Gotta agree wth Pekka (coolness Pekk!). The guys of the Los Banditos gave me
this tape with some of their stuff on it three or four years ago and
immediately loved it!! They have been doing that 'sixties meets eighties
electronica poppunk' - thang for some time now. Here in Belgium the
europop-scene is flourishing with several groups popping up everywhere, but
mostly as a hype (just like the easy listening scene couple of years ago,
remember?). Few bands are really trying to do something with the sounds...
The problem now with Stereo Total is that they used to tour as the four
piece band, but now mostly gig with two (Françoise and Brezel) and it
sometimes gets rather clumsy on stage, which can be explained as charming,
and they can't really give the same impact as their albums...
But I still think they're one of the best bands who brought that 60's-80's
sound back among us...whatever happened to the B-52's BTW :)...

Subject: VALLEY GIRL: the Plimsouls (they don't write them like that anymore)

Greetings,

I just got up and channel surfing. On Comedy Central, they are
showing "Valley Girl." Watching the movie, I can easily recall
how cheesey the 1980s were actually. However, the scene when
the two punks took the preppy girls to the punk rock club was the
gratifying part. Ah, it is so nice to have the Plimsouls greeting my
TV first thing in the morning. "A Million Miles Away" is a superb
example what 80s rock should have been, instead of all that
Top 40 shit.

It is amazing how one forgets what forgotten power pop gems there
are out there. It sounds cliche as hell, but they surely do not write
songs like that anymore. Actually, you do still find decent music
today, but it seems as if it is harder to find today than it was back
then. Thanks to the Bomplist, I feel like there's hope for people.

You know, it is kind of funny. Fifteen years ago, I look forward to the
day when cheesy metal, rap, and dance music would be out of
"style" and replaced with power pop and all the underground cool
stuff of that time. To my dismay, metal transformed itself into
grunge and eventually into the Korn/Limp Bisqit shit. Rap transformed
itself into the gansta shit of its former self. And when you thought
that the sterile badly disposable crap of dance music would
disappear, to see it replaced with the air headed shit of Britney
Spears and N' Sync. YUCK!

What is needed is another punk explosion. No, I don't mean the
stuff around the time of Green Day and their ilk. Something needs
to wake up something real. Any thoughts on this?

Thanks for the rundown. As I mentioned, I already have "My Melody" and can hear
some of those influences, but must confess that I don't pick up any Cramps or
Gories at all. Maybe that's on another disc. But they're definitely on the same
vibe as Stereolab. Maybe Bill Kelly should start playing some of their stuff,
too. -- Rick

I don't think they do stuff as part of an act, they just get up on stage
and do what they feel like. They've stopped getting naked so much lately
because a friend told them it'd become a gimmick and they ought to knock it
on the head. They told me that they started taking their clothes off
because they had some shows in Portugal and it was very hot. And besides,
in Portugal, that sort of thing isn't quite so remarkable... Whatever they
do, it isn't thought it, it isn't always done for the benefit of the
audience, it's just three mad Portuguese boys and one Glasweigian just
being themselves. -- PJ

If it happens it will happen just as it always has - some kid, inspired by
something outside the standard fare of the day, picks up a guitar and plays
something wild at a time when the airwaves and culture are numbed with tame
redundancies (like Elvis bringing in the blues to white audiences who were
used to Perry Como and straight c&w, or Radio Birdman nodding toward the
Stooges and the MC5 when the culture was into the Eagles and $35 ounces of
Columbian pot). And then the beat will catch on and the studios will pick up
on it and repackage it as fashion, tone it down for general consumption; a
few bands will get slick and maybe rich and the rest will fade away until
some kid finds their recordings and starts the whole process over again.
Unless it turns out that kids don't identify with rock and roll anymore. I'd
hate to think that this music, like us, gets old, irrelevant, and dies.

I'm a big fan of Chris Connor, but must admit sometimes she seemsto be
trying to hard. Still, the Rhino 2 for one of Chris Craft and one of her
live lps is pretty great.
Speaking of sultry singers, does anyone know if Kitty White's recording of
'I'd Rather Have the Blues' (from 'Kiss Me Deadly') was ever released on
record (I think it's Kitty White)

I'd never call my girlfriend that, but just today I
was visiting her, and her mother was watching some
home crafts show on TV. She said, "they're about to
show how to make flower pots out of old records." My
girlfriend saw it and said, "Now I know what to do
with all those old records of yours if you ever kick
the bucket." Hmmmm... I imagined an alternate scene:
Coming home from work, it's "Hi, honey, I'm home,
whatcha baking?" Her: "Oh, I'm making your old records
into flower pots." "Oh, crap, you just made an ashtray
out of my rare Beatles 45!!"

God help me if she wasn't joking...

I do have another record-scratching bitch story,
involving my ex-girlfriend who was a just-plain-bitch.
We were over at a friends house and I had some CDs
with me, including the Undertakers "Unearthed" CD that
I had paid 23 bucks for through mail-order. She picked
up the CD and said "What's this shit?" and before I
could answer, she said "Ahhh, who cares?" and flung
the damn thing across the room, sending the disc
skidding across the floor with the broken jewel case.
Luckily the CD still plays fine, but why I didn't
break it off with her at that moment, I will never
know.

Dave

As far as I know, the Gants are planning to release
three CDs of rarities spanning 1963-1990 on their own
label. I've not seen anything new on their website.
What I want to know is if this changes Sundazed's
plans to release a second CD of the Gants, with
unreleased stuff, that was announced when the "Road
Runner!" comp came out? There are still quite a few
good album tracks that were left off the first CD.
Their version of "Rain" by the Beatles is awesome, and
Sid Herring does a perfect imitation of the backwards
fade at the end...
