also biasing is only necessary if you're putting in power tubes that are
different than the ones you had before! or if it's been quite a few years
since the last time you changed them. if you're only changing the preamp
tubes don't worry about that either.

i just had the thought that maybe some really clean preamp tubes could help
get some lo-fi breakup out of a Marshall. if your buddies amp uses 12ax7s in
the preamp section (most likely) try using 5751s instead. they are perfectly
compatible and get about 30% less gain. i know this sounds like i'm telling
you how to clean up the tone, but what actually happens is that you have to
drive the tubes a little harder to get distortion out of them. this way the
gain is more natural and not totally overdriven and metally. so it sounds
more like turning a clean amp all the way up. the overall volume will be a
little less too so you might be able to get a little power tube clipping as
well (which is where the real vintage overdrive tone lies).

another thing worth adressing is the cab. a closed back 4x12 is too much
(don't know if that's what you're using). if you're going for a more lo-fi
sound try a 2x12,4x10, or even an old fender 1x15. the trouble you might run
into there is finding one that can handle that big Marshall head.
hmmm...maybe taking the back off would work?

Get Hip has issued the Swamp Rats double side killer "Psycho" b/w Louie
Louie, but no news from a forthcoming Swamp Rats complete recordings LP ( or
DoLP?). It's been however announced something like 4 years ago.... any news
about it ?
And what about the Psychedelic Unknowns reissues ? everybody knows that Get
Hip is behind this serie and it's been ages that the first volumes are
awaited ( whereas vol. 4-12 are nearly all there).
any scoops bout these releases would be much appreciated.
Talking about never ending series, any news also from the Teenage Shutdown
saga ? when Tim Warren announced the outcome of the serie on Bomp ( do you
remember this famous "discussion" with Greg Shaw about "how" to make a comp
?), he said that 4 volumes were exepected each month, during a year and half
(60 lps!)... don't remember exactly where the whole stuff is blocked, but
we're far from that...

i will get rolling on some soon (found 2 never-heard of teen pounders back

Maybe that was just the tape...from what I remember, Rhino had something like
14 cuts per LP on the whole series. As far as the series itself...as I've
said before on-list, as soon as they started introducing non-garage acts like
the Chambers Brothers and Blue Cheer, the concept went straight to hell.

Sometimes you have to reprint a previous post just so people will know what

Yeah, but there weren't a hell of a lot of rarities, just the basic hits
beefed up with the occasional left-field selection (the way Rhino usually
does it).

(James Porter) This album isn't exactly new, having actually been out since
May 2001, and it is a refreshing change of pace, considering what he's coming
off of. The last time I saw him was two years ago, and if I'm lyin', I'm
dyin', he was wanking to DEATH - repeating the word "shit" numerous times,
stopping and starting songs out of paranoia that the crowd wasn't digging it,
and good-naturedly (though drunkenly) chiding the crowd for their "backup
vocals" on "Feels Like Rain": "Some a-y'all wuz OFF-KEY! Some a-y'all gotta
look back in the mirror and say, 'MAN, I FUCKED UP!' I useta sound like
that...when I was a kid in Louisiana I'd be out there sangin' & playin' my
git-tar, and my sister would hear me and say, 'YOUR ASS AIN'T GOIN'
NOWHERE!'" Ohhh-kaaay....very little musical value that night, but the
between-song asides kept me laffin'. Haven't seen him since SWEET TEA came
out, but I'm guessing that while he may be performing songs from it, his
rock-blues "Mustang Sally" days probably aren't quite over...

i really think he went out of his way to be as bad as he was-it had to take a concerted effort...and his tone was like that of a shitty saxophone. a really weird show it was but if he just played the hits with reasonable tone he'd be fine. todd

I'm gonna go out on a limb and weigh in with my hearty recommendation for the Ampeg Reverberocket. Both my Danelectro Mod and Epiphone Les Paul Jr. sound damned good thru my Reverberocket. Great tone, from raw garagey treble to smooth dripping surf-style reverb. No pedals needed. Bought it used for $300. Now if I could only learn to actually *play* I might get somewhere... ;)

Greetings,

Some Bompers are divided over Pink Floyd. I happen to listen
to their earlier work. Yes, I like "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn"
from 1967 and "Saucer Full of Secrets" from 1968. Some of their
really early singles like "Arnold Layne" and "See Emily Play" are
adequate cool enough for just about any fan of psychedelic garage
rock.

Anyway, I heard some MP3s of really early Pink Floyd songs never
released from 1965 or 1966. It's more raw for them than they did
when they started putting records out from 1967 on to now. I was
wondering if there's a compilation CD out there that just focus on
the Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd (1965-1968)?

If you listen to "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn", you might be
surprised with songs like "Lucifer Sam." Then again, I like the
early Traffic, the Move, and some of the other psychedelic monstrosity
that sucked as theatrical 70s progressive and dinosaur rock.

Later,

there are loads of bootlegs like this, but no properly issued discs. seek out
the excellent *intersteller overdrive* digipack, which features most of the
original singles, the pre-*pipers* demos ("lucy leave" and "king bee"), the
unreleased MONSTERS "vegetable man" and "scream thy last scream," and a bunch

I would love to find out if she's still around, too (maybe she lives in my neighborhood!). So if any of you know or hear anything, by all means let me know. I imagine Lucia's pretty old by now. I mean, Georgia looks like she's at least 50 (maybe 60?) years old, which would put Lucia in the 70-80 range (if not older).

And as long as the Rams have been in St. Louis, I have never read or heard anything in the local media tying Georgia to her mother. Seems like that would be a fairly interesting special/human interest news story, but maybe her mother's "art" was so obscure that the local media hasn't even caught on. Not really even sure how popular her mother was back in the '60s or early '70s, for that matter...

I might try to do a little legwork on this and see if there's a way I can send a letter to Georgia Frontiere, inquiring about her mother. Would be kinda cool to include a small story like that in an upcoming issue of Head in a Milk Bottle, at least.

I've always been able to get a REALLY dirty sound out of twin reverbs (and
other tube amps that have both a channel volume AND a master volume) without
getting too loud by turning the master volume down low and the channel
volume wayyyy up. Also - to get a good garagey sound, I also make sure I'm
using PLENTY of reverb.

If they weren't so darn HEAVY, I'd always play through a SUPER REVERB!! I
LOVE those amps. However, you have to be a weight liftin'- truck drivin'
kinda guy to be able to cart one of those around, and - even though I'm not
exactly a wilting flower of a gal, I can't lift one of those suckers easily
- - AND I prefer to heft my own equipment so as to not piss the guys in my
band(s) off.

I've had some really good use out of Ampeg Gemini and G-12's over the years.
They tend to be less expensive (I've purchased both that I've owned for
under $300 each when comparable fenders were going for twice as much)
However, my current one died on the last song I played up at the Abbey a
couple weeks back and I am afraid it might not be worth the $$ to fix it.
(If I weren't broke, I'd go buy a new fender right NOW!!) <Sigh>

Anyway, although I *prefer* the sound I get out of a Fender I also have used
Marshall amps in various rehearsal studios around the city and have gotten
decent sounds out of them. To do that, I lowered the master volume,
increased the channel volume, increased the mid-range and bass, turned the
reverb all the way up and made sure that the volume on my guitar was pegged.

As well, at the studio where we're recording, they have either a really
clean vintage marshall or a reissue marshall (I can't tell - it's SOOOO
cool) that is the roughly same size as Vox. It has a black grill and cream
tweed case and sounds better than any amp I've played through yet. Very
versatile! You canmake it sound REALLY dirty or crisp or bell like depending
on how you play with it. Drool.

As for guitars - I prefer to play gretch or gibson - not fender. Fender
pickups tend to sound too clean or whiny for my taste. And if you play them
through a marshall, I imagine you will need to crank your mid-range to get
any decent kind of tone. I like the fat sound of a double humbucker pickup.
IMHO - A SG is ideal to get that dirty garagey sound.

OK - back to work for me...

Hey, that goes for synth & drum machines, too. There seems to be a slew of great new bands incorporating old new wavey sounds and combining 'em with old-style garage or punk, like The Clears, Epoxies, and The Lost Sounds (who are fucking incredible, btw). And while I never thought I'd admit this, these kids from Belgium seem to even know how to make techno ROCK! Nazis From Mars (I think Vanya's still on the list, actually), and they play "techno punk," and it's really great stuff (check 'em out if you haven't yet... you'd be surprised). You can check out some of their MP3s here:

The Bond and Brown lp is ok, but head for the two recent Pete Brown
reissues of the Battered Ornaments and Piblokto first. It's all four
lps, singles and very good demos and unreleased songs.

yeah just read the pete brown piece in feb's record collector

after having come across nonsense with him in the past i'd
really like to be able to talk about a band i've liked for the last 2

Hey jason,
there's lots of ways to modify the sounds an amp gets. Marshalls have the
sounds that Hendrix, Black Sabbath, and B.O.C. made famous and they seem to
only sound good with the volume on 11 and the sound is somewhat limited.
Many amp shops can modify the Marshall circuitry by adding an additional
preamp stage and/or an additional master volume. These mods are somewhat
expensive and of course would void the warranty and probably not give the
sound you are looking for anyway. The Vox AC30's sound great, but are
overpriced, and in my opinion are a bit over-hyped. A Fender Super Reverb is
my amp of choice and there was one on stage at the Las Vegas Grind 2000 that
most the guitarists used during their sets. Super Reverbs are loud, a bit on
the clean side, but it seems to distort more when I play harder, and I like
that control without punching a button. I do use a Pro Co "RAT" pedal (as
does Tim S. of the Cripplers) to add some additional dirt, feedback and
distortion when needed. I would suggest your guitarist get a "RAT" to begin
with and see if it can help the sound his Marshall. You can actually "thin"
the beefy sound out a bit with the RAT or go crazy with an over-fuzzed type
distortion. Older Fender tube amps(like the Super Reverb) are in high demand
and may be tuff to find or pay the asking price. I got mine for only $550
(with four new speakers) from Scotty's Music here in St Louis (314)427-7794.
Scotty's is the steel guitar world headquarters, and they come across a lot
of vintage equipment at a reasonable price, but you have to keep checking
with them as what they have. By the way, Scotty single handedly introduced
steel guitar to country music and toured with Ernest Tubb for 40 plus years.
There are also amps and effects pedals that can simulate(called amp
modeling) any type of amp with varying levels of authenticity. Some are
remarkable, and are actually scary in the sounds they can get. But for me,
it will always be Gibson(or Epiphone or Silvertone) semi hollow guitar(no
"F' holes + a simple fuzz pedal + an old (pre 80's)Fender tube amp for live
action. The digital stuff needs to stay in the studio.
Don't get me started on vintage tech concerning music stuff or muscle cars.
Bob
