Yeah man I fuckin' built my 7", LP, and CD shelves with my own bare fists!
For the LP shelf, I used these wide pine boards that were really nice and
had their own plastic wrapping! I got 'em from Lowe's. If you'd like, I
could take a couple digital pictures of the shelves and send 'em to you...

just an aside that if there are any bompers looking for cd storage ideas
in the Washington, DC area, the used book store "the book alcove" has
great ones custom made to your specs you can pick up for around $150
that hold around 800 cds. I got the his and hers set and they're a
lifesaver. of course mine is almost filled and she still has a few
empty shelves... don't discount the idea of having handy andy build you one

Hi all you handy people,

I made my own shelves and they were fairly inexpensive, but maybe a
little more
labor intensive than the "L" bracket model. You start with the 13 inch
wide plywood
shelves. Mine are only 3/4 inch thick which is plenty sturdy enough. I
used 1 inch
diameter wood rods as the supports. I used 2 inch long threaded steel
pins, inserted
in holes drilled through the wood rods, to support the shelves. You have
to use 2 small
"L" brackets to attach them to a wall, but that's just to make the
shelves steady; the rods
carry the weight, not the wall. Here is a diagram of what the 13 inch
wide shelves look
like before you put the rods through:

_______________________________________________________________

     O O O O
O O O

     O O O O
O O O
________________________________________________________________

... unless the diagram gets distorted when reformatted for the list.

The cool thing about them is that they can be taken apart and moved very
easily
because nothing is glued, nailed or screwed together... just two small
"L" brackets.

That's an old spiritual that goes back much farther than Ramsey Lewis. There
are umpteen thousand vocal versions (w/different lyrics, depending), but for
some reason I'm assuming you mean Marlena Shaw, a jazz-soul vocalist (ala
Nancy Wilson) who did her version in response to Ramsey's hit, in the
mid-sixties. Both were on the Cadet label.

Try "She's A-My Own," "Don't Blame Me," and "It's A Crying Shame." All three
tunes appear on the I SEE THE LIGHT. The rest of the album (mostly originals)
is somewhere in the middle, but not as bland as the other album you heard. I
SEE THE LIGHT (the album) pretty well thought-out for the time...not the
usual two-hits-plus-filler job (like the WESTERN UNION elpee was). Apart from
"What'd I Say" and "Twist & Shout," all songs are originals. A lotta
different kinds of styles, but to me, it still relates back to the garage
vibe.

Besides, they are one of the few garage-type bands I can think of, besides
the Remains, that sound like they were influenced by country music. Dunno how
you feel about that (I have no problem with it), but songs like "The Outcast"
(recommended for Johnny Cash's next album) remind me of the Remains'"But I
Ain't Got You."

I came up with a "concept" myself just this morning. Inspired by the Sands'
"Open Your Eyes," the greatest Seeds rip-off ever (on Sixties Archives Vol.
5), I came up with this band idea: The Byrdseeds, a combination Byrds/Seeds
cover band. The possibilities are endless: Byrds covers, Seeds covers,
Byrds covers in a Seedy style, Seeds covers a la Byrds...

Open your eyes and see (and see...)

Signed D.C.

P.S.: CD/record shelves: If you don't mind pressed wood, just pick up some
IKEA build-it-yourself items. The tall Billy model has matching inserts
that convert six book shelves into twelve CD shelves, with space for about
800 CDs. Billy can also handle albums fairly well, though they stick out an
inch or so...better still might be the Bonde model, which is about 13 inches
deep.

Finally, somebody comes through with some building plans. Thanks.

I'm still using the orange crates that record stores sold when they sold
records. They work fine, but I could store more of records if the shelves
were permanent.

For 45's, I've got some old wooden Coca-Cola crates.

I will probably varnish or paint the wood. Any warnings on finishes or
types of wood that I should avoid?

I had a friend that used cheap pineto make some bookshelves. There was still
some sap in the wood, it seeped out and destroyed some of the books.

Non-commercial stations probably hold on to everything. At WPKN, we
have nearly 40,000 LP's and several hundred cassette tapes! Probably
a few thousand 7". We're currently around the 38,000 mark for CD's.

Pine should work out fine. I use the stuff from the
hardware store that is unfinished and costs about $30
for a sheet. I just put a few coats of white paint on
em and they work fine (no sap), but if you're gonna
put varnish on it you might wanna use some of the more
expensive ($60 a sheet) plywood, or just use trim.

Well, they had a hit with a cover of "Signs" from an album called Five Man
Acoustical Jam, so I guess they're entitled.

"Signs" itself belongs in a category with "In The Year 2525:" Horrible
pretentious period pieces that sound meaningful to 12 year olds. I'm sure
you've all figured this out by now, but NEVER trust people who claim to
speak for God, not even if they sound sympathetic to "long haired freaky
people," not even if the b-side sounds kind of cool for 1970.

am close to catching up, but still have about 80 packages to mail. I hope to
be caught up by the end of this week.

The exciting thing is that everything is coming out within a few weeks -
there has never been such a flurry of activity with the label. The new
Continental Magazine came out in December, our Untamed Youth CD arrived on
Thursday and our new Footstompin' Trio CD will be here in Tuesday. If you
are a member of the Double Crown Music Club and have one CD left in your
subscription you will receive our Untamed Youth CD with a renewal notice. If
you have two or more releases left then you will receive the Untamed Youth
CD and The Footstompin' Trio CD together. To become a member of the Double
Crown Music Club (and receive the next four label releases) it's only $20 US
/ $23 if you live in Canada and $30 if you live anywhere else in the world.
You can join online at www.dblcrown.com/catalog.html

You can also order copies of our new releases without joining the music
club. Our Untamed Youth - Major

Our self-titled Footstompin' Trio CD contains 14 songs, a near equal mix of
vocals and instros that combine the genres of rockabilly, hillbilly and
bluegrass. Kind of a mix between The Sadies and Southern Culture On The
Skids. They play their CD release party on Friday, February 8th with The
Immortal Lee County Killers at the 3-B Tavern.

To order the CD online please go to: http://www.dblcrown.com/catalog.html

We also have a new joint-label CD compilation coming out soon, probably in
March or April. Along with
Golly Gee Records, we're putting out a CD called "War Of The Surf Guitars".
It will have 20+ tracks from bands like The Penetrators, The Apemen, The
Krontjong Devils, The Boss Martians, The Supertones, Ralph Rebel and more.

The new issue of The Continental, featuring interviews with Man Or
Astroman?, Trent Ruane of The Mummies, The Balboas and The Royal Fingers is
out now. The magazine also features a great
sci-fi themed CD sampler. To subscribe to The Continental, or to order this
issue, please go to: http://www.dblcrown.com/catalog.html

We here at WUSB are going through a long, drawn out record/cd library
overhaul. This past spring we moved the entire record library into a new space
and are currently incorporating several years worth of cds into the old cd library
(there were some space issues). A massive undertaking for sure. But, non
commercial radio stations (at least the better ones) throw out NOTHING! And I
have the back aches to prove it.

I know periodically record storage subject comes up on this list. I've been using
the ever popular milk crate stacking technique but, of course with milk crates you
waste a whole lotta space. I know I can fit another two rows of records if I built
shelves. And at this point, I need the space so, this was gonna be a project for
the spring/summer for me. I'm thinkin' more along the lines of a bookcase type
set up but, with tremendous amount of supports.

45's....I've been using file cabinets, they work out great. You can fit
three rows of records in each draw. Those cardboard tomato cartons work
well too.
