Do you really wanna know?! Okay, well, no asses (sic) were involved, or

Folks,

Another show done and in the archive, with Jean doing the solo thing this
time. As always we say thanks to the artists and labels responsible for
producing tonight's music, and to the loyal listeners who encourage us to
air it every week! (For seven years now, Radio Rumpus Room has been
broadcast Fridays at 9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3
Minneapolis and 106.7 St. Paul. The show also streams live on the Internet,
and as always, our most recent show is archived in its entirety in
RealAudio. YOU CAN LISTEN TO THIS ENTIRE 90 MINUTES OF AUDIO MAYHEM RIGHT
NOW! Just link up through the RRR web page ANY old time to listen to this
noise and catch Jean and Ron spouting the usual fabrications and
preposterous "statements of fact!")

Here's what got cranked in the Radio Rumpus Room garage on Friday, January
25, 2002:

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (always locally recorded!)

More-Tishans -- (I've Got) Nowhere to Run (Orange, Sugar & Chocolate:
Psychedelic Microdots of the Sixties, Vol. 1; Sundazed)

"(I've Got) Nowhere to Run" was the lone single by this band from
Stillwater, Minnesota. It was released in 1967 on the Peak label, a
subsidiary of Metrobeat.

Other Four -- Searching for Your Love (Fuzz, Flaykes, & Shakes, Vol. 2: The
Day Breaks at Dawn; Bacchus Archives)
Masters Apprentices -- War or Hands of Time (Nuggets II box; Rhino)
Buffalo Springfield -- Down to the Wire (Buffalo Springfield box; Elektra)

Columbia/Epic/Legacy)
Charline Arthur -- Soft Hearted Gal (Welcome to the Club; Bear Family)
Accident Clearinghouse -- The One That Got Away (Written in Rope; OBT)
Robbie Fulks -- Donna on My Mind (13 Hillbilly Giants; Bloodshot)
Blasters -- Border Radio (self-titled; Slash)

Gregory Dee and the Avanties -- The Grind (The Big Hits of Mid-America: The
Soma Records Story 1963-1967; Plum)
Wailers -- Tall Cool One (At the Castle; Norton)
Cordell Jackson with George Reinecke and the Mud Bugs -- Memphis Drag (7";
Sympathy for the Record Industry)
Dexter Romweber -- Rockin' Maybelle (Chased by Martians; Manifesto)
Royal Fingers -- Echo Rocket '66 (Continental Magazine #9 CD sampler)
5678s -- Edie Is a Sweet Candy (The 5678s Can't Help It)

Searchers -- Don't Throw Your Love Away (The Definitive Collection; Castle)
Moviees -- So Much (Become One of Them; Sundazed)
Fortune & Maltese and the Phabulous Pallbearers -- I Just Don't Care
(self-titled; Get Hip)
Beau Brummels -- Laugh, Laugh (Nuggets box; Rhino)

Jean Shepard -- You Win Again (The Melody Ranch Girl box; Bear Family)
Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys -- The One & Lonely You (The Spectacular
Sadness of Rex Hobart & the Misery Boys; Bloodshot)
Sir Douglas Quintet -- Time Changes Everything (The Prime of Sir Douglas
Quintet; Music Club)
Long Ryders -- Looking for Lewis and Clark (The Long Ryders Anthology;
Chronicles)

Brood -- Keep Me Satisfied (Beyond the Valley of the Brood; Dionysus)
Pilgrimage -- Bad Apple (Things Been Bad; Teenage Shutdown)
Boy Blues -- Coming Down to You (Yeah Yeah Yeah; Cheep! Cheep!)
Knaves -- Your Stuff (Leave Me Alone 10" EP; Sundazed)

Back From the World of LSD; Collectables)

Longhorn Devils -- Monkey Ride (Spitfire Bar-Bee; Wildebeest)

And that was that. Coming up real soon -- the annual "Day The Surf Stood
Still" all-surf show! See you soon!

I'm finding a few discs are getting repeated plays here at work. (Though I
did spend all of one day last week listening to Kopper's station at
Live365.com... GREAT STUFF!)

Tom Clark & the High Action Boys - Cross-Eyed & Bow-Legged (Blacksmith)
Tom's originally from Illinois, but he's been playing NYC for at least
13-14 years. I first ran into him when the whole Anti-Folk thing was at its
peak. While he hung out with that crowd, I never thought of him in those
terms. Sure, there was (and is) folk in his sound, but there's also some
classic country and big-grin-have-a-blast rock'n'roll involved. [I always
like hearing him cover "30 Days" in his live shows.]
Some of the guests that appear include Graham Maby, Robert Quine, and
Joe McGinty, but things are just as good when it's just Tom and the boys
letting loose.

Dave Rave Group - Valentino's Pirates (To M'Lou)
This was originally released on the Russian label, Melodiya, about 12
years ago. It wasn't released here (except on cassette, which I still
have), despite them being a local NYC group. 3 of the band members were
originally from Ontario. (Dave Rave most people knew from his time in
Teenage Head; Gary "Pig" Gold people either knew from his _Pig Papers_ 'zine
or from a Beach Boys cover group he played with up there; and Coyote Shivers
became better known afterwards.) The others involved were Lauren Agnelli of
the Washington Squares and Billy Ficca from Television. Some excellent pop
rock on this re-ish, plus there are some bonus tracks and liner notes by
Dawn Eden.

Cavestomp Battle of the Bands comp
I don't have it with me today (forgot it at home), but there's some
seriously cool material on here. This is well worth the 9 bucks. Geez, 20
bands/songs for 9 bucks. And lots of it's really worth listening to. Now,
can someone tell me how to find out where Teenage Cannibal Head and The
Dilettantes (both of whom supposedly live fairly close by) are playing.

In the mid 80's a real low-fi Boyce & Hart bootleg hit the collectors market.
On it there is a track obviously from some TV show where they are performing
the Issac hayes written song "I Thank You" There is some cat with a heavy
accent saying thank you very much for your generosity, in the dialog. Anybody
know what show or movie this was from? It is "NOT" from the Ambushers, Where

I think it had something to do with *when* you went
to school in addition to *where*. When I was in school
at Pitt ('79-'83), we didn't get hardcore porn flicks
but there'd be an artsy European flick with lotsa skin
every so often, for instance "The Sweet Movie".

If you're talking about the Pebbles CD series then
you have them all, there is no volume 11 (what's up
with that, anyway? Greg?)

The Pebbles LP series had 28 volumes.

This is interesting, because just last week some of us were
discussing on Bomp list that there seems to be a great deal of
exaggeration and hype regarding their onstage decadence, which now
apparently seems to really be the case after all. I read a reference
in a review in a local paper about a puddle of piss behind Victor's
amp (the New Haven gig). I didn't see him do that, just observed the
last tune's nudity. I read another reference to him peeing behind the
amp elsewhere. I'm thinking, why bother? If its part of the act, then
why not in front of everybody? Not that I would feel like getting
splashed on but it just seems a bit odd.

Anyone notice that Bill Kelly's been playing a lot of Stereo Total lately? Can someone explain this German duo's appeal? I've got an earlier CD and it
undeniably has a certain kitschy, throwaway charm, but BK's really giving them the hard push. Since he's (presumably) not on this list, I can't ask him
directly, but if anyone here sees something in this band that's escaping me, please enlighten.

Ummm...to quote Rick Springfield, where can *I* find a
woman like that? :)

Tim
P.S. I love it when porn producers take the titles of
popular movies and pervert them for their own use!

I saw one fan site that listed their influences as "Popcorn by Hot Butter,
Salt n' Peppa, chanson, yé yé girls, serge gainsbourg, rock and roll, Jaques
Dutronc Francoise Hardy disco New Wave Der Plan Cramps Gories Patti Smith
Young Marble Giants Kraftwerk pubrock Quarks horror films old school rap lofi
movement moogs drum machines garage rock The Shaggs "

I like that stuff and they incorporate a lot of it without being shitty. I
enjoy hearing a current take on a lot of that 60s Europop stuff, all mixed up
like, what's that rock crit word? deconstructed? Their CDs vary widely, while
some may have a "throwaway charm" other are well crafted, the moog sounds and
cheap keyboards and the drums that sound like the patterns built into those
huge 60s organs grab me.

I'm also completely in love with Francoise Cactus' breathy French singing.
Makes me all woozy and brings on bad thoughts. Her singing is so sexy,
detached, exotic and dirty. If I ever build a time machine and go on a bender
through Europe in the late 60s, through pop art airports and filthy hotel
rooms, she'd be the one to make me need penicillin shots.

I don't even know what she looks like, I got all the songs offa napster, but
I am in love. No other female singer has ever hit me in such a base, sexual
way ever. Ever. It caught me completely off guard.

I also like the contrast of the guy's singing as well, the variety helps, and
when they sing together, like on "Supergirl," it's like Nancy and Lee, but
some weird Euro version of Nancy and Lee.

They're great live. Sloppy but a lot of fun. It has a lot to do with their
stage appearance.
I've seen them twice I think. I rate them highly performance and imagewise
(great sense of humour, looks good etc)
but the music is really so so. There are bands that do that fucked up
electronic pop much better. Finnish band Aavikko
being one of them. But if Francoise Cactus is your thing, I understand
fully...

Hola Pekka,
Got some new finnish rockenroll wax from the late 70s I need info on but for
now... can you help me get ahold of recrd(s) by finnish band Aavikko? If you
regard them so high I trust ya.
Still have to defend Stereo Total, I absolutely love 'em...
