is the version of 17 that's on Stand Up, the complete long version as
released on the single? This might be the only reason I'd buy a Tull album
these days. Great song that sound very little like J Tull. My single is was
bought used in 1975, so it's pretty worn out. When they put this on a
rarities cd a few years ago, they faded it out
half way through its 6+ minutes!!

RS >>

Unfortunately they used the short version here too ... clocks in at 3:07,
kind of a shame as they could easily have used the full length version. The
CD itself comes in at 51 minutes and 34 seconds, so there's plenty a' room to
do so, but it fades away at the 3:07 mark, just after the vocals end ... for
whatever it's worth, the rest of the bonus trax are " Living in the Past ", "
Driving Song " and " Sweet Dream " ... and like I said earlier, it does
sounds wonderful.
and no "pop up " either ... maureen

Just to be sure, I just had another listen to the track - sober - cranked
up way loud - but not distorted - and I'm still certain I nailed those
wurdz...as gutteral as some of 'em are. Like zillions of other 80s/90s
garage bands we used to cover this live, so I pored over the lyrics way
back, and still haul the original out for mandatory listening every month or
two. I admit to never hearing the Droogs' version - I wonder how they
interpreted it?

Sure, it's no big deal, but this is one of the killinest songs ever - I
agree that a third or forth opinion wouldn't go astray, so if anyone's up
for it...

Diggin' Strychnine now..no end to their genius...

I haven't heard "All Of Us" yet, but I'll be sure to pick it up! >>

yeah, i was a little underwhelmed by "simon simopath" at first, but it
definitely improved for me with subsequent listenings - my favorite songs on
there are "i never found a love like this" and "in the courtyard of the
stars." i really like this band a lot. i'm not much of a UK kaleidoscope fan,
i mean, they're OK, but for precious, dainty UK popsike, IMO you don't get
any better than these guys. actually, so much of their stuff is - i don't
know, a lot of it i wouldn't really even call "psych" - it has almost this
theatrical thing going on. a lot of those songs make me think of slighty
psychedelicized fred astaire stuff from the 30s, a lot of those songs have
that sorta lysergic broadway thing. theatrical in the sense of being
extremely tuneful, well-constructed songs, NOT theatrical in the keith
emerson sense. (insert 38 minute solo here........far out)
"all of us" is, i think, their best album. spyropolous has a great
jazz-inflected tune on there, "you can try it" - sort of a slighty spooky
piece of melancholy pop sike with some very cool jazzy chord changes;
campbell-lyons has "tiny goddess" & a couple of other really great songs.
"rainbow chaser" is on there, too - a really cool track with loads of
phasing. i think this was their closest to having a hit in the UK, it got to
maybe 30-something in the charts sometime in '68.
the "black flower" CD, which was (i think) originally released as "to
markos III" for about 10 minutes and then withdrawn by island...or maybe it
wasn't ever actually released commerically, i can't remember. anyway, there's
more great stuff on here - a couple more spyropoulos tunes than the other
records - including the absolutely awesome godlike "black flower" - a totally
superb piece of orchestral late (1970) psych, with more of those cool chord
changes, a sort of theatrically spooky feel to it (without being pretentious
or unintentionally humorous), a godlike guitar solo, and a superb orchestral
arrnagment by mike vickers, late of manfred mann. really, really good stuff.
buy this!!
    & in case you're interested, campbell-lyons pre-nirvana band hat&tie has
a track on one of the "circus days" volumes, and i believe one of the recent
10th planet label comps, i want to say the "president" label LP, but i really
can't remember, has a couple more tracks by hat&tie.
damn, my head is killing me, i am hung over as shit. i am gonna make some
coffee......nirvana UK kicks ass all over the place, though. if you enjoy
english pop psychedelia with a dash of tweeness, it doesn't get any better
than this....

The title is a reference to a 1964 American release "This is the... The
Savage Young Beatles." (So that's where the Chesterfield Kings got it from)
Most of the tracks weren't The Beatles (two with Tony Sheridan, one without
him, 5 of Sheridan without The Beatles, all recorded before Ringo joined)
and none of the tracks were exactly savage.

The Savage album, appropriately named The Savage Young Beatles, contained
four Sheridan/Beatles tracks and four songs by Tony Sheridan. The front
cover deceptively shows the group without Tony and mentions Tony's name (on
the front cover) only at the bottom, as though "T. Sheridan" were one of the
songs...

What's the C. Kings thing you're talking about?

Yeah, this disc is pretty raw. Keep in mind, that the
Sonics on this CD don't sound like the Sonics we know
from "Here Are The Sonics" and "Sonics Boom!" They
sound like every other Wailers wannabes of the period.
There are about half a dozen Wailers covers on here.
Gerry Roslie only appears on two actual tracks on the
CD, the rest of the vocals are done by someone else.
All the live tracks have that "Beatles At The
Star-Club Hamburg" quality. Overall, I'd say this is
really only for the Sonics completist and/or the
Northwest fanatic.

I'd _almost_ bet the Raiders version of "Louie Louie"
on that Jerden compilation was recorded sometime in
the '70s or early '80s. Wasn't there a reunion album
with Mark Lindsay on vocals? Nothing more than
rehashing the old hits, and I'm sure "Louie Louie" was
one of them.

About the Beau Brummels and Johnny Cash: I'd bet the
song on the "San Fran Sessions" box that led you to
"the man in black" was none other than an early
version of "Gentle Wanderin' Ways." Am I right? That's
probably the most Johnny Cash-like song they ever did,
until they got to "Bradley's Barn."

Speaking of the Beau Brummels, I think it's high time
that somebody finds a way to put out a definitive
collection of the Warner Brothers period of the group.
Something with selections from "Beau Brummels '66" (if
only "One Too Many Mornings," which is really the only
good song on the LP), "Triangle" and "Bradley's Barn."
Throw in some unreleased tracks and maybe a track or
two from that '75 live album that's been making the
rounds. It's probably the most underrated, if
underheard period of the BB career. The Autumn period
has been well-covered by Sundazed, but I have this
feeling that they wouldn't be the ones to do the WB
stuff.

In other great WB-related reissue news, Rhino is
releasing the 2-CD set "Just The Right Sound: The
Association Anthology" on February 19th. Till now, the
Association's CD availability has been limited to the
old carbon-copy reissue of "The Association's Greatest
Hits," expensive Japanese CD imports of their albums,
and at least one cheapie with the latter-day Assoc.
lineup doing their big hits and various covers.

The CD package will have liner notes by Dawn Eden,
with quotes from original members and will include
tracks spanning from 1965-81 on various labels, and
two unreleased tracks from their debut album sessions.
This all comes out the same day that Rhino is slated
to release their 2-CD Turtles anthology, "Solid Zinc."

The Beau Brummels could get similar treatment from
Rhino, if the label would just put their minds to it.
They could do a 2-CD set similar to the Turtles and
Association sets (as well as the Yardbirds anthology),
with one disc covering the best of the Autumn years,
and the second disc covering the Warner Brothers era.
I don't assume Sundazed would mind handing the ball
over to Rhino, as they've also reissued the entire
Turtles LP catalog, which will be represented by the
upcoming Rhino set.

Someone else mentioned ideas that they submitted for
Rhino Handmade. I'd also like to hear more by Crabby
Appleton. I have a video copy of the TV show
"Something Else," that also includes the Ides Of March
and schlocky performances by Jack Wild and John Byner.
The footage of Crabby Appleton performing "Go Back" is
definitely the highlight of the show. If anything else
CA did is as good as that song, I'd definitely pick up
a full reissue...

Subject: Re: Sludgy Young Sonics/Austin Power Pop

Another thing nobody has mentioned is that the title
of the album, as well as the cover, is based on the
old LP "The Savage Young Beatles," which included the
Beatles 1961 Hamburg recordings backing expatriate
singer Tony Sheridan.

The Beatles on that LP, much like the Sonics, were
also young but not particular "savage." In fact, it
really wasn't the Beatles at all, it was Tony
Sheridan, and the Beatles were saddled with the
generic moniker "The Beat Brothers." I'm not even sure
if all the tracks on that particular album were
recorded _with_ the Beatles at all, because the Beat
Brothers were whoever happened to be backing Sheridan
at any given time...

Nothing on the whole Norton LP is really worth
airplay. As a whole, it's not something a Sonics/NW
fan is going to want to keep in steady rotation. It's
something to keep on the rack next to your other
Sonics CDs and pull out when/if you're in the mood for
some history...

Re: Soundtracks for future "Austin Powers" movies. If
you're limiting your range to the late '70s-early
'80s, I'd recommend stuff like "Shake Some Action" by
the Flamin Groovies, "When You Find Out" by the
Nerves, "All Kindsa Girls" by the Real Kids, or "Baby
It's Cold Outside" by the Pezband. In other words,
stuff you'd find on discs like Rhino's "Come Out And
Play: American Power Pop I (1975-78)," a disc I just
recently picked up in cutout bin.

I'm really digging this CD. It's got all the hooks I
like in retro pop music. Some fantastic songs I never
heard or just don't remember. Anyone got a
track-listing for Vol. II? I know "What I Like About
You" by the Romantics is on it, so I'd imagine the
tracks are from the early '80s. Any other
recommendations? Keeping in mind, once you getting
into drum machines and that cheesy '80s synth sound,
you've lost me...

As a resident of southern Ohio, I _won't_ be
disappointed that it's Zaremba's group. I know there
was some discussion of the "other" Fleshtones the last
time they played in Columbus. Considering I've never
seen, and rarely heard, either group, I wouldn't know
the difference.

That said, did the "real" Fleshtones record a version
of the Dantes classic "Can't Get Enough Of Your Love"?
I heard it over the PA at a show in Mansfield I went
to MC'd by the former lead singer of the Dantes, and
he told me it was the Fleshtones. Considering the
Dantes and another group called the Fleshtones were
both from Columbus, now I'm a bit confused.

I wouldn't mind checking out the Cynics if they were
to open, but considering they are from PA, I'd imagine
that's the reason they're opening for the F'Tones the
next night in Pittsburgh... Considering there isn't an
opening band listed for the Columbus show, I'd imagine
it will be some local band...maybe the Mendelsonics,
who I think opened for them the last time. Wouldn't it
be funny if it were the Columbus Fleshtones??

Rhino Handmade was working on a comprehensive set that would include
all of their Warner Bros. recordings, including 'Triangle', 'Bradley's Barn'
and (if I remember correctly) about 40 unreleased tracks. Then, well, there
were a few changes at Handmade...There's a pretty good chance that
Handmade's new crew will put something together this year that is similar to
what we were going to do with the old crew...or maybe the Special Products
division will license the tracks to Collector's Choice or Sundazed or who
knows?, some other label. Who knows??

IMO, the first album is pretty good, but the second album -- Rotten To The
Core --isn't as good. Still, I agree...It would make a fine collection. I have a
a CDR of the stuff that gets occasional spins.

That particular identity problem *should* have been resolved. The leader
of the Counterfeit 'Tones contacted the web site six months ago, explained
that he had no knowledge of a NYC band with the same name, but promised
that he would change his band's name. Either that, or he's gonna be
receiving even more threatening email from disgruntled Super Rock fans in
Columbus. If that fails, we're gonna send "Truth Drug" Fuzzco on a secret
mission.

Other American power pop recommendations (late '70s thru early '80s):

 1) Dwight Twilley Band - Sincerely, Twilley Don't Mind, The
    Great Lost Twilley Album
 2) Phil Seymour - Phil Seymour, Phil Seymour 2
 3) (Paul Collins') Beat - The Beat, The Kids Are The Same
 4) The Plimsouls - The Plimsouls, Everywhere At Once
 5) Shoes - Black Vinyl Shoes, Present Tense, Tongue Twister,
    Boomerang
 6) Scruffs - Wanna Meet the Scruffs?
 7) Pezband - Pezband, Laughing in the Dark, Cover to Cover
 8) 20/20 - 20/20, Look Out!
 9) The Pop - The Pop, Go!
10) The Quick - Mondo Deco

Some of these are currently available on CD, most can be
easily found on vinyl for a pittance (The Scruffs and Quick LPs
being notable exceptions). Lemme know if you have trouble finding
them.

The two Rhino DIY British Pop CDs are worth picking up as well.

I would like to second Pfink recommendations, and add a few more: Taxi Boys,
Knack, Moberlys, Pointed Sticks, Modernettes (these two were from
Vancouver).

Interesting...

A friend of mine who is a recording engineer, just worked on a project with Iommi, and guess what?... He plays flute on one track!!! I didn't even know about the Tull Connection.. Has anyone ever heard Iommi play flute? I think it would be a hoot with the stubby fingers and all.

Why does this useless knowledge thrill me so much?

In regards to Tony Iommi playing the flute, I wonder if that's him playing
flute on the song " Planet Caravan " on the " Paranoid " LP, and also on "
Solitude " on the " Master - of Reality " LP ? No one on any of my various
vinyl copies or on the re-mastered CD's is credited anywhere with doing the
flute work on those songs, so maybe it's Tony ???

Yep, Maureen, that's him, according to:
http://www.iommi.com/mstr_collection.htm
His credit is:
Tony Iommi guitar, flute

While waitin' fer my next feature, I thought I'd do a little " inquiring ",
and just answered my own question ... Iommi mentions first playing flute on
the "Paranoid" LP in the following interview ....

http://www.ink19.com/issues/february2001/inkSpots/tonyIommi.html

Mentions it here too ... in a real kool interview. This is part of Joe
Seigler's Black Sabs site, http://www.black-sabbath.com/index.shtml
which is one amazing site ( check out the FAQ for a bit on Tony's 3 weeks
with Jethro - Tull ) and probably the best online source since the Black
Sabbath Appreciation Society is pretty much defunct.

http://www.black-sabbath.com/interviews/tonygeez_0594.html

anyway time to turn to the computer back here over to one of the other gals,
and I think I'll include " Paranoid " in my next set since I have the CD with
me ...

Can you tip me ??? Are you ready for my ... oh yeah ...
