Thanx. It still amazes me that it's such an unknown genre, even
(especially?) to most rock critics.

I dunno, I think mid-20s was extremely rare, except for some of the big-name
groups, like the Stones (I guess Bill Wyman was already twice the age of the
average teenbopper he groped) who, while being responsible for the genre,
weren't really part of it.

That said, there were a few older guys into it ("garage" that is). I think
Sean Boniwell was 24 when he did 'Talk Talk'. Funny thing is, that would be
considered young for a modern day 'neo' garage band member.

As for 14 year-olds into bands back then, I agree, that was pretty standard.

I can't speak for the Boston show, but in Brooklyn Red Planet were
absolutely great. The first song of the set ("Get Back At You", also the
first on the new disc) is classic rockin' pop, kinda like a faster Cheap
Trick. I also enjoyed their set-closer, a poppier version of Van Halen's
"Panama".

As to Sylvain, I used to see him weekly about 10-12 years ago at the
Continental. For awhile there his band (then dubbed "Sylvain Sylvain & the
Ugly Americans") included Jerry Nolan on drums and ex-Vipers' bassist Graham
May. *That* I always enjoyed. This show I found to have some good songs,
but not nearly the fun factor of the Ugly Americans' shows. Also, missing
from the set was "Kids Are Back", a number I always enjoyed. The rest of
the set was pretty much as Laura described the Boston show. One nice touch
was having Daniel Ray come up and play sax on a couple songs. Oh, and
having Frank Infante ("of The Blondies", as Syl put it) take over Syl's
guitar for a few songs.

Subject: Hello folks

Hello Bompers,

Back after some time away from the list. Hi to anyone who remembers me!
Happy to see some interesting stuff going on here!

#1 - Vintage Amps
Mmm, well having played bass for over 20 years in various combos I'd still
say my favorite amps are: for smaller gigs the classic Fender Bassman tube
head and its' matching 2x15 cab, and for bigger gigs an Ampeg SVT rig. Can't
beat'em for that warm, deep, tube sound. Generally I don't really dig any
solid state gear, but I don't get too snobby about it, "you can't always get
what you want" indeed.

#2 - Intro to punk
Musta been around age 12, and it was the Stranglers with their first album
which had just come out (mid-77). Pretty soon I was digging the Ramones,
Rezillos etc and all those other '78-era bands, and spending all my
allowance on the latest boss waxings from that week's John Peel radio show.

#3 Intro to garage
Came a few years later in the early 80s - I woulda been about 17 by then,
and having gotten a solid grounding in 70s punk, was moving backwards into
the 60s with the Stooges, the Velvets and the first run of Pebbles albums. I
was hipped to them by older musician pals: "hey you should listen to this!!"
I was immediately hooked, and can clearly remember taking my beat up copy
of "Funhouse" to teenage parties and trying to get'em to play any of it,
ideally "L.A. BLues" <g> Whatta hipster!

Does anyone have any idea where I might find Farfisa parts? We have a Fast 3 and we need to find the screws that hold the top on. Without those screws (we only have one) the top doesn't like to stay on. It also means that we can't fasten the top to the legs to stabilize it when it's played- kinda makes for a floppy organ!

Subject: What was your first introduction to garage/punk music?

In two words - Venus records. When I was a freshman in high school ('81-'82 ish), a pal's boyfriend got us into the Rezillos/Revillos and brought us to Venus back when it was on 8th Street off of 6th ave. The guys there (Mostly Bruce Planty and Scott Curran) took me under their wing (with Bill Shore always making fun of my increasingly goofy punk rock haircuts).... the first two records they made me buy were the Cramps Garbageman (LOVED IT) and a Mo Tucker 45 (admitedly I didn't quite get it). At one point I was spending so much time there my mom forbade me to go, and would periodically call to see if I was there. The guys would look right at me and chuckle while saying "Nope, haven't seen her".

They dragged me to my first Cramps show, introduced me to Billy & Miriam, Jeff Shore, Tim Warren, The Raunch Hands (granted took me a while to stop confusing Tim Warren and Mike Chandler 'cause they had the same haircut & dark glasses), Rick Sullivan, Ognir & Rachel and countless others, all the while having me buy cooler and cooler records (Back from the Graves, Virgin Prunes, Sonics, etc etc etc) and go to cooler and cooler shows (I think I first saw the Raunch hands at the Strip). I got to meet the Chesterfield Kings in an instore at 15, and have always kicked myself for not cutting school the day the Psychedelic Furs shot part of their Run & Run video there.

Those guys and that store were an incredible influence on me (well, minus the countless hours of my underage drinking at the Dugout, Peculiar Pub, and the bar around the corner from the Dive). They introduced me to AWESOME music and through the scene I met even more AWESOME people (Jahna, Blair, and tons more... I'd say Justina, but I met her on the hardcore scene!). I still consider myself a part of the NY Garage scene, and I miss it, and all of my pals, all the time!

Michelle

HI all!
Just a little note to BRAG about Live and Live Again.
The Heaters from the Seattle area are having their CD release party
Friday, February 15 at Waldos in Kirkland. CD signing in store party at
Easy Street in Ballard, 1-3pm Saturday February 16, and performing
Saturday night in Everett at PC's Pub.

These guys toured with Heart and the Knack in the early '80's with their
killer power pop style. Created tunes as "I Don't Like Your Face," and
"Have an Idea". They chose to reunite a few years back.

The new double CD has over 2 1/2 hours of music, and a 12 page booklet.

IF you are anywhere in the Pacific Northwest, find a car and make it out.

"Rock Star God" is okay, but it's no "Ziggy Stardust" or "Zen Arcade" (two
LPs it was compared to in the pres release). The funkier tunes don't work
very well. I like "Psychopathia Sexualis" a lot, the LP from just before
that which many of my pals didn't like very much. I think my favorite LP by
them is "Hunger," though.

Since I'm not familiar with any of the supposedly glam

However, compared to actual '70s glam it doesn't quite
cut the mustard...

Hey Bompsters,

Edwin (of Garage & Beat! magazine fame) and I just got back from San
Francisco, where we debuted the new issues of GAB and Scram at the
Alternative Press Expo.

This Scram has cover art by Gene Sculatti--yep, the celebrated compiler
of the "Catalog of Cool" is also an artiste, whose been designing
fantasy cityscapes on lengthy rolls of butcher paper since he was a
kid. His Scram Expressway drawing encloses an ish containing Gene's
hitherto unpublished 1971 interview with Gary Usher, Usher associate
Dick Campbell's recollections, Daniel Clowes on "Ghost World," exclusive
interviews with the principles behind the Langley Schools Music Project,
Phantom Surfer Mike Lucas talking with Brute Force, rock and roll board
games, Tease-o-rama burlesque fest, failed TV shows, Scramarama wrap up
and photo gallery, plus the usual tons of reviews.

Scram 15 is $5 postpaid ($8 overseas) from the address below. Checks
payable to "Kim Cooper" and not to Scram.

I'll credit my older cousins who used to schlep their record to Flushing from
Elmhurst on the subway when they'd be called on to baby sit my sister and I.
It was their impromptu dance parties as my first exposure to surf and garage.
With that as a foundation I started listening to Oldies FM radio (before it
really stunk) Finally when punk came a long and paid homage to the original
garage punk music , well the die was cast and I was hooked like a lazy bass
in a pond....

Subject: fast food and thrift stores

After a great day of thrift shopping, my girlfriend and I stopped by the
local LJS only to find that they've combined it with my vision of fast food
heaven, the A&W Rootbeer Stand! Anyone been to one of these? Not only can I
now get chili cheese fries with my fish planks, but all drinks come in
frostie mugs and you can keep on fillin em up- we split about 5 or 6 root
beers. What a stomach ache! Plus, it looks like a bowling alley in there,
when they call out your order they rhyme it (like "124 out the door!", "128
sure looks great!", etc...), and probably best of all they have an unlimited
free play 100 disc all oldies Rockola juke box! "Good Foot" was playin when
we came in, followed by some Jerry Lee. We played Kinks "Dandy", Ventures
"Perfidia", ShangriLas "Out in the Streets", Miracles "Mickey's
Monkey"&"Going to A go go", Jackie Wilson "Lonely Teardrops", Vandellas
"Dancing in the Streets", BookerT "Hip Hug Her" and a bunch more. All free,
which explains the 6 root beers. Anyways this place rules. Basically it just
beat out the diner at the doomed local KMart with their 1.99 chili cheese
fries and soda for my fave junk food dive regular stop.
Now for that day's thrift scores- topping the list were the kind of garage
rock records I'm always wishing I'll find in the thrift bins:
R.Sayre (and) the Vacant Lot "Don't You Just Know It/This Little Feelin'"
(came in two pack- had to buy "Spinning Wheel" to get this, 90 cents for the
pair) The label's called LTD, black w/ silver print.The A side's a great
version of the classic frat standard ,worthy of the Wailers. B side's a
moody punker penned by group leader R.Sayre where for some reason they mixed
the organ and vocals way above everything else for a really strange sound (
on both sides the guitar and organ double up on the same part for the solo).
This song made my day. Anybody know anything about this group?
Lemonpipers "Quiet, Please!/Quiet, Please!" (45 cents) on the Cinci based
Dana label. This is a fuzzed up number that's basically a rewrite of Blue
Cheer's version of "Summertime Blues", with fun gimmicks like how they
whisper the title after singing it. I've always thought one of these pre
"Green Tambourine" records would show up cheap eventually.
Rich Reason "Highway Home/Lonesome Prison" on the Jewel label. This is
another kind of thing I'm always hunting- I thought it would be some obscure
country tracks but instead it was some Shaggs-esque self produced singer
song writer with electric piano/percussion played so metronomic that it
sounded like a Casio, and the guy just charges on throughg with these
seemingly very personal lyrics delivered with disturbingly little attention
to time, key or structure- it was great!
Other pluses included a perfect copy of the 4 Tops "On Top" lp which
turned out to be yellow tagged for half price making it a whopping 30 cents.
Good 45s like Johnny Cash Columbia red label "What is Truth/Sing a
Travelling Song" (the B side was great!),Marvin Rainwater "I'm Gonna Find Me
a Bluebird/So You Think You've Got Troubles"- "Bluebird" features ear
peircingly delivered bird calls,Neil Young "Everybody Knows This is
Nowhere/Emperor of Wyoming" (B side was non lp instro), Coupla Westbound
Funkadelic and Detroit Emeralds singles, a Stax Mel and Tim single that I
haven't listened to yet cause i need to clean it, and the kind of garage pop
record I exect to find- my third easybeats "friday on my mind/made my
bed..." in perfect cond.
   Later,
     Joe

These are all right, so are the Crate reissue style amps, but I prefer to
stick with Danelectro for this kind of thing. All their guitars rule and
they make amps just as good that go from 10 bucks fo' the little clip on
size on up to, well I can't remember but cheaper than the peavey for a Nifty
Fifty. Plus if your wallet's all that's botherin' you just check out flea
markets and big warehouse instro outlets that usually have good stuff like
50s and 60s Silvertones in twin 12s and 10s tube for 75-250$. Tubes are
pretty easy to find these days at industrial outlet stores or any reputable
music shop for the inevitable repairs that come with a cheap vintage piece
of equipment.

The Makers glam record got a lot of backlash here in
Philly, where at the time, there were already too many
vacant pretty boys. But glam done right isn't pretty
or vacant at all. I've been reading about the glam
years in "We Got the Neutron Bomb", the L.A. version
of "Please Kill Me. "

Red Planet were pretty good poppy punk (emphasis on the pop) from S.F. A
bit like a sillier, more "fun" Real Kids or Ramones. All three guys jumping
around doing splits, I thought they tried a little too hard but it was
Monday night and they wanted to whip up some excitement. The guitar player
was a real wankmeister and showman. He pulled some of those Eddie Van
Halenisms like playing the notes using just his left hand on the fretboard,
etc. (But I could've done without the cover of "Panama"!) Someone said they
were good at the Vegas Shutdown (or was it the Grind?).

They joined Syl and the band on stage for the encore (which I've forgotten
now, maybe "Pills"?)
