this.

Joe Scarborough likes to think he's some rock'n'roll news anchor, yet he
had
nothing on it during his show this morning. Not even bumper music. Also
no
mention on CNN's morning show, but the website could've had something.

I really dug this band. While going through my albums recently and
burning them to CD, I had "Gyrate." Great, great stuff!!! I had not
listened to it in years but remembered every song on it.

I'm not sure about the "Party Hardy" statement. The Stones were very
much known for that, maybe as much as their music. Zeppelin also had
stories about them, everyone knows the eel story. Just as the Punks and
Pogo dancing morphed into the free for all pit, partying evolved into a
full time aspect of some of the metal bands. People would read the
stories and assume that is what it was all about.

A lot of the early rock and roll (and blues) was very closely related to
gospel and that can be a very conservative base. I don't know if that
really has anything to do with your point though, maybe that the
liberating/liberal aspect became more pronounced during the Hippy
movement.

I would have to agree that I wouldn't like to see the Bomp list
degenerate into strictly political conversations, because then the fun
starts to go out of it. It's hard for me to separate talking about '60s
music from what the meaning of much of it was, and I often link the two.
Here's something I wrote to a friend, off the cuff, yesterday that kind
of explains partially how I feel about some of this. - dom

Here is the problem: The Metal Assholes have ruined rock's reputation
forever, it seems. Before them, Rock 'n' Roll was a liberating, liberal
experience.

They made it into party hardy Behind-the-Music coke fodder, instead of
the rise of social consciousness that Beatles/Dylan people forced to the
surface during the '60s. Today, the sound bite on Rock means "idiot,"
thanks to what MTV/VH1 chose to focus on. I know this after spending
six weeks in New York last summer trying to promote a book about how
social change got into Pop music during the '60s, and facing Guns 'n'
Roses on the cover of Rolling Stone... whilst I got nowhere with people
there.

There was never room for right wingers in rock 'n' roll circa
1955-1966... well, actually, even through to the mid-'70s, despite the
music sucking more and more after a while during the '70s. Because to
be right wing during the first rock 'n' roll era was against everything
the music stood for. I discussed this on
camera at NBC with Little Richard.

Rock's rep has totally been diminished, until all that white trash
bullshit is long forgotten and the Ted Nugents of the world are cast
aside the way Fats
Domino is today.

Dom
