The Clear Light CD is also available in Germany, without bonus tracks.
We've got an earlier single by BRAIN TRAIN,: Black Roses (diff.
version)/Me, both written by Lubahn. These are more punkier tracks than the
Clear Light album, and would fit nicely as openers on a compilation.
Anybody knows more about this? <snip>

Here's the lowdown from Fuzz, Acid And Flowers -

The Brain Train

BOB SEALS gtr, vcls A B

45:
1 Black Roses/Me (Titan FF-1738) Oct 1967

The full story of this band has finally been revealed thanks to Lee
Joseph's compilation Take The Brain Train To The Third Eye (Bacchus
Archives BA1147) 2000, annotated by Mike Stax. The theme of this
recommended retrospective is the artists and releases in the hands of Bud
Mathis, a boxer-turned-music-entrepreneur based on the Sunset Strip in the
60s.

Originally known as Garnerfield Sanitarium (line-up 'A') with an unusual
double-drummer configuration, this local L.A. group were heard and picked
up by Bud Mathis in 1966. Through him they acquired bassist Doug Lubahn but
lost Wanda Watkins (who'd join another Mathis act The Joint Effort) and
were rechristened The Brain Train (line-up 'B').

In late '66/early '67 they laid down Black Roses (written by Wolfgang Dios,
a songwriter signed by Mathis) and Me. Mathis took these on the label trail
and managed to get the group a contract with Elektra. At that point he was
persuaded by Elektra to let Paul Rothchild take over as the group's
manager. This triggered the band's final stage of metamorphosis into the
venerated Clear Light - losing Robbie Robison and gaining Cliff DeYoung
(vcls) and Ralph Schuckett (keyb'ds).

In September 1967 Clear Light's first 45 was released - She's Ready To Be
Free / Black Roses (Elektra 45622). Bud Mathis had retained the rights to
the Brain Train material, and as this wasn't going to be used, he leased
out the original recordings to Titan, who put out the excellent and
sought-after Brain Train 45 the following month.

Black Roses is very similar to the finished Elektra product, where
Byrdsy-jangle confronts Yardbirds-style-rave-ups. Me veers towards sheer
dementia with crashing distorted guitars, demonic drumming (ala 7 And 7 Is)
and a chorus of eerie chants, reminiscent again of The Yardbirds (Still I'm
Sad).

Both sides of the Titan 45 and an unreleased instrumental take of Me appear
on Take The Brain Train... Me had previously appeared on The Chosen Few
Vol. 2 and 30 Seconds Before The Calico Wall (CD).

I don't think so. It was the first multiplex in our area and only about 4-5
years old at the time. It always had movies when they came out, at least
from what I can remember.

[The local second-run house was the one right in my hometown, which reopened
in '77 showing movies for 77 cents. (The next year it was 78; then 79.
Eventually, they settled on 99 cents on weeknights and $1.25 on weekends.)
When movies got to the Northport Theatre, I'd sometimes see them a few times
if I really liked them.

The Northport Theatre was refurbished a couple years back, but is no longer
cheap. On the other hand, I don't think it's 2nd-run, either. It's pretty
nice-looking... A good old *real-sized* movie house, complete with balcony.]

That trick was pretty popular when I was in college (we used to get one porn
movie on campus per year). Usually, people would bring in a small plastic
bottle of the stuff with only about a half an inch of dishwashing liquid in
it. Then they'd go to the bathroom and put warm water inside. Finally,
they'd get an Alka Seltzer and throw it in. Then, at the appropriate moment,
they'd flick the top and...

For a low budget horror flick like that there would only be so many prints
made, these would be sent out by the distributor to whoever they could get to
book it. The length of a first run for a movie like this at that time could
be quite a long time.

While a big Hollywood picture might open nationwide on several hundred or
well over a thousand screens at the same time, small budget exploitation
flicks would usually concentrate on specific regions of the country at a
time. For an example of this rent the DVD of Phantasm which includes a 1979
appearance by the director on a local Florida chat show talking about the
movie and how well it had done in other parts of the country.

Remember, in the mid 80s the multiplex was just starting to kill of
independently owned theaters. The video boom was still in its infancy. If a
promoter of an exploitation flick could show boffo box office in one region
it was a great selling point for the next region.

The early to mid 80s were still a very exciting time for seeing oddball film.
The suburban twin cinema in my neighborhood might as well have been located
in the heart of Times Square, it was a constant stream of Italian gore
flicks, T&A movies and every kind of exploitation film you could imagine. I
still remember some of the bizarre double bills that they put together, like
The Secret Policeman's Ball and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Neither film was
a current release in 1983, but the place was packed on a Friday night.

So Blair's memory of when he saw The Mutilator makes perfect sense when
considering the context of that period, the last gasp of the Great American
Movie Going Experience.

Yeah, I'd like to get ahold of that LP too. Two of the
five MGR songs on that Emmit Rhodes solo comp are from
the '80s Rhino LP, and are as good as anything else
I've heard from the original album. Unfortunately, in
putting in the various b-sides and rarities, they left
off some good tracks from the LP.

A reissue of the first album, with the extra tracks
from the "Best Of" thrown on, would be enough to
satisfy me, even if they didn't unearth any other
unreleased MGR recordings. The Palace Guard
compilation Jeff Lemlich alluded to sounds like it
might be really good, too. If it does ever come out,
well, maybe it will spark enough demand for the MGR
album to get it out, too.

If I ever find the original album again, though, this
time I won't pass it up.

And The Cosmic Dropouts (previous band) will reunite soon for a small tour and a new 7''EP on Sneakers Rds (small norwegian label). They also think about reissuin' the 3 Cosmic Dropouts LP or a best of compilation. The C. Dropouts were one of the best garage 60's european acts from 88 to 93. You sure know that their leader (Morten Henriksen, singer/guit with the Yum Yums) used to play in The Vikings with Steve Baise and two guys from Turbonegro.

I received the disc as a gift and enjoyed it a great deal. The version of
"Space Oddity" is great. It never clicked how sad the opening lines of "Band
On The Run" are until I heard those kids sing it - "never seeing no one nice
again," that's pretty heavy for McCartney, and they tap into that.

The disc is also full of covers of Beach Boys songs, a half dozen in all,
some quite sublime. The arrangements, which are heavy on the chimes, suit
Brian's music well. I don't think I've ever heard a cover of "You're So Good
To Me" until I got this disc.

And the little girl singing "Desperado" will break your heart.

I read that the kids and their teacher are getting back together for a new
VH1 show.

Anybody that grades a record MINT is full of shit 99.999%
of the time. According to Goldmine's standards, a MINT record
is "absolutely perfect in every way, certainly never played".
Even a record that's still sealed shouldn't be listed as MINT,
as it could be warped or flawed in some way upon opening.

In other words, there really ain't too many records out there
that can accurately be graded MINT. NEAR MINT is normally the
highest grade you'd give something, in practice.

that's kinda funny, i never knew who those other 2 guys in the vikes
were...a pleasant enough record (for a throwaway), i guess, but still kinda
silly to imagine this was mort's highest profile release (here in the
states, at least). glad to hear the yums are still plugging and count me in
for reishes of the dropouts (the only one that i ever laid eyes on was the
first one...fortunately, i've laid ears onto burns of the other two courtesy
of some kind soul). later

np: joey miserable and the worms
saw some chardiet scribble on that other list and decided it'd been too long
since i'd listened to these nuts. besides, simon and baise kinda tie
together...they've both written "strikeout king". ;)

I have a bad date story, I saw the Slickee Boys at the UMD in I think
1987 with a friend and about halfway into the show she just blurts out,
"I don't want to see any more of this high school, so punk rock it
hurts, bullshit. We're leaving! O saw enough of this high school
bullshit at [local tiki restaurant turned punk rock hangout] King Kongs"
I stopped, scrunched up my nose and looked at her and was like, "what
the hell? When did you ever go to King Kongs?" She grabbed my arm,
pulled me out of the crowd and said she was leaving, I seem to remember
telling her I'd drive over to her apartment later with pizza, but I was
going to watch the rest of the show. She stormed out of the place,
screaming about punk rockers, and immediately and pretty much for the
only time in my life, her friends pounced on me telling me she was no
good and why didn't I go to this or that party with them [wink wink,
nudge nudge] instead. We're not talking one of her friends, I mean like
3 separate women did this. We're not talking about some super-cool
angst ridden punk dude, we're talking about me.

Instead of going to their party I made sure I got some Slickee Boys
station IDs for the radio station and I think I interviewed the
headliners who were a miller beer band, record geek that I was.

It did not end that relationship, though for the remainder of the time I
would rib her about the unbearable punk rock screech of the slickee boys.

Her singular King Kongs experience turned out to be the proto-emo song
stylings of Marginal Man.

Not that anybody may care..but the Ides
doing "Vehicle" on that Something Else video
was chopped up by the show's editors. They
cut out the guitar solo for one.
And to James... The second Crabby Appleton
lp is the same as the first for me-unmemorable and
pretty much hippie rock. Tho' I do like the hit from
the 1st lp and maybe 1 or 2 other cuts. Dr. M.

Wow! I just heard the same story first hand from the husband of a
separated couple. Only She took some of his $ 45's and gouged 'em
up with her thumb nail! That kind of thing is just pure evil! Dr. M.
ps-they recently got back together. Hope those 45's are insured now!

Varase Sarabande which has 5 songs by The Merry Go Round.

When I saw them last week in New Haven, Victor and the bass player
dropped their pants but didn't DO anything, so , uh, what did you see
that would resemble gay porn? Yeah, they KICKED ass, but I didn't see
anything else being done.
