Dear Bompers,

I was told about them being called Kleenex, but I was told they were
British. If they are Swiss, then it is my mistake.

Liliput was a all-female Swiss band formerly known
as Kleenex. Liliput had an album on Rough Trade and
Kleenex put out an EP and had a track on the "Wanna
 Buy a Bridge" comp.

Malaria was a German band, not related.

Wow, i see you're really stoked on this guy now! What did ya do, buy a whole
bunch of his albums (and there are many) off Ebay? I still think EXUMA II is
a hot disc. I've only seen/heard one other Exuma album since then (Nov.), and
it sucks. I forget the title (was it RESURRECTION?), but its the one where
he's doing Paul McCartney's "Monkberry Moon Delight." This was an attempt by
Kama Sutra to clean up his sound, and it failed. How many Exuma records do
you have by now? They good, too?

James
P.S. Ever seen the 1970 flick JOE? If not, keep an eye open for the scene
where Susan Sarandon and her dope-dealing boyfriend are toking up in their
bedroom. He turns on the radio and out comes an Exuma song. Literally! He
appears on one of the two JOE soundtracks.

track..They also has another 12"EP on Trigon Records called "Tits &

I can't seem to find a discography of The Joneses

their first single was Jonestown b/w Criminals. I
heard they also put out a 12" but I don't know the
name or the track listing of it. Then probably some
compilation tracks. Can anybody help me out w/ any

They recently did a story on Emitt Rhodes in either
Goldmine or Discoveries. He apparently suffers from
a debilitating case of clinical depression, so a
new album is unlikely anytime soon . However, there's
been talk about maybe releasing a CD of stuff from
his stockpile of home-recorded demo material from the
past 30 years.

Yes! It's from his self-titled LP from 1970, and it's put to great use in
the movie.
Emmitt Rhodes had four solo albums out in the 1970s: the aforementioned
"Emmitt Rhodes", "The American Dream" (really his first solo album, recorded
for A&M with a few musicians from the Wrecking Crew), "Mirror", and
"Farewell To Paradise".

Yes, Mike Fennelly. I knew one of the members of CA
was from Sagittarius and the Millenium, but I couldn't
remember whether it was Fennelly or Joey Stec. Of
course I know it wasn't Curt Boettcher... If anything
else on the CA album is like those other two groups,
it's a great album no matter what.

Just surfed over to the official Emmit Rhodes website,
which has RA files for just about everything ever
released on Rhodes and the Merry Go Round. Now I am
hoping for a legit MGR reissue more than ever. That
stuff was great. Had a chance to pick up the original
LP for 15 bucks a few years ago, hesitated too long...

Too bad Russ Giguere wasn't able to be interviewed for
the Association's CD set, but I'm looking forward to
it anyway. I do remember that when I saw the
Association at the Ohio State Fair with the
Buckinghams and the Classic Rock All-Stars, they were
the only group whose members didn't hang around for a
meet-and-greet. Giguere and Larry Ramos were the only
two original (at least '60s) members of the band, but
they put on a good show, that was only slightly marred
by unAssociationlike covers. Their stage appearance
left something to be desired -- white suits with black
string ties. Larry Ramos looked like a Hawaiian
Colonel Sanders.

Can't wait till Feb. 19...

Speaking of the beatles w/ Tony sherridan, I was
wondering about this Bear Family reissue of the
Beatles live in Hamburg. I noticed that it has been
reissued as a 2 cd set w/ the exact same track listing
on each disc, one being the mono versions and one
being the stereo versions. Can anybody tell me which
is the better mix? Because they are sold individually
(atleast on ebay). If it is gonna make all the
difference in the world (like the Who's first album),
I would like to know. Also, does anyone know where the
vinyl version of this release is sold?

- - -Danny>>>

I think you might be confusing two seperate releases. There's the Bear
Family "Beatles Bop -Hamburg Says," which is a double set that comes with a
huge hard cover book That's all their recordings w/ Tony Sheridan and is
studio stuff - one disc is mono, the other stereo. Then there's Secret Trax
"The Star Club" which is a boot, but very cool. That's the live stuff. I go
into detail about both of these in my column in the new Hit List, BTW.

The bands second LP was disappointing but there are over 90 minutes of demos
which deserve to be released. They should have been as big as the Raspberries

Raspberries could have hits with 3 minute pop songs.)

There are cover versions of this tune by Fumie Hosokawa and by Belle &

Subject: Show Report: Dave Edmunds at Maxwells in Hoboken, NJ

Last night - Saturday, January 26th -- Dave Edmunds returned to Maxwells
in Hoboken, NJ on his solo performance tour to offer another excellent
evening of music. Unlike his first appearance there 2-3 months ago, Dave
supplemented portions of the show with a second guitar player with whom
he shared vocal harmonies and a pair of horn players (Trumpet &
Saxophone). I wasn't able to find out who the second guitar player was,
if Dave mentioned his name on stage, I didn't catch it but he did say
the 2 horn players were from the Memphis Horns, but that might have been
a joke as he also called the trumpet player La Bamba, so I assume the 2
brassy gents were from LaBamba & The Hub Caps, a longtime Jersey Shore
band. If anyone knows for sure, feel free to correct me.

I did not take notes so bear with me as I recall some of the songs he
did. He opened as he did last time with an instrumental to warm up. He
then went into a medium tempo version of "Blue Moon of Kentucky, which
he segued into Jerry Reed's "The Claw." Dave was in excellent form and
wowed the crowd with his finger pickin'. This time around, he did many
more vocals. Some of the other songs he did were a great rendition of
"Warmed Over Kisses, Left Over Love," "Mystery Train," "I Knew The
Bride," "Singing The Blues," "When Will I Be Loved" (Everly Bros),
"Queen of Hearts," and many more. Among his intrumentals was a cover of
Mason Williams' "Classical Gas." For the encore, he did "Here Comes The
Sun" as a tribute to his recently departed chum, George Harrison and
ended the show by strapping on an electric guitar and rockin' out to his
first hit when he was in the band, Love Sculpture, "Sabre Dance,"
highlighted by the horn section joining in.

I'd have to say, while the first solo show I saw was great, this time,
with the addition of the other players during portions of the evening
and more vocals by Dave, this show was even better!!!!

Only low points were some idiots in the audience, one who shouted out
"SABRE DANCE!" in a phony british accent after EVERY single number and a
drunken woman standing next to me who kept pressing against me and
bumping into me on purpose, we're talking a huge invasion of my space --
she knew it and kept eyeing me the whole night for a reaction. Were I
not a gentleman, I would've smacked her and her equally bombed
companion. Why didn't I move? The place was completely packed and I have
a good spot close to the stage where I had a great view of Dave! Had I
moved, I'd have ended up way in back somewhere.

But all in all, if and when Dave Edmunds comes back to the area, I shall
be there with bells on! He's the best!

Hi - The following just came into the Garage and may be of interest to some
Bompers. SC

- --

The Tol Puddle Martyrs, the second incarnation of Peter & the Silhouettes,
produced some of the rarest and most sought after recordings from the
killer 60s punk period. The .Martyrs developed a huge cult following in
Central & Northern Victoria with their wild and raucous fuzz guitar/organ
drenched material.

Their interactive CD features 8 tracks, 6 original recordings and two
reworkings of the classics, 'Claudette Jones' and 'Time Will Come',
featured on the recent album release 'Time Will Come'as recorded by 'The
Secrets', Rechter's current brainchild. A web site comprising rare photos,
artwork and history of this influential 60s garage band is included in this
package, as well as the original 1968 film clip to the Tol Puddle Martyrs,
'Time Will Come'.

Ian McFarlane, renowned Australian rock historian writes : " The moody,
magnificent 'Time Will Come' is certainly one of the great Aussie
psychedelic recordings; an enigmatic, organ drenched trip that still sounds
amazing today. And this new version sounds damm fine too".

It sounds like Japanese to me. It's on a CD called Gainsbourg Tribute '95. It
also features Kaho Minami singing "La Chanson De Prevert" and Mari Natsuki
doing "Sea Sex And Sun." It's on Columbia.

There is also a version by Kim 'Kay, there is a clip of that one at

I agree, INSPIRATION was the best Shuggie album, of the three he did. I've
expounded on him at length on the list several times by now but I will repeat
myself for your benefit, since you've been gone (welcome back to the list,
Steve). HERE COMES SHUGGIE OTIS (1970) is mainly a bunch of undistinguished
blues jams. INSPIRATION (1974) is a Fucking Masterpiece of 1970's
experimental soul music, right up there with period Stevie, Marvin,
Funkadelic, Bar-Kays, Gil Scott-Heron, Miles Davis, etc. If you like soul
w/rock overtones, this is a masterpiece of the genre. FREEDOM FLIGHT (1972)
seems torn between the blues of his previous elpee and the futuristic
rock-soul of INSPIRATION.

good 70's power-pop sound. Sort of a comparison with
some of the Raspberries LP tracks that Carmen didn't
sing on, like "Hard To Get Over A Heartbreak" and
"Last Dance." Just wondering if the rest of the CD

A friend of mine has REFRESHED and says its' really good. As for the absence
of Eric Carmen, those piano-led mushy love ballads of his are not missed.

Thanks to Laurent for mentioning some Canadian Power Pop!!! I'll go on
record as saying that The(Paul Collins)Beat "S/T" Lp is the greatest power
pop record ever! Now, what about The Rubinoos??? If you can call these guys
wrote some amazing tunes! Y'know what I love about collecting Power Pop?
It's gotta be the cheapest genre to collect...I know I've picked up most of
the records that have been listed in this string for under $8 Canadian(about
$5 US)...you can't go wrong!

yup, and what a godsend it was (filled in all the gaps and a few that

never have played them again (like i've said before, i'm too lazy to spin 3
