What the holy hell is THIS?!? And... I mean, I HAVE "The Cheerful Insanity
of..." Go ahead, ASK me how often I'm moved to play it, LOL... Is this
here brondesbury stuff necessary? Is it actually, well, fun or something???
Besides in an "OK, now I've HEARD that" sorta way? Please, enlighten! ; ) >>

    hey lenny -
this CD is made up of a bunch of home demos circa 67-68 for many songs
that wound up on the "cheerful insanity" record, and quite a few that didn't.
the same stuff came out on the 10th planet "metaphormosis" LP last year, but
the CD adds some extra tracks. it's fantastic stuff, and i f you dig
"cheerful insanity" you are sure to love this - on many of the tracks, GGF
are joined by ian mcdonald on flute/vocals/etc etc and judy dyble (then late
of fairport convention) on lead vocals. this is kind of a cross between
"magical mystery tour", the first fairport LP, and the kinks "something
else," with a splash of classcial guitar and a touch of pastoral psych. a
really beautiful record, sppooky and weird in places, but very fun, too -
VERY highly recommended. this is UK popsike of the highest order...and this
stuff isn't the usual "demo quality" material either, just about all of it
sounds like it was recorded in a regular studio.....so in addition to the
great music, it's a very interesting document of what was techincally
possible in the DIY world of the sixties. if you dig "cheerful insanity," you
NEED this!!
& by the way - how often ARE you moved the play the GGF album? i love
that album, i listen to it quite a bit myself - one of the most overlooked
english LPs of the late sixties, i think. great album.

Not sure if I should reveal this yet...but what the hell. I just had the
first meeting/rehearsal with a new band. We call ourselves The Custard Men
and only perform songs about things that are yellow. Whether this project
actually makes it to a public performance remains to be seen. But we're
having fun doing it anyway. (Suggestions of songs to cover are welcome by
the way.) PJ

Folks,

New this week -- well, not really REALLY new but new in the Radio Rumpus
Room garage anyway -- was the latest Surfin' Lungs album "Goin' To
Rockingham." This is a terrific release! This long-lived Brit band has
kicked out another smile-producing celebration of (mostly vocal) surf and
hot rod music in the vein of Bruce & Terry, the Barracudas and Sweden's
Daytonas. We dug it a lot. Something else highly recommended that we've
just gotten around to picking up is Ike Turner's return with The Kings of
Rhythm. "Here And Now" (on Ikon) definitely jumps!

As always we say thanks to the artists and labels responsible for producing
tonight's music, and to the loyal listeners who encourage us to air it
every week! (For seven years now, Radio Rumpus Room has been broadcast
Fridays at 9-10:30 p.m. on KFAI Fresh Air Radio, FM 90.3 Minneapolis and
106.7 St. Paul. The show also streams live on the Internet, and as always,
our most recent show is archived in its entirety in RealAudio. YOU CAN
LISTEN TO THIS ENTIRE 90 MINUTES OF AUDIO MAYHEM RIGHT NOW! Just link up
through the RRR web page ANY old time to listen to this noise and catch
Jean and Ron spouting the usual fabrications and preposterous "statements
of fact!")

Here's what we cranked in the Radio Rumpus Room garage on Friday, February
1, 2002:

SAVVY SHOW STARTER (always locally recorded!)

Conquerors -- I'll Be Doggone (In the Doggie Style EP; Tela-Ad)

A couple weeks ago Minneapolis' Conquerors appeared in a local cover band
contest as "Ten Beers After" -- in their words "not Ten Years After but an
incredible simulation" -- complete with "the leather fringe, the satin, the
velvet and even the clogs!" True story!

Spencer Davis Group -- I'm A Man (I'm A Man; Sundazed)
Rob Hoeke -- When People Talk (Essential Pebbles, Vol. 3; AIP)
Big Maybelle -- Winnie Widow Brown (Drivin' Blues; 32 Blues)
Ike Turner & The Kings of Rhythm -- Tore Up (Here And Now; Ikon)

Backgrounds -- The Day Breaks at Dawn (Fuzz, Flaykes and Shakes, Vol. 2;
Bacchus Archives)
C.A. Quintet -- Colorado Morning (Trip Thru Hell reissue; Sundazed)
Chesterfield Kings -- A Lovely Sort of Death (Where the Action Is; Sundazed)
Creation -- How Does It Feel to Feel (Nuggets II box; Rhino)

Surfin' Lungs -- We're Goin' to Rockinham (Goin' To Rockingham; No Tomorrow)
Untamed Youth -- Go Go Ferrari (Untamed Melodies; Norton)
Malibooz -- My Baby Came Back on the Last Wave Today (Malibooze Rule!; Pier
Group)
Barracudas -- Tokyo Rose (Through the Mysts of Time; Snowdome)

Surfin' Lungs -- We're Goin' to Rockinham (Goin' To Rockingham; No Tomorrow)
Go Gos -- Beatnik Beach (Behind the Music: The Go Gos Collection; A&M)
Daytonas -- I Love California (Ready Set Go!; Sunlight)
Dave Edmunds -- London's a Lonely Town (Pebbles, Vol. 4; AIP)

Arkie Shibley -- I'm a Poor Oakie (Hot Rod Race; Collector)
Terry Fell -- Play the Music Louder (Truck Driving Man; Bear Family)
Johnny Paycheck -- The Late and Great Me (The Real Mister Heartache; CMF)
Rex Hobart & The Misery Boys -- Forever Always Ends (The Spectacular
Sadness of...; Bloodshot)

Aqua Velvets -- Bravado (Radio Waves; Milan)
Joe Maphis -- Guitar Rock & Roll (Flying Fingers; Bear Family)
Larry Collins and Joe Maphis -- Rockin' Gypsy (Skip and Jump; Bear Family)

Biller and Wakefield -- Chicken at an Exhibition (The Hot Guitars of...; HMG)

And that was that. Talk to you next week!

I always figured they were synonyms, but "acid rock" just didn't catch on.
Everytime I've heard the phrase in my lifetime during the last 20 years, it
was always coming from an older figure who didn't follow rock music and was
unaware the terms changed. Example: when I was in high school (ca. 1982), a
teacher of mine was surprised I liked "that loud, acid rock" instead of the
post-disco black music my classmates preferred. Around that same time, New
York Rocker ran a story on Johnny Otis, reporting that he "still" referred to
white rock as "acid rock."

Whether it was my physics teacher or an acknowledged R&B pioneer, acid rock
was a dated term to use 20 years ago and it's probably even more so today.

I've been looking for a good, nice shelving unit to put my records for a while now because I'm getting really tired of the stacking wooden record crate method. Searching on the web turned up a few interesting ones, but nothing I wanted to plunk down money for. There's actually a bookcase in the latest Ikea catalog that I've got my eye on and think would work perfect as a really nice record shelf. If any of you have the current (2002) catalog, it's the EXPEDIT bookcase, item #1 on page 78. $199 but it's pretty large (72"x72"). They don't have this one on their site, but if you go to www.ikea.com you can request a catalog for free.

The best CD shelf I've found (and that I'm getting ready to buy) is here:
http://www.webmall2000.net/storage/cd_wall.asp

Holds 1500!! Kinda pricey at $230, but it's a nice shelf.

I believe the Hardly Worthit Players were a comedy ensemble of the period
(mid-sixties) who recorded two albums for Parkway. The first album contained
"Wild Thing," which was credited on the 45 to "Senator Bobby." Apparently,
they toured as part of rock shows with this political schtick - Al Kooper, in
his book, remembers a Murray the K live show in NY that his band the Blues
Project played with, among others, Cream, Wilson Pickett, the Who, and the
Hardly Worthit Players.

"Wild Thing" was a charting hit single...you can read a more detailed account
in Wayne Jancik's book, THE BILLBOARD BOOK OF ONE-HIT WONDERS.

That's an old spiritual that goes back much farther than Ramsey
Lewis.
I think i knew that -apparently Ramsey's version had Ray Charles

something

For 45s, I've bought a bunch of tool boxes from a DIY store. They're
perfectly sized for around three hundred singles. They're made of hard,
durable plastic. The tray that slots in top is just thrown in the trash. I
put a sticker on the top and on the side indicating the contents (ie. 70s
punk, 60s garage, 60s beat groups, 50s rockabilly, 80s/90s/00s garage etc
etc) and then stack them. I waited till the store was having a sale and
bought a van load at £5 each but I shouldn't think they're too expensive
normally.

As for the albums, I happened to move into a house that fortunately already
had sturdy shelving in the bedroom at exactly the right size. Although I'm
now running out of space...

How many LP's will it hold? The price looks good. I'll have to measure the
space to see if I can squeeze a couple of 'em in.

I am using a cedar-lined walk-in closet for record storage, the shelves will
have to be assembled inside the closet. Also, I am going to have to find a
place to store the clothes that are currently wasting half of the space in
the closet.

I've generally though of Acid Rock as describing bands
like Blue Cheer, Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple, or
Vanilla Fudge. Extended jams, drum solos, bad facial
hair, eight-minute tripped-out covers of old
rock'n'roll songs that originally clocked in under
three minutes, so forth.

funny to see damage mentioned, their first lp is one of the rarest and most
unknown nyc punk/hc records made (only 500 copies) and a winner at that, with
2 or 3 bass players. actually, i was gonna unload my extra copy on ebays
soon. their second one on cbgbs records was good, but not as good. and yeah,
they did features members of the swans and prong. don't know about the
hydromatics.

Hey, is there anyone onlist with an easily accessible collection of Creem's
from the late 70's? Trying to track down the issue #/date of the Iggy
interview (was re The Idiot, working with Bowie, etc) where he's asked what
he's listening to these days, and he mentions KC and "That's the Way (uh
huh, uh huh) I Like It."

Thanks in advance,

Lenny

Um, I don't remember any of those groups having

She announced to the press she was having them augmented about 4

full of similar useless trivia. Entertainment Weekly, Entertainment Tonight,
whatever. Dr. Mindburger (not a fan b4 or after-of the music either).

Wow, Tiffany nude. . . I knew she was cute, actually I think she looks better now than when she was a teenager. At least i thought so when I saw her on 'Where Are They Now?" a few years back. Who knows how much of the Playboy photo is really her, but shit! Can they make me look good naked too?

On Thanksgiving a friend of mine was threatening to slip off into the bathroom with the then-recent issue of Rolling Stone with Britney Spears on the cover. . . he didn't though. I guess he was too drunk for even his hand!

Hmmm... Quite a hornets nest you've ripped into here. I doubt if there
are true factual and indisputable definitions for both terms, let alone the
difference between the 2. I'll just offer my opinion on a couple things.
First of all, for me, "psychedelic rock" does not allow for the earliest
form of psychedelic music-garage band music, which was already in
place when psychedelic influences started to creep into the records.
I say this because I believe any kind of "rock" music has left out the
"roll" quotient in name and quality (teenage excitement, the beat, etc)
This is why you will never hear me use the term "garage rock". Because
"rock" w/o the roll is a whole different ball game to me. Other than that,
I'll just say that I remember the term psychedelic being applied to music
on the radio a few years before hearing the term "acid rock". If you
want to surmise that means "acid rock" came a bit later and was
maybe heavier and more deserving of the "rock" w/o the roll label, so be it.
Garage band music was rock and roll-not rock. The term "psychedelic"
probably covers a larger time period and much more music than the more
specific "acid rock". Moptop Mike, late of this list, also despised the term
"garage rock" for the same reason I do. It just don't sound right! I don't
expect everyone to agree with me on this. It's just the way I saw things
develope in the 60's and 70's. Your turn..... Dr. Mindburger.
ps-Mike also hated the term "acid punk". I kinda' like that one myself.
Just sounds like a really exciting action-packed psychedelic garage
record to me. I don't know if Greg Shaw coined that one or not, but I
thought I'd seen it in Pebbles liners before. It's better taken as a
descriptive term for the wild records, rather than a statement that the
Musicians were on acid. With extremely rare exceptions-they weren't.
pps-examples:
psychedelic: J. A.-"Somebody To Love" (could also be considered garagey)

acid and/or psych. rock: Morly Grey-The Only Truth lp

   " " " " " : Bloodrock- "D.O.A."
acid punk: The Fe Fi Four Plus 2-"I Wanna' Come Back From The World
Of LSD". (read: wild, psychedelic garage band rock and roll).
Same type of stuff also called "punkadelic".
I'll go out on a limb and say "acid rock" will always be psychedelic but
psychedelic will more often NOT be acid rock. Much wider range for
"psychedelic". Play
Ball!

I once was looking at some of the very first issues of 'Rolling Stone'
magazine, from 1967, and there was a news item in one of those issues that
said that Eric Burdon and the Animals had a new record coming out called
"Gratefully Dead." I've never ever come across this song on any Eric
Burdon/Animals release. Did this song ever actually come out, and if so,
where can it be found?
