I'd recommend any of the following, so here in no order other than what I
can remember right now ...

Big Star - #1 Record and Radio City
Flamin Groovies - Shake Some Action LP
Marshall Crenshaw - " Something's Gonna Happen / She Can't Dance 12" , the
self titled debut LP ( an absolute classic ), Field Day LP, etc anything
almost by him
Dwight Twilley - Sincerely and Twilley Don't Mind LPs, Scuba Divers LP (
amazing )
The Dbs - Stands for Decibels LP and Repercussions LP , plus the " I
Thought You Wanted to Know " 45, and Chris Stamey's " the Summer Sun " 45
Sneakers - In the Red EP, and the Sneakers 7" ep
NRBQ - " Ridin' In My Car " single
Rockin' Horse - " Oh Carol " single
Poppees - " If She Cries " single
Plimsouls - Zero Hour EP, The Plimsouls LP, A Million Miles Away 12",
Everywhere at - Once LP
The Romantics - The Romantics & National Breakout LPs, along with the "
Little White - Lies " 45 and the " Tell it to Carrie " 45
The Shoes - the Bomp version of " Tomorrow Night " which slays the later
version and the Black Vinyl Shoes LP
The Last - LA Explosion LP
The Scruffs - Wanna Meet the ... LP plus some non LP 45's
The Michael Guthrie Band - Direct Hits LP
Third Floor Strangers - Last Chance LP
The Toms - The Toms LP
Milk n' Cookies - Milk n' Cookies LP and the " God Friends " single
Dirty Looks - Dirty Looks LP
Dirty Angels - " Tell Me " either version, off either LP
The Quick - Mondo Deco LP and even better, the " In Tune With Our Times " EP
which the band did as a promo fan club type thing that the folks at Penniman
Records ( who did the Nerves 10" ) in Spain should think about re-issuing
Pezband - " Baby it's Cold Outside " off the first self - titiled LP, and "
Love Goes Underground " off the " Laughing in the Dark " LP are my faves but
there's some nice stuff on all 3 LP's
The Pop - " Down on the Boulevard " off the self - titiled LP, " Shakeaway "
off the second LP " Go ! ", and " Solitaire " off the " Hearts and Knives " LP
Bongos - Drums Along the Hudson LP, it's not all powerpop but it's great stuff
20 /20 - " Giving it All " 45 their first 2 LP's each have a few neat trax too
The Nerves - that new 10 " EP of the original " hanging On the Telephone " EP
( has 2 bonus trax ) is a must of course
( Paul Collins ) The Beat - The Beat LP, The Kids are the Same LP
The Skunks - The Skunks gets a little " new wavy " in places
Just Colour - " growing Up American " EP
Moberlys - The Moberlys LP
Blue Ash - No More No Less LP
Piper ( yes indeed Billy Squire's old band ) - " Can't Wait " and" Drop By
and Stay ", off the " Can't Wait " LP, some of the rest of the songs on the
LP are what one might call powerpop as well, but these are two are the real
standouts. By far the best things Billy Squire ever did ...
Raspberries - nuff said !!!

Power Pop ... You know LA LA LAS with Power Chords ... hangin' up my old
skinny tie and headin' fer bed .... maureen

the Flamin Groovies, "When You Find Out" by the
Nerves, "All Kindsa Girls" by the Real Kids, or "Baby
It's Cold Outside" by the Pezband. In other words,
stuff you'd find on discs like Rhino's "Come Out And
Play: American Power Pop I (1975-78)," a disc I just
recently picked up in cutout bin.

I'm really digging this CD. It's got all the hooks I
like in retro pop music. Some fantastic songs I never
heard or just don't remember. Anyone got a
track-listing for Vol. II? I know "What I Like About
You" by the Romantics is on it, so I'd imagine the
tracks are from the early '80s. Any other
recommendations? Keeping in mind, once you getting
into drum machines and that cheesy '80s synth sound,
you've lost me...

That would be the one and only, original Fleshtones

<<<< In other great WB-related reissue news, Rhino is releasing the 2-CD set
"Just The Right Sound: The Association Anthology" on February 19th. ....The
CD package will have liner notes by Dawn Eden >>>

And I helped. :> I did a good deal of research for her and corrected some
factual errors in her first draft. But my main contribution, and the one she
was most grateful for, was that when she had yet to acquire contact info for
any members of the band, I tracked down leader Terry Kirkman's current
whereabouts and passed that info on to Dawn. She called him right away, and
Terry very kindly offered assistance and gave her the contact info for
everyone else in the band.

Sure enough, she was soon interviewing various Associates, as well as some
people close with the band, like producers, session musicians, mangers, etc.,
and even the widow and son of the late Brian Cole. I believe she never did
get a chance to interview band members Russ Giguere or Ted Bluechel, but I
know she was indeed in contact with them and that they read and approved her
notes.

As you'll see when the set comes out, Dawn did a wonderful job with what
could very well be the most thorough historical essay on The Association ever
written.

Having just resubscribed after hassles with an old address several
months back i managed to reply to the wrong address

so I missed saying

1) are the Blodwyn Pig lps any good -what with all the talk about Mick
abrahams/Jethro Tull I came across a track -same old song or
something on a cd compi and it sounds god -whats the rest of the stuff
like

2)Cumular Limit -stupidly didn't pick that up when i saw it in stand out
records over Xmas -then got back here and read that it was being
discontinued - dumb I take it it is worth every bit of the hype

3) really surprised on reading the Chess Box sets review in the George
Harrison covered Uncut because it looks like the reviewer is calling
Howling wolf and Bo Diddley one offs -which looks like he means one hit
wonders pretty dumb even for a mainstream reviewer

4) Liliput -whats the name of the band fronted by Steve Morrisey's only
adolescent friend Linder? is it Ludus? are Lilliput related to Malaria?
or am i just getting confused because they're both female bands funny
that since i've just been trying to convince a couple of people that its
not impossible for women to ROCK -which might not be the best
description of those bands -but i haven't heard them so...

5) whats the story on the new 13th Floor elevator box set -is it
EVERYTHING? I hear its 3 cds so i coulsd see it fitting everything on
if space was used wisely

6) the material on the Trash Box is more treble heavy than it needs to
be ain't it? mixed that way due to compiler's taste?

7) how much stuff is coming out as Trojan 2 cd compis -I've got the
Toots and tHe maytals one and its great -could do with several others
siince its an area i know far worse than i ought

8)any views on Lawrence of newark by Larry Young or Inspiration
Information by shuggie Otis I got both of them recently and they're cool
though I think i prefer the Otis stuff from the lp before freedom flight

stevo

Np Jam In tHe City/Modern World -disc 1 of box set thingy

    stevo -
fuck yeah, "cumular limit" is a must-have if you dig the yardbirds, there
are some alt mono mixes of "little games" tracks on there, but the good stuff
- - the essential stuff - is the HOT session they did for the german "beat beat
beat" series - "shapes of things," "happenings 10 years time ago" (a great
page solo on there, just awesome), "over under sideways down," and "i'm a
man." then there's the 4/68 new york sessions, the last 4 studio recordings
by the band - "avron knows," "spanish blood," garnet mimms' "my baby,"
and....shit can't remember the other title....jim mccarty sings it. the real
keepers from those 4 are "avron" and "spanish blood." "avron" has some wicked
page riffing, that fuckin fat fuzz sound he got on "think about it," and
"spanish blood" is a very cool evocative spanish/flamenco-style guitar piece,
with a cool recitative by mccarty, it's been well-decsribed elsewhere as a
very spaghetti-western leone-type thing, and i think that about covers it - a
piece of dusty spaghetti-western psych...totally essential. "spanish blood"
is one of the very best "archival" type pieces of previously unreleased
material i have ever heard by a major band....this isn't a curiosity...this
is a full-on piece of WORK.
also, there's the french TV version of "dazed and confused" which is also
very cool - another great page solo, mccarty is kicking ass on the drums &
relf at is his wailin coolest...
where did you hear this is going outta print? just curious - it doesn't
really surprise me, nothing this good ever stays around for long enough.
bottom line on this sucker is buy on sight!!

There's a great segment on a Black Sabbath live/interview vid I have simply
called "B.S. Story, Vol 1 - the Ozzy Years" IT's like something outta Spinal
Tap. Iommi tells of a time they were playing in Amsterdam, and someone had
given them this kiler hash that thery all smoked and got realy stoned on.
Then they went on stage, and during a song where Iommi did a little flute
solo, he says he's piping away but not really hearing the flute make much
sound, and after a few minutes he realizes he's not even holding the flute
near his lips!!

It works the other way as well.

When I separated from my wife I was left with her record collection.
Needless to say, I didn't want her John Denver and Gordon Lightfoot albums
anywhere near my psych or garage stuff. Anyhow, one Saturday evening I sat
on the front porch drinking beer and frisbeeing her albums on to the road in
front of the house. There was something kind of cool seeing trucks, buses
and passenger cars driving over her stuff. Anyhow, one of the neighbors
eventually came over and kindly suggested I might want to stop throwing LPs
before I hit a car ... never dawned on me I might actually hit something.
Luckily, by that time I was down to a greatest hits package and a Starland
Vocal Band LP. They ended up in the trash.

Several months later she asked for her albums and was dumbfounded when I told
her what had happened ...

Ah, such fond memories ...

Rhino track-listings. I once had one of the UK comps,
which I had bought just to hear the Searchers track
("Hearts In Her Eyes," one of their '70s Sire
recordings). It didn't sound enough like the Searchers
I was used to, and I wasn't really receptive to the
rest at the time.

I wouldn't mind hearing the Scruffs album, the liner
notes to the CD said they mixed New Wave and
Merseybeat, then went on to say that "My Mind" was one
of the "more ambitious tracks" on the album. It did
have more of a Who sound than a Merseybeat sound, but
I'm sure the album would be right up my alley.

It's funny how the Raspberries set out to replicate
the sound of the Beatles and the Beach Boys, then so
many of the '70s bands that followed them tried to
sound like the Raspberries.

Speaking of the Raspberries, has anyone heard the
newest Raspberries album "Refreshed"? It's only two of
the original members (including Wally Bryson), one of
the later joiners, and a couple of extra guys, and
Eric Carmen didn't go in with them, but it does have a
good 70's power-pop sound. Sort of a comparison with
some of the Raspberries LP tracks that Carmen didn't
sing on, like "Hard To Get Over A Heartbreak" and
"Last Dance." Just wondering if the rest of the CD
(I've heard RA clips) is worth checking out?

I don't think "Something Else" was really a "rock TV
show." There was of course, the Texas show "Sump'n
Else," which hosted performances by the 13th Floor
Elevators (who have a new best-of coming out on Fuel
2000, by the way) and numerous lesser Lonestar garage
bands.

I don't think I could stomach too much of the '70s
"Something Else" although there are numerous comp
videos out. The show was hosted by John Byner, who I
think was also on "Laugh-In," sponsored by the Dairy
Association, and the particular episode I have on tape
has him schmoozing around some scantily clad Charlies
Angels-type gals while he takes them on a tour of
Catalina.

In the process, he shows up at a resort hotel lobby,
where the Ides Of March are shown miming to "Vehicle,"
then runs into Jack Wild (of "H.R. Pufnstuf"),
literally, on a bicycle, who then goes into some
kiddie-pop song that makes Davy Jones sound like
Robert Plant. Eventually, a boat carrying Crabby
Appleton washes up on shore. Naturally, they all have
their rock and roll gear, and launch into "Go Back."
Unfortunately, the brief 5 or so minutes of the Ides
Of March and Crabby Appleton are too little respite
from Byner's cheesy, dated '70s humor.

The saddest, most sadistic tale of a break up I ever heard was when a buddy
of mine and his gal split up. She didn't take his record collection, she had
no interest in it.

Instead, she went through it, picking out LPs that she knew were his
favorites and scratched up the vinyl with a key and then carefully placed
them back on the shelves. They acted as a few dozen time bombs, it took a few
years before he had discovered them all.

He's still twitching.

Speaking of the beatles w/ Tony sherridan, I was
wondering about this Bear Family reissue of the
Beatles live in Hamburg. I noticed that it has been
reissued as a 2 cd set w/ the exact same track listing
on each disc, one being the mono versions and one
being the stereo versions. Can anybody tell me which
is the better mix? Because they are sold individually
(atleast on ebay). If it is gonna make all the
difference in the world (like the Who's first album),
I would like to know. Also, does anyone know where the
vinyl version of this release is sold?

Subject: Poptopia!/Emmit Rhodes

Another power-pop series I'd like to look up is
Rhino's "Poptopia!" that had three volumes dedicated
to the '70s, '80s, and '90s. Unfortunately, I've not
seen it in the stores lately, there's no mention of
them on Rhino's websites, so I'd assume they're out of
print. Isn't there still a Poptopia festival in
California.

One powerpopper no one has mentioned is Emmit Rhodes,
who put out a bunch of great self-produced
McCartneyesque songs in the '70s after the demise of
the Merry-Go-Round. There are two solo Emmit Rhodes
comps out there, one in the US and one in the UK.

AND, I just recently noticed that there is an Emmit
Rhodes song on the soundtrack to the movie "The Royal
Tenenbaums." The song is "Lullabye," and I'd assume
it's one of his '70s recordings. Rhodes is someone I'd
like to see release a new album in my lifetime...

Music taste being subjective, I politely disagree. The rest of the first Crabby
Appleton album was not "undistinguished 1970 hippie rock". For those who
don't know, Michael Fennelly was the man behind Crabby Appleton. He was
a session guitarist/vocalist in The Millennium and Sagitarius, and Crabby
Appleton's "other songs" sound much more like these two bands, which I
wouldn't call "undistinguished hippie rock". Of course, that's just my opinion.
"Go Back" is the rockin'est song, definitely, but the rest isn't bad for what it
is.

I can't seem to find a discography of The Joneses
online. I know they had the LP "Keeping up with" and
their first single was Jonestown b/w Criminals. I
heard they also put out a 12" but I don't know the
name or the track listing of it. Then probably some
compilation tracks. Can anybody help me out w/ any
information?

Subject: Re: Bad dating stories? Fights over music?

Greetings,

I can top all that. In 1993, I was seeing this girl. We lived in the same
dorm at ECU. Needless to say, she was a very cruel person. After the
first week of our relationship, she started to be impossible. At that time,
I was really into my British shoegazing moody pop of the Pale Saints,
Ride, Lush, My Bloody Valentine. She was pretty much a top 40 gal
that would listen occasionally to the Jesus and Mary Chain (which was
sort of cool) and Nine Inch Nails (which wasn't that cool). And she
liked Enigma (YUCK). Anyway we broke up around Halloween and
decided to remain "friends." She was intolerable. We had a terrible
argument before Thanksgiving Break. Some of the stuff she said
hurt me so bad. When I drove back to campus, I called her to
have a talk. She agreed, and I went to her dorm room. As she started
to ramble, she paused (as I was grabbing the CD player I bought
for her birthday), her CD's that I bought her, the flower base from
the flowers that I bought her, and some of the clothes that I bought
her. I told her that I didn't even want to be friends anymore. She
was in shock. Bearing in mind that it was a small dorm, the word
got around. I was a BASTARD in the eyes of the whole dorm.
The only person that gave me emotional support was this art
school girl that I became close friends with. She hated Mary
as well for what she made me go through. The point of the
story is to tell about what I went through as well as to mention
where the band I'm in now got its name.

The Scary Marries was named after Mary Courson, the girl I dated
briefly in 1993. She's mean and lowdown with sucky taste in
music. But anyway, here's my story. I hope some of y'all don't
think that I'm a bad guy as a result of this. She made me more
mad than anyone else I dated before or after.

After Mary, I dated this real neat girl named Anna Campbell. She
was cool, gorgeous, and had good taste in music. Sadly, it hardly
lasted anytime. Her parents yanked her out of school. The long
distance thing was not meant to work out. She was like a cross
between Twiggy and Winona Ryder (but with reddish hair). We
remained friends to this day.

Cheers,
Melvin Little

Several months later she asked for her albums and was dumbfounded when I
told
 her what had happened ...

 Ah, such fond memories ...

i wouldn't trust a band who claimed to be influenced by just the cramps. i
dig 'em, but i've seen/heard too many jive-ass imitations of their schtick by
now. however, if a band is influenced by what the cramps LISTEN TO (the
original older stuff), then build their sound around that, 9 outta 10 times
they're gonna be good. its a cliche, but we all gotta go "back to the roots"
sometimes. if a band digs the cramps but thinks carl perkins was a silly
oldies act, they're not worth the time or support
