I started reading a Scottish 'zine called Bam Balam (edited by Brian Hogg)
in the early 80s and ordered the "Nuggets" back issue. I was not
disappointed as there were lots of great pictures and discographies of the
likes of the Nazz, Cryin' Shames, Knickerbockers et al. Shortly afterwards
I took a leap of faith and bought the Psychedelic Unknowns compilation (a
UK pressing of Moxie ep tracks) advertised in an NME small ad. This
remains one of my favourite discs to this day. In 1983 I moved to London
and was lucky enough to catch the Fleshtones "Hexbreaker" tour. I suddenly
saw onstage *everything* I had dreamed r'n'r could be from the fanzines and
records I had bought over the preceding years. After that, there was no
looking back.

I'd recommend any bomper to find a local indian foodstore which rents
videos. Find a video made up of musical numbers by any of their divas (like
Lata mangeshkar or Asha Bhosle) and just go mad!!! I pick these because you
can get all of the musical mayhem from a dozen features crammed onto just
one of these tapes.
Speaking of Bollywood recommendations, I'll again ask if any UK bompers have
ANY of the channel 4 series 'Movie Mahal'. It appears to be a string of
documentaries about the indian film industry, and I've been dying to see it
since first learning about it.
Also I recommend (once again) another piece of super asian go-go madness,
the dvd of the japanese spy flick 'Black Tights Killers'. If you liked the
number from Ghost World, I'm sure you'll like BTK!

The original 'Another Saturday Night' LP came out on Oval in 1974.
Wasn't Charlie Gillett (author of the essential 'The Sound Of The

put out on 45 on the same label and was a UK hit if I remember
correctly. Ace put out an extended CD version of ASN a couple o'

have successfully mined the Jin and Swallow catalogues over the

The first seeds were planted in the mid 70s when I
1) found a Kinks & Standells record at a flea market for a buck each; and
2) I started asking this hippy kind of guy at a record store about The
Yardbirds.
1978 was the year my interest exploded, though, because I started working in
a record store. During slow periods I noticed a number of records with cover
art or photos reminiscent of some I already liked, where the band was
photographed through a fisheye lens or they were wearing these groovy
threads (notably 'The Easybeats-The Shame Just Drained' and 'Shadows of
Knight - Gloria') Adding to all of this was the first record convention in
NC, where I found copies of '? and the Mysterians' and 'Turn on The Music
Machine'. Bomp! magazine also blew my head wide open, when unbeknownst to me
a friend put me on a mail list to get a free issue!!

I am glad that you can't miss out on a chance to be a smart-ass, or to point out errors. I defer to your obviously superior powers of perception...

Alan Wright.. to get that James Brown sound, without losing the tone he
has, he may want to get another amp with a clean tone and run them in stereo
(always a pain in the ass but will solve the problem) >>>

Hmmmm, last time checked, drums didn't need amps, but thanks anyway! :)

No shit - Sopwith Camel, the Jaggerz, and the Lovin' Spoonful are not
bubblegum to me, yet because they recorded for Buddah, their stuff always
pops up on bubble-rock anthologies.

Subject: New 13th Floor Elevators Comp

I just picked up what is presented as the "only official authorized
greatest hits CD for North America", ABSOLUTELY THE BEST OF THE 13TH
FLOOR ELEVATORS. Just released on Fuel2000. Nice package. Trippidelic
cover of Roky's face with third eye; nice liner notes with concert
posters; 77 min; here's the track listing:

 1. You're Gonna Miss Me
 2. Slip Inside This House
 3. Pictures (Leave Your Body Behind)
 4. Till Then
 5. Rose And The Thorn
 6. Nobody To Love
 7. Street Song
 8. Roller Coaster
 9. Splash 1 (Now I'm Home)
10. Thru The Rhythm
11. Tried To Hide
12. Don't Fall Down
13. Fire Engine
14. Earthquake
15. Dust
16. She Lives (In A Time Of Her Own)
17. Before You Accuse Me
18. Levitation
19. Slide Machine
20. May The Circle Remain Unbroken

Also grabbed David Peel's 'War & Anarchy' (1994) which is cool except
for his use of drum machine. Fair to good quality recording, which
makes the drum machine sound worse. Just a bass drum and snare
would've been better, but there is a slew of noisey lead guitarists
(including Wayne Kramer on three cuts).

Hey, thank you all for the scoop on the Credibility
Gap, Sugar Shoppe, & Blue Boys - I'm kinda glad I
passed on those singles now! The Credibility Gap
sounds interesting, but I was hoping more for a
raunchy rock'n'roll kinda thing!

Thanks again,

Tim
P.S. If they'da had the record by the Action, I
woulda picked that one up AUTOMATICALLY, just for the
band's name!

I wish Something Weird would put out a whole dvd of scopitones!! That Joi
Lansing vid is GREAT! (though I also like the short clip called "The
Stripper and the Spider Girl") I don't know if Joi ever made any other
Scopitones, but I know she appeared in episodes of Beverly Hillbillies as
the wife of either Lester Flatt or Earl Skruggs. She also starred in the
awsomly bad 'Hillbillies in the Haunted House' (no relation to Beverly
Hillbillies) Sadly she died in the early 70s of breast cancer. Lots of other
cool extras (especially nifty little intermission shorts) on SW's dbl
featutre discs as well.

Sadly there's only three deleted scenes, but none of them have anything to
do with the love triangle--two involve the mullet/martial arts/beef jerky
guy in the Sidewinder parking lot.

I was quite surprised to see Thora Birch in some talking heads for an
"Inside the Playboy Mansion" doc tonight on A&E--somehow I can't picture her
soaking in the grotto...

She made at least two other Scopitones, entitled "The One I Love Belongs to
Somebody Else" and "The Silencer." I know I've seen one of 'em, but damned
if I can remember which--it's just as over-the-top man-hungry as "Web of
Love," but she's in more glamorous gowns, and she isn't shown being cooked
in a pot...
