even if they
still exist. As far as Ralph knew, Doug Lubahn had a 7" reel of "final"
mixes. This was in 1976. At the time Lubahn was, according to Ralph, a
"starving musician" living in the Bronx near Yankee Stadium--even way back
then, not my most favorite neighborhood.

Shortly after that, Lubahn got successful.......first with a band called
"Pierce Arrow," and then, I think, in commercial-and-jingle work.

I haven't spoken to Ralph since then. I (and several of y'all) have been
lobbying Elektra, then Rhino, then (peripherally) Sundazed for years to try
and get CL re-released. Bob Irwin said in 1999 that he'd love nothing better
but that he just couldn't get the rights, for whatever reason.

When Collector's Choice finally got their hands on it, they contacted Mike
Stax to do the notes. I asked him if "She's Ready To Be Free" was gonna make
it onto the disc. He said he had asked but that he didn't think so. At
which point I wrote an impassioned letter to CC. Finally, they relented and
realized that it just made good sense. I also asked that it be sequenced
BETWEEN side one and side two instead of at the end. NOTHING can follow
"Night Sounds Loud."

Well, I think that had more to do with Stax than it did with my efforts. But
as long as it's on there!

Mike is in the process of talking to the rest of the band.....and he HAS
found Lubahn, and those tapes may well resurface--but they might not be in a
"releasable" shape.

Back in 1980, when I sang "London Calling" with my smalltown punk band,
everyone thought it was soooo cool that I didn't sing it with a British
accent, instead in my flat, nasal Western NY accent. Got more comments
on that than anything else that I did with the band. Hell, I woulda felt
stupid trying to put on a British Strummer accent. Now, just why we were
doing the song in the first place is another matter....

If you had any say what could be on an "Austin Powers" soundtrack,
what bands would be on it. I'm only saking for bands from 1976-

The Three O'Clock-"Her Head's Revolving"
The Hoodoo Gurus-"I Want You Back"
The Lyres-"Help You Ann"

Yeah, Dee Rangers is s great band and I've seen them play a couple of times. I'm sure they'll do "But I'm so blue" justice - that song craves some good harmonica and they've got it! They're nice guys too - occasionally dropping by our rehearsal room for a chat and a beer on their way to theirs.

Do you know more about where & when the realease party will be? It's nearly the end of the month already.

Personally I'd want to pick original stuff from the 60s, mostly from UK
bands (not that there's anything WRONG with the more recent stuff) Plus I'd
have to throw in lots of psychedelic easy listening (especially things like
'101 Strings Astro Sounds from Beyond 2000' ) Speaking of gruvay muzak, I
recently picked up an lp for a french-canadian film called "Love in a 4
Letter World" from 1970 and it is TOO totally grooooooooooooooooooovy, baby.
This is one of the films that Candy Greene had a part in (apparently a
fairly large part, since one of the cuts on the album is dedicated to her)
so if anyone out there has it on video (in any language) I'd love to get a
copy.

I read Gillan autobiography called Child In Time, and when he talks about the
Sabbaths days, I guess he didn't know the lyrics all that well and there was
a lot of trademark Gillan screams to cover for it. There were also lyric
sheets in front of him on the floor. I guess he did most of the set in a
crouch to read the lyrics through all the dry ice. Anybody see this tour?
They supposedly got Bill Ward out of rehab to play on the record and Bev
Bevan from ELO (!) to do the tour.

at Sundazed H.Q., so you know those double drums are going to sound
spectacular -- especially at high volume!

Young? Yes. Savage? Uh, no. I broke a longstanding rule not to air a
track/disc I hadn't had a chance to listen to. The song title looked
promising -- the performance somnambulant. It literally put the parking
brakes to the set in progress. Some of us automatically equate "raw" with
"good." It ain't necessarily so. >>

And most of us should know by now that if an album includes "early" stuff,
they don't necessarily sound like the band as you know them.

Looky here: different lineup. Most (if not all) songs come from the
pre-Beatle era. I figure most people should have known not to expect "Psycho"
and "The Witch." That's like knocking Elvis' Sun sessions for not sounding
like "Suspicious Minds."

That earlier poster was right: hear this CD in the continuum of the
instrumental bands of that era (Link Wray, Ventures, Johnny & the Hurricanes,
etc.) and maybe you'll "get it." You may not "like it," but at least you'll
understand what they were doing. To me, it's the kind of record where if it
weren't released under the Sonics' name, then the expectations would be
totally different.

I'm not hearing it as an early version of what they became, I hear it for
what they were in that period - a decent dance band from Smalltown, USA.

Go here to see a pic of the Black Sabbath Stonehenge set from this tour (pre
Spinal Tap!): http://www.dromo.com/fusionanomaly/blacksabbath1983tourset.jpg

Mojo Magazine: Ian Gillan, you briefly joined Black Sabbath in 1983, tell us
about the infamous Born Again tour that provided such valuable inspiration
for Spinal Tap?

Ian Gillan: We were up at a company called LSD (Light and Sound Design) in
Birmingham, and the lighting engineer asked if anyone had any ideas for a
stage set. Geezer Butler suggested Stonehenge. "How do you envisage it,
Geezer?" asked the engineer. "Life size, of course," replied Geezer. So they
built a life-size Stonehenge. We hired the Birmingham NEC to rehearse in and
they couldn't get these bloody things in there. We opened in Montreal and Don
Arden had hired Maple Leaf ice hockey stadium for a week, so they shipped the
set over there and could still only get a few of those damn stones up, one
each side of the stage, one behind the drums and two cross-pieces. The album
was called Born Again and had the most vile cover I've ever seen, a new-born
baby painted red with yellow finger nails and two little yellow horns
sticking out of his head. Now, I've not been able to remember a single word
of any of the Sabbath songs, I don't know why but they won't go into my head.
So I did myself a prompt book and wrote out the first lines of each song. I
don't normally use monitors but I had two wedges put at the front of the
stage just to hide my book, and I'd practices turning the pages with my foot
at home in the kitchen. No problem. On the last day of the rehearsal we're
wondering what this dwarf is doing hanging around backstage. When we do the
dress rehearsal the dwarf emerges in a red leotard, long yellow finger nails
and little yellow horns. He's going to be the baby.
Then we hear this horrendous screaming sound â€" they've recorded a baby's
scream and flanged itâ€"and suddenly; we see this dwarf crawling across the top
of Stonehenge, then he stands up as the baby's scream fades away and falls
backwards off this 30 foot fibreglass replica of Stonehenge onto a big pile
of mattresses. Then dong, dong â€" bells start toiling and all the roadies come
across the front of the stage in monk's cowls, at which point War Pigs starts
up. By now we can see the kids are either in stitches or wincing in horror.
After spending 40 grand a day to achieve all this, someone had economised by
not actually trying out the dry ice in the afternoon run through. So as I
stride confidently towards my prompt book, not even knowing the first word of
the song, I'm suddenly shocked to see a chest-high cloud of dry ice is
berating me to the front of the stage. So there I am after this big opening,
kneeling down, swatting the air and trying to read me line, popping my head
above this cloud every now and then. Someone shouted "It's Ronnie Dio!"

Me! Me!

I share an office, but fortunately I have the best officemate in the world.
His musical taste overlaps enough with mine that I can pretty much bring
in and play whatever I want and it's never a problem. Or sometimes we'll
listen to WFMU.

Currently in the 3CD changer:

the Liliput/Kleenex 2CD retrospective, Disc 1
the Wontons CD (can't recall if anyone here has mentioned this but it's
really good!)
the Upper Crust, 'Entitled' (Disc 1)

Sitting in the pile next to the stereo:

The Decca Freakbeat Scene comp, AC/DC - Powerage, Mission of Burma -
Signals, Calls & Marches and The Horrible Truth About Burma, the Seconds -
Y, the Greenhornes' first album, the White Stripes - De Stijl, the
Titanics, the first 4 or 5 Kiss CDs, a couple of early Roxy Music CDs,
Wire's Pink Flag and 154, the Go's album from a couple of years ago, the
Dictators - Bloodbrothers, some Pretty Things CDs, etc. etc.

At least when work sucks I've got good music to listen to!

Evan
