I purchased the Radio Active reissue of the ultra rare album by the
Summer Sounds. Does anyone have any information on who this band was.
I have spent several weeks checking my sources and it's the same
thing.....five guys from Dartmouth Mass. Nothing much than there first
name and they released the LP on the equally obscure Laurel label.

Subject: [bomp] New Gulcher CD: Joshua Jugband 5 / DAMASCUS DOLDRUM (Gulcher 608)

Joshua Jugband 5
DAMASCUS DOLDRUM
(Gulcher 608)

Joshua Jugband 5 was the name used by Swedish musician Jakob Olausson for two
limited-edition CDRs a few years back. In 2002, the self-titled JJ5 debut
was released by my label Slippy Town. Recorded at home on 4-track, Jakob used
guitar and percussion to make 30 minutes of pure grade-"L" instrumental
psych-out, low-key wall-rumblin' groove, and heavy livin'-room glow. The disc
contained four untitled jam-gems.

The JJ5 follow-up, DAMASCUS DOLDRUM, was released by Ramadan in 2003. This
one has three more untitled tracks clocking in at just over 30 minutes.
Again,
it's filled with great psych guitar distortion, dirty drone 'n bellow,
caveman drums, and unknown tongues. The third track is a doozy within the
midst of
the dooz: hovering low-end joy slowly waking like a very murkadelic
Jeffersilver Airship jam. Cymbal tap-tappin', and dig that rubber-band guitar
sustain. Open, the window, ma...I want my head shoveled. Sure feels good.

If you dig the Godz, the Screamin' Mee-Mees, Silver Apples, the Twinkeyz,
Mike Rep & The Quotas, Hawkwind, Amon Duul I (etc)...here's some MORE, but
without all the words to get in the way of your wander. And now, thanks to
the good
folk at Gulcher, you can get these two long-gone goodies on a silver disc
that'll last longer than them dainty little CDRs.

Since the release of the two Joshua Jugband 5 CDRs, Jakob has moved into a
more outsider-folk bag, releasing a solo LP under his own name and another
with
his girlfriend as Sus & Jakob. (Eddie Flowers, Slippy Town)

Hey,how did I miss these guys for so long? Actually I DO go way back to Chris' legendary garage goddesses,The Brood. Chris Horne is fookin' amazing. She's got a KILLER bod and killer style to show it all off-black mini, a black and white psyche tunic, white fishnets stocking, black leather knee high boots, rectangular,Roger McQuinn style shades. Chris was cool, justdancin' madly to the Crybabies in the corner by herself. I hadda get her out on the dance floor with me and she's like a one woman Berlitz of 60's dances-the frug, the jerk, the pony, the monkey, the bat-usi,you name it! HORNE is my heroine!! Back tracking a bit, The Come Arounds brought all their buddies from the fruit stripe rugby team(ok,I'm alluding to the striped shirts and the repeated high fives!)People were saying they sounded like the Monkees, but they were more like The Seekers. People seemed to dig their innocence. I enjoyed their cover of the Grass Roots' "Wait A Million Years",but in general I'd like to see them develop a degree of melancholy to temper their unabashed "up with people" vibe. I think if they did a cover of We Five's "You Were On My Mind" or a song with that sort of feel,it'd give them more depth, interest, mystique. As for The Crybabies, sadly last night was their next to the last gig. They played a powerful, passionate set of rock 'n' roll from the opening of "Other Half"(check their myspace)to "Last Plane Home" to Dylan's "If You Gotta Go Go Now,Else You Gotta Stay All Night".( I would have loved to have danced through their whole set,but I just had oral surgery Friday. )I was flattered that Miss Horne asked me to introduce the band. Lady Kensington and The Beat Lords are a stripped down, soupped up garage rock force of nature. Chris looks perfectly, moves perfectly, plays perfectly...she personifies cool 60's psyche/punk. People danced intermittenly, but mostly people sat transfixed-honestly none of us had seen a human being as cool as Chris. NEON NITE must have Lady Kensington and The Beatlords back as soon as poss!

 Hello Parrots -

The Baskervilles have a gig this Friday at Magnetic Field in Brooklyn with
the legendary Mitch Easter. We will be on around 9:15 in the middle
slot. Shalini will be opening. Magnetic Field is located at 97 Atlantic
Avenue.
http://www.magneticbrooklyn.com

Mitch Easter famously produced the earliest releases of R.E.M., including
their legendary album Murmur. Along with production, he fronted the classic
80s
indiepop combo Let's Active and has produced dozens of albums. He is also a
member of Shalini's group.

For some reason this upset me more than the loss of James Brown. Seriously.

  Oh well,...R.I.P. Lily.
