I don't recall seeing her in any TV shots next to her daughter (St. Louis

I'd have to agree w/ the Fender Twin Reverb and/or the Vox AC30.

an early-to-mid 70s Fender Twin Reverb is much more affordable and IMHO much
more versatile.

Funny how you find stuff on this here internet thingy just by bouncing around
a bit. I just stumbled across a rather cute site called "Am I Annoying Or
Not?" which rates celebrities vis-a-vis the title question. You can vote,
also.

And no, Syd Barrett is NOT listed.

Here's an example:

The time for a bubblegum NUGGETS is long overdue, and I have heard some
outrageous Kasenetz-Katz productions that would shock any garage or psych
fan. But I kinda half agree with Kari, bubblerock really was a singles music.
For me, even some of the flipsides and misses (as opposed to hits) were
great, but you get an entire album's worth of the Archies or the 1910

I don't even know if this is still available, but the one Bond LP I have is
MIGHTY GRAHAME BOND on Pulsar, an obscure Mercury subsidiary. Not as "heavy"
as most hippie R&B of the era...this is basically small-combo soul, coming
dead close to what several US black bands were doing then. Not quite "funk,"
but leading up to it. Lots of songs with soulish "boogaloo" beats, played by
organ, sax, bass, drums, plus a decent guitarist who plays with his bare
fingers rather than through an effects box. Titles include "Magic Mojo,"
"Water, Water" (GREAT opening track!), "Pictures In The Fire," "Oh Shining
One," "Sisters & Brothers," "Brothers & Sisters," (I am NOT making this up).
Plus, the second side starts off with "Stiffnecked Chicken" and "Freaky Beak!"

I'm guesstimating this came out in '69 (in "Freaky Beak" Bond does note that
the date of recording happened to be the "Year Of The Cock" in China, so if
you're up on that kind of stuff, you'd know the year, I guess). The only
off-the-wall touch of "hippytude" happens when Bond starts chanting a mantra
against the beat of "Freaky Beak" and it actually WORKS!

You'll probably see the back cover, featuring artsy-fartsy liner notes and a
photo of Bond (who died in 1974) in his long-flowing robe and think this is
mere psych fluff, but these songs have a bit more balls and brains than all
that.

While Bowie has recently expressed appreciation for the version of "Space Oddity" records by the Kids from Kanada, it's extremely unlikely Karen Carpenter ever heard "Calling Occupants." This stuff didn't filter out of the record geek substrata until Irwin Chusid started playing it on
WFMU, I believe just a few years ago. So unless Karen was making thrift expeditions to rural Vancouver in the mid-70s, she's probably just now digging it in limbo. (Mind you, there's some fine thrifting in her home town of Downey... I got a Russian Suprematist plate there once!)

BTW, the new Scram--out tomorrow--includes Mike Appelstein's wonderful interview with Hans Fenger, the teacher behind these recordings, and with the little girl who solo'd on "Desperado."

Anyone in the Bay Area is cordially invited to drop by the APE (Alternative Press Expo) at Fort Mason on Saturday or Sunday (11-5) to visit with comix and zine folks, including myself and Edwin from Garage & Beat. We'll both have new issues fresh from the printer and will be easy to
find, opposite the Fantagraphics booth. I think it's $6 to get in.

The URL for the Irwin Chusid website is, simply

the link appeared in an earlier Bomp message.

It's an interesting site with various articles and
links and a section devoted to the LSMP.

Greg Ginn is a Deadhead or at least he was in the 80s. I remember reading
some
piece in maybe Maximum Rock'n'Roll about what a fan he was and that at
nearly
every place Black Flag played (outside of LA, presumably), he'd see at least
one
or two Dead t-shirts in the crowd.

Yeah, I know. That quote from Dez was actually about Greg's love of the

Subject: Re: amps

fender yes! fender twin, no!!!

fender amps are great, but twins are too loud and way too clean. i've owned
a couple (silverface and blackface reissue) and played extensively thru
several others. you just have to turn them up too loud to get them to sound
right, and they never yield any crunch. i even pulled a couple tubes out to
get some warmth at a lower volume (on a guitar tech's recommendation) and
used mine that way for a couple years -- still too loud, clean and way too
bright. especially if you're playing a fender, rickenbacker (or just about
any other guitar w/ single coil pickups) thru one -- not near enough
midrange and the high end will kill you.

to my ear a better alternative would be a fender bassman. much better tone.
i also love showmans, which have a clean sound but much better tone.

i'll put in a vote for voxes as well (i currently use an AC50 head/cab), but
for half as much money a blackface bassman sounds every bit as good (if a
little quieter).

also, regarding pedals, yeah there are some cool pedals out there, and i
love fooling w/ them, but i'd consider that a quick fix. ultimately there's
nothing better than the sound of a good guitar (no pointy guitars) going
straight into a tube amp cranked up just enough for some natural
warmth/breakup.

my 2 cents,
joe

Hey Kids-
I picked up the new Buddy Guy album recently, and I think it's really
fantastic- it's raw scary Mississippi hill country stuff a la Junior
Kimbrough but with Buddy going apeshit on guitar. Very strange and
beautiful, and a far cry from the beer commercial vibe of a lot of his
recent work. Now I see that he is playing soon at Irving Plaza here in New
Yorkyville. My question is this: Has anyone heard anything about the current
tour? Is he playing the material from the new album with the guys who played
on it? Or is he doing "Mustang Sally" backed by an antiseptic Paul
Shaffer-type unit?
I know that blues music doesn't get discussed here too often but I figure
maybe there's someone lurking out there who knows.
Thanks
- -Matt

I would also recommend the 'Live at Klooks Kleek' album, recorded in
October 1964, and available on Charly. It was repackaged a couple of years
back with, I believe, improved sound quality. IMHO this album has a good
ambiance and is the perfect aural document of what a London Mod club must
have been like in the 60s. The sexist in me also quiet likes the line
that GB adds in 'What'd I Say' - "see that girl with the topless dress on,
stays cool for me all night long!". Which begs the question: When does a
topless dress become a skirt? Definitely a recommended disc from these
junked-out jazzers gone beat ...daddy-o.

Yup, that's the one. Actually it's "Sweet Tea", I think after the name of
the studio where it was recorded. But "Sweat Tea" has a nice ring to it...

I don't think that happened. Even at the time of their Computer World tour, the
"robots" were merely unmoving mannequins. They did have robots for their most
recent American tour, and the band left the stage during "We Are The Robots",
but the robots merely "danced" (no legs, so it was more like twitching): there
was no pretense that the robots were playing the music.

okay, that's pretty annoying but just check out the list of most and least
annoying and try to make rhyme or reason of that. for example, barney was
on the least annoying list....huh???

I've seen those CD-Rs for sale, too. I have a sneaking suspicion that
"dustgod" is making these CD-Rs himself and the Japanese collector thing is
a cover-up for legal reasons. I haven't bought any of them because I have
about half of each CD-R already and over half of each one is filler that I
would never put on a mixtape for someone else. But don't let these CD-Rs
scare you away from obscure bubblegum. There are plenty of non-hit bubblegum
one-offs that blow away the hits.

Luis

have you tried using dirtier sounding preamp tubes? those cheap chinese tubes
that people usually put in Marshalls are awesome for getting some gain out of
a clean amp. but, i have to agree that if being really loud ISN"T your goal
there are plenty of other Fender amps out there other than a twin.
